Gala, the spirit of the Earth, can no longer stand

the terrible destruction plaguing our planet.

She sends five magic rings to five special young people.

Kwame from Africa, with the power of Earth.

From North America, Wheeler, with the power of fire.

[theme music]

From the Soviet Union, Linka, with the power of wind.

From Asia, Gi, with the power of water.

And from South America, Ma-Ti, with the power of heart.

When the five powers combine

they summon Earth's greatest champion, Captain Planet!

(all) ‘Go, Planet!’

(Captain Planet) The power is yours!

[instrumental music]

[birds chirping]

[chain saw revs]

[thud]

Chop them all down.

Step one in our evil plan, firewood.

(Dr. Blight) ‘Step 2, coal, to create lots of dirty smoke. '

(MAL) ‘Step 3, oil and gasoline.’

Fuel for my smog-spewing barge.

‘Part car, part power plant, part factory.’

‘It'll burn oil, gas, wood, or coal.'

(MAL) ‘Congratulations, Dr. Blight.’

You've raised air pollution to an art.

Burning these fossil fuels will increase the carbon dioxide gas

in the Earth's atmosphere

‘and keep in more of the sun's heat.’

We'll have such fun making life on Earth too hot to handle.

Right you are, sweetie.

But first, we must test my scheme

on the island the Planeteers call home.

Oh, goody.

‘All my massive computations to locate Gaia’

and her island have paid off.

(Dr. Blight) ‘We'll make those planet punks suffer.’

‘Then I'll deliver the final blow.’

Come on, Dr. Blight. You can tell your own computer.

What is this secret surprise we're towing?

If | told you, then it wouldn't be a surprise

[alarm blaring]

What is this barge doing so close to Hope Island?

It's one of those miserable Planeteers.

[laughs]

Prepare the force field dome.

[electricity crackling]

Won't the Planeteers notice the force field?

Who cares? It's already too late for them to stop it.

Kwame, your greenhouse grows beautiful flowers.

It is like my home in the rain forest.

Yes, Ma-Ti, even on cool days like this

the glass windows keep the sun's warmth inside.

So they made a little greenhouse. So what?

I've made a really big greenhouse out of Hope Island.

Then let's put the heat on and start cooking.

[instrumental music]

‘This ought to smoke 'em out.'

[bubbling]

(MAL) ‘Burning that wood has driven the carbon dioxide level’

‘over Hope Island way up.’

It's already 20 degrees hotter.

And this is just the beginning.

- 'Dr. Blight.’ - Huh!

| should have known your twisted mind was behind this.

Eat smoke, Planeteer.

[fan whirs]

Dr. Blight has created a force field over Hope Island

and is pumping pollution into it.

If we don't stop her..

Dr. Blight has taken a prisoner on that barge.

Hurry. Time is short.

[chitters]

No, Suchi, we cannot summon

Captain Planet without Linka.

We must handle this ourselves.

We can sneak around from behind.

Hurry. Dr. Blight's heat wave is killing our sea friends.

Wait a minute.

| see something out there kind of shimmering.

It looks like the force field.

‘Gi, see if you can break through it.'

Then we will dive under it.

[music continues]

Oh, no. Look. The force field extends underwater.

We are going to hit it.

[electricity crackles]

Ma-Ti, ask Gaia what we do now.

‘Gaia, what is happening? What is wrong?’

I'm not well, Ma-Ti.

How can the spirit of Earth be sick?

My health is linked to the Earth and to this special place.

If Hope Island dies, |, too, will die.

Do not worry, Gaia. We will save you both.

How are we gonna do that?

| don't know. Is the eco-sub still working?

As long as we do not run into any more force fields.

But we must get through.

Gaia cannot survive much longer.

Ha, those silly Planeteers

will never get past our force field.

[grunts]

Or Dr. Blight's greenhouse effect

will ruin Hope Island forever.

Alright, MAL, it's time to get

to the really cool part of my plan.

Oh, goody. At last, I'll find out what that thing is.

‘I'm about to crash for curiosity.’

Watch closely, because soon, Hope Island will be history.

