these woods be a strange place

my grandmother always called this place

hole in the wall

there be two worlds she told me

one for men and one for magic

and betwixt them too

there be a hole

sometimes things pass through that hole

and then things she called the enchanted

ain't no folks living there anyways

let's go beat

come on

that old house has been on that trail

ever since they came

trailer should have been burned up a long time ago

now it's too late for the fire

you keep your big mouth shut this time

Commissioner Howard I'm gonna whip you

you and that squinch owl

both be digging my grave

with those stumpy feet of yours

Lord have mercy

you keep your big mouth shut here

don't want no noise out of you

will you be out there

it's me Roy Hagen

Mr Booker T

Pierce Hagan's boy do you remember

you sure do favor your daddy

that's a fact no lie

in favor of him I thought you might be his ghost

but I reckon no ghost like to feel my skin

no I don't reckon it does

book

when you come on in here I just came in this afternoon

got my Cadillac stuck in a marsh down there

a couple of miles back and had to walk on in

ah the old house is in pretty damn good shape

I was really surprised attention now and then

so as we so far back in these woods

nobody be messing around with it

everything seems to be right there

out of daddy's old stuff and

and Lily's too

uh huh

this place be sort of a museum

but I don't be changing nothing

I let it be I just sweeping dust here and there

be your place to do the changing

been hoping you'd come ever since your Aunt Lily died

been a while back what took you so long

well hey

come on home sit down

I've been out to see riding traitors around the world

riding those waves a long time boy

yeah

would you be

your plans now that you got your foots back in sand

I've been thinking about cattle ranching

you got the land

just waiting for those cows to come on

you know Booker

I turned down a lot of money for this land

can't figure out why I didn't take it

anyhow something brought me back here

might as well be cows

and that beats not knowing why I came

or why I wanna stay

time ain't for wasting on the wise

just figuring out those wise

is like a dog running after his own tail

leads to nothing

yeah

yeah

that's just what I've been doing Booker

chasing my own tail around in a big circle

you reckon your heart told you to stop a while

and I guess you could say that

I'm gonna give it a try anyhow

and I can't tell you about your own self Royce

but you looking for a place to stop

this here lands

as close to your blood family as you gonna get

just follow your instincts

that's all

and that's good

well I guess we'll see if my instincts do me right

reckon

you can help me get that old Cadillac out of the marsh

tomorrow

I'll be taking care of Pierce Hagen's boy

you see you be home now

I did it that's good

well almost to the end of it booger

uh huh

I think about you guys

no gator gonna beat you to the pond yeah

how's that you ain't slowed down yet

I left you in town last week

all you had was a no good Cadillac

now you gotta

pasture full of heifers and a fine man

in the crowd and something

always something

yeah well

once I make my mind up to do something

I tend to act on quick

that way I stay interested

uh huh

want to get a couple of calves in here right away

so as I can weed out the sorry cows

and besides that'll give me time

look around for a couple of high quality bulls

well that's done

how's wearing a backpack that's looking all right

sure do appreciate you help me Booker

anytime you need help you just holler of course

you don't know but I

but I'll be might pleased that you staying on here yeah

well now he knows it

come on

I'm hungry for a nice cold beer now you're talking

you ever been married Booker

no sir

I had a woman living out here with me a long time back

I took her back where she done come

I Learned then to keep my women in town

I likes to tip in love tip my hat and walk right up

don't want no woman having to die in love for me

no more

you must get lonely out here huh

and wish you have some nice lady around

no I didn't told you

I tried that before

and I find it worse being lonely and not alone

than being lonely with just myself

you hear what I'm saying yeah

I know what you mean about that

never get used to that kind of pain

hey what's just going on out here what you mean

and what do you reckon this is all about

they come to work done the same with me

they just come

yeah well

where they come from

they're living out there on your land

ain't they ask no questions

they come they work hard

they don't want much

well you sure don't sound too happy about it

how come you let them stay on

ain't got no choice in the matter

don't ask me no more

it's all this stuff about you

ain't got no choice in the matter

you just hiding the fact you got a soft heart

they got a name thems purgories

and what they call themselves purgories

and if I was you I wouldn't get too friendly with them

how is that because they wear them weird clothes

you heard what I said

well

I'm gonna go on out there and see what they're up to

you coming

I'm going home now I'm tired

one thing more Royce

they be different you go slow on them you hear

Mister Bird

Royce Hagens my name

it is a pleasure

well I see you have everything under control out here

there is little for my children to do here

and we're good workers you know

we thought we could help you on occasion

