According to 'Purans'
in the Treta Yuga, the ancestor of Lord Rama
Raja Harischandra had to lose everything in pursuit of truth
and became a slave to dom (caretaker of) the cremation ground in Kashi
After a few days, even his only son, Rohit, passed away
and Rohit's body came to Harish Chandra's cremation ground for the last rites
Following the protocols set by his master, dom,
Harish Chandra asked his wife to pay taxes in order to perform the last rites
This story conceals immense compassion and sorrow
However, it was later revealed
that the dom was none other than
Dharmaraja (Lord Yama) himself
Harish Chandra, the upholder of truth, passed his test
and the deities took him and his entire family to heaven
Upon Raja Harish Chandra's request
his subjects also experienced the joy of heaven
There is something about this story
that, even after thousands of years, we haven't forgotten it yet
(Corpses Burning)
- Father - yes
the food is ready...
you go ahead
- we'll take care of this and join - Alright
(Giggles)
But this is a story from the Treta Yuga...
Our story, or we can say
the beginning of a major turning point in our story,
starts with Mohammad Ali Jinnah's declaration of 'Direct Action Day'
"We do not want war
But If you want war
we accept your offer unhesitatingly.
Either we will have a divided India or a destroyed India."
Kena... Hey Kenaa...
I'm here her highness
Inform Ramsingh to shut all the doors & windows
Sure her highness
Raise the security!
Yes her highness
is Basab Dutta asleep?
Yes her highness
(riot chants)
Esteemed Raja Radha Ballabh Mukhopadhyay
Please accept my greetings.
I hope by God's grace
you and everyone in Lotaiganj are doing well
You must be aware of mounting tension
throughout the country, especially in Bengal
Your beloved Basabdutta is here with me
But as you know, daughters grow up without us even realizing it
Aunt, help... She's tickling me
Basab, stop it, go sit there!
Her highness, I'll take your leave
You've grown up so much
yet you behave like a kid!
Grandmaa...
Sometimes you say I've grown up
Sometimes I'm a kid
why don't you make up your mind first?
When I worry about your future
Then I think of you as a grown up
But when I feel affectionate, I think of you as my little angel!
(Giggles)
But I feel that my grandma is a little girl!
Wait and watch as your childishness is about to get over
Just a matter of few days
What?
Do not ask the saint about his caste...
Ask about wisdom instead.
Value the sword's worth,
Let the sheath aside, O Kabir...
Let the sheath aside...
if Guru and Govind(God) both stand before me
whom should I bow to?
if Guru and Govind(God) both stand before me
whom should I bow to?
Be grateful to Guru
who introduced me to Govind(God)...
O Kabir, who introduced me to Govind(God)...
Alright, See you tomorrow!
Yes teacher!
Hey... Hey...
What are you doing?
You belong to such a superior Bramhin dynasty
that too of a prominent landlords,
Why do you want me to commit sins?
Didn't you just preached me
"Don't ask the saint, his caste"
And ayways, Guru comes first among Guru & Govind
as they introduce us to god!
See...
you've just returned from London
You'll take sometime to adopt the culture of this country
So that means
you yourself don't believe in whatever you preach
Look Mohan!
your are still young
You are yet to come across the bitter facets of life
There are many things in life
that are difficult to understand simply by reading or hearing someone
You'll have to expereince them yourself
(Chirping birda) This land...
These forests...
These farms...
Every iota of it belonged to us!
We owned everything here
and then these invaders
these foreigners
came here and snatched away everything
Not only did they steal our forests, our land, our farms
they also stole away our lives friends!
They pushed us down by calling us "Shudra" (lower caste)...
We won't take their intimidation anymore,
We have leaders like Jogendra Nath Mandal standing with us.
Our community is awakening.
(Applause)
Brothers!
Jogendra da believes that
we untouchables have no future alongside there elite caste.
Our future lies in living with our Muslim brothers
- (Applause) Exactly, - Totally agree
That's why, my brothers
let us not go along with Nehru
Gandhi
Patel, or Mukherjee.
Instead, let us stand with Mohammad Ali Jinnah
and create Pakistan.
(Applause)
My brothers...
Pakistan...
is the dream nation of Untouchables and Muslims
where we all will live together with brotherhood and harmony.
But brothers...
what am I hearing?
Ever since Md. Ali Jinnah has demanded Pakistan,
Since then, our Dalit and Muslim brothers have been fighting against each other
My friends...
we Untouchable and Muslim should not fight against each other
We have to unite and fight against the foreign oppressors together.
Wait a minute...
Wait a minute...
Abdul Brother, what's wrong?
Khagen!
you were saying
that we should fight against the foreign oppressors?
- Yes... - You mean against the British.
Oh Abdul, I'm talking about the foreigners to came piror to them
Who? Mughal or Turkish?
Neither Mughals nor Turks, I'm talking about those Aryans
And how would you recognise them?
Abdul, the people who have fair skin are Aryans,
and the people with darker complexions are natives... Right brothers?
Sometimes the same family has two brothers, one fair-skinned and the other dark-skinned...
So, the dark is considered the native
while the fair one is foreigner?
Abdul, Just shut up!
All these years, we all got mixed up
So now you want to segregate the mixed up?
What rubbish you're talking, Somebody please throw him out!
One last question...
How do we identify Hindu-Muslim (just) by the faces?
Abdul, those who have a beard are Muslims
and those with sacred tuft tied are Hindus.
And if someone doesn't have a beard or has no sacred tuft...
have you heard about circumcision?
circumcision...
Are you suggesting that people should walk in a riot
with a sword in one hand and loin cloth in the other?
And make use of sword and loin cloth as per their convenience?
- What rubbish? Please throw him away - Are you out of your mind?
Go Abdul, get out of here!
Abdul Da!
was there a need to create a ruckus that day?
Jogendra Nath & M.A Jinnah are working for our well-being.
We should be united
One thing to tell you...
Has your younger aunt gotten married?
Not yet Abdul da
We are still searching a suitable guy
Everyone at home is already worried
Do one thing.
