Original subtitles

Four hundred meters down,

tonight's ghostly and chilling exploration

is unlike anything we've ever done before.

Horses and mine carts and children, oh my.

Tonight we will march towards the Earth's core

as we investigate the infamous...

[both] Bell Island Mines.

[theme music]

[Luke] What are you running from?

[Matthew] Don't stop, Luke! It's a ghost!

[Luke] What do you mean?

Our story begins over 300 years ago when

a small island off the coast of Newfoundland was discovered.

It would go on to become one of the country's largest sources

of wealth and paranormal activity.

With its first recorded census in 1706,

the great Belle Isle was a small fishing island

made of 85 people.

As the community slowly grew, the people on the island

began to discover small pockets of iron.

[Luke] In 1892, a mining company would obtain

a mining license for the island and begin to excavate.

[Matthew] The working conditions of the mines were lethal,

as several deaths occurred.

[Luke] During all this chaos,

whispers of local paranormal stories began.

But the most popular story was that of the alleged ghost

said to haunt the now-empty mines.

As we head hundreds of meters underground into one of Canada's

most historically preserved mining operations,

we'll look for the ghosts of a child,

a miner, and a sailor,

all located in the core of the No. 2 Mines on...

[both] Bell Island, Newfoundland.

[upbeat electronic music]

[bleating]

?

My name is Brianna Follett, and I'm a local TV show host.

I would describe Bell Island as

a very, very cute community in the morning,

but at nighttime, when the moon is up and the sun is down,

the folklore and ghosts come to play.

Bell Island is known for the Newfoundland Fairies, the Hag,

and also the very, extremely haunted mine

that I'm in right now.

Over 106 people lost their lives down here,

so there is bound to be ghosts.

Bell Island Mines is definitely haunted.

[local] It honestly just terrifies me.

It's dark, it's damp, and it's wet.

Go check it out if you're looking to get scared.

If Luke and Matthew were to encounter any of the ghosts,

I would tell them to remain calm,

to buckle up their Birkenstocks.

From the surface, it doesn't look like much,

but when you're down in the mine, all eyes are on you.

?

Is this what they mean by island breeze?

Yeah, it's so tropical.

-[Luke] Wow. -I love it.

The scariest thing about tonight

is gonna be the state of my bangs.

You know, there's something a little funny about this place.

Really? Besides the wind, what?

Don't you mean who?

?

Hey. Um...

you look incredible. [laughs]

I was not expecting you. Come on in.

Wow, have you been working out?

Hi, I'm Veronika Slowikowska.

You might know me as a comedian, content creator, or actress.

[camera shutter clicking]

I'm just kind of, um, coming to terms with...

that I have to do this. [giggles]

[crew laughing]

Luke and Matthew asked me

to come to go ghost hunting with them

because they know I'm the most scared person that they know.

They find joy in my pain. [chuckles]

-That's kind of f-- -[beep]

I know nothing about what's gonna happen tonight.

My relationship with the paranormal is,

I believe, but if I think about it too hard, I will have, like,

an existential panic attack kind of thing.

I believe it, but don't show me it.

I'm terrified of ghosts.

[eerie music]

-Are your eyes open? -Now they're op--

-Yeah, they're open. -Okay, look.

[ominous music]

Huh?

?

-What the heck? -I know.

Wait. Do you know where you are?

-Yeah. -Um, a mine. No.

This is the most haunted island in all of Newfoundland.

[Matthew] People think that the source of, like,

all of the evil and paranormal on the island

may originate from this actual mine.

You were the only person

we could think to bring to this place.

No. I don't like it.

-[Matthew laughs] -Don't like it.

What don't you like? What don't you like?

I'm going home. We're having pizza.

[Matthew] First, we have to pick our helmets.

[Veronika] Well, 'cause I'm gonna be like this.

[Matthew] I think you can adjust it on the back.

-No, this is... -[both laughing]

I'm shak-- Like, I'm like...

-Look. -[Luke laughs] Look at them.