surely you can benefit from our assistance

and I don't doubt that for a second

Mr Perry looks like you got a pretty

good crew out here oh yes yes

well I don't suppose to do any harm

y'all working if you want to

plenty to do around here

alright y'all welcome anytime

you know I must have cat blood in me

never get tired of fish

and today I'm going fishing and catch fish anywhere

all I want to know is any water

fact is it's pretty low down by the creek

oh that's nothing

catch fish out of water bucket

oh here

take that with you I'll keep Skeeters off your neck

and you can smoke it too

for my first two casts of done coming

is that so yeah

they doing good yes they're real good

them purges

you've been a moth to place shit

no as a matter of fact

I kind of hired them on

they helped me get that old Orange Grove out there

back in shape you're right about them working hard

you ain't getting too friendly with them is you

Booker I don't know nothing about those folks

except they dug and planted me a great garden

now they're working out there

like somebody never seen before

in those orange trees

so for you go warning me off of them again

I know they're uh

what a little strange I guess I like that about them

they're real shy quiet

like real backwoods you know

maybe 2 backwards is a problem

I ain't saying you're not worth with him

just stay your distance and don't get too personal

you hear what I'm saying boy

all right Booker

I wasn't thinking on it anyway

I'll try not to get too personal with them pervertries

well

I think I'm gonna ease on into town

I'll see you later

wake yourself up Pete

let's go on fishing

hey Kimmy Landon

it sure was nice of y'all to bring his food

all the way over here

haven't that this good since I can remember

all she do is pick flowers all day

and you know why because all she thinks about is Royce

Royce Royce Royce

Pop told me today

how about some more bread

Mr Hagan yes ma'am

help yourself to more greens

I don't mind if I do

sure is good

why did I made them

they took them in hog jail

you could not be pork Mr Hagen

we eat no meat

we don't how come

we don't like the taste of meat

you don't like it you had not to eat it

oh look papa look at Mr Hagan

that's it papa

we finished our work good time to go home

we put in a good day

how you make it out excellently

well we finished for the day

you sure have done a fine job

Mr Berger I figure this is just about what I owe you

and I sure do appreciate you working so hard

oh no

Mr Hagan you owe us nothing

oh please take it and

please call me Royce and that goes for you too

you gigglers I'm gonna go out and look over my cows

you wanna come oh no

haha boy

these two are a case ain't it

Mr Fergie hey look

there's Twila Sugar you okay finally

you got I better not

oh come on yeah

maybe she's scared just like you

I have her back just after dark don't worry

have you spoken to her yet

no I do not think it necessary

she seems to be following her natural instincts

that's good

you know I've sensed that

she knows it's time for her to leave us

are you scared no

can we rest a bit here sure

hey yeah

you see him

they seem to be doing alright

they look so sad to be alive

so frightened they must know they're in

nah I don't think they're pondering over their future

look at that out there

all the grass they can eat

water to drink

nah they don't have it so bad

they're living for now they're lucky

you okay back there

yes just checking

I felt that shiver run up your backbone

it's that owl and a whale in the woods

they're screaming tonight I know something

well what is it that they know

I can't say I just feel so dangerous

hey you ain't one of them psychic people

are you

you know one of those people who say

they can see things before they happen

I told you before I know nothing of the future

I can't see things before they happen

I'm glad of that

I only know the moment I feel it

it's a sense like fear it just comes

you know what it is I like about you Twyla

you are scary do you mean I frighten you

I don't know if that's the right word for it

but whatever it is I like it

hey isn't that Booker's truck pulling out of there

does he come by here often

he doesn't come to visit

but he leaves for us things that he brings from town

oh he does

does he

don't you folks ever go into town

no we don't want to

so it's a big help to us that he brings these things

still my family and I are afraid of it

Booker

why in hell be scared of Booker

he wouldn't harm anything and wouldn't bite back

I don't know why he frightens us

but he knows this so he doesn't get too close

yeah I noticed that

you better get on in now

must happen that I see you again soon

alone

this be a clean killing yes

it do

ain't a natural thing Royce

something very strange going on here

come out of nowhere just like out of the air

well whatever it is that killed this cat

you think it'll be back hmm

can't say something like this

be hard to predict yeah

could be he's just passing through

that's right

I passed through here my own self yesterday

and I saw that purgatory girl

sitting up on the horse with you

yeah you reckon that's got something to do with this

do you bucker

I didn't told you to stay clear

them people ain't no joking on it

and I've been living out here

in these woods all my life

and I tell you there's something strange going on here

these woods have the reputation of the power

when I was young and they used to be a conjuror

