What do public education
and public execution have in common?
We're about to find out
as we venture into one of the oldest
and most haunted schools in all of Canada.
[both] Lunenburg Academy.
[eerie music]
[Luke] What are you running from?
[Matthew] Don't stop, Luke, it's a ghost!
[Luke] What do you mean?
As one of the earliest settlements in Canadian history,
the town of Lunenburg comes with a dark and sinister past,
making it one of Canada's most haunted locations.
The first hangings in Lunenburg took place in 1761,
just eight years after the town was established.
On a hilltop overlooking farmland and shoreline,
the location became the town's Gallows Hill.
In the 1860s, the Council of Lunenburg
wanted to create a school big enough for all of its children,
and when they looked for land to build the school on,
they realized the town already owned a large plot.
The town opened its doors to its first academy,
built on the land of Gallows Hill.
So to be clear, they built a children's school
on a mass execution site,
which by this time was also used as a cemetery.
And they thought, "Ha! What a great idea."
As we head back to class,
we'll look for the spirits of a teacher,
a young girl, and a murderer,
all said to haunt the eerie halls of Lunenburg Academy in...
[both] Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.
[electronic music]
-I'm Lomar Mendz. -And I'm Chelsey Lacelle.
We are paranormal investigators
based out of Halifax, Nova Scotia.
We document the untold stories of the province here,
the hidden paranormal gems.
[Chelsey] Lunenburg holds a lot of paranormal history.
The Lunenburg Academy is kind of like a gothic castle.
When you walk into the doors, it feels like you've entered
a portal and you have energy just surrounding you.
The Lunenburg Academy is definitely haunted.
Some folks have seen someone standing in the window.
I feel a presence there. It is spooky.
When the building is completely closed,
we've seen shadows within the windows.
You're gonna feel something, you're gonna hear something.
It's not a positive energy.
School may be out, but these hallways are anything but empty.
?
This looks like a school that witches would go to.
-Ooh. Did you attend here? -No, I'm a bitch, not a witch.
-Oh! So close. -So close.
High school, it's the most chaotic four years of your life.
There's only one person who can help us navigate this.
?
Welcome to where nightmares are made.
Hey, I'm Nikki Roumel,
and you may know me from Ginny & Georgia.
[camera shutter clicking]
-Oh, my gosh. Whew! -[producer] That's a wrap.
Got that done. Okay, let's go. [laughs]
Okay, so I'm super, super open-minded.
I've never personally had an experience with paranormal.
I totally believe people when they do.
Am I scared at all? I would say...
I-- Okay, no.
I would love to be possessed by a ghost.
I'm definitely not afraid of making friends with ghosts.
Making friends with living people is absolutely terrifying.
[ominous music]
-This is it. -Whoa.
[Luke] Hello!
Why does this look like the Titanic?
You know what I found out recently?
What, Luke? What did you find out?
My great-uncle died on the Titanic.
-That's so sad. -Okay.
This is the oldest school in Nova Scotia.
But this is so much more than a school.
Before this school was here,
this is where you would be hung and disposed of.
And now people just hang out here.
But why would you build it here?
-'Cause school's a nightmare. -Yeah.
It's big, it's old,
and it feels like a lot went down.
[Luke] Our first hotspot for investigation
is the classroom on the main floor.
?
Who are these divas?
-The Queens of England? -[Luke] Oh, okay.
Lunenberg Academy has been around long enough
to experience the evolution of different disciplinary methods.
Today we see a classroom as a civilized space.
But this wasn't always the case.
Okay, Nikki, speak to us here. What are you feeling vibe-wise?
[Nikki] I'm definitely feeling the spookiness.
-[creaking] -Wait, did you hear that?
I did hear a little creak.
You heard a little creak from over there, right?
-[Nikki] Yeah. -But you think it
could've been someone. Is someone back there?
[Nikki] Hello, hello!
And it was Jeremy. [laughing]
We're gonna hold a class as we teach you.
It's strange. It's, like, more old-fashioned.
I'm the teacher.
-Sit and shut up! -Sorry.
If you were to guess what this room is, what would you guess?
-Um, a classroom. -You crushed it.
