Hey, everybody.

Welcome to "The Road to the Playoffs."

I'm Carson Daly. So the knockouts are over.

And before we head into the next round of competition,

we're gonna take another look

at how we have arrived at this crucial stage.

First, new coach Kelsea Ballerini showed the boys

she was ready to fight for a win. Kelsea!

I am the new girl. I was shaking in my boots.

But make no mistake, I am here to play.

I've had 10 years of putting out music,

but I'm still learning the ropes here.

The more excited she gets, the more her hands start going.

I talk with my hands when I'm really passionate.

I love all kinds of music,

but I am die-hard country music.

There's no one that knows what it is like

to be a woman in Nashville...

Kelsea's new at this,

but she is very good at it already.

She's leaning into her career,

to her country roots, her roots in Nashville.

I've had duets with Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton.

I've sang with Dolly. Yes.

I gotta go with Kelsea.

Man, Kelsea is unstoppable with these country artists.

It's gonna be real tough to beat 'em all.

I know more than just country.

I want to continue to always evolve

and to be more than one thing.

I am actively on country radio and having crossover songs

and had collaborations with The Chainsmokers.

I just believe in music being music.

She obviously is in that country zone,

but her interests extend far beyond just country.

I love that about her.

Daly: 21-year-old country singer Jaelen Johnston

was a natural fit for Team Kelsea.

Jaelen: I got my first guitar at 16.

Nowadays, I'm playing every other, if not every weekend.

My mom and aunt are at every show.

We are his biggest fans. Yeah.

Jaelen: The values they instilled in me,

it's definitely hard work, dedication, and manners.

* Well, he kick-started that bike one night * Ooh, nice.

* And broke Mama's heart *

I like it so far.

What?!

Adam: Jaelen's got a cool voice, man.

Like a really tried-and-true baritone country voice.

[ Laughs ]

It's mean andrude.

Kelsea: I love a good, rich, Southern country voice.

And I think that's what makes him really, really special.

Michael: He's gonna be a great one for her.

You know, she nails that country stuff,

so great coach for him.

Your voice is amazing.

Daly: In the battles,

Kelsea invited Nashville superstars Little Big Town

to help bring out the best in her artists,

and Jaelen received some positive feedback.

Kelsea: Jaelen has this steady, warm voice, and he's so young,

and so there's so much room to keep growing.

John: In country music, I think there's a real place

for the kind of deep, soulful tone

that Jaelen sings with.

Daly: Kelsea continued to play the long game

with 50-year-old mother of four Tinika Wyatt,

who started her journey as Adam's Replay artist.

Tinika: While I was singing and no chairs were turning,

I felt like I must be going home.

You know, I've been gone a long time,

and I just -- I know! I thought you came back to get me.

Adam: It was a rich, soulful quality to what she was doing.

It's really hard to come out here

and just be aces from the jump.

How could I resist?

Daly: And Tinika continued to impress in the battles.

Tinika sounded so good. She was poised, confident.

The winner of this battle...

...is Conor.

Conor James is moving on to the knockouts.

Tinika makes me take a deep breath.

She's, like, a very calming vocalist

and energy to be around.

She just has it together.

Daly: In the knockouts, Tinika brought the house down

with her new coach by her side.

Kelsea: Tinika has a knowingness that she's supposed to be here.

Tinika is one of my favorite people on this show

because she's been the underdog, but she keeps on impressing.

Tinika, congratulations! You're going to the playoffs.

John: I love Tinika's resilience.

She was brilliant and soulful.

She's truly a gifted performer.

Daly: Distinctive artist 35-year-old Darius J

began his "Voice" journey on Team Adam.

Darius: In school, I did not have a lot of friends.

I was 13 when I came out.

I was bullied a lot for being different,

but I did notice that the bullying subsided

anytime I was singing.

You know, growing up on Section 8,

words can't even explain how proud I am of my son

because he's worked so hard to get here.

* I'm so caught up *

* Got me feeling it *

* Caught up *

* I don't know what it is *

* But it seems she's got me twisted *

* And I'm so *

Darius J is just such a presence, such an energy.

* I'm losing control *

* This girl's got a hold on me *

This character that comes out when he performs

is just larger than life, and you can't look away.

You are the best entertainer that I have seen...

I agree. ...on this stage.

One of my close, close friends, CeeLo Green,

would be very jealous of that outfit you're wearing.

Clearly, you're fearless because you get up there

with so much ease and confidence.

Adam: He's such a great, flashy, awesome performer.

