She sends five magic rings to five special young people.

Wheeler, with the power of fire.

[tires screeching]

[paper rustling]

From Eastern Europe, Linka, with the power of wind.

From Asia, Gi, with the power of water.

[water gushing]

And from South America, Ma-Ti, with the power of heart.

When the five powers combine

they summon Earth's greatest champion..

Captain Planet!

(Planeteers) Go, Planet!

(Captain Planet) The power is yours!

[instrumental music]

[birds cawing]

Oh, no!

[dramatic music]

(Martin) ‘Yet another mutated creature pulled from the ocean today.’

With me is Tak Yakamura.

Tell me, Tak, where did you catch this thing?

In the ocean, near my home.

It was the only thing | caught all morning.

The mystery continues, and the world wonders

‘how this could happen.’

[hissing]

[instrumental music]

(Gi) ‘No, Suchi! Put that down!’

[grunts] With these turbines

we'll be able to get where we're going

twice as fast, with no pollution.

Suchi, come on! Don't touch those!

[Gi sighs]

[Suchi sighs]

(Gi) ‘Gaia, what's wrong?’

Come to the crystal chamber, Gi.

‘We have an eco-emergency.'

(Gi) ‘Be right there, Gaia.’

‘Just have to tighten one more bolt.’

[Suchi screeching]

Oh, Suchi, | don't have time for this!

[Suchi screeching]

[suspenseful music]

[Planeteers murmuring]

Hey! | think I've seen this movie before, Gaia.

Unfortunately, Wheeler, it's not a movie.

It's an international newscast.

‘That poor thing is the product of pollution.’

Whoa! That's real?

I'd hate to go to a seafood restaurant

‘and find that on my plate.’

(Martin on TV) ‘Scientists continue to report rapidly increasing levels’

of cadmium, mercury, and PCBs in coastal waters.

‘Although the incidence of mutations’

‘is increasing by the hour'

investigators are still unable

to trace the source of pollution.

If it isn't found soon'

‘this region of the world may well be...doomed.'

Mercury and cadmium are heavy metals.

They are very poisonous.

And PCBs. They all amplify biologically.

What do you mean?

Biological amplification is a process, Kwame. Look!

‘PCBs and other pollutants’

‘contaminate lower forms of sea life, like shrimp.’

When fish eat the shrimp

‘the PCBs concentrate inside their bodies. '

And as the PCBs move up the food chain

‘they become more and more concentrated’

‘sometimes reaching lethal doses.'

‘At the rate we're dumping toxins into the ocean'

pretty soon eating fish could be a thing of the past.

So, the problem starts small and then multiplies?

Exactly. People think that because the ocean is so big

they can dump anything in it and it won't matter.

It is up to us to find out who is behind this operation

before the problem gets completely out of control.

(Martin on TV) ‘What is happening in the seas to cause these deformities?’

like find a cure for the common cold?

Not to mention whatever is in those barrels.

This is where the heavy metals and PCBS concentrate.

It's so sad.

Shellfish are at the greatest risk

because they have to live right in this gunk.

| hope we do not run in to anything this size.

We must find out who is doing this.

Back to the Eco-sub.

Calm down, Suchi!

[whirring]

We must warn the Planeteers.

[motor revving]

| was fishing right around here.

Well, let's give it a try.

[suspenseful music]

It's so peaceful.

It's hard to believe that there are so many problems

just below the surface.

The net's caught on something. Give me a hand.

[both grunting]

(Kwame) ‘lam picking up something on sonar.’

(Linka) ‘I've got video.’

Planeteers, Suchi just brought me this.

He says it's part of the eco-sub.

That is a very strange rock formation.

It is a giant clam.

Well, it's time to deliver

a little poison pen note of my own.

These creatures are too deformed to live for very long.

‘I'll just put them way out in the ocean’

where they can't harm anyone.

Here's a scoop for that reporter.

And now to find a solution for this pollution.

Well, it looks like Sludge has really gone overboard this time.

Hey, Sludge, need a lift?

Save me, Captain Planet.

I'm sorry. I've been...transformed.

The only transformation you've made

is turning this ecosystem into a toxic wasteland.

Lucky for you, I'm feeling generous.

Lucky for me, | took Mom's advice and wore clean underwear.

(Martin) Well, the story is being broadcast around the world.

(Kwame) That is great!

Only a few minor injuries in the whole city.

But it's gonna take time to put the docks back in shape.

That monster sure did some damage.

That is nothing compared to the damage

that was done to the ocean.

Toxic waste is a monster of a problem

but dumping in the ocean is not a solution.

(Captain Planet) ‘You're right, Planeteers’

but it would have been even worse without your help.

[instrumental music]

[Suchi chattering]

Welcome home, Planeteers.

I'm sorry | was so nasty to you, Suchi.

| wonder what happened to Sludge and Ooze.

Let's just say they're cleaning up their act.

(Sludge) ‘If those rotten Planeteers hadn't shown up'

people think we cannot hurt them.