-[Luke] Okay, so-- -[Veronika] I can't.

We're gonna go in the mines,

and you're gonna lead us there.

-[Matthew] Yeah. -[Luke] Go.

[Veronika] Don't do this to me.

[Matthew] Okay, Veronika.

-After you. -[Veronika] No!

-Can we hold hands? -[both] No, no.

What is wrong with you?

-[both laughing] -Guys...

Nope!

No.

[Luke laughing]

Huh. Really? Ten years of friendship.

Okay. I'm gonna remember this.

This is the tunnel to go into the mine.

Oh, okay, so this isn't even the mine.

Yeah, no. So we're gonna go, like,

a hundred million feet underground.

-So I'm not gonna have service? -[Luke] Yeah.

[Matthew] Yeah, you can't post anything from this mine.

-Okay. No worries. -No. You can't call for help.

Not a worry.

Hundreds of people died down here.

-Yeah. -I'm gonna throw up.

Thirty seconds ago, I found out we're doing this.

Now we're-- now we're here.

[Luke] Our first hotspot for investigation

is the entrance of the mine.

[Veronika] Oh, my goodness. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

Hey, does this place have an elevator?

-[chuckles] I love you guys. -[Matthew] Oh, my God.

[Luke] The way that she's running.

[Matthew] Yeah, you were scared, like,

-a couple of minutes ago. -We got places to be.

-I don't like it. -[Luke giggles]

I'm scared again.

One of the crazy things about this mine in particular is that

it actually employed children as young as nine years old.

[Luke] Children at the mines worked ten-hour shifts

six days a week.

The conditions were horrendous and unsafe,

resulting in several deaths of these children.

So here's the fun thing about this little section

that we're standing in.

Because there's a bunch of kids who worked in here,

kids were running up and down, grabbing water.

They died right there.

One such story goes that as a child miner was headed back

into the mine from the entrance,

a mine cart came crashing down, killing them.

So the ramp would've gone to where we came from,

and the mine carts would, I guess,

-come up and then down here. -Okay.

Many visitors have reported the spirit of a child miner

said to haunt these tunnels,

claiming they hear the sound of a child's laughter

or see a shadow running across the space

as if a child was playing a game.

-This... -No.

[gasps, laughs]

[Matthew] An EMF detector is a tool

used to measure the presence of a ghost.

Call out to the spirits. Ask them to come near you.

How about you do it and I watch?

The goal is to find where

the kid we're trying to talk to died.

-I'm not doing this. -[Luke] Yes, you are.

-No, I'm not. I'm literally not. -[Luke] Yes.

-We'll be right beside you. -You're doing it.

-We can start. -I'll stand beside you.

-How's that? -Okay.

I'm realizing we're just jumping in.

Is there anyone here in the Bell--

And it's okay if you don't wanna show yours--

-It did just bleep a little bit. -No, it didn't.

It did-- it did a little bit.

If you don't wanna show yourself, it's okay.

-I believe you're here. -[Matthew gasps]

-It just spiked. -No, it didn't.

-It did. -You're lying.

The grip of her hand into my thigh...

-You're actually lying. -I'm not lying.

Keep going, keep going.

I believe you're here.

Just please don't show me that.

Luke doesn't believe that there's anyone in this mine.

Ghost kid, show us where you died.

On this. Light up if we found where you died.

Yeah, when we get close to where you died, approach the remote.

[all gasping]

Okay, those were some big spikes.

-Yeah, that was. -Those were some red spikes.

-That was red. -It keeps going off. Okay.

-Veronika, take this. -No.

-Yeah. Veronika? -Nope.

[Matthew] A Flux Prism is a motion detector for ghosts.

[Veronika] Where are these from? You know, these toys.

-From the Internet. Yeah. -The Internet? Right, which--

everyone knows that's a really good place

to get things that work.

[Matthew] It's just calibrating.

-[Prism beeps] -[gasps]

That does mean something went by it.

-Okay, thank you. -Thank you.

Thank you to whoever just went by.

