INNOCENCE UNPROTECTED
A NEW PRODUCTION OF A GOOD OLD FILM
Ornamented and Commented by
When they hammer your head
The skull is hard
And never cracks
Mother's little babe of steell
Dragoljub
Son of our native landl
Teeth and muscles, tried and true
All our hearts go out to you
Aleksic, the falcon gray
Aleksic, you lead the way
Poles, gunpowder, heavy chains
All against you strove in vain
Aleksic, the falcon gray
Aleksic, you lead the way
Aleksic, you lead the way
I N 1 942, I N OCCUPI ED BELGRADE,
LOCKSM ITH AND ACROBAT ALEKSIC
PRODUCED, WROTE AND DIRECTED
A FILM ABOUT HI MSELF, lNNOCENCE UNPROTECTED,
WITH HIMSELF IN THE LEAD ROLE OF ALEKSIC.
ALTHOUGH lNNOCENCE UNPROTECTED
WAS THE FIRST YUGOSLAVIAN TALKING FEATURE FILM,
IT IS NOT MENTIONED
IN THE OFFICIAL HISTORY OF YUGOSLAVIAN CINEMA
BECAUSE IT WAS MADE UNDER THE OCCUPATION.
IVAN ZIVKOVIC, COPRODUCER, PLAYS ALEKSIC'S BROTHER
In spring of 1944,
I brought Innocence Unprotected to the village of Rakovica,
It was a complete print, as well as negatives and sound track,
I placed it in a sealed, watertight canister,
wrapped it in asbestos, and buried it over there,
where it stayed until the Liberation.
I only dug it out in 1 946 and took it to Belgrade,
safe, sound and unharmed.
AS THE SERVANT
You know how it was.
My wife and I had to flee from the Sarajevo theater company.
The Ustasa regime drove us out.
Our stomachs "Ied us in search of bread," as the Croatians say.
Then this film came up.
"Let's help 'em and earn some money."
Miskovic was the main guy in charge.
He had connections with the Germans
and got film stock from Germany.
A certain German officer
provided him with film stock from the black market,
and Miskovic repaid him with ham, salami and other food.
That's how the film was made.
AS THE SAD ORPHAN, NADA
In one scene, Bratoljub physically attacks me.
In self-defense I crack his head open with a vase.
I mean, I crack a vase over his head.
CAMERAMAN AND SOUND RECORDIST
They all wanted to be Ronald Colman or Greta Garbo.
I said, "Cinema doesn't need collaborators. It needs slaves."
I can't play cards, I can't dance,
I had no time to sleep with my wife to produce children -
all on account of cinema.
The fact remains:
Our modern cinema today came out of my belly button.
Not just our cinema, but Bulgaria's too.
It's been acknowledged that Bulgarian cinema
was born out of my belly too.
So I was quite prolific.
AS THE WICKED STEPMOTHER
So we made this film,
hoping it would be good and we'd make some money.
But after it was finished, and after the premiere,
AIeksic grabbed the film and took it on the road
on a tour through Serbia and Banat.
He got all the gold and glory, and we got nothing,
so we'd worked for nothing.
WHILE LADIES WIPED AWAY TEARS, MEN'S APPLAUSE PIERCED ALL EARS
Ma'am.
What is it?
That man's here.
What man?
Mr. Petrovic.
Very good. Show him in.
- Good day, ma'am. - Good day.
Forgive me for disturbing you with my frequent visits.
Not at all.
You're always welcome here. Have a seat.
Thank you.
Every time you visit,
I feel a special kind of joy in my soul.
When I Iook at you, it's as if
I'm reliving the most intimate moments of my youth.
I don't understand.
Why should I awaken these tender memories in you?
It's a peculiar story.
Your brother and I had a romantic adventure together,
but fate put an end to our Iove.
And when we parted, happiness parted with me as well.
Now my third husband has died.
That's sad indeed.
But my Iife wouldn't be so unbearable if I could be rid of my stepdaughter.
I can't stand the sight of her!
She went out on an errand two hours ago and isn't even back yet.
She is indeed a peculiar girl.
She knows I'm wealthy and able to fulfill her every wish,
yet she's cold, almost haughty, toward me.
She won't even Iet me come near.
I know that only too well, my dear friend.
I have a Iittle surprise to show you.
