[BELL CLANKING]
Good evening, good evening.
You're lucky, I have a nice
corner room for you on the second floor.
Beautiful view. Newly painted and redecorated.
If you'll just sign your name on the register, sir.
Sorry, I'm not looking for a room.
Jim Scully's expecting me.
- Uh, Jim Scully. - That's right.
He's got Room 106.
Much obliged.
But he's not there now.
Maybe you can tell me where I'd find him.
He's having dinner. In the dining room.
Thanks.
[CHUCKLES] Shenandoah.
- Jim, how are you? - Fine, just fine. You?
Oh, I could be better but I could be a lot worse.
Oh, same here, but I'm plum worried
sitting around town like this, waiting.
It just ain't my style.
Well, your letter took a while to reach me,
but I came as soon as I could.
Well, you did get here, that's important.
You didn't spell it out,
I mean, what it is that you want with me,
just to meet you here as soon as I could.
Well, since your court martial
at Fort Smith, I've been doing
some tracking for the Army.
Not hostiles.
And tracking after Henderson.
And what did you find?
I found him.
He's clerking at a general store.
- Here? - No, not here.
In a town called Clearwater about 20 miles north of here.
I got him pretty well staked out,
and I could take him almost any time, but...
Well, I figured you'd like to talk to him first
before I did that.
You figured right.
Henderson serving in the 2nd with you and all.
He can tell you all those things you have to know about yourself.
Shenandoah.
Looks like you found your past.
? Oh Shenandoah ?
? You're doomed to wander ?
? On beyond ?
? This land so lonely ?
? Oh Shenandoah ?
? You're doomed to wander ?
? So roam ?
? In search of home ?
? Across this land ?
? So lonely ? ?
[HORSES GALLOPING]
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
That's the general store Henderson's clerking at.
This many people on the street
somebody's liable to be in the way.
In there, out here,
innocent people always get in the way.
Come on, let's check in with him.
Howdy, sheriff.
Afternoon.
What can I do for you?
Oh, I got some government business
to take care of here in Clearwater.
I'm afraid you got the wrong town.
There's no, uh,
Lieutenant Neil Henderson hereabouts.
He's clerking in the general store down the street there.
Fred Barnes?
That the name he's using now? Barnes?
[LAUGHS] That's impossible.
I know Fred Barnes, he's a friend of mine.
He has been ever since he first came to town.
He's a good, decent man. There's no violence in him.
No one said there was, sheriff.
This, uh, warrant just mentions one name.
Which one of you two is Scully?
I'm Scully.
- Well, where do you fit in? - I got business with him.
Such as?
Well, it's of a personal matter, sheriff,
I don't think it would interest you.
Well, suppose you try it on me.
We'll see if it interests me or not.
I have amnesia, sheriff.
I don't know anything about my past,
I don't even know my real name. Satisfied?
What's that got to do with Fred Barnes?
One of the things I found out about myself is that
I was a lieutenant assigned to the Western Division.
I went to Fort Smith to search through
the Western Division archives,
trying to find any clue I could.
Anything that would lead back to my past.
And I found out I'd served with the 2nd Regiment,
and I discovered a great deal more.
"July 10th. We cannot survive another attack.
"As yet, no sign of a relief column.
"If Henderson is still alive, he's a deserter
"and worse... a murderer.
"For on this day, he has surely murdered
every man in the 2nd."
And since there was no way of proving I wasn't Henderson,
I was arrested and I had to stand trial.
Your name, sir.
Scully. Jim Scully.
You can positively identify Lieutenant Henderson.
Oh, there's no doubt about that.
Mr. Scully, would you please
identify him now for this court?
Sir...
Lieutenant Henderson ain't in this room.
Now, Army's had me hunting after Henderson ever since.
It all leads here.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
Just make sure you're right.
There ain't no doubt about it, that's him.
He look familiar?
No.
Lieutenant Neil Henderson, late of the 2nd Regiment.
I better get back to work.
I'm expecting you for dinner tonight. 8 o'clock?
7:30.