-[Luke] Okay. Veronika? -[Veronika] Yeah.

Talk to the ghost.

Hi. Um...

[Prism beeps]

He's saying hi back. Oh, my God.

-I have to tell you-- -That just happened.

I am so sorry for what has happened to you.

Are we chatting with one of the child miners

that worked down here?

If yes, can you go by our device to let us know?

-[Prism beeps] -[all gasping]

Wow. Wow.

Do you want Veronika to stay by herself?

-[Matthew] Wait! -No! Please say no.

Veronika, you were picking up on the name--

[Prism beeps]

-Okay, Veronika, I'm sorry-- -[Veronika] No!

We do have a little thing on this show

where we have to follow what the ghosts say.

-No, I'm not kidding. -We have to.

I'm not kidding. I'm not kidding.

-I'm not kidding. -[Luke] No, no--

[Matthew] Our next hotspot for investigation is the stables.

[Luke] This is a lot bigger than I thought this was gonna be.

-[Veronika] Hello! -[voice echoing]

[Luke] It's a barrel! It's a barrel.

[Veronika] God!

[Matthew] Okay, talk to me, Veronika.

What are you feeling? What are you picking up?

I'm feeling absolutely very scared in the moment.

But I feel the power of friendship and love,

and I feel like my energy is-- my white light shining through.

[Matthew] In the 1920s, the method used at the time

meant that the miners would send the excavated iron ore

to the surface outside through open shafts

by horse-drawn carts.

[Luke shrieks] What the fuck is this?

-[Matthew] Wait, no-- -[Luke] What is this?

[Matthew] This looks like where they would keep all the horses.

-[Luke] Oh, it's the stables. -[Matthew] Yeah.

Yeah. You'd put the feed in this part.

That's something I wish I was right now.

-[Luke] A horse? -Or stable?

-Stable. -[all laughing]

I love you guys.

[laughing]

While we're here in this moment-- And you know what,

-we're looking for the man. -[Veronika] We're dating.

Hmm. I feel like we're, like, not alone,

but, like, in an-- in an okay way.

[Luke] During the 1940s, when-- that was the last decade

where this was in operation-- it was packed with men.

-Packed, packed, packed. -Okay.

-Sweaty... -Great.

...hot and disgusting. Horse shit, horses everywhere.

[Matthew] It's slippery. It's dark. It's smelly.

-Do you know what I mean? -Yes.

-You're painting the picture. -Yep.

And I'm smelling that picture.

One of the most famous deaths that ever happened in here,

the horse was up on the top of the slope

carrying that cart of ore up with a horse.

-Right. -The miner's working.

But, the cable snapped attached to the horse,

sending the cart high speed

right back down that track, when...

It hit him and sliced him directly in half.

-'Kay. -And he died.

Visitors and staff report hearing the sound

of unexplained clanking,

feeling whooshes of air moving past,

and seeing flashes of light.

All of these reports lead people to believe

this is the spirit of the miner

forever reliving the last moments before his death.

We have a way to communicate with this ghost.

A flashlight turns on and off

when a ghost tries to communicate.

Isn't that just, like, making it do that thing

-that it goes on and off? -[Matthew] Well--

A flashlight that is half unscrewed?

[scoffs]

[wheezing]

[scoffing]

[coughs]

You're exactly right to think that way,

and that's what all the skeptics say.

[Veronika] 'Cause it's, like, right in the middle of--

Very valid. It's when it matches up

with the questions that we ask.

That's when it goes a little-- Nope.

That's when it gets a little too hard to explain.

My next boyfriend. Where's boyfriend number two?

-[all laughing] -Love ya.

Excuse me, I'm so sorry to bother you, and

I'm very sorry for everything that's happened to you.

Are you here?

[Matthew gasps]

I understand that.

And...

-Thank you. Thank you. -Thank you.

Are you angry that you died trying to clock out of work?

-'Cause, personally-- -'Cause, honestly, I get that.

-Okay. -Okay.

[Luke] Are you the man who was cut in half?

