Good morning, world!

All: Good morning, Oscar!

[ Whistling ]

Oh, hey, Oscar, did you...

get a chance to read my short story yet?

Of course!

But I don't have time to talk about that right now.

Oh! Right. It's time for your daily scheduled stroll with--

[ Pounding on door ] Hedgehog!

[ Muffled ] Whechwog!

Nothing finer than the moments of anticipation between a knock

and your best friend opening the door.

[ Door opens ]

Hedgehog?

Oscar-- Aah!

Hedgehog's gone. Unreachable.

Maybe for a few months,

mmm, probably for a few years.

She's learning all kinds of grown-up witch stuff,

and when she gets back, she'll be much too enlightened

to hang out with you anymore.

Best to just forget about her.

But I--

Hmm.

Well, obviously, I'm not gonna forget about Hedgehog,

but we always promised we'd get enlightened together.

I should probably work on getting enlightened, too,

so she doesn't outpace me.

[ Gregorian chanting ]

Yes? Hi.

I'm seeking enlightenment.

I'm ready to make sandwiches,

or however you get it.

I've already drawn the haircut on and everything.

It's Ava's eyeliner.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Not so fast there, buddy.

There's a lot more to it than that.

Here, put on these trainee robes and follow me.

We're not just making sandwiches

because we're hungry, y'know.

Making PBJ's is a ritual that teaches us

about the balance of magic.

Each side represents one of the fundamental elements.

The peanut is grit.

Heavy, earthy, the "work" side of magic,

the "craft" in witchcraft,

the "sore" in sorcery,

the labor of our waking hours.

Thus this river runs the color of cardboard,

lumber, and forearms.

The jelly is grace.

Grace can sweeten hardships, bring rest, pleasure,

and play like the evening hours.

Thus this river runs the color of twilight

and whoopee cushions.

And it's this balance

that forms the boldface italics...

of magic.

Wowzers!

Can I try?[ Chuckling ] Oh, no!

You're not nearly enlightened enough for that.

To reach that baseline enlightenment level,

there's just one thing you need to do--

walk around our garden path

exactly 10,000 times.

[ Gasps ]

This, of course, represents

chewing a bite of sandwich with no milk.

This is finally starting to make sense.

At the end of your very last lap, your mind will open

and you'll be ready for prime time.

You mean I'll be enlightened?

Absolutely. Works like a charm.

Now, listen, it's easy to lose your concentration out there,

so don't forget-- focus on your goal

and don't get distracted!

I must have patience and walk the path.

Concentrate on this one goal.

Sue: You're a little sugar cookie.

I could eat you up!

Mom! Shh!

Concentrate...

Would you look at that punim?

Seriously! Shh!

Focus on the path...

That's right, Oscar.

Just put one foot in front of--

Mom! Quit it!

I-I mean--

Shh. Concentrate...

Hedgehog: Oscar, you're in Milwaukee?

Hedgehog?

Oscar: That's not Hedgehog.

That's just my mind.

Concentrate, mind.

I mean, concentrate, Oscar.

Focus on the path.

[ Bees buzzing ]

Oh, man, this path has bees on it?

Focus on the path.

One walk around the path completed.

It's going pretty good, except for those noisy bees!

Uh-oh!

Shh!

Just focus on the path.

♪ Frère Jacques ♪

[ Bees buzzing ]

What's with those bees?

Anyway. Focus on the path.

[ Gregorian chanting ]

[ Bees buzzing ]

Focus on the path. Focus on the path!

[ Groans] But I can't!

Maybe this is a time to think.

What's going on with the bees?

The bees just wanna be heard.

They're mad. They wanna be heard.

If I have to look at one more lavender blossom,

my brain is going to turn to liquid.

Being a teenage bee is torture.

- Yeah, that's right! - Yeah!

I thought all bees like lavender.

Flower fidelity's for old folks, man.

We're teen bees.

We don't wanna spend every day

with the same old lavender flowers.

Is there another flower you like?

Yeah, the beautiful moonflower!

