the relationship was doomed.

way too sophisticated.

from the apartment in queens
where i grew up.

so, i'm in
the bathroom and, uh...

fixing my makeup,
and this knock on the door--

sam's father.

he always had this sixth
sense
about when i was upset.

and when he asked me

i told him that i thought

if we just cut our losses

and went
our separate ways.

what did he say?

he said,

"well, i hate
to tell you this, claire,

but if you ever leave me,
i'm going with you."

and then he said

that it was just as unfair

for me to judge them

based on what they looked
like
and how they acted

as it was for me to think
that they were judging me.

your husband sounds like
he was a very wise man.

and then we went
back to the table,

and i discovered

that they were actually
lovely people.

and i went out the next day
and i got myself

a copy of emily post,

and that was that.