Get her married to me.
Are you out of your mind Abdul da?
Five generations ago
we belonged to your caste...
We changed our religion
but our condition did not change.
Just as in your community
there are Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras...
Similarly we have
Ashraf
Ajlaf
& Arzal...
We have fallen even lower.
Exactly...
That's exactly why
we need Pakistan Abdul da!
I am going to Kolkata today.
I met a school teacher of our caste there.
who has studied in London
and is now ready to teach our children.
And who will bear the school expenses?
School expenses... I have talked to her highness, Abdul.
But I've heard
even she belongs to upper caste!
(Sarscastic giggle)
Mohan has returned from London after completing his studies
Since his return, he hasn't been keeping well
and doctors have advised him to change the environment.
I am arranging to send him to your place around Durga Puja.
Along with this letter, I am also sending a photograph of him.
If possible, send a photograph of my future daughter-in-law.
It has been long since I last saw her.
Letter has arrived...!!!
(Giggle)
- Letter has arrived... - Potol!!! Wait, whose letter is it?
Hey wait, Whose is it?
(Giggles)
- Potol, Wait give me the letter... - No way, Ain't giving to anyone
Potol, wait...
Enough of your madness
- Give me the letter! - I'll won't give
GIVE!
I won't give!
GIVE
Here
Go on... Read...
You read...
Neither I can read nor you
Yet you kept running behind me... Letter...Letter...Crazy
Whose letter would this be?
This letter has been sent by Khagen Madal from Kolkata
And it says
that on the 14th of Bhadra (Hindu calender month),
Madan Chandra Mullick, who has studied in London
will leave Kolkata and reach Hakimpur.
You should reach the river bank to welcome him.
And it also says that Madan Babu doesn't have a family.
So, you should be so hospitable to him
that he finds his home in Hakimpur.
(Sound of flowing river & Chirping birds)
Uncle, There's a boat coming
Careful, Are you from London?
Yes, Why?
- We found him! - We found him... Play the drums!
(Drumbeats & Cheering)
This teacher is our last hope,
otherwise, our children will continue to burn corpses like us...
they will keep skinning animals... cleaning up others' dirt...
only he can help us escape from this inhumane life...
yours, Khagen Mandal.
Until our children receive proper education...
please don't go anywhere from here.
We don't have much to offer you
but here are some jewellery and coins as a token of gratitude.
Please don't worry
I won't go anywhere.
I'll stay right here.
Let me know if you need hot water to bathe...
Not too hot, but some lukewarm water would be better.
Sure...
Listen Shabri...
See if Ghoshal Babu's funeral corpse is burning.
Place a pot of water in it.
Oh no no...
Master Ji may belong to our caste, but he lived has with the Englishmen, right?
Shabri, prepare hot water for them on a separate stove.
Yes father.
Seasons change...new faces emerge The youth of nature returns once again.
Who are you?
the new ray of the spring sun
or a sweet dream
that will fade away with the setting sun
somewhere in the distant horizon.
Mamuni Di...
Give me back my paper.
Let me see if my beloved sister has turned into a rock
in eager to meet Kandarp Ketu (Prince charming)!
So, what do you think about would be brother in law?
What do I think?
I have been searching for him...
I wonder how he looks now.
I saw him five years ago.
You haven't changed a bit in past 5 years
I'm sure he hasn't too!
Five years ago, I used to look like this
In these five years, he probably looks the same.
Oh no!
By the way, I heard that ten days ago he received a letter
with his photo...
- Did you see it? - Not just once...
I have seen it ten times... I wish he had fallen on me.
- Wait, do you have his photo? - Yes... do you want to see it?
(Giggle)
Here you go

Sir, how many days do we have to study all this?
Oh!
It's just the first day.
and you're already bored...?
Aren't you enjoying studying?
No, no, we are having a lot of fun.
Are you sure?
Yes...
okay...
Now repeat after me
- A - A
- AA - AA
What are you saying Sir?
Women's education is against our religion.
Even the religious scriptures say...
that Shudras and women have no right to read the Vedas.
Every book scribbled in the past is not a religious scripture...
In every era, people write books according to their own thoughts and experiences.
Now, if those books are not relevant to the present time,
we have to leave them aside.
Look, the Vedas are our most sacred scriptures...
Many great scholars believe...
that our Vedas contain compositions of more than 49 female sages
Perhaps in the whole world, there is only one religious text
that has such a significant contribution from women
Maitri
Gargi
Juhu
Suryasavitri
weren't they all scholars in the shastras?
When the great Guru Shankaracharya went for a debate with Mandan Mishra
who judged them of what's right and wrong...
Tell me.
hahaha, Our saints?
No, No...
It was Mandan Mishra's wife, Ubhaya Bharati,
who was a woman...
Now, could she have done that without the knowing of the shastras?
Masterji!
- Did you study in London or in Kashi? - Hahaha
(Giggles)
Well, I studied all of this a long time ago.
but back then, all these stories seemed like mere tales to me...
When I went abroad
Then I understood the importance of these stories.
But tell me, should your daughters study or not?
They should get educated Masterji!
- A - A,
- AA - AA,
- EE - EE
- OO - OO
Masterji, Masterji
- Yes? - Actually Shabari wanted to pee. (Giggles)
pee?
Yes, it's a natural thing
Oh, Alright.
Infact everyone go, (Students cheering)
(Students cheering) But come back soon
Why don't you go?
I dont wanna go.
There's no need to shy away, everyone has to pee.
its natural. Then you go,
Then you go.
Why should I go?
Then even I won't.
Do you want to pee with me?
Am I your friend who'll hold your hand and take you to pee.
Go...
But I don't feel like peeing...
I wanted to talk to you in private...
What do you want to talk in private?
You are very kind.
Because of you, Jhimli and I are able to study.
You look just like Lord Ram...
Calm like a breeze, but firm in your own tune.
I really like the way you talk...
I wish I could listen to you all day long.
