can see, it's quite different from the last

time that we did our live.

Last time it was a webcam and our

office downstairs.

Now we made this whole setup with the

intention to film more helpful content for photographers

to start our podcast, our Reflections podcast, right?

So, yeah, we're gonna basically test it out

here.

We're gonna see what it looks like and

what it sounds like.

We're gonna answer your questions regarding Flash.

And yeah, we can kick it off.

I think we're gonna wait a bit, probably

like five to ten minutes before everybody rolls

in.

So, everyone was quiet with the questions and

that means two things.

Either our students are really happy with your

masterclass and they know already everything or they're

just too shy.

But please, guys, don't be shy.

We love your questions and we would like

to answer as many questions as you have

today and to help you out.

So, I prepared some questions as well for

Danilo, because he's the Flashmaster in our studio.

But we will first start with your questions

Are you guys always in Kelvin?

Do you try to shoot close to daylight

5200?

Oh, okay.

Here's the question.

We're starting with the questions.

Okay, awesome.

Basically, we always shoot everything a bit warmer,

on the warmer side.

Actually, we always shoot everything in shade.

In shade mode.

In shade mode on Canon cameras, it should

be around 7000 Kelvin.

So, we don't really use Kelvin that much

during daylight.

Actually, we set our cameras to shade mode,

regardless whether we shoot with a flash or

without, right?

And then maybe in the evening, we would

switch to Kelvin if we can't really find

the best white balance for the candlelight dinner

or something like that, right?

And I used to avoid auto white balance

for so long.

And this year, there were plenty of situations

where there was mixed light during the dinner

and I shoot mostly with natural light.

So, sometimes I would just turn to auto

mode for the white balance.

But with flash, if you shoot the dinner

time and it's like a candlelit situation, I

wouldn't suggest going to auto mode because I

know from my experience, you would get photos

to be too cool.

The white balance would be actually adjusted towards

the candlelit situation and then when you add

the flash, basically, everybody would look like from

the movie Avatar.

So, that's what we're trying to avoid.

And actually, I even like this look of

a bit warmer background.

When you hit your subject with the flash

in the evening situation, you get this very

yellow background, very warm background and then your

subject seems to be with just the right

tone when you set it around the shade.

Yeah, the skin tones are really, really beautiful.

I mean, we are fans of more this

yellowish golden tone to skin tones than that

reddish, right?

Kind of a look.

So, that's what we achieved straight from the

camera.

It's good when it's red or yellow.

It's not good when the skin tones are

green.

I just don't want green skin tones.

True, true.

Yes.

Well, the thing is, I discovered the power

of flash photography probably two, two and a

half years ago.

And I think so, right?

Well, not discovered, but I utilized it very...

Yeah, maybe three years.

To be precise, I utilized it two and

a half, three years ago.

And when I utilized it, the whole journey

of using flash for me felt like I

was exploring it.

I felt like, you know, oh my God,

I can do this, I can do that.

So, every time I would surprise myself with

what I could do with flash.

And basically, that's from where I made my

course.

I surprised myself with different looks and then

I put them down, put the system together.

And that's where my seven looks with flash

come from.

And this year, I didn't discover anything new

the previous year.

I felt like I was perfecting...

Mastering the craft.

Exactly.

I was perfecting my current techniques.

I was using these.

And honestly, I want to do something new

this year.

I would like to update it in some

way, find new ways around it.

One thing that I'm sure I'm going to

do this year is that I'm going to

change my flash.

I used to use Profoto A10 for all

my photos.

And I discovered and I've seen a lot

of discussion in the group as well about

the problematic syncing between the flash and the

transmitter.

For some reason, TTL doesn't really work spot

on every time.

And I figured when I was looking back

to some of the first photos that we

did back in the day when we used

only Godox, I figured that Godox was much

better balanced than Profoto on TTL mode.

So I might come back to Godox, actually.

I told you from the beginning, there's something

with the Godox flash that I really like

the results when you use that flash.

And I remember we were in Paris and

you told me, we have to go and

to buy Profoto, we have to buy that

flash.

It's like the best flash in the market

right now.

And then we were thinking, should we invest

that much money into flash?

And you told me, yes, it's going to

pay off.

And we should try.

And we tried.

And now you're telling me, maybe the Godox

is better.

But the thing is that the flash that

I like the most is the cheaper Godox

that we have.

It's the one that is square, it's not

round.

It's 840px or something like that.

There's something with that flash that for me

is like...

I can tell you what it is.

The angle of the light that comes out

from that flash is way wider than from

any other.

So I can't get that from Godox, I

can't get that from Profoto.

With that flash, if you extend that little

flap, it actually says that the angle of

the flash is...

The zoom setting on the flash turns out

to be 14mm.

Which is insanely good, because you don't get

any vignetting.

You get a wonderfully lit photo with it.