The competition needs people like Darius.

We don't have enough sparkles, you know?

We don't have enough human disco balls.

We need some fun.

Kelsea: Yeah, that hurt.

Daly: And in the battles, Kelsea didn't hesitate

when Darius was available to steal.

I'm just a girl standing in front of a boy

He's such an amazing vocalist,

and I'm excited to see what Adam continues to do.

I love his confidence. I love his personality

that he adds to everything he says and does.

Darius J added some razzle dazzle to Team Kelsea.

He has this performance element to him.

at Universal Studios Hollywood.

When I'm fighting for a woman,

I immediately go into, like, big-sister role.

When I see these younger women having these moments,

I relate to it.

Women in music right now are killing,

and I would love to just walk alongside you.

Just girls bonding, having girl time. Oh, my God.

As a woman sitting here,

I'm really proud of you for taking this risk.

I was your age when all of this started for me.

You can tell she has a special bond with them.

I love John, and I love Michael, and I love Adam.

But they're not Kelsea. And they're not.

I know what I want, just like women do.

Adam: Kelsea is one of the nicest people

I've met in my profession.

She feels like kind of like a sister at this point.

It's great to have her and her perspective on the show.

Daly: 19-year-old returning artist Iris Herrera

was also persuaded by Kelsea's girl-power energy.

Last season, I didn't get any chairs.

After going home, I've done things to improve my breath,

taken the notes on, like, trying to really find my sound.

Kelsea: Iris is so cool. She has been from the jump.

The fact that she has such an old soul

and an old soul in her voice is so impressive to me.

Don't even think about it.

Iris is one of these amazing stories

where in season 26 we said to her,

"Hey, you should come back and try this again."

And look at her. Here she is. She's blown everybody away.

You're so beautiful. You'reso beautiful.

Michael, you're so beautiful.

You're very infectious, and you're very soulful.

I've been an Iris fan since day one.

She has such a cool voice, such a beautiful tone.

She's so, like, mature beyond her years.

Can't beat that. That's awesome.

Daly: Iris brought her unique tone as she headed into battle.

* And it kinda comes out as I get up to go *

Adam: Iris reminds me a little bit of Miley,

the same kind of intensity and the same type of, like, energy.

Iris, congratulations.

You're moving on to the knockouts.

Iris: I'm so excited to keep working with Kelsea.

I can't even say it out loud. It's surreal.

Daly: And Iris let her emotions shine in the knockouts.

I had to close my eyes so I didn't cry. No. It's okay.

Iris keeps showing us her growth.

She has a rich, beautiful voice and, honestly,

I thought that her getting emotional

Kelsea: Just knowing that she's that connected to the why.

I think that's what makes a great artist.

Daly: The final artist to fill Team Kelsea

was 21-year-old Alanna Lynise,

whose personal struggles helped her find her voice.

I was seven years old when my family lost my house.

I did not know we were homeless.

I thought it was like a continuous sleepover.

Eventually we as a family relocated

to live with my grandmother.

During these hard times,

music allowed my family to stick together.

* I got issues *

* You got 'em, too *

* So give 'em all to me, and I'll give mine to you *

* Yeah, I got issues *

* And one of them is how bad I need you *

I've known from the jump that Alanna is one to really watch.

I'm still in the stage of my career

where I'm closer to being a new artist,

but I think that's what might make me great for you.

Kelsea.

Alanna makes Kelsea's team really threatening

because now Kelsea has a little bit of everything.

* I know that you're wrong for me *

Daly: In the battles, Alanna got expert advice

from Kelsea and Little Big Town.

Kelsea: Alanna, this song is guttural.

I think it's coming from the place of, like,

you're screaming because you're so mad. Yeah.

And then watch when you're climbing the harmony.

John: Alanna -- her voice sounded so beautiful,

and she had us wrapped around her finger

in the palm of her hand.

Alanna, your voice, there's so much nuance to it.

Alanna took everything that we talked about

in rehearsals and showed up.

And then in knockouts, she knocked it all the way out.

* Woo, ooh * Adam: I turned for Alanna, but tonight she, like,

surpassed even my expectations.

I mean, she was really, really, really good.

This song and you singing it, it was your moment.

I love the nuance in Alanna's voice.

Kelsea: She brings soul and some warmth in her tone.

I think she just had her, like, a-star-is-born moment.

So going into the playoffs,

I have five truly incredible artists.

You have to be wonderful and great

and talented to get this far.

Some people may call it Team Kelsea.