Wow. Passing with flying grades right now.
[Luke] So, at the time that the school was built,
this was back in the time where the teachers could, like,
whip you, hit you, slap you, dunce hat.
And in this room, the childs were in fact
abused by a male teacher.
-You stand up. -Oh, it's my turn
-to teach the lesson? -Yeah.
-Oh, okay, okay. -Thank you.
I've actually prepared for this assignment.
Paranormal investigators report the apparition of an angry man,
said to be a male teacher, residing over this classroom.
People still see his spirit to this day.
He's been heard yelling at people
and telling them to get out because
he doesn't like anybody in his space touching his things.
-So you better behave. -[Matthew] Yeah.
[Luke] Or else.
[slams desk]
[Matthew] An Onvoy allows ghosts to communicate
with visual cues and sayings.
Six predetermined emotions.
But do you still ask it questions?
Yeah, yeah. And you can see its, like, emotional response to it.
I heard a rumour that you weren't a very good teacher.
Have you ever beaten a student?
-Oh! That's sad. -Sad.
It's sad that it beat a student, or, like, sad,
-like, "No, I didn't"? -That we think that?
How do you feel about your students?
-He felt angry! -Angry!
He's literally described as being an angry teacher.
You think we should switch to yes or no now
to figure out some more questions?
-Okay. -[Nikki] Okay.
Are you angry that we're in here?
-[Matthew gasps] Yes. -Yes.
Do you condone violence?
-Yes? -It just said yes.
So he's angry we're here, and he condones violence.
-Oh! Yes again. -That was a double yes.
Oh!
Our second hotspot for investigation
is the music room on the third floor.
-[Luke] Oh, my God. -[Matthew] Whoa.
[Nikki] Is this supposed to be, like, a theatre?
Like, performing?
When Lunenburg Academy was in operation,
the third floor was primarily used for drama, arts, and music.
[Nikki] Whoa!
[playing notes]
-Wait, how'd you do that? -[Nikki] How did I do it?
-Say something about the ghost. -Um...
This is one of the scariest ghosts we've ever hunted.
[ominous note playing]
I feel terrified.
So before it was this school,
there was another school that burnt down.
There's one girl who--
Her story gets so sick and twisted.
[ominous note playing]
Her name was Sophia.
Sophia was an apprentice at a local dressmaker's shop
when one day, as the owner was counting the till,
they discovered $10 was missing from the register.
The owner immediately accused Sophia of theft,
which back then was a lethal crime.
She said, "I did not steal this money.
Someone is setting me up." And they said, "You did it."
The entire town turned on her, including her family,
but she was adamant that she did not steal the money.
But eventually she took her own life.
When she died, a boy came forward
and said, "I took the money. I did it."
Her grave is in this plot right here.
-[Matthew] Yeah. -And on her tombstone,
it literally says, "Falsely accused.
She died of a broken heart."
This is all sad and everything,
but guess who's in this room with us?
Can she get revenge?
Guests and investigators report the sound
of a young girl singing and crying.
Many suspect this to be the spirit of Sophia,
and it's said she haunts this room,
trying to experience the normal childhood she never got.
We have a tool that will help us communicate with Sophia.
A portal box removes static
and amplifies paranormal communication
when using radio frequencies.
[portal box drones]
This is what I sound like when I'm crying.
Oh. Hi, Sophia.
Are you here?
[static buzzes]
Are you buried in this graveyard?
Sophia, we heard that you like to sing nursery rhymes.
Can you maybe get us to a nursery rhyme or a lullaby?
I can't make anything of it, if I'm being honest.
Sophia, girl, I'm so sorry.
Yeah, we heard what happened. We know you're innocent.
[static buzzes]
Boo.
-Dare I say... -It's not working.
I mean, I knew this was gonna be temperamental,
but this is ridiculous.
-Oh, let's try AM. -[static crackling]
I have opened the gates of hell, and a demon!
[static crackling]
Do you know what the Titanic is?
Oh, no.
-I-- -Please! [exclaims]
Why it so loud? This is, like, not giving.
[Luke] Our third hotspot for investigation is the basement.
?
[Nikki] Whoa.