Would he have known that? Are you conscious when you're dying?

You know what? I'm not sure. That's a fair question.

If the last thing you remembered was a horse freaking out

and a cart going straight at you, bitch...

-Yeah. -...go off.

[Matthew gasps]

-Okay. That is a yes. -Third time's the charm.

Can you see us right now?

[eerie music]

[Luke] Our third hotspot for investigation

is the mine waters.

-Okay, be careful. -Yeah.

-Be careful, Veronika. -I am.

Why does this look like a weird, like,

Venice Beach underground bar?

I wanna go to the bars you go to.

[ominous music]

Whoa. There's like, actually a lake in here.

[Luke] Here's the skinny.

During World War II, this was the place to be.

The resources for the war were sourced...

-No, tell me more. -Here.

During the Second World War,

the Bell Island Mines were a resource hub for iron ore that

would be used to create weapons for the Canadian Allied forces.

They would have the cargo ships come here.

-The cargo ship docks up. -Yeah.

They get off to come pick up some stuff.

-[Veronika] All right. -Horrible timing.

German boat pulls up, bombs the boat.

Yeah. It's a German U-boat, so it's under the water.

Like, they can't even see it.

The explosion not only destroyed the docked cargo ship,

but killed many of the naval sailors aboard.

-There was one sailor... -[Matthew] Yeah.

[Luke] ...unlike the rest.

Seventeen-year-old Billy Swain.

Paranormal investigators report the spirit of a soldier

said to be Billy Swain lurking around these waters.

Common claims include unexplained cold spots,

the sensation of being touched,

and some have even seen Billy's apparition.

When people see him,

it's normally just an apparition of himself.

Like, taller young man who's seen moping around.

Like he's trying to leave. He just wants to leave.

So he didn't die here, but he's haunting here?

-Hello? -[echoing]

-Is there anybody out there? -[echoing]

This is really nuts.

Oh, my God.

-This side is fucked. -Whoa!

[Luke] This does not feel stable.

-[Matthew] Wow. -[Veronika] Do you hear that?

-[distant splash] -[Luke gasps]

[baby voice] I think it's--

I think it's time to go to home now.

Billy Swain.

Are you here?

What do you feel now?

I don't feel a bad energy.

I think it's because he's a teenager, maybe?

I'm feeling a fun energy.

Have you ever seen those videos of, like,

Marilyn Monroe performing for the troops?

-Yeah, like, entertaining. -You're a professional comedian.

-[Matthew] Yeah. -[Veronika] Okay.

So you're gonna do a little show

to see if Billy will come out.

I do improv, I do sketch.

I don't really do standup.

How are we doing tonight?

I can't hear you!

-[quietly] Tough crowd. -[both laughing]

So, uh, I'm Canadian.

My mom's a moose, my dad's a beaver.

Can you do, like, a ghost joke? Like, a ghost bit?

Listen, you're asking me to write something

that would usually take 20 years.

Oh, God, I don't even know how to say that.

We're gonna find out if they thought it was funny.

-[Veronika] Okay. -And Matthew is gonna help us.

[Veronika] Oh, no. What is this?

[Matthew] A REM Pod is a tool

that will detect the presence of a ghost.

Um, hey.

I've never done standup in front of a ghost before,

and let me tell you, it's pretty scary.

But not as scary as my mother-in-law.

[REM Pod beeping]

That's a laugh.

-That's a laugh. -That's a laugh.

"Ha-ha-ha." Hi.

I'll be here all week. Just kidding, I won't.

Actually leaving in about five minutes, hopefully.

If they'll let me go.

-[REM Pod beeping] -Oh.

Okay.

[Luke] It does not want you to leave.

[Matthew] It doesn't want you to leave.

This is a lot of energy right here, and I'm feeling it.

Okay, give me this.

-Okay, thanks. -We're done with this.

Okay, I'm gonna extend the antenna.

Let's take a step back.

[beeping continues]

[Matthew] Okay.

-[Luke] Oh, my God. -[Veronika] Uh-oh.