Open force field.

[beeping]

Hey, Dr. Blight is up to something, something big

and it's moving toward Hope Island.

But it cannot get through unless..

[gasps] The force field.

(Ma-Ti) ‘Dr. Blight is moving something in.’

‘We can slip under it while the force field is down.’

Down periscope.

(Gi) ‘This will be a tight squeeze.’

We made it.

- ‘Alright!’ - 'Good job!’

And we're outside the force field.

Kwame, bring us up to periscope depth.

‘We do not want Dr. Blight to see us coming.’

[electricity crackling]

[whirring]

[Linka groaning]

Gi and | will swim out the escape hatch and help Linka.

[coughs]

The smoke from this barge is awful.

We will never be able to use our rings.

But we can use our heads. Come on.

(Kwame) ‘Psst. Linka. Quick.'

[dramatic music]

We must stop Dr. Blight before she burns any more fuel.

You chiphead!

She got away, and her goody-goody pals are with her.

[static]

But | was busy turning on the oil furnace, like you told me.

| can't be everywhere.

Spare me the excuses.

I'll handle this.

| think we have struck oil.

Now to shut down the flow.

Poor baby, would it feel any better

Whatever it is, it gives me a chill.

(Gi) ‘An iceberg. But how?’

She must have towed it here from the Arctic.

And that is not just any iceberg, that is--

(Linka) ‘A rapidly melting iceberg.’

(Dr. Blight) ‘A touch of irony, my dears.’

To cool off my greenhouse effect

I'm melting some polar ice.

[laughs]

Look. Inside the force field, the sea level is rising.

(Gi) ‘We've got to shut down those furnaces’

‘to slow down the iceberg's melting.’

Come on. The controls must be up on the bridge.

[dramatic music]

| wonder which switch is the right one.

The only way we can find out is to try them all.

[gasps] None of them work.

[gasps] Then it must be this.

We did it!

It is time to abandon ship.

[instrumental music]

Good work. You have stopped any more heat buildup.

(Dr. Blight) ‘So what?’

My force field generator is still working

‘and there's enough heat trapped inside to melt’

‘that iceberg and flood Hope Island.’

She's right.

And we cannot get back through the force field to help Gaia.

Maybe we can.

‘That exhaust pipe passes through the field.’

We can break it loose from the barge and go through it.

| will ram it with the eco-sub. Everybody below.

[groans]

[screaming]

Yeah. We're in a whale of trouble.

Wheeler, that is it.

We'll be fighting the water pressure, so full speed ahead.

We must get to Gaia quickly.

(MAL) ‘Gaia won't last long now.’

You must save Hope Island.

We must get Gaia to high ground.

Dr. Blight, aren't we going to stick around

to watch Hope Island go under?

No need, my micro-chipper friend.

[laughs evilly]

Just think of the disasters when | melt the polar ice caps.

Today, Hope Island. Tomorrow, the world.

The water just keeps rising. What can we do?

We cannot summon Captain Planet through the force field.

Aim your rings into the water.

It will carry your message.

[bird chirps]

Captain Planet, we were afraid

you couldn't handle all this air pollution.

[grunts] Better keep cool if I'm gonna focus these solar rays.

[static] Someone must have broken your force field.

Impossible.

‘What?!

Are you sure you still want to melt the polar ice caps?

Quick, MAL. Tell me everything | need to know about surfing.

(MAL) ‘Just two words, doctor, wipe out!’

[instrumental music]

[bird chirping]

[monkey chittering]

Mm. It's so nice to feel cool again.

But what about all that carbon dioxide pollution

Dr. Blight released into the air?

| can't undo all that

and around the world, more is added every day.

That's why it's so important to burn less of those fuels

‘that pollute the atmosphere and make Earth hotter.’

Can people stop this?

The less gas, wood, oil, and coal we burn..

The less greenhouse gases we put into the air.

And get your neighborhood to plant trees

or plant one yourself.

Trees absorb carbon dioxide, the worst greenhouse gas.

Be cool. And keep our planet from getting too hot.