Well, women are usually fond of talking and listening to conversations.
Not everyone, only the ones they like
Sit down.
- What happened...? - Nothing...
Why didn't you come?

Hey Khoka, what are you kids doing?
We are going to school...
We will also learn to read and write
and when we grow up, we'll go to Kolkata and become the British Officer's peons
Hey, those British are leaving our country,
so how will you be their peon?
Who will you serve?
Whoever becomes the new boss
Ohkay...

Uncle, even I want to become a peon... Even I want to go to school.
Hey Fokru, educated people are idiots.
They go to the city and work for others...
while we are the kings of our own wishes.
Am I right?
The way things are developing...
it seems like the whole of Bengal will become part of Pakistan...
But Mukherjee is causing trouble...
Even Nehru and Gandhi are against it...
Assalam Walekum
Walekum Assalam
Sayyed sahib!
I want my nephew to study in madrasa.
Abdul!
Are you out of your mind!
I taught you and your nephew about namaaz...
I even made you memorize some verses from the Quran...
Yes...
That's enough for you...
Understand?
Otherwise, your nephew...
will go to the madrasa and...
start mingling with people of high caste, playing with children
and when he grows up, he will say he's equal to us...
But in the eyes of God, everyone is equal, right?
Where is everyone equal?
Just like Muslims and infedels are not equal...
there is a difference between class of Sayyeds and Ansaris...
But is it written somewhere?
When an elite race scholar like me speaks...
there should be no questions asked...
Doubting Allah's words is like knocking on the gates of hell...
- Learn to have faith in Allah. - I have faith in Allah
but not in the Mullas...
The things you say in Allah's name... sometimes the smell like evil
You talk more than you should!

Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan & the leader of Shiromani Akali Dal
Master Tara Singh, once again reject the demand for Pakistan, and said...
- granny, can I ask you something? - Yes,
When he comes, how should I address him?
- Who is coming? - The one from Lotaiganj
Ah alright, Mohan?
What did you call him earlier?
Earlier, I didn't know that we were going to get married
so I used to call him Dada.
Even then, I used to scold you not to call him Dada.
But you always say to call older girls Didi and older boys Dada...
Hmm...
- so what should we do now? - Will God punish me for this?
Let's do one thing, the Kali Puja is coming, right?
At that time, Bow down of Goddess Kali
hold your ears and do 11 squats while saying...
"Kali Maa, forgive me, Mohan is not my Dada."
Granny, are you making fun of me?
Ha ha ha... Oh, my crazy granddaughter...
those with a pure heart are never punished by God.
And my granddaughter is an incarnation of the goddess herself...
No sin can touch her.
(Giggles)
Were you stalking me?
No, I came to collect firewood in the forest.
But you don't have any wood in your hands.
I couldn't find the wood of my choice.
Even for the firewood, you have preferences and choices?
Yes...
I am the daughter of a Dom (a caste associated with funeral rituals).
I need the wood that burns till the end.
You have just started learning, but you have always had a knack with words.
Those who need to put their thoughts on paper require words.
But thoughts are like a free horse, they can run anywhere.
A free horse never reaches its destination.
It needs direction...
The right direction.
Aren't you there for it?
People say that love doesn't have reason.
Anyone can love anyone.
And Shabri was at that age
when a girl's heart desires someone to claim it.
♫ (I wonder) when will we be one ♫
♫ I'm shining (like gold) in the heat of distance/ Separation ♫

Fakru, that's Shabri...
But who is this new man with her?
Uncle, that's the new teacher, Master Mahashye.
Fakru, talk to him...
Uncle, you brought me here. You talk to him.
He seems highly educated...
what if he scolds you?
I have been observing you for a while...
Why are you following me?
This is the village path, everyone comes and goes from here.
Sometimes the one ahead goes behind.
and sometimes the one behind catches up while the one ahead walks.
What do you want from me?
Master...
I want my nephew to become like you.
Alright...
From tomorrow, send him to the school. Hmm...
Do you know his name?
- I'm sure it's a good name... - Hahaha
His name is Fokruddin.
we, I mean I'm alone.
We call him Fokru...
Nice name... Send him to the school from tomorrow. Hmm.
- Our little river - Our little river
- flows in graceful loops - flows in graceful loops
- The summer heat dries her - The summer heat dries her
- to a gentler flow - to a gentler flow.
Very good, we'll recite again, OK?
Shabri... Jhimili... Potol... Come on, lets go
What's wrong?
Please stop it sir, we don't want our children to study here!
But why?
Just because we don't want to...
Come on...
Get up...
Master Sahab, we hold a respectable position in our community.
So, how can we allow our children to study along with a Muslim?
Mohan Babu!
Some time ago...
in Kolkata.
I worked for an English officer.
Though he was a big man.
an Englishman, but he was a shabby.
So, whenever I picked up his used glass
I would silently say "Ram Ram" to myself.
He believed that we Indians were beneath him, and I was the lowest of them all...
But even this man who considered himself the lowest
I was beneath him.
When he learned this, he was shocked...
(Giggle)
I understand.
It's good that I am considered good,
but it's bad that I am considered the best.
Now look at these English people.
They think that...
It is their duty to civilize the thousands of years old culture and civilization
and here the Maulana Sahab of Fokru says that Hindus are infidels...
Their prayers won't be accepted if they drink water served by infidels.
How can such a world function?
I think you don't need me anymore.
Respected teacher...
If you do as you please, no child from this village will come to your school.
I will go.
You shut up!
Master Sahab, do you notice the change in their tone?
If your mothers had received education,
even your thoughts and tone would have been different.
Tomorrow morning, I am going to start my classes on time...
Whoever likes it can come, whoever doesn't like it can stay away...
And if there is no child, I will teach the trees here...
After all, since ancient times, Hindus have believed that trees are living beings...
Who knows, through the trees, some good things can be imbibed in nature...
Our little river, flows in graceful loops
The summer heat dries her to a gentler flow.