-Give me a hand. -Okay, now try.

Are we speaking with Billy Swain?

Did you die on a boat?

I swore I just heard voices coming from over there.

[Luke] Are you--

I heard-- Did you hear that?

-[Matthew] Yeah. -The, like... [vocalizing]

I'm hearing-- I fully heard something over there.

-Veronika's shaking. -No, I'm just cold.

But I don't think it makes sense.

We heard noises earlier coming from that cavern to my left.

Were those noises coming from you?

We have a very strong flashlight.

[beeping]

-[Veronika] Not looking. -We're all staying still, right?

-[Luke] I'm not moving. -Okay, I'm gonna shine it.

[Luke gasps] Oh, my God!

-[Veronika] What? -It just keeps going.

[Luke] Can we see you with the light?

Can Matthew see you right now?

-[Veronika] No. -Give me this.

Okay.

-[REM Pod beeping] -[Luke] Is there something

in the water we should be afraid of?

Do you want to hurt anybody here in this cave tonight?

-[REM Pod beeping] -Oh, my God.

I don't like that.

[spooky music]

That concludes our investigation into the Bell Island Mines.

And now it's time to decide if this location is truly haunted.

Or not.

[Matthew] In hotspot one, the entrance,

the spirit of a child miner is said to be reported by visitors

with claims of laughter and unexplained shadows moving.

The device we were using, the Flux,

works with motion moving on either side,

and it did detect a presence.

-Hi. Um... -[Flux beeps]

Therefore, the claims of the kids moving

in this spot were proven true.

The claims are you see a shadow figure running around

-said to be a child playing. -Mm-hmm.

I did not see no shadow running around.

But, when Veronika was asking our Flux,

"Are you here? Are you the child miner?"

We got, like, a green response right away.

[Luke] In hotspot two, the stables,

the spirit of a miner is said

to create whooshes and flashing lights.

Okay, so here's what I'm gonna do for you.

-[Matthew] Yeah. -I will say...

-That there was a ghost there. -No.

I will throw you the bone that many people saw some sort of

-weird, ominous light... -Yeah.

...coming and going as it pleased.

Myself, our director, and our first AD--

there may even be more people-- all saw these floating lights.

Unfortunately, we didn't catch it on camera,

but we did experience this anomaly. So that happened.

But the responses from the flashlights

were also very clear.

Like, we were speaking with something right away.

[Veronika] Are you here?

[gasping]

[Matthew] In hotspot three, the mine waters,

the spirit of Billy Swain

is reportedly lurking around these waters

with claims of cold spots, sensations of being touched,

and even the apparition of Billy being spotted.

It was cold because of the fact that

we were literally hundreds of meters underground.

It was definitely damp and chilly, I will give you that.

The whole thing was freezing. It was freezing down there.

Yeah, but if there's, like, a random cold spot

that sticks out particular to

-everything around them-- -No, the whole thing was cold.

-Veronika's shaking. -No, I'm just cold.

And do I believe-- because I think I enjoy

-the idea of this... -Yeah.

...the REM pod worked

because the ghosts were laughing at Veronika's joke.

Yeah, she's hilarious.

"My mom's a beaver and my dad's a moose."

-I love it. -Gold.

[producer] The million dollar question:

do you think the Bell Island Mines are haunted?

The Ghosting verdict...

Of our paranormal investigation...

-Into the Bell Island Mines... -Is...

?

-Not haunted. -Haunted.

I'm gonna say it has to be haunted.

Not haunted, but, like, I could entertain

-the spook factor. -Okay.

I believe the Bell Island Mines...

are haunted.

The mine was mining. It was fun.

It was definitely a great time.

-And definitely haunted. -We shared a few laughs,

but as far as paranormal activity...

-No. -It was a--

We spoke to three ghosts,

and I did standup for a ghost.

Well, we certainly didn't find love on this island,

but we did find a few laughs.

Mmm. And that's what really counts.

Hold your friends close,

'cause you never know when a mine cart is coming.
