except three air fields

The Army Air Corps B 24s
have been bombing this place

for the past 62 days.

Every yard of the island

is probably covered by some kind of fire.

As it seems now,

there are only two
possible landing beaches:

one on the east side of the island,

the other on the west.

Rest of the coastline is cliffs.

The nips will probably try
and keep us off the beaches.

If they don't do that,

they'll try and catch us
at this first airfield

between the heights of Suribachi here

and these high rocky ridges in the norfh.
