As we check in to tonight's chilling tale,
we will venture further than we ever have before.
Though vacant for nearly 100 years,
the heart of the gold rush couldn't be more occupied
as we investigate one of the most haunted hotels
in the country:
[both] Caribou Hotel.
[theme music]
[Luke] What are you running from?
[Matthew] Don't stop! Luke, it's a ghost!
[Luke] What do you mean?
The Klondike Gold Rush is one of the most famous events
in Canadian history, but its chilling origin
has resulted in tales all over the north,
especially in a hotel that's said to still suffer
at the hands of its own history.
In 1896, George Carmack, Dawson Charlie, and Skookum Jim
discovered gold in the Yukon.
Imagine, like, discovering gold.
I know. Like, at that point, like...
-Well, okay, hold on-- -Was it just, like,
sitting on the surface? That's what I wanna know.
Like, how do you just discover a gold deposit?
-It must've been in the water. -I think I meant it in the--
I realize that-- What I meant was, like,
discovering gold and being like, "What is this?"
-Oh, for the very first-- -But they obviously discovered
gold and knew what it was and, like, "Now we're rich."
-Hundred. -'Cause at one point,
somebody was like, "Look at this shiny-ass rock."
A businessman owned a hotel in Bennett, BC.
When he saw the amount of men heading up towards the mines
with nowhere to stay, he decided to literally lift his hotel
off the ground and sail it up to the Yukon.
However, in 1908, one of the original owners
of the hotel mysteriously passed away.
The hotel was quickly taken over by the Gideons,
running the hotel until 1933,
when they both passed away within its walls.
As we check in to this haunted hotel,
we'll look for the ghosts of the original owner,
Edwin Gideon, Bessie Gideon,
and their pet parrot, Polly.
All said to remain within the historic Caribou Hotel in...
[both] ...Carcross, Yukon.
[upbeat music]
My name is Anne Morgan, and I'm related to the Caribou Hotel
because my partner and I purchased it in 2006.
The history of the Caribou Hotel is really key to Yukon history.
So many people passed through on their way to the gold rush,
people that died along the Chilkoot Trail.
People have seen things here that are strange.
I've heard it's the most haunted place in the Yukon.
So many spirits inside the hotel.
The Caribou Hotel is one of the most
haunted buildings in the Yukon.
Sometimes we hear hammering in here,
experiences with some orbs.
It's just odd.
Despite checking in centuries ago,
we still have guests that don't want to leave.
?
[Luke] So here's my question for you.
-Yeah? -Why is it still sunny?
Well, Luke, it's astronomical twilight.
-They filmed Twilight here? -No. You know, actually,
I've heard there's a ghost of a talking parrot in here.
Great. Well, good thing we brought someone
who can speak to birds.
-Wait, we did? -Yeah, you.
[Matthew gasps]
[whistling]
?
You checking in?
Hi, my name is Joel Oulette,
and you may know me from Trickster.
[camera shutter clicking]
[laughs] Thanks for the warm-ups.
I don't really know what to expect tonight.
Obviously, some paranormal activity.
I definitely believe in the paranormal.
I think it's a real thing.
I think I would get along with ghosts.
I just don't know who it's gonna be,
and I don't know how many ghosts are gonna be
partying with us tonight, and I don't know what's gonna happen.
I think Luke and Matthew asked me to come
because they wanna scare the shit out of me.
I do get scared easy. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah.
I've slept-- I slept with a nightlight for--
for a decent amount-- Um...
Yeah.
[eerie music]
[door creaking]
?
[screams] Oh, my God!
-[Joel exhales] -See, I'm used to that now.
[Joel] Luke scares the shit out of me.
Definitely the senses are at a ten.
[Luke] Here's the thing. This is the first time
we're somewhere where there's light,
and the vibe is just so, like, gorgeous, gorgeous.
Like, look at that.
So there's nothing to fear but fear itself.
Okay. [exhales]
We are in the Caribou Hotel.