That Mr. Petrovic is here.
That disgusting man is getting on my nerves.
Have a good Iook at these pictures I found under her pillow.
When she returns, I'II Ieave you two alone.
You'II know what to do.
It's him!
Hello.
- I thought the earth swallowed you up. - As you can see, it did not.
How nice of you to finally come home!
Sit down.
If you knew how Iong Mr. Petrovic has been waiting,
you'd wipe that glum Iook off your face.
I'II be off to the dressmaker's now.
You stay here and keep our guest company.
I'm sorry, but I have to go out again.
Don't you dare budge from here!
I'II go and get ready.
I hope you won't find my company disagreeable.
I'm going now. I'II be back in an hour.
Have a nice time.
- Thank you, and good-bye. - Good-bye.
Why so glum?
The offensive in the east began in the early hours of June 22, 1941,
Field Marshall von Leeb moved from East Prussia toward the Dvina,
After heavy fighting between Dnaburg and Riga,
and after Latvia was purged of the enemy,
the Stalin Line along the Latvian-Soviet border was penetrated,
Let me go!
So that's how it is? You spurn my embrace,
yet you Iove a man who's my inferior. I know all about it.
What do you know?
Here are his pictures that you keep under your pillow.
The audacity! Who dares go through my things?
If I only knew
what makes you Iove that scoundrel.
First of all, he's not a scoundrel.
He's Iived an honest Iife under difficult circumstances.
We can all be proud of his deeds.
Unfortunately our people undervalue their own.
Only what is of no worth.
You'II Iive to regret those words.
A mighty body
A powerful will
And muscles of steel
These are everything
To us strongmen
Is this not a man in the true sense of the word?
He has a good body but a corrupt soul.
Nothing commendable about that.
"Sound mind in sound body."
The nobility of his soul is known to all.
You don't say.
I've risked my Iife for years
and with a clear conscience repaid the society
that helped me find my way
by donating millions of dinars
to flying clubs, monuments for fallen soldiers,
children's relief organizations, and so on.
Big deal.
To you, maybe.
Everyone else knows how this man has sacrificed
to show the world what he can achieve.
He once crossed a tightrope with 330 pounds suspended from his teeth.
He's risked his Iife constantly to earn his daily bread,
yet he generously shares his hard-won wages
with humanitarian groups, needy friends and others.
He's a good man,
a man with a soul.
Big deal.
You don't know what it means to fight just to survive
or what it means to go hungry.
You're a faithless and uncaring soul,
incapable of doing any good.
There's no need to insult me just because you Iove the man!
I'm not insulting you. I'm only speaking the truth.
If you weren't so blinded by conceit, you'd go see him -
chained in a cage suspended over explosives,
between heaven and earth.
The fuse burns, Ieading the spark to the explosives
that at any minute will send the cage hurtling to the ground.
With colossal strength he breaks the chains
and bursts from the cage
to save his partner and himself from certain death.
A Iovely story of empty words.
They're not empty words.
Look at this picture.
Stand up, all victims of oppression
For tyrants fear your mightl
Don 't cling so hard to your possessions
For you have nothing if you have no rightsl
Let racist ignorance be ended
For respect makes empires fall
Freedom 's merely privilege extended
Unless enjoyed by one and alll
So come, brothers and sisters
For the struggle carries onl
The lnternationale
Unites the world in songl
So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The lnternationale
Unites the human racel
I don 't believe it.
Then what if you saw him on the Pillar of Death?
His feat on the Pillar of Death
can without hesitation be called a world record.
He has a noble soul,
with the strength of a giant and nerves of steel.
That's why I Iove him beyond all measure.
I can't imagine my Iife without him.
Not another word! I'II crush your Iove for that stuntman!
You shout in vain.
It's 2:00. I must go to him.
- Don't you darel - I must,
He's trying out an airplane maneuver
for the Easter benefit for the destitute. I want to wish him Iuck.
I forbid you!
You beast!
I'II show you!
Why are you rolling your eyes?
- To find a window to throw you out of! - Me?
For God's sake, what's going on here?
That savage attacked me headlong.
- Heavens! Where's Nada? - I don't know.
You'II pay for this, you animal!
Now get out!
I beseech you, forgive me for all that's happened.