- Our little river, - Flows in graceful loops
- The summer heat, - The summer heat
- dries her to a gentler flow... - dries her to a gentler flow...
- Our little river, - Our little river
- flows in graceful loops - flows in graceful loops
- The summer heat - The summer heat
(Riot Chants)
On one side, the chaos that started with Direct Action Day
had spread from Bengal to Bihar and Punjab.
On the other side were people like Mohan who were dedicated to uniting hearts.
Perhaps it was Mohan's influence that Shabri had
learned to read and write in a few months.
What are you doing here?
Mother asked me to clean your room.
What are you reading?
A book...
I can see you're reading a book, but what book are you reading?
You can see what I'm reading. You're more educated than me, aren't you?
Do you enjoy taunting me when you talk?
I read in one of your books
that pain and humor coexist in satire.
Devdas... Look, these books are not meant for you right now.
What was Paro's age in Devdas?
Almost the same as yours...
So, if Paro could do it, can't I even read?
Okay, tell me, how many stories by Sharadchandra Chattopadhyay have you read?
Shikant and Charitraheen...
Shikant and Charitraheen...
and what did you learn from them?
men are kind of silly
They can't understand a woman's feelings.
No matter how eloquent a woman may be
she always expects the man to be the first one to express his feelings in love.
It is also possible whatever the woman wants to hear,
but the man does not want to say.
You're right...
In humans, it's not enough to have a woman and a man...
here even the feelings are expressed seeing the class,
I am less educated...
that's why I don't grasp quickly.
(Sobbing)
I thought you were a tough girl...
but here you are, crying...
Girls don't need any reason to cry...
You read so many stories by Sharad Chandra
but you don't understand a woman's heart...
I came all the way from my room just to listen to these taunts...
Why did you come?
Go back to London to your fair-skinned girls.
I don't like fair-skinned girls...
I am a simple Bengali
who eats fish and rice...
But Shabri, try to understand...
I can't spend my life here...
Eventually, I will have to return.
Why do you have to go back...
For whom?
You have no one in this world...
Who told you?
It was written in Khagen's letter...
I have a life even outside of what's written in the letter
By the way, even I don't feel like leaving this place...
why leave then?
Alright, I won't
- Godess Kali Swear? - Godess Kali Swear
- Godess Shitla swear? - Godess Shitla swear
- Godess Mansa swear? - Godess Mansa Swear
Can I say something?
you look beautiful when you smile...
but even when you cry, you don't look bad...
Shabri's swear...
If you weren't older than me
I would have beaten you so much...
Go ahead, beat
Go... God will punish me...

I often think of settling down here in Hakimpur...
I really enjoy teaching at the school.
After independence, the country will need more educated people.
I understand, Master Mahashay... But where will we live, Master Mahashay?
Right here... where we are
hope you're not thinking of becoming a Ghar Jamai(Dependent Son-in-Law)...?
I'm telling you right now, I won't let you stay as a dependent son-in-law...
My friends will make fun of me.
Fine, you tell me where to live then...
Here, I will sun bathe with my husband in the winter,
get drenched in the rain...
I'll twist ears of my children & scold them!
And then I will come and scold you for scolding my children.
Why did you hit them?
And I will say that the children are not only yours but mine too...
If you love them so much,
then take care of them yourself and go to my parents' home.
Fine... Then I will come to your home and complain to your parents.
Oh God, what mistake did I commit in my past life that I got this husband.
Look, I'm warning you, if you do anything like this...
on the day of Jamai Shashti (festival dedicated to son in law),
my family won't gift you anything.
That's fine. Then I will encroach your house
and become Ghar Jamai (Dependant son in law)...

I think she will become a good friend to Boudi on their first meet
I will talk to you more when I come back...
For now, I want to stay here until Durga Puja.
Reshma Didi...
Preist and Potter have come to collect soil.
Alright... go ahead.. I'll come.
Namaste
We need soil from your courtyard to make the idol of Goddess Durga.
Right, follow me!
- Didi... Can I ask you something? - Yes you can.
Dashbhuja (ten handed) Maa Durga is considered the most powerful and pure,
and yet the soil from our courtyard is mixed with the idol of the Goddess?
Hmm... Strange practice right?
The most sacred form of a woman is Dashabhuja (ten handed) Maa Durga,
and the most impure form of a woman is us,
But still, the idol of Maa Durga remains incomplete
without the soil from our courtyard.
People say that when a man comes here, he leaves his blessings in our courtyard,
and that's how soil from our courtyard becomes sacred...
But I feel that whether it's a Chaste or fallen,
the eternal power resides in every form.
That's why, once every year,
even those who despise us have to bow down before us.
Charulata, has there been any updates from Mohan?
No, Baba. Apart from the letter he sent, there hasn't been any other communication.
He had said that he would return after Durga Puja,
but now even Kali Puja has passed...
There's no news from him at all.
It seems that Mohan has settled in Hakimpur.
(giggle) I have grown old now...
You all understand these things better
so if possible, tell Mahendra to send a letter from his side as well.
Yes Baba,
(Dhak Beats)
Look at this hopeless
our people are participating in their celebrations now?
Akram.. Go & get Abdul
Aabdul, Hasan Sahab has called for you.
Tell Hasan Sahab to come here and dance with us to the beats of the dhak.
What non-sense?
Oh, don't be upset. Let's go.
Aabdul, what's going on?
As the autumn season arrives, my heart starts grooving.
Look, Abdul, we shouldn't mingle with these people too much anymore.
Hahaha...
Mulla (priest) climbs (the top) of mosque & yells does he thinks god is deaf..?
Aabdul!
Oh, it's not my words, it's a saying of Saint Kabir.
Master Ji taught it to Fokru, and Fokru taught it to me.
Before the dhak stops, let me dance. Hahaha
(Dhak Beats)
You see, Boshir, to save our religion from people like them,
we need our own separate nation,
otherwise we will lose our identity...
Come.
Spring went by, Monsoon has arrived, now even autumn is on its way...
Oh dear, would you really....
Still not asleep?