Well, sheriff, it's your town. You want to help take him?
I told you before, I know Fred.
He's not a violent man.
You can take him.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
Well, is there a back entrance to the store?
Yeah, it leads to an alley.
Don't you make your move until you know
I've got the alley covered.
Right.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
Afternoon, lieutenant.
Scully.
The Army sent me to find you and take you back for trial.
Oh, I'd like it to be with no fuss.
[INTENSE MUSIC]
Well, you had a good shot at him. Why didn't you take it?
He's no good to me dead.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[HORSE NEIGHING]
[MUSIC CONTINUES]
Ho, ho.
Easy.
Looks like a broken foreleg.
[GUNSHOT]
Mm, man alone on foot.
He needs shelter.
He ain't gonna be going too far.
Looks like he went off that way.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[MUSIC CONTINUES]
Looks like he went through there.
We'll never get through that brush on a horse.
I reckon not.
Oh, now, all the way out here,
there's only one place he could be headed for.
Fort Totten.
Come on, there's a back trail
about three miles from here.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[MUSIC CONTINUES]
It sure ain't changed much.
Afraid I wouldn't know.
Well, after the massacre
the Army came in and buried everybody.
Carted off all the equipment could be moved.
But they never did send more men in
to bring it back alive again.
They say at night you can hear a bugle
calling all the old soldiers of the 2nd.
All the men who were killed here.
You know, it's a funny thing, Jim.
This is the only place I'm absolutely certain
that I've lived, and yet...
it's blacked out and meaningless
just like everything else in my memory.
Well, let's go find him.
Wait a minute.
Remember, he's no good to me unless he's alive.
Well, that choice just might not be ours.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[MUSIC CONTINUES]
[BANGING]
[MUSIC CONTINUES]
- See anything? - Not a thing, you?
He's got to be.
[INTENSE MUSIC]
Well, now. Looks like we're the ones being hunted.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[GLASS SHATTERS]
Drop the rifle.
All right, now the gun belt.
I mean right now, Scully.
It's been a long time, lieutenant.
Yeah, it has.
We were always kind of friendly.
Why'd you have to come hunting after me?
Oh, now, there ain't nothing personal about it.
I draw Army pay, I do whatever jobs they tell me to do.
Well, this is one job you don't have to do.
Can't you go back and tell them you couldn't find me?
That wouldn't do you any good, they'd just send
somebody else out after you.
You were at the gate, how come you didn't
keep going instead of locking it?
I can't keep running the rest of my life.
Well, I don't know about that.
All I know is, the Army's got rules
and you got to live by them or they're gonna punish you
by those same rules.
I'm afraid you're going to have to stand court martial.
You're not taking me back, Scully.
Nobody is.
[GRUNTS]
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
Shenandoah! Look out!
[GUNSHOTS]
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[GROANS]
One thing I'm sure of, Jim, I never was a doctor.
I'm all right.
There just ain't gonna be no taking him alive,
if it's still on your mind.
It is.
He just ain't in no frame of mind for talking.
To you... [GROANS]
Or anybody else.
[PANTS]
Now, you take my advice.
You slow him down with a few bullets first,
before you start asking all those...
questions you got to ask.
Darkness is on his side, not yours.
That should hold a while.
Start from scratch.
I'll be coming back.

[INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC]
Well, goodbye, Shenandoah.
I sure am sorry about Henderson.
Well, it's not your fault, Jim.
I'm afraid he wouldn't have had it any other way.
You sure you're gonna be able to ride all right?
Oh, sure, sure. I'll just rest up here a few more days,
and ride on back to Fort Smith.
Uh, which way are you heading?
Well, I'm heading south towards Santa Fe.
Needless to say, I'm much obliged.
- Now, you take care now, hear? - Do my best.
[INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC]
? The man I sought ?
? That day was buried ?
? Deep within ?
? The land so lonely ?
? Oh Shenandoah ?
? You're doomed to wander ?
? So roam ?
? In search of home ?
? Across this land ?
? So lonely ??