I'II overlook everything for your sake, ma'am,
but you must allow me to come again when Nada is in.
Of course. PIease do.
Good day, ma'am.
Look, here it is,
My poor Bratoljubl
I tell you, it's right here,
- That's it. - Right here.
I'm sure she's run off to her AIeksic.
I'II make her bitterly regret this!
It's been 26 years since I Iast saw you.
Don't start crying now.
It makes me so sad. How can I not cry?
We'II all end up here.
Here, take this.
He Ieft us so early.
Poor Bratoljub.
Damn! There was bird crap right where I kissed the cross.
I never thought we'd be meeting Iike this to -
To what?
Bratoljub, where are you now?
You were starving during the Occupation,
You should see what we have now.
Here's some nice chicken for you.
If only we'd had roast chicken back then!
Administering cod-liver oil,
It doesn't taste good,
but it provides essential nutrients,
There's just one thing, AIeksic.
You persuaded me to shoot that film,
but you'II be amazed to hear what really made it possible.
It was that cornbread.
It was expensive, and one had to survive.
This film was made thanks to cornbread.
- It's true. - That's what fed us.
We must thank Zivkovic, our bread supplier in those troubled times.
Yes, times were hard,
but we've managed to survive to this day.
You remember the curfew,
when the actors had to sleep on the floor?
Sure I do.
The times I had to spend the night! - That's all forgotten now.
One night we were shooting. It was about 1 1 :00 p. m.
A car pulls up outside, and Miskovic shouts, "Hide! The Germans!"
He Iocked Bratoljub and me in a darkroom.
They filmed the fall of Stalingrad or something in the studio.
Bratoljub climbed up on a table
and peeped through that hole with the red glass.
"You should see this."
I said, "Don't Iet them see you, or we'II end up
in prison or in a concentration camp."
They filmed for 2 1/2 hours.
- With you two in the darkroom? - Right.
When we got out, it was quite a sight:
miniature ships, this big.
The battle for Stalingrad and the Volga
is a life-and-death struggle,
Oil drives the whole front,
It's the life-giving force behind the army, the navy,
and, above all, the air force,
Oil fuels heavy industry and all transport on the Volga,
The Volga provides the whole Eastern Front with oil and gasoline,
By now even a child understands the importance of oil
in modern warfare,
Whoever controls oil commands victory,
Without oil there is no victory,
We shouldn 't talk too much about it, and you know why.
Everyone denies that anything existed before the war.
They say everything began with Liberation in 1 944.
Understand?
By 1 929...
at my request,
Stevan Miskovic was already filming some of my routines.
From then on up to 1 940,
I regularly filmed all of my routines,
the novelties in my repertoire.
That footage led to the idea of making a film
in which our own language would at last be heard on-screen,
We needed you amateurs, so to speak.
You weren't amateurs in terms of your own art,
but everything else was new to you.
No offense taken.
No offense meant. I'm sorry, but it's a fact.
I mean amateurs in terms of cinema.
You were to join me
the two of you, simple tradesmen, Iaborers,
to roll up your sleeves and make spotlights,
while I joined in as your third partner.
We came up with the idea of sandals with plywood soles.
- When I think of AIeksic - - Tell about those sandals.
The sandals AIeksic made?
He made sandals with plywood soles and sold them.
These "espadrilles, " as they're called,
are popular for their practicality
and craftsmanship,
Enterprising people produce them using hemp,
We started selling them all over Belgrade.
Women of all ages wore them,
never imagining that by doing so
they were helping to finance our country's first talkie.
I wasn't pleased when the film premiered.
When I had the idea for the film,
I meant for it to be shown after the war.
Circumstances Ied it to be shown during the Occupation,
but it was meant to be shown only after the war.
You remember the premiere?
For over a month people Iined up to see it
at the People's Cinema,
INNOCENCE UNPROTECTED It was the first talkie in our language,
and a huge success for its day,
And I spoke the first line,
It was really something,
I 'm sure you remember when the film was shown at the People's Cinema.
Y es.
It was a crowd of the common people,
and they applauded so loudly it almost sounded like a protest,
It wasn 't just enthusiasm for the film,
It was a protest against the German film in color
being shown next door,
Golden City.