I was called him the swapper

used to come all the way from New Orleans

to gather roots out of these woods

and the word passed on and

my grandmama used to send roots to conjurors

all over country

that's where the name hole in the wall come from

the hoodoo put his name on these woods

Pearson

Lindy knew about the strange power of these Woods Hole

ain't that so

yeah yeah

I heard some of those stories Booker

but that stuff's like folk tales

that never really happened

anyway what's all this got to do with the purgories

what be a folk tale be the truth turned shape by time

what you got here look like a wolf

then killed your cat

and there ain't been no wolves in Florida over 40 years

now these poetry people

they come in here just like the wolf

other than words

I've been living here all my life

and I've seen some strange things going on

and these purgories be one of them

yeah well Booker

if they be so strange to you

how come it is you bring them supplies in from town

and what you be a hound dog snooping around

I ain't saying

not to help the purges get along in the world

just telling you

not to let them get close to your heart

that's all

well I always watch out for that anyway

I'll be bringing you my own gun to use

you don't be owning one does you

no but it looks like I'm gonna have to get one

you sure do

bad enough the cats did

just be a nasty killing here

last night

I heard the wind howling and a witch owl squawking

and I know something was happening in these woods

it come out of the air

out of nowhere

do you understand chap

I think so mama

but why we were given the power to choose a new life

and that my dear one

is a rare gift

is it really true

it's so hard to believe that we were once

hush child you must never let the words of our secret

pass through your lips you must remember this never

do you understand

do the others know

no only you and your father and I know we have told you

because you're the first to leave

are you frightened no

I don't feel afraid that's good

because the choice we have made

may be too difficult for us to live by

and we must know if we have made the right decision

before the fall comes

how will you know it's right

this choice you twyla

it will depend on you

we will wait to see if you can survive in this new life

you're about to enter

what if you won't take me Mama

he will take you I know

I see it in his eyes when he looks at you

he sees you a woman

and a man who lives alone needs a woman

there'll be no problem with this union

you will both follow your natural instincts

now go to sleep

you must wake early to prepare yourself

what in the hell are you doing hiding up there

I'm watching you work

come you got your face all painted up like that

don't like it

and I never said I didn't like it

well it's just that uh

you

sure have a different way of

no you do look strangely nice like that

I mean uh

you know you look uh

well you know you uh

if you want to watch me work

you don't have to to hide

I was waiting until I was ready

ready for what

to attract you to me

well now I'd say you've done that

and now what are you gonna do

well there's only one room left to paint yeah

which one that little one

with all the pretty things

that's my Aunt Lily's room

my daddy's sister

hey you look great

you don't mind that I wear the Aunt Lily thing

nah do whatever you want with that stuff in there now

and that's your room wanna go for a ride

great I'll get the heck out of here

you heard Pete you were there

told him about messing with that girl

now he living with her

no sir

it ain't likely

no good's gonna come out of that situation

hey I can tell by that look

that you ain't all that pleased to see my smiling face

today Booker

ain't you ain't pleased to see it's who you got

well looks like you've been seeing me

and I ain't been seeing you

that's why you ain't been by lately huh

that's right

or this don't be funny business like that

grant

you ain't headed for a good time

like to think it

you getting yourself

messed up

with something that you don't know nothing about

you best be considering on these things hard

like I tell you come on now Booker

you're really starting to sound too much

like a preacher

and sometimes a cranky old preacher at that

you listen what I say boy

I warned you and I told you

now I ain't gonna condone the fact that

you living with that purdy girl

no sir

hey now

let's just let's just hold this up a minute right here

are you telling me what I can do and what I can't do

Ross I'm just telling you

what you can't see with your own eyes

you still be a boy in some ways

and I see you winding up on the end

and finding yourself looking like sucker bait

who the hell you think you're talking to here

you telling me where I can get on and get off

what you condone

you ain't my daddy

let's just say that I want things right for you

you be Pierce's boy

and I cradled you in my arms when you were this big

I may not be got you but I damn near raised you

now if that don't mean Jack shit to you

well that don't matter

cause you be part of my history and that do matter

all I want is what's good for you

and that don't include those pouches

well could be you're right

maybe I am in fact getting mixed up in something

I don't know all that much about

and on the other hand

I think that's just what I like about it

there be some responsibilities

people never get freed of

things gonna happen they happen

that be the way of the world

