An innocent dairy farm turned museum of tragedy,
tonight's eerie tales are more than what they seem.
For the first time ever, we will investigate
three separate hauntings in hopes to uncover
the hidden truths and secrets of...
[both] Kawartha Settlers' Village.
[spooky music]
[Luke] What are you running from?
[Matthew] Don't stop, Luke, it's a ghost!
[Luke] What do you mean?
In 1833, a quaint town was founded that quickly turned into
one of Ontario's largest farming communities.
But don't be fooled by the scenery.
These lush pastures still hold secrets of their haunting past.
A collection of small towns surrounding the lake,
the Kawarthas were mostly used as farmland when founded,
going on to become one of the largest dairy manufacturers
in the province.
However, in the 1930s,
one of the town's biggest farms would shut down.
As the farm industry began to die down in the Kawarthas,
many of these historic homes and buildings were left.
And instead of tearing them all down to create more space,
the Heritage Society wanted to create a place
to preserve its history,
and in 1990, they opened up a museum to do just that.
Over the next 30 years,
buildings from all over the Kawartha region would be moved
to the farmland turned Pioneer Village,
bringing their historic architecture
and eerie pasts with them.
Tonight, we'll go beyond our limits
as we investigate not only three ghosts,
but three separate buildings they're said to haunt.
We'll look for the spirits of a farmer,
a child, and a store owner.
All said to be lurking in the shadows of
the Kawartha Settlers' Village in...
[both] Bobcaygeon, Ontario.
[electronic music]
My name is Rachel Cross, and I am the founder
and lead researcher of the Paranormal Seekers.
The town of Bobcaygeon is very light,
very airy, very welcoming.
When it starts to get darker, it's a little different.
Kawarthas Settlers' Village has this vibe.
It's got this pull, this magnetic draw.
It is one of the most active and haunted pioneer villages
that we have investigated.
There's definitely a haunting there.
It's quite creepy, quite ominous.
It's definitely haunted.
With all the history of Kawartha's Settlers' Village,
there are so many more spirits here to discover.
Oof! This has been one hell of a summer.
Ugh, I see what you did there.
[Luke] So wait, what is this?
Well, that's what we're here to find out.
Okay, we're not the Hardy Boys.
I know. I didn't book that one.
-But you know who did? -Do you know who did?
?
[screaming] Someone help!
Oh. [chuckles] Honestly, I don't even know where I am.
I was just being dramatic.
Hi, my name is Krista Nazaire,
and you may know me from The Hardy Boys.
[camera shutter clicking]
I love horror.
I don't get scared unless it's a real-life situation.
Like, people are scary.
I'm a believer, but I am a skeptic.
Ghosts I think are harmless. They were people once.
-Demons are here to f-- -[beeping]
I do not want the smoke.
I trust Matthew. I love Matthew.
Matthew is my everything.
I love Luke. I want to follow him around for the day,
but I just know that I would not be coming back home.
Bitch, I'd be dead.
I do not give consent to be possessed.
-Guys. -[Matthew] Wow.
-[Krista] What is it? -[Matthew] Let's explore.
I'm scared.
This is giving what needed to be gave.
This is Kawartha Settlers' Village.
Wait!
I don't really know where I am,
but it is stunning.
These are houses and churches
and places that people frequented?
Yeah, all of these buildings have been
restored to their previous purpose.
They just weren't originally built on this land.
[Krista] It looks like a six-year-old's imagination
of, like, the perfect neighbourhood.
The catch is that death, illness, and suicide
have taken place on this property
or within the walls of these buildings.
There is no building here untouched
by tragedy of some kind.
I would love to live here...
prior to hearing this information.
These boys tell me that we are going to investigate not one,
not two, but several haunted locations.
Have a nice day. It was great having you, thank you.
Bitch, I almost passed out.
[Luke] Our first hotspot for investigation
is the Murphy Barn.
[eerie music]
Whoa. Wait, what?
I can't see anything. All I see is, like,
the lights that I can see from our phones.
Where-- What is this?
[Matthew] I believe you can figure this one out.
-It's a barn house. -[Luke] Are you sure?
-No. -It's a barn.
-[Krista] Oh. Okay. -It's definitely a barn.
[Luke] Wait, why is there art everywhere?
Why is there various weapons?
-[Matthew gasping] -[Luke] This is really big.
This is a lot bigger than I thought this was.