That film was in German, and ours was in Serbian,
To the point that the Germans
even flew in a man from Berlin
to see this film that was competing with theirs,
Many people wouldn 't believe that today,
Or that the film was banned, or that we went to prison,
NEW SERBIA
Here in Serbia, drive belts are now being produced from cardboard,
The cardboard is first cut into strips,
The strips are converted into special links,
Five such links are joined with one of steel
and fastened to a steel shaft,
These drive belts are very strong,
The prime minister, General Nedic, said in his speech,
"l want to see my people once again free, united, and happy,
The survival of our nation comes first,
and we shall defend it by every means available,
so rally behind the Serbian banner,
There are some people
who still think only of Yugoslavia,
but I ask them, 'What about Serbia?
What about the Serbian people and their future?'
Brothers, do you want a Serbian cooperative peasant state
where the peasants ' voices are heard,
or do we descend again into nebulous uncertainty
and lose sight of what is truly Serbian?'
The people enthusiastically replied,
'We want a Serbian peasant state, "'

Tasting the first drops,
The solemn funeral for Colonel Milos Masalovic,

The procession then headed for Terazije Square,

You don't seem pleased to see me again,
but you know that I mean only well.
For months you've avoided me, your own brother,
because you believe I've offended you.
My brother...
I will perform an aerial feat today
that many others have attempted and paid for with their Iives.
The same fate may well await me. I don't know.
Therefore, if you feel I've offended you,
I ask you to forgive me.
You have my forgiveness. I wish you good Iuck.
Thank you.
I just came back to my apartment to Iook at your picture
and tell you
that it's a pity we're not performing together today.
But it can't be helped.
Cruel fate separated us against our will,
and we may perhaps never again see each other in this world.
You were so good to me,
and for that you deserve my everlasting respect.
It's been eight years since we were parted.
In the meantime I've found a girl with whom I think I'II be happy.
And yet...
not knowing where in the world you are or whether you're even still alive,
I Iook at your picture and tell you
that in a few hours I'II attempt the aerial maneuver
that you and I rehearsed together for so Iong.
You were fearless, the pride of our nation.
To this day many people remember our performances together.
Come in,
- Darling! - Nada!
What's wrong?
Don't ask.
If Iuck is with me today
and my aerial feat is successful,
our path to happiness will be forever secured.
Nobody in the world will be able to part us, my sweet.
Do my words not fill you with joy?
They do, but -
But what?
So that's how it is.
Darling, I'm worried sick.
I beseech God day and night for your success
and our future happiness.
But in the Iast few days,
as the hour of your aerial feat has approached,
I've been overcome with fear that you'II be killed.
What would I do without you?
Do not fear, sweetheart. Be brave.
But I can't. This feat you're planning
seems impossible to me, and I tremble for your Iife.
Fear not, darling. Everything will be fine.
Set your mind at ease, my darling
I will not be killed
Your love will guard me
From all evil on this day
Be happy, my precious
Like a flower in May
I must succeed now
And amaze the whole world
With my mighty body, my fierce will
And my muscles of steel
I will struggle with all my heart
To return to my sweetheart
It's 3 : 00.
At 4 : 00 I must be suspended beneath a plane over Belgrade.
If my brother succeeds today, I 'II buy drinks for everyone.
I think he will.
To his success.
God grant that you succeed and return safely to me.
There's much I must tell you that I can't tell you now.
- Like what? - Don't be too curious.
Let's go, or you'II be Iate.
So you're back.
You'II be sorry you treated Mr. Petrovic that way,
and your muscleman won't save you!
Go to your room!
Dear Lord, have mercy on me, a poor orphan,
and protect my beloved.
Give him strength and courage in his great undertaking,
and return him to me safe and sound,
for he alone understands my deepest soul.
My first airborne feat took place over Belgrade on April 17, 1 940,
in a domestically produced Fizir airplane
piloted by Spanish Civil War veteran Joze Krizaj, now a national hero.
THE PLANE GIVES THE CLOUDS A KISS
AS ALEKSIC SMILES DOWN AT THE ABYSS
ALEKSIC HAS ALSO SERVED A PRISON TERM
This is Radio Belgrade with the latest news;
Acrobat Aleksic successfully hung by his teeth from a plane over Belgrade,
Thousands of Belgraders
watched the unique feat,
M iss Nada, they just announced that AIeksic did it!
Thank God! My beloved was successful!