Oh, my God! I swear there's a fucking bug touching me.
?
Wait, are these desks?
[Nikki] Look how old this is.
So these were all in the classroom?
-[Matthew] Wow. -Feels colder,
and it's definitely giving...
It is giving spooky vibes.
[Luke] During the Gallows Hill era,
people were executed for all kinds of crime.
Some we wouldn't even consider crime today,
like witchcraft or talking back to a man.
In the history of Lunenburg Academy,
there's always been a tale of one thing:
-something is in the basement. -[Matthew] Mm-hmm.
That brings us to a man
-named Peter Mailman. -Really?
Yeah. Yeah, that is his, uh, real last name.
He married Mary. She had a daughter,
but the daughter did not like Peter.
Mary and Peter get into a huge fight,
and the daughter is like, "You need to leave him."
And she goes, "We're gonna go talk about it.
We're gonna go apple picking.
When we get back, everything will be fine."
That night, Peter came home with a basket of berries, alone.
Angelina asked where her mother was,
and Peter said she was helping a friend.
Angelina dug through her father's things,
finding her mother's dress and shoes in his bed.
[Luke] Lo and behold, they search the forest,
and in a hole of a tree is her with an axe in her back,
covered in blood, and he had killed her.
And they hung him right here
where this basement would've been.
We've actually encountered him multiple times
on the ground outside, on- and off-camera.
Students and staff, visitors and investigators
have all reported the unsettling feeling
of being touched, watched.
Many people believe this to be the spirit of Peter Mailman.
People claim to see his apparition
wandering around in his basement.
And he specifically only attacks women.
-Wow. -Lomar had a great idea
of putting me alone down there.
I was blindfolded and I was handcuffed,
and all of a sudden, I feel this burning sensation
on my lower calf,
and I had a handprint of someone grabbing right above my shoe.
Does any of that do anything for you?
What was going through my mind is that, like...
really would love to go apple picking.
It's almost that season.
[Matthew] So, we thought maybe we would do a little ritual
to see if we can call on Peter.
So we're gonna each light a candle as an offering to Peter.
By candle's light and shadows cast,
we call on spirits from the past.
Peter, show yourself.
[Luke] Okay. We have something for you to read.
Oh, my God.
Okay.
[all] "Magic forces black and white,
reaching out through space and light.
Be he far or be he near,
bring us the demon Peter Mailman here."
That is such a not-scary last name.
[laughing]
Peter, if you're here with us right now,
could you give us a knock or a noise
or something to indicate your presence?
[exclaims]
Sorry. Thought it was a bug. Thought it was a bug.
-Thought it was a bug. -[Matthew] Wait...
I think we gotta take it up a notch.
He only tends to show up for women.
These are handcuffs.
So we're gonna put this on your hands...
-[Matthew] Yeah. -...so it seems like
you can't go anywhere, so that hopefully he shows up.
I consent.
[Nikki grunts]
[Matthew] Okay, I'm gonna get the REM pod
so that Peter has a way to talk with us.
[Nikki] Okay.
[Matthew] A REM Pod is a tool
that will detect the presence of a ghost.
[Rem Pod beeping]
And this is the thing that all the ghosts like.
And when someone gets close to us...
-[REM Pod beeping] -Like that.
That's uncanny.
Is that you, Peter?
Are you in the circle with us right now?
-[REM Pod beeping] -[Luke] Ask if it's Peter.
Like, ask him something.
Hey, Peter. Do you hate women?
-[REM Pod beeps] -[Matthew] No, that's a yes.
-That's a yes? -[Matthew] Yeah.
Do you want us to leave Nikki in here alone?
[beeping]
Okay. Yeah, we--
Oh, I'm getting full goosebumps. Oh, my gosh.
[REM POD droning]
[exhales]
Peter, I still have my feet.
Full-body chill. Can you see these goosebumps?
Oh, my gosh. Holy.
-Peter, stop. -[droning stops]
-Okay. -[Matthew laughs]
-Oh, my God. -So well for you.
Do you want me and Matthew to step away from Nikki?
You just want me and Matthew to leave the room?
-[REM Pod beeping] -Oh!
