Have you ever used a point-and-shoot

film camera?

I have overused this one and I've always

loved it, especially when that little flash pops.

It creates beautiful nostalgic look of photos that

us millennials especially like, as our childhood albums

are full of those.

Nowadays it's become very trendy to shoot with

these cameras and the good news is that

it's not also that hard to replicate this

kind of a look with digital cameras.

A photographer that was one of the first,

if not the first, to digitalize this look

was fashion photographer Terry Richardson and although I

don't really appreciate his affairs from behind the

scenes, I've always loved the simplicity of his

work and I was very drawn to learning

how to include this kind of photography in

my wedding work.

Now I know that for many at first

this look might seem a bit unprofessional or

you know just too obvious but actually that's

the main asset of it.

The main thing about these pictures is that

they look a bit amateurish and that's what

Terry's work has been founded on.

So the main characteristic of this look is

this direct light and a tiny shadow next

to the subject or things that we photograph.

Here's how we will achieve this.

Just the opposite from the previous look where

we will hold the flash further away from

the camera to create a bit more dramatic

look.

In this technique we will stick the flash

all the way close to the lens.

If you look at the point and shoot

camera you will notice that the flash is

super close to the lens and that's exactly

what we want to do.

So stick the flash all the way to

the lens.

Looking at the camera settings we can make

this look in two ways.

We can make the shadow dark and very

visible by putting more power in the flash

and underexposing the ambient light or we can

use the flash as fill light while preserving

a lot of ambient light and this will

make the shadow very subtle and light almost

invisible.

Just remember that for this first look you

should use higher shutter speed with regular TTL

setting for example and for the second look

you will probably need a bit slower shutter

speed and flash set at minus TTL setting.

I personally prefer the second look with these

brighter shadows as it looks more like something

a camera like this Olympus Mu would give

me usually.

But now that you know how to create

both of these looks you can decide for

yourself.

And that's it.

Done.