I was just about to go to sleep Granny.
You write beautiful poetry.
Granny, do you secretly read my poems?
Some pages flew to me...
One must take care of their treasure themselves
or it can fall into someone else's hands.
Tomorrow, I will write a letter to Prince Radha Ballabh
and ask why is our son-in-law taking so long to come here.
And one more thing...
I had promised to help in opening a school in Dom colony..
Whenever you find the time,
go there once and distribute some supplies among the children.
They will be happy, and your heart will also find solace. Hmm?
Alright, Thakma
(Dhak Beats & Celebratory sounds)
Pleased to have you princess, Greetings
We're so fortunate to have you in our colony,
How are your studies going?
Very well, Our new teacher is very intelligent, studied in London.
- Is it? - Where is he?
Masterji, here he is!
Basab, Isn't he the one?
Khagen Da, where have you been all these days?
The British government mistook me for a rioter and threw me in jail.
English people are no less.
They have declared us born criminals based on our caste...
Anyway, tell me about the village
The teacher sent by you has done wonders...
The entire village is very happy with him
But Madan Chandra Mahodaya had refused to come...
He landed in a good job in Kolkata.
His name is not Madan Chandra, it's Mohan Chandra...
What?
I knew I would find you here.
- The Prince is here, - Shabari I never lied to you.
Should't be a big deal for you
It's just you all mistook me as Madan Chandra Malik,
I thought you people needed education...
In love, Self & Mutual respect is obvious.
Love is like a bridge...
It can stay only where both ends are at the same level.
If one end is too high & the other is too low,
it is not called a bridge but a ladder...
Mohan Babu, before we forget that
you are going to be the son-in-law of Rani Ma,
get out of here.
Who is he?
Khagen
- Look Khagan brother, - First of all stop calling me your brother.
You outsiders can never be our brothers.
Who is an outsider?
The elite classes..
No one on this earth or entire universe is an outsider..
Everyone belongs here, born here and will perish here
According to Dr. Ambedkar,
Aryans were not outsiders... and Aryan is not a race either...
And as for the caste system?
In the Vedic era, there was no caste system.
You forgot the Purusha Sukta,
where it is said that Brahmins were born from the head,
Kshatriyas from the arms,
Vaishyas from the thighs, and we Shudras from the feet of the Purusha (God).
According to Dr. Ambedkar
The language and style of the Purushsukta
are completely different from the language style of the Rig Veda.
It is highly probable that it was added later.
Besides, not every sentence is read based on its literal meaning;
some expressions are also used as figures of speech.
Brahmins act with knowledge and wisdom
hence they are born from the brain...
a warrior who fights with his arms, so his birth is from the arms...
the merchants do business while sitting, so their origin is from the thighs...
and the laborers who work standing all day, their birth is from the feet.
This society has stopped giving importance to labor...
Why is goldsmith considered superior to ironsmith?
Because the value of gold is more than that of iron...
This is the system you have created...
Once someone gets trapped, Mohan Babu, they never escape.
Mistakes have been made due to ignorance,
but you can't deny that there has been no progress or decline of anyone...
The son of a prostitute, Styakaam
eventually becomes saint Jabali
after whom the city of Jabalpur is named.
Trishanku, born in the Ikshaku dynasty due to his deeds,
becomes an untouchable (Chandaal).
And there is also an incident
where Lord Shiva himself appears before the great guru Shankaracharya
in the form of a (Chandaal) untouchable, says that no human is big or small
every individual possesses the divine element...
Still, Mohan Babu, we do face discrimination!
If someone is facing injustice due to a lack of knowledge and wisdom
then people are responsible, not the culture...
Our culture is like a flowing river
and divinity exists in our culture
so that they can show us the right path and teach us to adapt with time.
Now times are changing,
The upcoming industrial revolution
many such jobs will be emerge that any person of any caste can do...
But let me tell you, in the future,
a different kind of classification will begin...
A soldier's son will be a soldier
the son of a doctor will become a doctor
and the son of a judge will become a judge...
because adopting their father's profession will be easier for them.
Now I understand, Mohan Babu
that by speaking such things,
you have trapped innocent Shabri in your mesh...
but it won't happen hereafter, Mohan Babu. We are with Jogendra.
Jogendra Babu is making a mistake...
History will never forgive him...
At least look at Dr. Ambedkar, whom you respect so much...
he is not going with Jinnah...
because he knows that there are indeed flaws here,
but they can be corrected.
And one more thing
a nation based on hatred is bound to struggles in the future...
We know how to fight, Mohan Babu...
Hakimpur will be a part of Pakistan happily.
You'll find many who'd divide, Khagen babu
But the one's who unite are great ones!
You carry on with your politics
I need to have a private conversation with Shabri.
I don't want to talk about anything... I'm done being laughed at...
He is still willing to accept me... I will forever remain indebted to him...
Uncle, uncle... our teacher is leaving...
- Where is he going? - He's are leaving us forever..
♫ Bumblebee go & tell Lord Krishna, My body burns in falme of seperation ♫
♫ Bumblebee go & tell ♫
Hasan Sahab...
those who have discriminated against us for centuries...
today, one of them has taken everything away from me again...
Shabri, whom I loved since childhood, that landlord's son...
Khagen, if someone has insults you in life,
pray to god that your enemies have a long life
and offer you opportunity to take revenge
(Traditional Purification Mantra - Pavitrikaran)
The ritual is complete...
As a son of a reputed family, he lived with those untouchables for so long...
He has brought utter shame to us
We can discuss all these matters later.
Will the truth change if we discuss it later?
Kena.. arrange some refreshments for the preists..
Blessings
Mohan is going to be the son-in-law of this house.
At least think of his reputation here...
If he doesn't care about his own dignity
what can we do about his respect?
He was lying to all of us and living among those untouchables...
I am guilty of lying to you
I apologize.
But who in this world is not an untouchable?
From the day we are born on this earth until the next 40 days,
except for our own families, we are all untouchables.
