Two shots and one barrel later

Our story takes us to the centre of love and war,

The olde angel inn.

[tense music playing]

In 1789, the olde angel inn was built

On the soon-to-be tumultuous battlegrounds

Of the war of 1812.

At the time, the olde angel inn was a coach house

Which is like a resting place

And watering hole for travellers.

Like british soldier captain colin swayze

Who grew fond of more than just the ale.

The barmaid in charge caught swayze's eye.

But this couple's love came at the ultimate cost.

Together forever in death,

Captain swayze and the barmaid are said to still remain

Where they first met.

However, these lovers aren't alone,

As the spirit of the american soldier who killed them

Is rumoured to tread the boards above their heads.

We're putting the octopus right before the horse

As we look for the barmaid,

The american soldier

And captain colin swayze.

Two men, one woman and a barrel

Make the olde angel inn one of canada's most horrific tales

In one of the country's most haunted towns...

[both] ...Niagara-on-the-lake, ontario.

[upbeat music playing]

My name is diana farr.

I am the front desk receptionist

Here at the olde angel inn.

The olde angel inn has a reputation

Of being very haunted.

What makes the olde angel inn special is the history.

Captain swayze obviously is the most popular ghost here.

The ghost is always running behind the bar back and forth.

Ghosts everywhere. We actually go there often.

The olde angel inn definitely has some creepy stories.

There's a sense of presence there.

It's absolutely haunted.

The folklore is,

As long as we keep

The british flag flying above the inn,

He will stay very calm.

If we brought it down,

I would not want to know what would happen.

[luke] wow, I love a bar.

Yeah, until you're seeing double.

[both chuckling]

And you might know me from orphan black or riverdale.

And I'm taurus, like luke and matthew-- fun fact.

Yes. I get scared very easily.

I just, like, watch them through my hands.

I know that we're going

Into one of canada's most haunted spaces.

I like to think that ghosts will see me

Our first hot spot for investigation

Is the pub, located on the main floor.

-[zoé] it's so good. -[luke] authentic.

[matthew] it smells old.

[zoé] there've been fries and drinks.

This place is really cool.

Look at this exposed brick.

Like, can I move in?

It doesn't feel particularly haunted at first

Because it does smell like french fries and beer.

Whoa, look at this.

Captain swayze.

"loyalist, lover, hero and ghost!"

It's so funny.

The photo quality back then just wasn't what it is today.

-I noticed that. -[luke] no.

[zoé] are you gonna pour us a drink?

[matthew] we only serve one thing here,

And that's a hefty dose of history.

-[zoé gasps] -in may of 1813--

-Are you sure about that? -[luke] yeah.

If there's one thing that we know,

[matthew] there was a barmaid working here

Who had fallen in love with captain swayze

Who we saw on the wall there,

When a surprise american invasion

Caught them both off guard

And captain swayze came back

To warn his love, the barmaid.

But it was too late and neither of them could escape.

So the barmaid told captain swayze

To hide in the cellar in the basement.

She said, "nobody's here,

There's no worry, you can trust me."

And the american soldiers found swayze's whereabouts

And came to kill her in cold blood.

It's said that her ghost still haunts this bar.

Guests, staff and paranormal investigators

All report seeing the apparition

Of the barmaid in this pub.

She's been seen standing behind the bar

And even walking through walls as if looking for her love.

[matthew] she's known to move things.

Do we want to try and evoke her spirit?

I would love to. How do we do that?

-Call out to her. -What's her name?

-[luke] hey, girl. -We don't actually know.

Barmaid, if you're here, can you give us a sign?

Can you make a noise

Or throw something around for us right here?

[rattling]

[matthew] have you ever heard of ghosts balls?

[zoé] I have not heard of ghosts balls.

[matthew] ghost balls are a tool

That light up when touched.

This flashing will eventually stop.

If something touches them at any point,

They will go off the way they're going off right now.

Barmaid, if you want to put a drink down on the table

Well, this is going exactly how I thought it would go.

I think we should just continue on our adventure in here.

[zoé] maybe she's just hanging out somewhere.

The one thing that all the ghosts know

Is the barrel.

This barrel's gonna make sense in about ten minutes,

But until then just go with it.

-Zoé, open the barrel. -Somebody's in there.

No, I'm scared. [laughs]

-I can hear someone in there. -No one is in there!

