Albuquerque has what's
known as "the box."

It's a predictable
set of wind patterns,

that allow the balloonist to
navigate within a vertical box.

The surrounding mountains
form the sides of the box,

and the flat desert terrain
offers unlimited landing spots,

where the crew can meet up
with them.

It's not a race,
but a pleasure cruise.

For 50 years,
the Balloon Fiesta

has attracted balloonists
from all over the world

for one week
of festivities.

The main event is
the mass ascension,

where 500 balloonists
take to the air

in groups every 20 minutes.

To find out how
balloons operate,

I asked veteran pilot Jared Try
to give me a look inside.

The fabric is
a silk-like synthetic.

Very strong and light.

Hot air is lighter

than the surrounding
high altitude atmosphere here,

so when the propane gas jets

have heated the air
inside enough,

the balloon will rise.

To descend, the pilot has ropes

to open the flaps at the top
and sides of the balloon.

When hot air escapes,
the balloon descends.

A balloon can only
go up or down,

the rest is up to the wind.

It's a simple process that
has worked for centuries.