-[Matthew] Yeah, it's a barn. -Okay-- "Yeah, it's a barn--"
Okay! I don't go to barns often.
Is that a stage?
[Luke] What?
[ragtime music]
In 1860, the Murphy family emigrated from Ireland
to what would be Canada.
This working class family had heard about
the vast expanse of farmlands in the Kawartha region
and set out to create a family farm of their own.
The Murphy Barn was built in 1873,
and is the only still-standing original structure
that belonged to the Murphy family.
This was a cattle farm.
However, there was a call for all milk to be pasteurized
to get rid of the bacteria.
This family wasn't able to do that,
and it caused a tuberculosis outbreak in town,
meaning many people died.
Allegedly, one of the people working with the cows
was so distraught and felt so guilty
that they took their own life in this very barn.
Visitors report that the spirit of a man
said to be the farmer haunts this barn.
Reports consist of aggressive energy,
objects moving as if someone is frantically
searching for something, and most disturbingly,
an apparition has been seen hanging from the rafters.
-Why the barn? -See, those are types
of questions that maybe we should bring in a tool
and you can ask him yourself.
An EMF detector is a tool used to measure
the presence of a ghost.
You should introduce yourself to this gentleman
and let him just know why you're here, what you're doing.
Okay. Hi, barn man.
My name is Krista.
I'm here in your final place of rest. I come in peace.
And... I just wanna talk, you know?
I'm sure it's been a while since you had some friendly visitors.
Let's converse.
Are you present in this barn with us here right now?
Are you being shy?
Is this where you died?
[gasping]
I mean, that is the-- No, you have to keep holding onto it.
That is the first interaction we've had so far.
My gosh. Did you hang yourself because you felt guilty?
[Matthew gasping]
Okay, I'm gonna take a step back.
-[Krista] No, you guys-- -You got it, you got it.
-Ask if it's evil. -No!
-Yes! He is. -He's not. Are you evil?
-He's good. We're good. -We're good, we're good.
[Krista screams]
[all laughing]
Don't do that. He's funny.
[all laughing]
[Luke] Do you want vengeance?
-Sir. -Do you wanna kill Krista?
-Light up. -No!
-[laughing] -Luke!
I have to go home. I have to go home.
[Matthew] Our second hotspot for investigation
is the Duggan House.
[eerie music]
Anybody home?
[Luke] Oh, my God, it's so skinny in here.
This is a skinny people house.
[Krista yelps] Whose home is this?
[Luke] This is the Duggan House.
This is scary.
Perfect. And on that...
In 1835, the Duggan family
came to the Kawarthas from Ireland.
They bought a house for $400.
I wish.
[Krista] I should not be here.
This is, like-- My flight or fight instincts
-are raging right now. -[Matthew] What do you wanna do?
-Fucking flee, bitch! -[all laughing]
However, illness was plaguing upper Canada,
and two of the Duggan children fell ill,
passing away inside the home.
Not the kids.
One of the kids, their spirit is trapped
-in that doll. -[Krista gasps]
Paranormal investigators report
that the spirit of one of the Duggan children
is said to haunt this house.
Staff claim that this bear moves around the house on its own,
appearing in rooms it was never left in.
You guys expect me...
-To go. -...to go in there
-with a possessed bear. -Yeah.
-Is this a joke? -[Matthew] Remember when
you said you wanted to be scared?
-This is it. -Yeah, famous last words.
[Luke] Oh, that is an ugly bear.
Matthew, what's the plan?
Okay, so we know that this spirit
loves to interact with this bear.
We have a tool that it can interact with as well.
The ghost robot pinpoints a spirit's location
using infrared sensors.
[ghost robot whirring]
-Like, this is scary in itself. -Okay.
How would you describe a robot to a kid
-from the 17th-- -There's an electric bear.
Electricity is, like, this thing that's invented
that, like, people use for, like, stuff.
Move the electric bear forward
if you are the child in this room.
Move the toy in front of us to where you're standing.
Point us to your favourite spot in the room.
What's weird is the robot is turning around slowly.
Are you going towards the Duggan child who died here?
If yes, stop moving.
If you are going towards something else that is here...
[Krista gasps]
[Krista] Oh, my God, no way!
[Matthew] It just needed instructions.
-No! -It just needed instructions.
Oh, there are for sure spiders down here. For sure.
Oh, my gosh. Okay.