[Luke] Peter, we're gonna leave you alone with Nikki.
Okay.
If you need help, scream.
Okay.
[Luke] Everybody out.
It's just-- just me and, uh...
Mr. Ghost.
Hey, Peter...
do you think I'm weird?
-Sorry, that's a-- -[REM Pod beeps]
Oh! Okay. So does my mom.
Um, hey, Peter?
[REM Pod droning]
Hey, Peter.
[droning stops]
Can we be friends?
Hey, Peter, were you executed?
[REM Pod beeping]
Oh.
Yeah, that's pretty brutal.
[REM Pod beeping]
While we were watching the monitor in the room next door,
our director and one of the producers
noticed something in the monitor:
a figure of a man in the window.
Although the cameras are in the room with Nikki,
our mic feeds are still recording.
-[Luke] Nikki? -Yeah?
[Luke] What would you do if I told you we're looking at
what looks like a human head
looking at you through the window?
Do you see, like, a shadow of a figure looking inside?
Not really. No.
Are you in the window?
[REM Pod droning]
[Matthew] Okay, Nikki, we're coming back.
[Luke] I need-- I need to go up to this window. I have to do it.
You actually can't see it in here.
Luke and Matthew suggest moving the REM Pod to the window
where this figure or this face was seen.
Hey, Peter, are you here?
[REM Pod droning]
-[Nikki] Hey, Peter... -[droning stops]
When we go outside, are you gonna try to kill Nikki?
[REM Pod beeping]
Do you think that you can, like, let me live?
[clears throat]
I think that he's saying, like, no, you're not living.
Huh.
Yeah, this-- this ghost definitely wants to kill me.
[eerie music]
That concludes our investigation into Lunenburg Academy.
And now it's time to decide if this location
-is truly haunted. -Or not.
[Matthew] In hotspot one, the classroom,
visitors report the spirit of a male teacher
watching over them and whispering to them to get out.
I asked some ludicrous questions and we left.
People often describe this spirit as an angry teacher,
and the first emotion that came up was anger.
-Felt angry! -Angry!
That was my smoking gun.
Based on the hauntings that people see a man
or they hear someone yelling,
we did not see a man. We did not hear yelling.
Did Matthew's Tamagotchi have a happy face? Sure!
In hotspot two, the music room,
guests and investigators report the spirit of Sophia,
a young girl known to sing or cry.
I loved this room.
-I think your radio-- -The portal box?
I loved it. Static sounds, whale noises.
I'm a big fan of the ocean. My uncle died on the Titanic.
Do I think I heard a little girl screaming or crying?
-No, that did not happen. -Mmm.
[static crackling]
All of the evidence here was too inconclusive
for me to directly relate to Sophia.
In hotspot three, the basement,
visitors, staff, and paranormal experts have all reported
the spirit of Peter Mailman creating an uneasy atmosphere
and even grabbing people.
-Okay, so there's a lot here. -There's a lot to unpack.
That basement, it was just evil down there.
And it wasn't until we put the cameras down
and everybody left Nikki alone and we checked the monitor
that we saw a man in the window.
Or what looked to be a man in the window.
?
This is one of the few maybe apparitions, shadows,
figures, humanoid shapes that I've ever seen
caught on camera and that we've ever captured on camera.
[producer] The million-dollar question is:
do you think Lunenburg Academy is haunted?
The Ghosting verdict...
Of our paranormal investigation...
Into Lunenburg Academy...
Is...
-[both] Haunted. -[beep]
Wait, what did you just say? You actually said it?
Listen, Peter Mailman was there, diva.
Okay, can you just say it one more time
for me and the people at home?
For $100, I can say anything you want, daddy.
Oh, my gosh.
I think Lunenburg Academy is...
haunted.
Here's the thing. The mission is,
did we prove the ghost was there based on the hauntings
as to why people believe this place is haunted?
We proved he was there.
I think there is definitely--
there's definitely some sort of energy
that is a little bit off.
[school bell ringing]
And there's the bell.
-Class is over for today. -Mmm.
But come back if you wanna learn more
about Canada's haunted history.
Yeah. See you in homeroom, ghosties.
[upbeat music]