I don't know, let's see.

But the problem with that flash is that

it has these AA batteries and they're horrible

to work with.

And they're really slow with the charging and

everything.

And even the V1, it's a bit slow.

That's the main reason why I switched to

Profoto.

But if I need to choose between if

my flash is a bit slower or if

I get a perfectly exposed photo, I'd rather

probably go for the perfectly exposed photo.

I'm so surprised.

For me, it's unacceptable that you paid €1000

for a flash and you're not happy with

it.

And it's not that we're only experiencing that,

but many students as well.

So I'm really disappointed in Profoto.

Well, let's not turn this into a rant

against Profoto.

Let's see if we have some more constructive

talk today.

We have a question from Kyra.

We'd love to hear Sharon talk about how

she used on-flash camera for the wedding

you guys have been recently posting.

Love the photo she shot of the couple

with the bubbles or confetti.

Can you remember which one it was?

It's the wedding from LA that we shot

and that was published in Vogue.

And I think it's the photo of the

bride with confetti.

I know which one.

So usually I rely on Danilo during the

wedding day that he's going to shoot those

amazing shots.

Like the shots that you usually see on

our Instagram.

And I'm more on the side trying to

capture different angles because he's just too good

with the flash.

And the thing is that I just rely

on you.

So I used to be afraid to use

flash.

And now after you taught me how to

use it, I feel more relaxed.

And I feel more confident, of course.

But I'm still like, it's his thing.

So I use always on-camera flash.

For me, it's too heavy because I love

our camera.

I love our lens and I wouldn't change

that.

So I was just like, I'm going to

use on-camera flash.

And I actually like that look.

And it's Godox V1 that you use on

-camera, right?

Yeah, it's Godox V1.

And I just use it usually with TTL.

Just to give some context to the viewers

who are not familiar with this.

Yeah, so I use it like very simple,

nothing...

But what do you do?

So did you expose first for the background

and then turn on the flash?

Or what was your process?

Yeah, as you taught me.

I expose the camera for the situation that

is in front of me.

And I try to make it evenly lit.

Well exposed.

With the available light.

Yeah, with the available light.

And then I just turn on the flash

and turn on the TTL mode.

I try for one or three photos.

And then I see if I need to

go up with the flash or down.

To enhance its power or to lower it

down.

Yeah, the power of TTL.

So you go like to plus one third

or something like that, right?

With the TTL plus.

And I think on this photo I could

see some zoom.

Like some sort of a zoom on the

flash.

Probably you went a bit zoomed.

Yes, yes.

But you know that only during the party

and during the night time.

I really like to put the zoom on

the flash.

And to make the vignette around the subject.

Yeah, so.

I think that should be the eighth look.

Sharon's look.

That's mine.

That one is mine.

So the formula goes like this.

I think I know it well.

And you tell me if I said it

right.

So you basically just underexpose a bit the

available light.

You turn on the flash in TTL mode.

You switch your preview on camera to black

and white.

So that you can see what's light and

what's dark.

And then you zoom your flash not all

the way to 105.

But probably around 70 millimeters.

Sometimes even to 105.

Even to 105.

Okay, so sometimes even to 105.

And you just fire.

Yes, but when it's party time.

Then I like to set up the flash

manually.

And I turn off on the power like

sometimes to the maximum.

Just to make everything black.

And the subject to lit up the subject

the most.

So, yeah, that's mine.

So you go all the way underexposed with

the background.

And you only.

So it's something similar to the.

What was the spotlight?

I think the.

Oh, I forgot the name.

Spotlight party look.

Not spotlight party look.

But the other one.

The one where we would basically cancel.

I forgot how I named it.

Where we would basically cancel out the whole

background.

We would just see the subject lit with

a flash.

And for that one we would need to

fire the flash.

And it's maximum power.

And we tested it out.

I would basically.

I didn't bring it on the tripod.

I would usually put it somewhere on the

speaker.

On the musicians setup.

And you know I would just put it

somewhere in the background.

As the backlight.

I would test it out.

Show some photos to Sharon.

What it looks like.

She would tell me no.

And then I would go back to my

normal setup.

Because usually it didn't feel like it was

our style of flash photography.

Maybe from this year we might try something

like that.

We might play around it.

You know the thing is.

A lot of times we would hear this

question.

Is flash going to disappear from photography?

From wedding photography?

Are we going back to natural light?

I'm not sure.

I think there's so much unexplored territory with

flash.

That we can really play with this.

Backlight is one of the amazing flash use

cases.

It's just a matter of mastering it really

well.

And finding your way around it.

I think we just never had time to

explore it enough.

We would just put a flash.

Try it out.

And then I would be like no, no,

no.

Let's just do what we usually do.

And just to make sure that we have

the right shots.

But this year we are going to have

a third photographer.

For every wedding.

So we will have more time to play

around.