When we leave this world, people burn us and take a bath,
you stay away so that the infant doesn't get contaminated.
That dead person may have been infected.
That's why people take a bath.
The scriptures also say to stay away from the shadow of untouchables...
What the scriptures say, we tell them for our own benefit.
But why it is written, that also needs to be explained.
Now you will teach me scriptures?
No, brother...
I won't teach you scriptures.
I want to tell you what I understood...
There is a high possibility
that a dead person or a animal may be infected.
When people burn a corpse or remove the skin of a dead animal
they develop immunity.
But when you or any common person comes in contact with them,
there is a danger of infection...
If you want to create distance with someone,
it should be based on reasons, not their caste...
A few years ago, when the pandemic spread, we became untouchables to each other.
When the pandemic ended, everything became normal.
Similarly, if those who perform these tasks start maintaining hygiene
they should also be treated the same as you and me.
I see that you are becoming more and more argumentative.
Dada, the scriptures are not only for the untouchables,
but they also mention the Brahmin doctors who treat everyone...
It is said not to accept food from their homes...
And the reason is the same as untouchables...
You spent 5 years in London, and you forgot your religion(Dharma)?
I have neither forgotten my Dharma nor can I ever forget it.
I had one last question for you.
if lord Ram can eat the berries eaten by Shabari
so how did Mohan become impure by eating the food cooked by Shabri's hands?
I have always said
That people should be kept under control...
But no...
what do you expect from a human?
The more freedom they get, they forget their limits.
Why are you stretching the matter?
Humans make mistake, so did Mohan.
I haven't made any mistake.
I have only loved.
And I have loved a girl who doesn't belong to my caste.
If I am a criminal for this
then there must be many such criminals in history...
and they are praiseworthy
See, do you see him...
this person doesn't even have an ounce of shame left.
Thakurpo, you go away from here...
We need to talk.
On one side, the royal families of Hakimpur and Lotaiganj were
in a strange dilemma due to Shabri and Mohan...
while on the other side, the entire country was caught in the dilemma of division,
whether there would be partition or not...
Look, here we have 40% Muslims... 60% Hindus,
but among them, there are 25% Dalits...
And the leader of Dalits is Jogendra Nath Mandal,
he has already assured Jinnah Sahab that our 25% will be with you...
(Crowd Cheer)Leaders of every community, every region,
were concerned about the welfare of their public...
whose decision would be right and whose would be wrong
the answer to this was now solely and only in the future...
Hail Mother Bharat! Hail Mother Bharat!
- Long live Rani Maa! - The harvest for this year is complete.
Give us our share.
Isn't he the one whose house our Mohan was staying?
Brother, hasn't the fraud teacher showed up yet?
Naata, we have come to collect our share of the harvest.
When it comes to personal matters, we will discuss them separately.
No Madhuri, don't give her any old saree.
I bought this Banarasi saree with great aspirations for my wedding,
even though I knew I could never get married...
Many times, I thought of setting it on fire or throwing it in the water...
but I couldn't... There's an attachment to this saree...
and when I saw you, I knew I would give this saree to you for your wedding.
I don't know, Mohan
whether I love you
or if I have fallen in love with the sweetness of contemplating love.
I don't even know if love exists(or not).
But now, I cannot let go of this emotion...
the emotion that is named Mohan.
You have turned a mere human into a god, Basab...
someone who hasn't fully become human yet.
I don't know what you are.
I don't know what my grandmother thinks of you
or what your family thinks of you
I just want to see you happy from the depths of my heart...
If marrying Shabri brings you happiness
then go ahead and marry her
but don't leave me...
if nothing
you keep me
as your mistress...
I can leave behind my pride and ego
but I cannot stay away from you...
Just out of pity...
Keep me close to you.
Basab...

Many hundred years ago
there was a poet
who wrote a bhajan (devotional song) about the sautan (co-wife).
The poet was born into a Muslim family
but he fell in love for Lord Krishna.
During that time,
even the doors of the temple were shut for the lower caste people.
So, who would open the doors of the temple for a Muslim?
It was then that the poet expressed his anguish and said,
"Krishna is my beloved, my life. And this Hindu is sautan (co-wife),"
and the temple where his beloved resides, that temple is the home of his sautan...

Khukumuni
Do you recognize me, Shabri?
You are the landlord's daughter.
who doesn't know you?
But the fact that you recognized me is a big deal for me.
Since I gained consciousness
I have only had Mohan in my eyes.
And today, when I met Mohan
I saw the search for you in his eyes.
That's why it wasn't so difficult for me to recognize you.
What can I do for you Princess?
You know, Shabri
people say that
I am the most beautiful girl in this region...
Not just from Bengal, but I receive marriage proposals from every corner
from every Royal Family of India...
just because Mohan chose you over me,
I have come to meet you ...
Princess...
People are right when they say
Love is a strange feeling...
If the heart falls for a witch
even fairies can't match up to it...
Our families have known each for over seven generations
We brought you from Kashi with the promise
that your descendants will be taken care of by my husband's family...
And till today, we have fulfilled that promise.
Her highness
please tell us what you want from us.
forgive our son from your heart.
We can't see our son suffering like this...
You tell us, what should we do?
His highness
you are aware that this unmatched union can never happen.
Not only the caste
even if the statuses don't match, people don't maintain ties...
And why would they have any relationship when both families cannot even
properly participate in each other's weddings, celebrations and festivals?
If you don't mind, there is a solution, her highness.
What?
Let your son-in-law marry our daughter
and keep our daughter as a mistress
What kind of a father are you?
Aren't you ashamed to say such awful things?
Did we say anything wrong?
Yes, the mess you created while staying here
we have to clean that up.
Is it a sin to marry someone with respect and consent?
Mohan Babu!
we are not meant to be one (family)
And our society doesn't accept such intercaste marriages.
Even the mixed-race children of such couples
are given the lowest status in our society...
Look at us, the scriptures say that a shudra (lowest caste) father
and a brahmin (highest caste) mother gave birth of a chandala (low-caste) child
Where do you learn such things?