Now I 'II be free of that evil woman.
Listen, I need your help.
Anytime, but you must beware of that Petrovic.
He was asking Madam earlier to Iet him in your room.
So that's it!
I had no idea, though I know that evil Iurks within him.
I'II say!
Hurry to AIeksic and tell him I'm in great danger.
I'm on my way!
Last night as I left the shop
My sweetheart's mother bid me stop
Cheers.
Ladies and gentlemen, forgive me, but I'm a bit tipsy.
My brother, the acrobat AIeksic,
successfully performed an aerial feat today
that no one in the world has ever pulled off.
I therefore invite you all
to eat and drink at my expense,
and I wish you all a good time.
You see how quickly time passes?
Everything changes except us.
It's true.
Listen, you remember
the worry I caused you when I had to throw
a Iasso around that chimney?
If that patrol had come by earlier,
they'd have Iassoed you right into a concentration camp.
There's the building in the film, remember?
Yes, from here I jumped toward that building,
and then I jumped with the girl from the movie theater.
Yes, your information is correct.
I competed in the contest for the nicest Iegs
in Yugoslavia at the time,
back when it was Serbia, Croatia and SIovenia.
They decided I had the most beautiful Iegs.
It came out in a magazine,
Iike a cameo,
with my face in the middle and my Iegs around the edge.
So we start in A major?
Three, four...
One day Mr, Jan said
That his youngest boy was always drunk
He goes to see Freda 'cause everyone else does too
And she 's got things he likes
She deserves the highest praise for having
A nice, warm little cubbyhole
And with pretty eyes all aglow
Whatever you want she offers it at once
I'm off again to Freda 's I really like it there
Whatever I want she gives it right away
God help you, dear son of mine
You 're out all night long
Father, I went to Freda 's, since everybody does it
She 's got things I really like
She deserves the highest praise for having
A nice, warm little cubbyhole
And with pretty eyes all aglow
Whatever you want she offers it at once
I'm off again to Freda 's I really like it there
Whatever I want she gives it right away
I've been in politics since my tender youth
But I always reduce things down to their root
To those in power goes the praise
I run around getting their size
Who 's about to fall and who 's about to rise
He who clings to those on the rise
Will always get a big fat prize

It seems you forget how old I am,
but since you're so curious, I'II grant your wish.
If I fail, you won't mind,
because, as I said, you know how old I am.
THE HUMAN CANNONBALL
Since I was originally a metal worker by profession,
to this day I have great respect for a hammer.
Light!
The dogs want to fly too,
From Moscow to distant frontiers
From southern mountains to northern seas
Man goes like the master
Of his boundless fatherland
But if the enemy tries to break us
We rush in merciless assault
We love our motherland like a bride and protect her like our kindly mother

Mr. AIeksic, where have you been?
- What is it? - Miss Nada's in grave danger.
- What danger? - Madam's Ietting a man in her room.
- Why? - She hates Miss Nada for Ioving you.
Now I understand what's going on
and the woes of a motherless girl!
How true!
- Listen, my friend. - I'm Iistening.
- Let's show these ruffians! - Yes, Iet's!
Hurry back and help Miss Nada all you can.
I'II be sure to get to her before that beast carries out his vile plans!
Let's go!
Come in.
Ah, Mr. Petrovic.
Where's that wildcat that keeps dodging me?
- Not so Ioud. - I'II show her who she's dealing with.
- PIease sit down. - Thank you.
Radio Belgrade announces the first Serbian broadcast
of a live public concert from Terazije Square
featuring a German military band,
As we've agreed, you ' II go into her room.
If she resists, show no mercy.
Don't worry about that.
I know what to do.
Don 't you worry,
There you are, my Iittle wildcat.
After the right flank had been forced to retreat,
the main thrust advanced against the Russians at Bryansk and Viasma,
As the battle for Kiev raged, German forces moved northeastward,
- I ' II tame you now. - Don't come any closer!
What?
T ry that, will you? I 'II show you a thing or two!
Let me go!
Let me go, you beast!
Help!
You savage!
Go on, hit me again!
Go on, hit me!
I'II show you now!
Get up!
What are you doing here? Get out, you animal!
It's this animal's turn to bite!
What? You'd dare bite me?
Don't beat me, ma'am. I've done nothing wrong.