And honestly I cannot wait.

Because I think we would be even more

creative this year.

As we will have more time to explore

some new techniques.

And to try out things that we didn't

have time before.

I have a question.

It's from Sasha.

I have a question that might involve a

blend of flash photography.

And editing techniques.

I am unsure which is the primary factor.

I am eager to learn how to achieve

a chocolate skin tone in photos.

I always see it in flash photography.

Or at least that looks the best on

flash photos.

While Sharon prefers the white skin tones.

I am interested in mastering the capturing skin

that resembles a post-vocation glow.

Do you know how to do that?

Presets that can do that with skin also

mess up greens and everything else.

Well, what I saw.

Usually what I see is that.

As you said.

Whenever there is a preset that does that

to the skin tones.

That makes really chocolate and nice looking skin

tones.

It messes up the greens.

And I just don't like that look.

I like the look only on the skin

tones.

But a photo in general just doesn't look

right.

I like that look when someone is shooting

in a studio.

Like portraits in a studio setup.

But whenever it's outside I am just not

a fan of that look.

And I never explored that look.

To see how to achieve that.

Because I am just not a fan of

that change of the colors.

And everything looks too unnatural for me.

But we discussed this a bit earlier.

There were some photos posted in the group.

With the girl that had darker skin.

And there was a question.

How do you get darker skin not to

look so bright when shot with flash?

And then we discussed something about makeup.

And there was one of the things that

I think.

The flash will definitely only enhance the brightness

of the skin.

Especially when it reflects off the makeup.

Because makeup products make the skin usually glow.

And there are probably a lot of these

reflective particles.

Within these products.

That when the light hits them.

It's basically as if you would shoot.

When you shoot these reflective vests.

Or stuff like that.

It really brings back even more of the

light.

You can't really see that when you see

it in person.

I think our camera was.

That actually is supposed to resemble more.

The tungsten light.

So if you would put some of these

filters.

Maybe you would get a bit more of

the yellow punch on the skin.

As opposed to the white.

And then maybe that would help.

With the whole look.

But yeah.

Probably not the right people to ask.

Because our photos are everything.

But golden skin.

How would you set up your flash setting

for a champagne shower at night.

With little or no backlight?

For a champagne.

Tower.

Tower.

Probably.

Yeah.

At night with little or no backlight.

Well, I wouldn't.

Then I wouldn't care much about the background.

I would probably just expose for the subjects.

Usually in these situations.

Because if there is no light in the

background.

Usually these situations.

I would avoid using TTL.

Because this could easily trick my camera into

thinking.

That it should have more flash power.

Than it actually should.

So usually in these situations.

I would.

When they put out the champagne tower.

When the couple comes there.

Usually have like a minute or two to

set up.

To prepare.

I would probably switch my flash to manual

mode.

And I would test out a couple of

shots.

Probably I would set the exposure to.

One to two.

So 200th of a second.

With aperture around.

Let's say 6.3 or maybe even eight.

And then ISO probably around.

Let's say 400.

So that I get like baseline.

Good quality of photo.

That would probably cancel out.

All the background light.

And then I would just add flash power

manually.

So I would see how much I need

to add.

Probably in this situation.

It would be around 1.8 or 1

.25. I think from what I would now

set it.

And yeah.

Then I would just play around with it.

Maybe add a bit more.

But I actually love the look.

When there is a champagne tower.

And there is nothing in the background.

It's just the couple.

And the champagne tower.

Somehow gives me this old Hollywood glamorous look.

Especially if you stick out your hand really

far.

With your flash.

And then you get this more of a

spotlight.

Kind of a look on the couple.

And not really the typical flash shot.

It doesn't look that much like a flash.

Any tips for using flash outdoor for city

lights?

For city lights?

Well.

If you want to see city lights.

It means that you really have to expose

your camera.

Well you have to open up the aperture

probably.

You have to slow down the shutter speed.

So probably if you want to see city

lights.

ISO 1600.

Aperture maybe 4.

And then probably 160th of the shutter speed.

That would give you probably the baseline to

see the city lights.

And then again.

I wouldn't.

When there are these delicate situations.

I would usually go with manual flash.

Especially if you want to see city lights.

I would go with the minimum power.

See the city lights.

And then just add a bit more.

Just based on my taste.

And based on how much punch I want

to add to the photo.

Yeah.

I think so.

That again.

People shouldn't be afraid to test it out.

So take your time and test everything.

We always take a minute to test everything.

Whenever the situation or the whole setting changes.

So just take your time and test it

It's a backlight only from one angle.

To take the tripod.

Move the flash to another location.

And then shoot from that angle.

Something suddenly starts happening.

I think in that way.

If you're going to shoot with backlights a

You should have an assistant for sure.

And then have someone who is just going

Or use two cameras.

Have one just to be sure.

So I would just move around.