It's one of the most haunted places in the country,
and hands-down the most haunted place in the Yukon.
Anyone coming through the Klondike Gold Rush
-had to stay here. -[Joel] Okay.
So this was, like, the hot place to come hang.
-[Matthew] Exactly. -But with all of that
came so much drama.
I just wonder how-- like, how many murders were in here.
-I just get the sense that-- -We'll get into that.
-Mmm. -There's a lot of beards,
-too, probably. -Beards?
-Yeah, like, back in the day. -Facial hair?
Yeah. Like, there were probably, like, a lot of,
like, you know, musky kind of guys.
I feel like a lot of them are named Jack.
-[Luke] Really? -Yeah.
-Interesting -Jack the miner.
I don't know. I feel like his name is Jack.
[Luke] Our first hotspot for investigation is the basement.
[creepy music]
-[thud] -Ow!
-[Matthew] Oh, how's your head? -Haven't had any complaints yet.
?
I feel like something's watching us.
-[Matthew] Where are you going? -[Luke chuckles]
[Luke] I've discovered a room.
[Joel] This is, like, a kill room or something.
-That's the vibes I get in here. -So we're about to
tell you what's going down. So because,
as we had mentioned upstairs, this was the gold rush area,
this was where everybody met, people were like,
"We want money, and we will do anything we can to get money,
'cause that's why we came up here, to be rich."
And although no one knows what happened,
the body of the original owner was found at that bridge
where the train is, across the street in the water.
They don't know if he fell off the bridge and died,
or if someone killed-- like, intentionally pushed him off
to kill him to try to get his estate.
Following their death, the owner's wife put a couple
in charge of managing the hotel.
But in 1909, the hotel would burn down.
The managing couple moved quickly to rebuild the hotel,
as at this time, the Caribou was a massive success.
And in 1910, the hotel reopened.
The basement is the only original part
of the first hotel.
So the energy from back then is here right now.
-Exactly. -And when they were
redoing these floorboards, all of the construction workers
kept seeing a man down here that wasn't them.
-Ahh... -Yeah.
And when they were putting the boards,
one of the workers was hearing someone downstairs,
but everybody was leaving for the night,
and when they looked through one of the slits of the boards
looking down, they saw the man looking up.
-Wow. -And it's said to be
the original owner, as this was the last place
-he was ever alive. -Exactly.
Staff report that the spirit of the original owner
is said to haunt the basement of the Caribou Hotel.
Some have even heard the unexplainable sound
of hammering throughout the hotel.
We're gonna try and communicate with the spirit
of the original owner of the Caribou Hotel.
-[laughs] -Yeah. Was it an accident,
-was it a murder? -What do you mean?
How are we gonna talk to him?
[Matthew] A flashlight turns on and off
when a ghost tries to communicate.
Let's see if someone will show up.
Okay.
[Luke] If you want a million dollars, turn on.
[Joel] He's shy.
Can you turn on? Do you work?
You're asking rapid-fire questions.
How much wood could a woodchuck chuck--
[Matthew] You have to ask yes or no questions.
-I don't think this works. -Okay, well, of course you--
[exclaiming]
Oh, shit.
Can we talk to the man
who was seen through the floorboards?
[tense music]
[dramatic tone]
Oh...
[nervous chuckle]
[Matthew] Okay, thank you. Thank you.
May you please turn that light off?
-Okay. -He's here.
Are you the original owner of the Caribou Hotel?
Did you ever kill anyone?
[Matthew gasps]
[eerie music]
Is someone going to die?
[dramatic tone]
-[chuckling] -We're all gonna die, right?
-Someday. -Oh, wow. Well, yeah,
that's a very poetic interpretation of that answer.
Some are gonna die sooner than others, I guess.
If it's gonna be Joel, turn off.
No, no, no, no! Is it gonna be Luke?
-[laughing] -I'm so sorry.
Our second hotspot for investigation is the saloon.
?
-What is that? -Taxidermied squirrel!
I just feel like back in the day that shit was crazy here.