Every night at midnight,

the moonflower opens up her petals

to express her love for the moon.

We wanna visit the moonflower

and make honey with moonflower pollen!

Then what's stopping you?

Well, midnight is the moonflower hour...

But the Queen Bee gave us a curfew of 11 p.m.!

Eleven?

Yeah, that's really crazy, right?

My curfew's 8:15!

I actually negotiated my parents down from 8:30.

They thought I was ready for 8:30,

but I held my ground.

So, you stop watching TV at 8:00?

I watch half of a sitcom

and go to bed and then in the morning,

my mom does a recap of the second half

while I eat my unsweetened cream of wheat.

I once saw the first half of a TV show

where the cool kids ignored the curfew,

and my mom said it ended great!

What if I help you get to the moonflower?

Would you mellow out?

Help you buzz a little softer?

Perhaps.

Hide out in the lavender flowers

and I'll come back and get you at 11 p.m.

I have a plan.

Oh! You're the Queen Bee!

Hey, teen bees.

Fly over to me and hang onto my face.

- That's your plan? - Pretty weird.

A bee beard!

I saw this on TV, too.

Hi!

Just going out by myself for a midnight stroll.

You're the guy who was doing laps all day.

Hey, I thought you were a fresh-faced kid.

Uh, because I've been coming of age spiritually,

I've grown a shimmering beard in just one day.

Mm. Okay.

See ya!

[ Yawns ]

Well, I think I'll pack it in for the night.

All the worker bees are snuggled in their little beds,

I presume.

Okay, good night!

So, you'll buzz more quietly now that you've seen the moonflower?

Yeah, we'll be quieter 'cause we're happy!

Great! Now I can focus on the path!

Ah! Now I can sit down and relax.

♪ Oh, whoa, whoa, I'm your honey bee ♪

Hey, what are you doing here?

What do you mean?

I just got done sneaking all your cohorts

back to their quarters!

Why aren't you with the other teen bees?

You don't want the Queen to see you out here breaking curfew

after having snuck off to see the moonflower

because you find lavender flowers so dreary.

Oh, yes, of course.

Take me to the other teens who you helped "break curfew."

Sure. Just hop on my face.

You know, like the bee beard thing.

The bee beard thing?

Queen isn't hip to those old classic gags.

Just a few steps over here.

Bethie Bee: Hey, look, it's the little monk's hand.

With a bee...?

Beanie Bee: [ Gasps ] It's the Queen Bee!

[ Screaming ]

Queen Bee: You're all grounded, kids.

You're stuck in your teen bee hive for three weeks!

Now I remember--

that's what happened in the TV show.

They all got grounded.

At least the teen bees will be quiet now.

And so ends my first day of walking the monastery path.

Oscar: In the days that follow,

I walk the path many more times.

And for the many nights,

I sleep on the little stone bench.

But I always feel like a jerk

when I hear the silence of the teenage bees.

[ Bee buzzing ]

Buzzing?!

The teen bees are back! [ Laughs ]

Nobody.

Wait, I know what that sound is.

It's the hideous buzzing of my tattle-tale heart.

I owe these bees an apology.

Hey, bees? You in there?

- Oscar! - Our hero!

Wait, hold on. You aren't mad at me?

Never!

Bethie Bee: You gotta try this honey, Oscar.

We've been working on it the whole time we've been grounded.

[ Gasps ] Batilda Bee: It's from the moonflower, Oscar.

If we were not grounded,

we couldn't produce this much of it.

Mmm. Wowzers!

Y'all have outdone yourselves!

I've gotta spread the good word.

Hey, everybody, check this out!

I found something cool.

The bees call it "honey."

Yes, Oscar, we're all familiar with honey.

Yeah, but have you tried it with peanut butter?

It's like a whole new thing.

Mmph, mm.

No, it-- it can't be!

No, I'm just little old--

[ Monks gasp ] Uh...

Hedgehog: Oscar!

C'mon, ya little scamp. Hop on!

Hedgehog! Look at your hat!

Does this mean that--

Oscar, wait! You're at 9,999 laps!