-I'm a good person! -No. [laughs]

[matthew] you have to open the barrel.

It's honestly a ghost hunting tool.

-[matthew] yeah it is. -Ah, I'm scared.

-It's just for you. -I'm scared!

[luke] matthew, you do it with her then.

We'll do it, we'll do it.

-[luke screams] -[zoé screams] don't do this!

On the handle.

[matthew] on the count of three.

Okay, so here's the gag.

I need you to get in the barrel.

-Yeah. [laughs] -why?

Since all the spirits in this house know

That somebody died in the barrel,

'cause the ghosts won't buy it, and we gotta make it real.

To try to empathize with your situation.

You know, talk to the bar maiden.

So there is a centipede crawling around in here.

Our second hot spot for investigation

Is the governor's room, located on the second floor.

[door creaking]

[tense music playing]

[matthew] I hate when you do that.

The second level of coach houses

Were typically inns

Where patrons could rest between travels.

When the american soldiers invaded,

They would have searched this very room.

And upon invading the olde angel,

An american soldier discovered captain swayze

In the basement cellar.

It's said that because of his unjust, dishonourable crime,

This soldier is tormented

And trapped within this room

Unable to face the ghost of the barmaid

He killed downstairs.

So he's trapped up here forever in purgatory.

Guests who stay in this room report strange activity,

Including objects being misplaced

And the feeling of being watched.

Should we try light as a feather, stiff as a board?

-[luke] yes! -Oh, my gosh!

I haven't done that since I was a kid.

-You've done this? -It was a long-- but yes.

-[mumbles] -okay. Okay, okay.

Don't we just repeat the words over and over again?

For your treasonous, unjust acts.

Is the cellar of the olde angel inn.

The ceilings are very low.

[matthew] whoa, what's down there?

[luke] there's alcohol, is it haunted?

[matthew] spirits.

I'm like, "if I were a ghost,

This is where I'd be hanging out."

[matthew] zo, what are you feeling down here?

-No scares? -So far no.

So my husband, who was the manager at the time,

Was downstairs in the cellar.

No one else was here

And a door slammed right behind him.

It was not windy.

I refuse to go down there.

I won't go through that door.

We are currently in the swayze cellar.

He was forced to hide in this cellar

When he was caught in a surprise american invasion.

-I remember this story. -[matthew laughs]

-How do you know this? -'cause I grew up here.

Yes, luke is actually from this cellar.

[all laughing]

And when the american soldiers arrived

Here at the olde angel inn,

They did question the barmaid,

"is captain swayze here?"

And she said, "no."

Captain swayze was hiding in one of the whiskey barrels

And this one american soldier

Ended up killing captain swayze.

According to local lore,

People have heard voices coming from this cellar,

Whiskey bottles rattling on their own

And a lucky few have even seen

Swayze's ghost walking around.

He is, like, canada's top ten,

One of, like, their biggest ghosts.

-Yeah. -Oh.

-And he wants revenge. -But wait.

I thought that you didn't believe in ghosts?

I just told you the folklore.

Okay, well, to put the rumours to rest,

Captain colin swayze was murdered right there.

So I think that's where we should put the rem pod.

If this place is truly haunted.

But she just wasn't able to interact with these toys.

Well, this is going exactly how I thought it would go.

The most entertaining thing in the room

Was the fact that zoé thought

There was someone in the barrel.

In hindsight, should we have done that?

But watching zoé just, like, freak out

Over nothing was also really funny.

The spirit board absolutely worked.

Like, you want to believe that it's gonna work,

It's like taking a shot

It's that little extra umph, to get the party started.

We've used this before and we've never yielded results

And I could feel it was moving

Even when luke's hands were off, so.

And that's what matters here today, kids.

And speaking to swayze as he would have been spoken to

He was responding to us

And then when I kind of misled him

And told him that we won the war,

He was really happy or really angry.

That was, like, a miss for me.

[director] the million dollar question is,

Okay.

The ghosting verdict

On our paranormal investigation

Into the olde angel inn is...

-Haunted. -Not haunted.

Like, hard-- hard--

Haunted by these two ghosts.

-No, there was nothing-- -two ghosts were there.

This is up there with most non-haunted places.

There's definitely a spirit present at the olde angel inn.

Does that make it haunted?

I guess so.

But it's not haunted

In a bad way.

It's haunted in a pretty cool way.