What I know is that it is Team Kel-slay,

and we're about to continue to show that

in the playoffs, period.

and showed he is determined to win.

Daly: Adam returned, showing he was the coach to beat

with this next artist,

22-year-old Lucia Flores-Wiseman.

Lucia: I am a daughter of an immigrant Mexican father

and a white, blonde, blue-eyed mother.

I love them. Yay!

They saw that I loved music, and so we listened to

everything that you can think of.

And that led me to Brandi Carlile.

She lives in my hometown.

At 16 years old, I had the honor to sing with Brandi Carlile.

It gave me the confidence to keep on going with music.

John: Lucia's something special.

That tone is kind of exotic and different.

This is my 17th season doing the show,

and I just want to fall madly in love with a singer

and their voice that I felt was singular.

Michael: Lucia's performance was a really eclectic,

Latin-flavored thing.

You made a really good pitch.

Daly: This season, Adam brought in singer and actress

Kate Hudson to mentor his team in the battles.

Kate: I didn't want to cry, so I stopped myself.

Adam: I felt like I really got a special one when I got Lucia.

She's different. She's interesting.

So I feel very, very fortunate to have her on my team.

was full-time gigging musician Conor James.

I think that you have this unique ability,

on this show, specifically,

to really win this thing.

Conor -- he's truly one of the best vocalists on the show.

He has the voice, the vibe, the charisma

to win a lot of people over.

Daly: And in the battles, Conor's electric performance

dazzled our coaches.

It's a little bit Broadway, a little bit pop.

He's a lot of fun to watch.

And there's a soulfulness there, too.

Adam returned this season with a lot of energy,

but there's one thing he was missing.

I love you so much, man.

He didn't have the love and support

of his friend and country rival, Blake Shelton.

You know where you screwed up? When you started talking.

Keep doing nothing. It's doing really well for you.

Blake was like, "Adam's tough.

Sometimes he's mean. He's competitive."

He'smean.

I was nervous about Adam.

Blake has broken his heart over and over and over again.

We'll talk more about this trauma in a little bit. Yeah.

And plot twist -- he's a little angel baby.

You get the last word. You're being very nice.

Because I genuinely think you're a wonderful human being.

You know, he's a dad who's grown up a little bit

and there's, like, a softer, kinder Adam.

Adam has daughters, too, and you can tell he's, like,

envisioning the possible future.

John: Both Adam and I are much deeper into fatherhood now,

and I think it kind of sands off some of the edges a little bit.

I was being patient.

I am a softie, maybe even more so

than I was back in the day.

I just think you're really special,

and I think you were overlooked.

And I don't want that to happen again.

It's a beautiful thing doing it again.

And I did miss it a lot.

Adam: Could we ever go on, like, coach dates?

We can do, like, a coach spa day.

Daly: Adam's kindness came in handy when trying to land

former high school athlete Britton Moore.

I always wanted it.

Britton: I started playing sports when I was 4 years old.

Baseball was honestly everything.

I was on varsity as a freshman.

Sports was my main priority all throughout high school,

but music holds my heart.

Britton is just effortlessly good at singing.

He's like this unpolished diamond

because he can do just about everything.

I just felt, like, an instant connection with you.

And I thought, "This kid's gonna be special."

And I was right. You were amazing, dude.

Britton took all the expert advice to heart

and gave a show-stopping performance.

I love a good run.

You hit this note that was so beautiful,

I wanted you to stay on it and not trail down.

I think Britton is going to be a favorite.

I can just picture all of, like, the young girls watching

having, like, "Vote for Britton" t-shirts

or, like, "Team Britton."

Michael: Britt, you hit that top note,

and I was like, oh, no, Adam Levine.

Plagued by too much greatness.

You're like the boy next door,

and you make people really want to root for you.

Daly: And in the knockouts, Britton wowed our coaches

with a twist on a country song.

Michael: Britton has, like, a really clear and clean voice.

It's really pitch-perfect.

Britton, you just sing the living crap

out of everything you sing.

Daly: Congratulations!

Adam: I like that there was a lot of purity in his voice.

It doesn't sound like every other voice.

I think that Britton has the potential

to really shine in the playoffs.

from the University of Southern California.

Olivia: I was 16 when I first started singing with a jazz band.

Being on stage, I feel like it's my purpose in life,

truly, is to tell stories.

I think it makes me emotional

because it's really hard to be a musician.

Olivia hit those high notes with power and precision.

The treatment center that I went to, I go back there every week

and play there and give hope to people

that are literally sitting in the seat I sat in.