-Yikes. -Krista--
Oh, my God. Okay, I've never seen him go red or green.
-I don't know what he's doing. -I might've fucked up.
Why? What did you do?
'Cause maybe I should have said what I have to say first.
Say it now.
I've put something in this room
that's a whole lot more evil and a lot more old.
But the robot, I think, was confused,
'cause it kept pointing at the thing
that I have stashed in the room instead of the teddy bear.
[Matthew gasps]
So, this is a doll.
No, no, no, no, no. I know exactly what this is.
I thought since there was a ghost in a bear,
which is a toy, the ghost would want a friend.
You know what this is and you're reacting like this?
-Now I know what this is! -You're scared?
-I'm scared! -Now I know what this is!
[Krista] What is that?
I'm looking to Matthew for comfort,
and I look at his face, and he's as scared as me.
Look at the face! Look at the--
The whole thing is that this is, like, a cursed object.
Let me get this straight. Okay.
-This bear is haunted. -[Luke] Yes.
-This doll is haunted. -No, this is a demon.
I set up a playdate for the teddy bear, okay?
Playdate was teddy bear, demonic doll.
Best friends, love it. Mwah, mwah.
I figured that they could be friends. Do you wanna hold it?
I absolute-- [screaming]
I don't wanna touch it.
[Krista screaming]
[Matthew] No, no, don't.
-Oh, my God. -[Krista exclaims]
It touched me! Goodbye!
[Matthew] A flashlight turns on and off
when a ghost tries to communicate.
Okay, the demon, if you're here with us,
are you-- Turn the flashlight on.
I think you should apologize to the demon.
-Okay. -Just to make sure
nothing follows you home.
[exhales]
Turn on your light--
-The Duggan child! -[Krista] Wait, I-- Guys.
You didn't finish the apology, though!
Wait, maybe it knows I'm genuine.
I think it thinks it's safe with you right now.
The children-- [gasps]
-Oh, my God. -Oh!
[Krista] What's going on? They're battling?
[Luke] Duggan child, kick the demon's ass.
I am like, wh--
Okay, this is-- this is insane.
-Wait. -[Luke] Oh, my God.
[Krista] Child's in the bear.
Is there a spirit or someone causing you harm in this house?
He's like, "Yeah, right beside me."
[Matthew exclaims]
Sorry. Oh! I don't know why she's so creepy.
-Krista, go sit. -Absolutely not.
Put them both on your lap.
Our third hotspot for investigation
is the general store.
?
Oh, my God. What is this?
[Krista] These are the things they used to sell
back in the days?
Oh, my goodness.
I don't know what I'm sensing.
Like, what's going on here?
Before we say anything, I just wanna be clear:
I am gay. Is there anything you wanna say?
We come very queer, and we are here.
Built in what people assumed to be the late 1890s
and early 1900s,
the general store was a staple to the original settlement
of the Kawartha region.
I think the thing that's most interesting to me
is that there's personal objects in here.
Feels really dark and sombre in this room
and I think this is the first time tonight
that I'm getting this feeling.
In the 1980s, the store was purchased,
becoming a popular antique shop in town.
This is the 1980s,
way before, like, you could be gay,
and there was an owner, and he was a gay man.
And he has a coworker that he's hired, he's a manager,
and the coworker is another gay man.
The two were having an intimate relationship.
Then the owner hired another employee
-'cause the store got busy. --Yeah.
-It was another man. -What happened?
And he also started sleeping...
With the other one?
-The first boy found out. -Mm-hmm.
And as you can imagine,
it got messy.
He confronts the owner
and murders him in this building.
When the news broke of the murder,
the town was in shock.
The building itself, a historic landmark of the town's past,
was saved from demolition when it was moved to the museum.
However, changing the building's location
wouldn't change its past.
When you walk into the general store today,
you feel very, very heavy.
A lot of it is he is reliving the experience of his death.
[Krista gasps]
[Luke] Oh, my God.
This would've been the back office.
Okay.
Paranormal experts report the spirit of the store owner is
said to haunt the back office where his murder took place.
Many have reported feeling a sharp sensation of pain,
the sound of unexplainable thuds,
and a general feeling of chaos,
as if you're in the presence of a violent struggle.
You hold this, I'll go grab the tools.
A REM pod is a tool that will detect
the presence of a ghost.
I was thinking on stove, yeah.
If the shop owner is with us,
could you approach our REM pod?