and I see you don't be understanding what I'm saying

so I'm gonna say one more word

I hope I never need to say what comes betwixt you two

that's all

all right that's fair enough

all right that's a promise I

won't be asking you about it

oh hell why don't you just

you know come on and take a ride in town with me

no you go on

I got to tend these greens I'll be busy

come on by the house sometime when you can

she ain't so scary

hey I just want to tell you

I'm gonna go on out to Grove now

oh yeah so you're getting ready to paint up this room

huh

you gonna use all that paint in this one room

I don't know yet I was just looking at the colors

they're all so nice I don't know which one to use

well hell

use them all if you want to

well I'll see you later Royce

yeah

who are they well

it seems to me that must be Booker's Granny May

and that one's of my daddy Pierce

that might be Aunt Lily I don't know who did them

beats me poker might know

may I ask you sure

I would like it that you not look in this room

until I bring you here after the walls are painted

yeah

okay

I'll catch you later

I believe 49 95 is too much to pay for those tires

I tell you

I went out there and I had a mounted up on my 4 grams

and air there it's not wide enough

what happens is is a MUD packs in them like that

and they get in that MUD and they

just spin and turn and throw MUD

and throw frogs and everything else out there

I don't know what to think about it

I'mma tell you I like they're too much money

what do you think about it

I don't think I believe it

what hey damn

aren't you Royce Hagan is it

hey Charlie

hey boy

it's been a long time remember Garcia

my name is Garcia how you been man

when a while Booker didn't bother to tell me

you boys were still around these parts haha

Booker well

don't see much of Booker anymore

I don't like the fact

I don't get my rocks off killing animals much

it tends to be the harmony always was

you know I'm living out there in the backwoods

he thinks he knows everything there is to know about

everything I see him every once in a while

he comes into town

chasing women or selling greens or something

I heard he got land rich off that piece

your Aunt Lily giving oh yeah

I reckon he did hey

you all want some beers

yeah alright

so where you been anyway boy

well I tell you

they're around a few blocks

South America life how I miss Florida

nothing like it it's good hahaha

oh man hahaha

you know don't you

that your daddy and mine are

probably two of the finest hunting guides

the state of Florida has ever known

except for Booker

that old leg of his never kept him

out of the woods but he old now

folks around here still big on hunting

you know you don't tell us that well

oh yeah

I'll believe it next day

he's the hottest hunting guy that they got around here

now ain't nothing but hot about him

he got some hot dogs

that's about all he's got is hot that his wife

and I'm about ready to go see her out right now

I'll see y'all later

have you always lived with your folks

till you came here yes

we've tried to stay together

I thought you didn't remember your past

I know I've always stayed with my family

you never have been uh

I mean you

you never have been with a man before

no

I've never known a man before you

where did you live before you came here

I've always lived here

and you won't let me know too much about you will you

I'm ready to show you my room now

hey ain't there any light in here wait

what is this did I do wrong

are you kidding

I know you were in here doing all this

I thought you know

you were painting the walls

this is really amazing I had no idea that you could

is that Pete that's Pete isn't it

it must be Booker

let's turn on the light

I've never done anything like this before

it just happened

there's something about this room

I felt it the first time I

came in some special feeling

you really don't mind

why would I mind

come here hush I need that

this must have taken you a lot of work to do all this

what's all that

how come he got his arm around that bird like that

is this you folks over here

why'd you quit

you got a whole wall here left to paint

you take all that stuff down

well

I have no more pictures to paint now

guys be in there get on out here

be another killing

what

any tracks rain in the future this time

rain be proper fortune opening working for you

come on look at where's the cafe wow

yonder you know

what do you think Ol'pharaoh

don't think about rain

Moses commenced to pouring frogs on the Kingdom

Nate ain't working for you using trouble Jack

I guess I'll go see Tellus about some traps

mm hmm

I got two that might work

Tellus he has a rig for this

he got some badass trap he's done

hey Tillis oh

hi Roy how you doing

how you doing pretty good

hey you got a minute

I'm gonna talk to you sure

hey Roy

you can take over for a while here yeah

well I want you to meet Roy Hagan

you know Pierce Hagan son

alright alright

we admire your daddy he's a great man after all that

let's get a drink

hey how you been making out

hot shot

I need to borrow some traps killers

well you've got them

what you got foxes

ah worse than that

some kind of huge dog been killing my calves

Booker see the kill

yeah yeah

he thinks it's a wolf a wolf

yeah old Booker

he's I tend to be superstitious lately

what you're figuring a stakeout

yeah

well I don't believe you're gonna catch him in a trap

I ain't got much choice well

I'll tell you what you do

you set them traps