Following the death of one of the owners,
Edwin and Bessie Gideon took over as management
for the bustling hotel.
[Luke] Edwin made sure to keep the saloon running
as smooth as possible.
[Matthew] When the hotel burnt down,
Edwin wasted no time rebuilding.
With the help of a business partner, the hotel reopened.
Mr. Gideon died in this very hotel.
He was the man who looked over this bar
when he was in charge of this hotel.
One of the most famous stories of the paranormal haunting here
is a young woman was closing up the bar late at night,
and a patron came in.
She's all like, "Sorry, we're closed for the night.
You can't come in." And this man wasn't taking no for an answer.
Then the TV turned itself on, only with static playing.
The gentleman was a little apprehensive,
still insisting on getting a drink.
Then the TV turned on again.
So it's like energetic frequencies.
Exactly.
And this freaked him right out to the point where he left,
and nobody could explain why this TV turned on.
But this is the thing, is she thinks it's Mr. Gideon
who was trying to make sure that no one robbed his bar.
So he's like the bouncer?
That would suck to be a ghost and that's the only way you can,
kick someone out is, like, turning a TV off and on,
-you know? -Well, it works.
Staff believe the spirit of Edwin Gideon
haunts this saloon, supposedly as a way to protect his space.
Clearly there was an electromagnetic disturbance
in the space, and I have a tool--
-TV? -I wish I had a TV.
But I have a tool that's going to enhance
the electromagnetic energy in this space.
An electricity generator produces static electricity.
Matthew, what is this?
What in-- what in the nonsense is this thing?
This is an electromagnetic generator.
Matthew brings out this Bill Nye hamster wheel-Tesla collab.
[Matthew] Spirits draw off of electromagnetic energy,
and this is just omitting a ton of electric energy into the air.
It's like an open conductor.
Is this gonna shock? Like, what does this do?
-It will, yeah. Hold it. -What do you mean?
-[Matthew] Crank faster. -[Luke yelps]
-Oh! -What is--
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
-Come on, Mr. Gideon. -[Matthew] Exactly.
We're just charging the air.
[Luke] How is it doing that?
-Friction. -[Luke] Okay.
[Matthew] Stick your finger in there.
-No! -[Matthew] I will.
[zap]
It just feels like a little shock. Do it.
Yes, obviously it feels like a shock, it's electricity.
Okay. Now let's use the actual tool to talk to Mr. Gideon.
An SLS cam is a tool used to catch
the apparition of a ghost on camera.
[Joel] I've seen this before.
I've seen this on, like, YouTube videos and stuff,
this connect kind of thingy that captures little stickmen.
Let's walk around the bar.
Let's see if we've got any old miners here with us.
-[Joel] Yeah, true. -[Matthew] Or maybe Mr. Gideon.
[Joel] Okay, Edwin.
-Where are you? -[Matthew exclaims]
[Matthew] Did you see that? Where the heck was that?
[Luke] I saw that.
[Joel] Edwin-- Oh!
-Oh... -Did you see that for a sec?
-Behind the bar? -[Joel] Yeah. Yeah.
[Luke] Wait, I literally actually saw that.
Edwin?
-Mr. Gideon? -[Luke screams]
Why am I screaming? Like, I'm not-- I'm not scared.
No, I like it. Keep going. It's good.
Gideon.
Gideon, where are you?
[Matthew] Okay, that was Luke. Sorry.
[Joel] Mr. Gideon. Edwin.
Here, boy.
"Here, boy." I love the dog calling.
[Joel laughing]
Okay, wait, I'm gonna pretend to break in.
-See if it works. -[Matthew] Okay.
I'm gonna be working my shift.
-Ready? -[Matthew] Yeah.
-[Luke] Hey! -I'm sorry, sir.
-We're closed. -I need to drink.
I understand, but we've been cashed out.
[Luke] Likely story.
You're getting closer and closer.
You're making me feel really uncomfortable right now.
What are you or anyone else gonna do to stop me?