I have been living here for so long, and yet you talk like an idiot
And if you were born from a Brahmin mother and a Shudra father
you should be proud of it... You have become half a Brahmin...
Because in ancient times, a person's identity was not just determined by their father
but also by their mother...
If Pandu's sons were called Pandavas
then Kunti's son was called Kaunteya
and Madri's son was called Madrey...
Even Shri Krishna is referred
to as Devkinandan (Son of Devaki) and Yashodanandan(Son of Yashoda)...
And as for caste, it is not based on birth but on actions...
Raja Harish Chandra...
became a Chandal (Untouchable) for the sake of truth
Vishwamitra...
became a Brahmarishi from a Kshatriya out of a desire for knowledge,
Even King Agra Sen
became a Vaishya under the influence of compassion
and even the Last Hindu Emperor of North India
Hem Chandra Vikramaditya, was not a Kshatriya by birth...
King Suhail Dev...
who taught the barbarians a lesson during the medieval era
was also not born a Kshatriya...
Even the brave Jhalkari Bai,
who fought shoulder to shoulder with Rani Laxmi Bai
was not born a warrior princess...
And who knows how many castes
have either converted due to fear of these Mughals
and invaders or disappeared in the forests...
They even accepted the task of cleaning human wastes to protect their faith.
You are a descendant of such illustrious ancestors...
Bygones are bygones, present is the truth.
Exactly
If we don't change our present, how will our future change?
Changing whats wrong is also our duty.
But how will that change?
Will your society give your and Shabri's children
the same status that you have received?
A fishing woman Satyawati gave birth to a Rishi Parashar's child,
who grew up to be a great scholar, Ved Vyas,
And Satyaawati & Shantanu's children sat on the throne,
The character of Lord Ram is diverse...
different writers and poets have given prominence to different aspects...
In one such story...
There is a description of Shri Ram and Sita's swayamvar...
Vishwamitra asks Shri Ram
that you belong to Ikshvaku dynasty
Sita has been raised by Janak, but nobody knows her roots
will you truly marry Sita after breaking the bow?
Ram says yes, I will definitely marry her.
Vishwamitra then asks if she will become his wife.
Ram says yes, only Sita will become his wife.
Vishwamitra then asks if her descendants will sit on the royal throne...
because the queens from powerful lineages have
the first right to sit on the royal throne...
Shri Ram says
that apart from Sita, he will not marry anyone else.
Vishwamitra says that kings traditionally marry
multiple women for political reasons.
Shri Ram says that what I am going to do today is the tradition.
But don't forget, Mohan Babu,
even Lord Ram had to get separated from Mother Sita
For what reason?
Because of this very society, right?
Any king's first responsibility is towards his subjects, not his family.
In the Treta Yuga, the injustice that this society did to Shri Ram and Sita
we will not allow it to be repeated in the Kalyug.
Mohan Babu, you are not Lord Ram.
and I am not Sita...
I cannot fulfill the society's demand for an ordeal.
Your slight desire has hurt me
and I cannot bear it for a lifetime...
nor can my family.
And that's why...
you should go,
for the sake of lord Ram that you were narrating...
and please go... go away.
"Long years ago, we made a tryst with destiny,
After centuries of slavery, a nation was on the verge of freedom...
and in the name of religion, a new country had been formed.
- Our story began on 16th August 1946... - you are free to go to your temples,
- and today is 16th August 1947. - you are free to goto your mosques
or any other place of worship in the state of Pakistan...
And tomorrow, on 17th August 1947
The actual map of India and Pakistan,
as created by Sir Radcliffe, will be revealed to the people...
This is why there is tension among the people
in certain parts of Punjab and Bengal
as they wonder whether their area will be in India or Pakistan.
Hasan Sahab, what has happened to Jinnah Sahab...
Why does he sound so weird?
The foundation of Pakistan is based on Islam.
So many Muslim brothers have sacrificed for it.
and now Jinnah Sahab says that there will be no Hindus or Muslims there
everyone will be Pakistani.
Will Pakistan also shelter these infedels with us?
It seems like his old psyche, of secularism,
has hit back to haunt him.
Otherwise, that international body must be forcing their influence...
but one things is certain
A leader first gathers the crowd, then the leader leads and crowd follows...
But in the end, the crowd takes over
and leader has to find his own way behind to run after them
Now, what happens in Bengal, especially in our Hakimpur,
we will decide...
Look, we are 65%
and they are only 35%...
it is certain that Hakimpur will be a part of Pakistan...
but we don't want those people in our land...
Amen...
Now we know our next move...
Hasan Sahab, just as all the 60% Hindus are not united among themselves
not all Muslims are united among themselves despite being 40%...
there are people like Abdul who are crazy, untrustworthy...
they are ours but not really ours.
Boshir...
those who aren't ours
we'll have to make them ours...
Fokru...
Hey! Fokru...
I've brought duck meat for you. You love duck, don't you?
Fokru...
Fokru...
Fokru...
Fokru... Oh Allah...
Fokru... Oh Allah... Ahhh...
Abdul, Akram just told me
that he saw some boys from the Dom community leaving here...
It takes time for a lifeless body to burn to ashes,
but for a living person to shatter from within,
a single moment is enough.
countless people like Abdul, who were broken from within,
threw themselves into riot.
Some wanted to empty their land of non-believers,
while others sought revenge for the atrocities against their own.
And some were simply spectating, setting their own houses on fire...
"Don't spare anyone! take one, kill one!"
Thakurpo, father-in-law was saying that things are not right in Hakimpur...
everything is on fire...
(Sound of fire & Chaos)
Hey brother, what are you doing?
These are our own people, our own community.
Kill these people!
(Sound of Swords, Fire & Chaos)
Shabri...
Shabri...
This is what you wanted, right?
You have your country now?
In this area, everyone either died or ran away.
Whose follower are you?
Gandhi's, Bose's, or Mukherjee's?
Hasan Sahab, an ordinary man is a follower of his own needs.