Shame on you, attacking a young Iady! You savage!
Is this the police?
What? A house robbery in broad daylight?
We'II be right there.
Hurry, it's urgent!
Trying to make the scene realistic, I beat my fellow actor so badly
that he spent two weeks in the hospital.
I've had many boards Iike this broken over my head.
We'II use this skull here
to demonstrate how hard the human skull is.
My apologies to the dearly departed.
In 1930 I fell 50 feet
onto bare concrete.
Amazingly enough, I was unharmed.
Due to this unusual feat,
the citizens of Sarajevo dubbed me "the man of steel."
Unfortunately...
that title was short-Iived.
It shattered against the pavement in Split.
There I fell from almost 65 feet...
breaking both Iegs
and two vertebrae in my spine.
HE LOST 1.77" IN HEIGHT
I Ieft the hospital
a complete invalid
and was warned to wear an orthopedic corset the rest of my Iife.
Out of necessity,
I fashioned a metal corset in the following manner.
At this advanced age I keep fit
by doing auto-suggestive exercises.
This is how it works:
For example, I pretend to Iift a weight I can't Iift.
And now the weight I can Iift.
Next come the coil springs,

Son of our native landl
Teeth and muscles, tried and true
All our hearts go out to you
Aleksic, the falcon gray
Aleksic, you lead the way
Poles, gunpowder, heavy chains
All against you strove in vain
Aleksic, the falcon gray
Aleksic, you lead the way
When they hammer your head
The skull is hard
And never cracks
Mother's little babe of steell

Weren't you afraid?
Where you're involved, I know no fear.
Who is it? - Policel
Hands up!
Leave him alone. He's innocent.
We're taking him to the station, where he can explain
why he attacked this man, who claims he was a guest here.
He didn't attack that man.
I'm Iaw-abiding, and I will go with you.
Just don't put chains on my wrists.
If you do, I'II break them right off.
Maybe if they were made of twine,
but ours are made of steel.
You'd never break them.
Let him try. - Sure.
Look, he broke 'em.
By God, so he did.
- I'm frightened. - Don't be.
That man is a marvel.
He sure is.
Let's get him!
Hear that? Sounds Iike groaning.
Quick, a chair.
That's the hoodlum who attacked me!
Come here!
So you're one of those guys who attacks women?
I didn't attack anyone.
I just wanted to protect Miss Nada from this human beast,
but I bumped into Madam, drooling as she eavesdropped
on Mr. Petrovic as he attacked Miss Nada.
Get ready to come with us, ma'am.
- You'II remember this! - Ha! I'm scared.
So who's the man who carried off Miss Nada?
Miss Nada sent me to get him to save her from this pest.
You got a good beating,
and now you'II get six months in jail
for deceiving the authorities and assaulting the young Iady.
I have chains for you too, but these won't break.
Put 'em on him.
See, buddy? Justice has won.
Do you realize who I am?
We'II find that out at the station.
That was beautiful, but I'd prefer to dance our kolo.
Let's go.
I was in a contest Iast summer to choose the best-Iooking man.
The Iadies chose me out of hundreds of handsome men.
I'm not at all surprised,
especially with those seductive eyes
and that cute Iittle nose that drives women crazy.
So many Iadies have told me the same thing.
Have no fear when you're with me.
Come what may,
I'm happy to be here in this room with you again.
Was that picture there when I visited earlier today?
It was.
You just didn't notice it in your excitement.
Who is she?
My former partner.
I'm indebted to her for my success.
But fate decided we were never to see each other again,
so don't be upset on her account.
You are my only Iove.
I swear by God, my darling
With my whole being
I have never loved another maiden
As I love you
For you are
My beloved pet
My only love

After the Liberation, nobody would believe
that the film was made without the Germans' knowledge.
Because of this film,
I was prosecuted for besmirching the national honor,
which is no minor matter.
A bit indignant - or a Iot - at such a serious charge,
this is what I said to the public prosecutor.
"Comrade, everything I said is the truth.
If you find that a single word is not true,
put a bullet in my head at once."
It seems my words were convincing.
The prosecutor did not hesitate Iong but simply said,
"You may go home. I'II summon you if I need you."
A few months Iater,
I was informed that all criminal charges had been dropped regarding my film