If only I had a ghost of the previous owner. [chuckles]
-[Joel] Edwin. -Is there anything, Joel?
-[Joel] No. -Okay.
You have to actually attack me, then.
-[Luke] Okay. -Okay.
-[Luke] Okay, ready? -[Matthew] Yeah.
There's no-- there's nothing right now?
There's just, like-- Yeah, the green stuff on you.
-[both] Okay. -[smack]
-[Matthew grunts] Ow! -[Joel] Oh, shit.
-Mr. Gideon? -Anything?
-Anything? -[Matthew] Edwin?
-[Joel] I don't-- -Okay, let's try the other way.
Okay.
-[smack] -Ow!
[Joel laughing]
Really? It's not working?
Our third hotspot for investigation
is the primary suite.
[eerie music]
[Joel] What the heck.
?
[Luke] Oh, my God.
I literally thought that was real.
[Joel] Hey, buddy.
"Polly, 125 years."
This room's definitely creepy, eh?
-Yeah? -Definitely, yeah.
Talk to us. What are you feeling?
Definitely feel something more.
[Luke] This was Mr. and Mrs. Gideon's suite.
October 27th, 1928, Mr. Gideon died in this room.
And five years later, to the day,
the exact day, in this same room,
Mrs. Gideon died.
Why is that kinda romantic, kinda?
You have a different idea of romance.
[Luke] Bessie Gideon's main focus of the hotel
was said to be the well-being of her guests.
Bessie would oversee all the rooms,
making sure they were perfectly cleaned for check-in,
following up with each guest
to ensure they had the best possible stay.
But you don't find that weird, that they died
in the same room on the same day?
That's-- I don't know.
That's-- that's creepy, for sure.
When one of the many guests checked out,
they left their pet parrot behind.
Bessie adopted the parrot named Polly,
who became attached to Bessie.
And you were on Trickster talking to the little bird.
-[Matthew] Mm-hmm. -[Luke] So talk to the bird.
-[Joel] Talk to the bird? -[Matthew] Yeah.
[caws, giggles]
What up, Polly?
The Caribou Hotel was recognized
as part of the Haunted Canada series of postage stamps,
specifically around the sightings of Mrs. Gideon.
Paranormal investigators believe this to be
the apparition of Bessie Gideon and Polly the parrot.
So she just, like, looks out of this window...
But the other thing that's crazy is from this room,
-you can see the bridge... -Yeah.
...where the other guy was dead.
-True. -Literally. Okay, okay, okay.
I'm gonna get a tool that's gonna help us communicate with
both Mrs. Gideon and Polly the parrot.
The Ovilus 5 lets spirits communicate
using phonetic sounds and words.
Should we bring in apple boxes?
[Joel] So Miss Gideon dies.
She wasn't in any of the sus stuff, right?
[Matthew] I mean, not that we know.
[Joel] What if, like, Mr. and Mrs. Gideon
pushed that guy into the lake, or the river,
and then took the hotel for themselves?
[eerie music]
Okay, word bank is here.
I think you have to introduce yourself to the ghost, maybe.
Hello? Uh, Mrs. Gideon? Or other ghosts. I'm Joel.
[Ovilus 5]
-"Help." -"Help."
"Help."
-[Ovilus 5] -[Luke] "Across."
-Across... -The street.
[Ovilus 5]
-[all gasping] -It just got good.
It's...
-[Matthew] It's "homicide." -[Joel] Whoa.
-[laughing] -What?
What homicide? Was Mrs. Gideon murdered?
[Ovilus 5]
Chloride is a type of poison, isn't it?
[Ovilus 5]
-"Surprise"! -"Surprise"!
"Homicide," "surprise,"
-"chloride." -"Chloride"!
-Remember? -And you talked about the man
with the beard, and you were like, "His name would be Jack."
I feel like a lot of 'em are named Jack.
-You literally said that. -[Luke screams]
[imitates explosion]
[crew member] Hello. Sorry.
Your battery. I need to plug your battery.