When he sees faith in someone to fulfill his needs,
he follows them.
You're right.
We also had hopes that one day we would rule.
just like the Mughals and Bengali Nawabs ruled on this land.
Hasan Sahab!
if there are no people of other religions
whom will you blame for your flaws?
If there are no people of other religions, you will fight within your own sects
You will fight for languages.
and in that fight, people like you and me will be the ones to die.
We will have blood ties with those people.
I don't have any blood ties.
My ancestors came from Arabia 600 years ago.
Why don't you go back to your own land then?
Why do you want this land?
Your ancestors might have come here, but you belong here Hasan Sahab.
Just like me, Fish & rice eating Bengali,
Can you be sure that your mother, your grandmother,
or their mothers must have come from Arabia?
Forget Arabic, you don't even know how to speak proper Urdu.
And your leaders identify this as their language...
Everyone wants to show themselves different from others.
Different clothes, Different religion, Different caste,
Different behavior, Different thoughts.
No one sees how many things we have in common
Different ideologies can exist in different countries,
they can even rule, but philosophy of the country cannot be changed
And the philosophy of this country is Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,
meaning the whole world is my family.
Are you leaving me alive?
In this whole area, you and I are the only ones left.
If I kill you, whom will I fight against?
And as per the latest news, Hakimpur has become a part of India now.
I won't go anywhere now.
I will stay right here...
I will die here.
If I die before you, you will have to perform my last rites...
Mohan...
Hey Mohan wait...
- Abdul Da, where is Shabri? - Our people burned her alive...
- Now I will kill you too. - Kill me,
Kill me. After I die, if humanity awakens within you, then kill me...
They killed Fokru too...
He was my only support...
They took him away from me too...
Abdul, you traitor,
You're embracing this infidel? Kill him,
I won't let you alive... I won't let you alive...
Haaaa...
Allah hu Akbar.
Mohan brother, Shabri... Shabri is alive.
- I have hidden her in a Brahmin's town, - Khagen brother
save her,
Khagen brother
Brother Khagen, Khgen Brother,
Shabri...
Shabri...
Shabri...
Shabri...
Shabri...
Shabri...
Shabri...
Shabri...
are you alright?
Master Sahab, we are leaving this place...
Where are you going?
to east Pakistan,
Hindus are coming from East Pakistan to here?
Jogendra Mandal Da has played a significant role in creating East Pakistan.
I've heard that he will have a high position there...
Besides, Shabri doesn't want to stay here.
I want to take her to them...
Jogendra Da has no power in his hands...
neither does Mohammad Ali Jinnah...
everything will be ruined. Don't be foolish, don't go...
Shabri, don't go...
Fine, go...
go away...
Your memories are better than you... At least, you're not leaving me alone...
We're running late...
let's go... hurry...
Shabriiiiiii...
Shabri left...
She left forever...
Understanding a woman's heart is not that easy...
according to Radcliffe's redrawn maps Hakimpur became a part of India,
similarly, Lotaiganj despite being a Hindu majority ended up
in East Pakistan.
Radha Ballabh ji couldn't bear the loss of his land
and beloved son Mohan and passed away soon after.
after his demise
Mahendra and Chaarulata also left Lotaiganj.
Rani Matangini Devi took her granddaughter Basabdatta to London,
to the land of those English people whom she wanted to see India free from...
Hakimpur, everything was destroyed.
What remained were Basabdatta's unfinished poems
and decomposed corpses,
fed by dogs and wild animals.
Only one living person was giving
them the last rites according to their religion...
It is said that even Sayyed Sahab eventually committed suicide,
and Mohan buried his body in the land of Hakimpur.
Shabri started teaching children in East Pakistan,
whatever she had learnt from Mohan, In her way was continuing the deeds
or maybe she was still searching for Mohan in
the books and poems of the children...
- dries her to a gentler flow - dries her to a gentler flow.
Jogendra Nath Mandal became Pakistan's first law minister,
but within three years, he had to flee from Pakistan...
Perhaps Pakistan no longer needed him...
India displaying its magnanimity
re-granted him Indian citizenship.
After Jogendra Nath Mandal left East Pakistan,
the atrocities on people of his community multiplied several times...
From 1950 to 1971,
millions of Hindus migrated from East Pakistan to India...
And a large number of them settled in the Paralkot region of Chhattisgarh.
Leaders like Jogendra Nath vanished into obscurity due to one wrong decision,
forever lost in the history.
On the other hand, within just 24 years of the creation of Pakistan,
claiming their language and rights, rebellion arose within East Pakistan
ultimately leading to the birth of Bangladesh...
But even Bangladesh was not an easy win, many people gave up their lives
Many writers, journalists, intellectuals were killed,
and women were brutally assaulted...
But Shabri continued there,
it is said that even today, she can be seen wandering in the lanes of Bangladesh...
And Mohan? Over time, the people of Hakimpur
began to refer to Mohan Mukhopadhay as Mohan Chandaal,
as he was the one who performs cremations in Hakimpur...
Whenever I see Mohan,
I am reminded of the story of Raja Harishchandra.
But now, in Hakimpur, cremations are no longer done with wood
but with electricity...
No one needs Mohan anymore...
I don't know why Shabri and Mohan are still alive,
holding onto some hope...
For crores of years, the Earth and lakhs of years of human civilizations
have witnessed the constant evolution of nations on the globe.
The way people live will continue to change,
and the new generations will gradually forget the old ones.
the emotions they felt in their time along with their stories
Where Sayyed Hasan was buried, a banyan tree sprouted after some time...
Some say that it houses the soul of a fakir named Hasanpir,
and if someone happens to reach there lost in the night,
the Pir Baba starts conversing with them...
While some believe that it is simply the tree's own spirit...
And some people think it's just fictional tales...
people & their stories!
Some even tie threads of wishes on this tree, yours truly,
But I also have a wish, that Shabri and Mohan meet again...
I don't know if my wish will ever come true...
Until then, I can only share the story of Shabri and Mohan...