and when you get hit again

call me and I'll bring out my dogs

might be 3:00 o'clock in the morning

uh don't worry about it

hot shot we'll catch him

are you feeling better Chaya

you have natural fears as we all do

but you learn to beat those fears in order to survive

you really believe this papa

I was so frightened I feel I failed

you have not failed you have adjusted well

I hope so mama

I've been so happy with Royce and he with you

look he comes for you now

I did not want him to see me so frail

maybe he's angry with me no

he's concerned for you

he's confused by your disappearance

go to him now

yes and believe in your strength

hey how y'all folks

he is a good man

I hope she can make it to pass her fears

he seems to be understanding in his ways

we will wait to see what happens

then we must make a move for the other children

they're growing fast you know

yes

I don't like it when you leave the woods to go to town

I feel really safe here with you

next time

why don't you leave me a note before you disappear

I don't know how to write words

well we know you can make pictures

so next time leave me a picture then where you are

I had my jealous

there be no flies in this kingdom

skeeters is the flies

busting around

good for nothing

look at you lying there like you a prince

while I'm killing the flies around you

you talk about good for nothing

there you is

I guess I'll lay myself down

somebody don't dump you out of that car

sure ain't no woods camp

oh there you don't come out

I know it's a bad luck to get rid of you

so it looks like I'm gonna have to raise you on up

cat to come at the full of the moon

be a sign or something

what I mean lies you got left with

I reckon the way you look

you can use up most of them already

this here is Pete

that dog gonna be snapping his jaws around

nothing less than home cooked don't you be wary

maybe you'd be gracious enough to

killing a few flies around here

yes sir

they'd be

buzzing around all the summer

flies on the ceiling flies on the floor

I hope you like greens

I probably won't be back till supper time

I gotta get the Grove sprayed

I thought I'd see you folks about that

I should have mentioned it to him last night

but it's stuck in my mind

main thing is I gotta get up with Booker

and get those traps set for a nightfall

you want to come along no

I have work to do here

I'll wait for you yeah alright

you'll never spoil me girl

and I'll see you later

they don't lay there too long drinking that coffee

too much of it will give it a shake

oh what happened

you drop something I'm sorry

I forgot to prepare food tonight

don't worry about it ain't that one

sorry chicken ears

that one don't lay no eggs

well I thought maybe you might

could cook her up for me tonight

maybe you can borrow some night

hey

hey

hey you alright

come on come here

Twilight Twilight

what you need is some sleep

I'll get back to you soon as I can when you wake up

if you're still feeling shaky

just go on over to your folks

we are Tunis like to hit it out the back way

the size of that brick

looks like you gonna need some more dogs

I took the horses on back find you in the morning

you be tired Tillis too hot out here needs rest

I got the way put him in the truck

now you stay close to Pete

you'll make no sound get the trail Peter

you're gonna have to move fast and quiet

no noise with the walking

maybe you sneak right up on him

I'm going around the back in the hole in the wall

nobody Old Grove you know what that is

yeah I'll be there

maybe you chase him to me and I gets the shot

you stay close to Pete

let Pete away from your eyes or you'll sing

go on

I missed my shot too Royce

I ain't missed nothing

there he is Booker

don't talk no ghost talk

these words to berth another just like him ran off

that way

let's get us to us get him out of here

haha I'll be damned

if you don't be acting like he's deserving the honors

told you he'd be a manipulator

yeah I got that bottle of whiskey tucked away somewhere

don't you sit down I'll see if I can find it

hey Twyla

Twyla

Royce

there's something I gotta tell you

really used paint pictures in this bedroom

she'd be gone Royce

I know Lily's gone Booker

what are you saying

ain't you talking about Lily gone

oh you're talking about Twyla right

and I'm sure she's gone

I told her she'd probably be over her folks place

they all be gone

you sure of that are you Booker

just what is it you know that I don't know

damn it

now I want to know what's going on between you and them

you got something to tell me

you say it to me straight

ain't nothing straight about it except this

look around you boy

look hard

the pictures tell the story

you see

she be gone

they all be gone

yeah you're talking crazy poker

she was here when you brought the horses back right

yes

she probably took the mare out

no Royce

she be gone

is everything hidden in the fire

yes papa

and have we all agreed on the choice that we have made

yes papa

twyla we cannot leave unless it is the choice of all

yes Mama

you must believe in your choice

my child otherwise

it will not be possible

for us to return to our natural life

I knew them purges

would have to go back to being what they was before

they was too weak to live with us

too much fear

but these woods be a strange place

maybe someday

something else will come out of these woods

to try and live in our world

something strong not afraid

wise to the ways of men

hopes we don't have no more trouble