-[REM pod beeping] -Oh.
I mean, that's a green flag right now, you guys.
Were you murdered here in this room?
-Was it in this-- -[REM pod beeping irregularly]
And that sounds like an ambulance.
Has this ever happened before? What does it mean?
Okay, well, blue-- these-- these are stronger responses.
-I don't know if it's the-- -[beeping continues]
It might be the fact that it's on something that's cast iron?
[Luke] Put it on the floor, see if it still does this.
Then I'll believe it's the cast iron.
-Yeah. I'm with you. -Sure.
-[beeping stops] -Okay.
If you are the store owner,
do what you just did up there again.
[REM pod beeping]
Well, damn, I really spoke too soon on that one, huh?
-He really showed you. -Yeah.
[REM pod screeching]
Wow. I've been gagged and gooped by this ghost.
rlboss, are you pissed that your boyfriend killed you?
-He wasn't his boyfriend. -Mmm.
Are you upset that your lover killed you?
-[REM pod beeping] -Mm-hmm.
Child...
Do you identify as a queer individual?
Or you were just gay.
[REM pod beeping]
Classic run-of-the-mill homosexual.
Okay, I'm gonna sit down.
We tend to, like, get places when we're, like,
-down and dirty with them. -Okay.
Are you stuck here because you died violently?
[REM pod beeping]
That was a quick response.
Were you in love with the one who happened to murder you?
-So no. -[REM pod beeping]
Okay, maybe. It's complicated.
[eerie music]
That concludes our investigation into
-Kawartha Settlers' Village. -And now it's time to decide
if this location is truly haunted.
Or not.
[Matthew] In hotspot one, the Murphy Barn,
the spirit of the farmer is reported by visitors
to move objects around, and some have even seen
an apparition of the man hanging from the rafters.
-I loved the barn. -Yeah.
I loved that it was like the movie Pearl.
-Mm-hmm. -I also love that it had this,
like, Hannah Montana: The Movie homage.
-Based on the hauntings... -Yeah.
...the banging or seeing the apparition of a man,
that did not happen.
But when we pulled out our EMF detector
to try and start communicating with the spirit of the farmer,
we got a massive spike.
[gasping]
We're in a barn that's made of wood,
so nothing should be creating a frequency
or a disturbance to set our EMF meter off.
[Luke] In hotspot two, the Duggan House,
the spirit of a child is reported by paranormal experts
to be trapped inside a teddy bear,
with claims that the toy moves on its own
as if the child is playing with it.
In hindsight, I think the doll might've been the wrong move,
'cause I think it overtook the bear.
When we put the bear next to the doll with the flashlights,
we were getting rapid responses from either.
-The child-- -Oh, my God!
I will agree with you, though.
The doll was overpowering the bear.
Based on the hauntings, the bear was supposed to
move on its own, and that did not happen.
Do I think the doll might have a demon in it?
Fingers crossed.
[Matthew] In hotspot three, the general store,
the spirit of the shop owner is reported by paranormal experts
to create a sharp sensation of pain, unexplainable thuds,
and create an overwhelming feeling of chaos
as if you were in the presence of a violent struggle.
This is like, one of the first, if not the only--
Only, like, murder scene.
Yeah, crime scene we've ever investigated.
And it was a gay tringle.
When we pulled out the REM pod and put it on the floor,
all of the lights went off.
Were you in love?
[REM pod beeping]
Based on the reports of banging or feeling like
there's all these volatile things going on around you,
that did not happen.
Well, we might've been the volatile things in that space.
-Well, that's also true. -It felt uneasy being in there,
but I don't know if that's because we just knew
that this was the scene of a murder.
[producer] The million dollar question, Krista, is,
do you think the Kawartha Settlers' Village is haunted?
The Ghosting verdict...
Of our paranormal investigation...
Into Kawartha Settlers' Village...
Is...
Oof.
-Haunted. -Like... ehh.
-Haunted. -It's not--
Three separate buildings, three separate ghosts.
It's not haunted.
The Kawartha Settlers' Village...
is haunted AF!
It's not haunted, but something tragic did happen there,
and I think it's important that we acknowledge that.
These spirits were communicating effectively.
It just felt very unsettling.
It felt like I am not welcomed here
and I'm not supposed to be here.
Never again will I do that.
I hope you enjoyed tonight's spooky tale.
Make sure you come back for moo-re.
-Like a cow? -No, I got it.