The battery's draining. Wha--
Spirits here. This is--
-[all] "Cellar"? -[Matthew] The basement!
We're talking to the owner who was in the basement!
[Joel] No!
[chuckling]
-Joel, I think you were right. -[Joel] Did I figure it out?
-They killed him. -Did I crack the code?
[Ovilus 5]
"Blaze." The fire.
The fire!
[Joel] You're going through it.
Guys, this is the original owner.
-[Matthew] Yeah. -Mrs. Gideon and Mr. Gideon
-burnt the fucking place down. -[Joel] I don't like this.
-[Matthew] Yes. -They drugged and killed him,
then burnt the place down to get rid of any evidence
that it was a murder, and then rebuilt it and made millions,
and the only fuckin' person who knows the truth
was this stupid fucking bird.
For legal reasons, we are not police detectives,
and everything we say on the show is purely based in a parody
and not to be taken seriously.
[eerie music]
That concludes our investigation into the Caribou Hotel.
And now it's time to decide if this location is truly haunted.
Or not.
[Matthew] In hotspot one, the basement,
staff have reported seeing the apparition
of one of the original owners, while others have claimed
hearing the sound of construction.
We did not encounter any of the paranormal allegations
at all said to have happened from the basement.
In order to manipulate one of those flashlights,
spirit or energy has to tap on the flashlight.
[all exclaiming]
There are no reports of a Morse code ghost
tip-tapping away down there.
We had that flashlight.
The responses were pretty timely.
-Diva, let's play a game. Ready? -Yeah.
Did you hear the sound of construction, yes or no?
-Um... -Yes or no?
-No comment. -[bell dinging]
[Luke] In hotspot two, the saloon,
the spirit of Edwin Gideon is reported by staff
to interfere with electromagnetic frequencies.
-Based on the hauntings... -[Matthew] Yeah.
...do I think anyone interfered with
the electromagnetic frequencies?
No.
Do I think we served and put on a performance?
Yes.
The only thing that was electric
in that saloon was our chemistry.
-[smack] -[Matthew grunts]
It felt like you were getting a lot out there.
Acting is about committing to the moment, making bold choices.
Mistakes, but in the right way.
Acting is being comfortable with being uncomfortable.
Yes! Acting is 90% reacting.
Listening and responding.
And we listened for Edwin Gideon, and...
I have to say,
we didn't hear much.
In hotspot three, the primary suite,
paranormal experts, staff, and visitors report seeing
the apparition of Bessie Gideon and Polly the parrot.
-I know the goal of the room... -Yeah.
...was to talk about the lady and the bird.
Ovilus said "Jack."
-[Ovilus 5] Jack. -You literally said that.
[Luke screams]
Okay, so here's the gag.
There was a man named Jack
who was the Gideons' business partner, allegedly.
There is a theory that one of the original owners
was actually killed so that the Gideons
could take over the hotel, allegedly.
The circumstances surrounding what Joel said
was really bizarre.
What if, like, Mr. and Mrs. Gideon
pushed that guy into the lake
and took the hotel for themselves?
As soon as he walked in the building,
he was like, "Jack the murderer."
Like, all of these things just came to him.
Yeah. That's not normal.
Some might even say that's paranormal.
[producer] The million dollar question is,
do you think the Caribou Hotel is haunted?
The Ghosting verdict...
Of our paranormal investigation...
Into the Caribou Hotel...
Is...
-Haunted! -I don't like-- Okay.
Just say it. Pull it out.
Let me just pull it out really slowly. "Haunted."
I 100% believe the Caribou Hotel's haunted.
No, I don't think it's haunted.
But I do think that something weird happened there
that I don't know if it can be explained...
in a logical way.
It's haunted. It's haunted.
You go there, you're gonna feel something.
[eerie music]
We hope you enjoyed your stay.
Be sure to check out.
Now return your keys. We reuse those things.
Or do you not care about the environment?
Yeah, are you trying to kill the planet?
Have a safe flight!
