Billie!
Billie! Billie! Billie!
Billie!
Women are just, like, at the top right now.
I mean, top of all the charts, it's women, women, women.
I mean, it's, like, the most incredible thing for me to see.
With a style and attitude that defies conventions
and a unique sound within the industry, it's
hard to deny that Billie Eilish has become
synonymous with the current pop culture.
Her music resonates with millions of fans around
the world, selling out arenas and stadiums, making
her one of the largest artists today.
With her biggest fan base being teenagers and
young adults, Billie will have a long-lasting
influence in the music industry for decades to come.
This is the story of how a young teenage girl broke the rules of music and
changed the game forever.
From bad guy to bossa nova, Billie, with
the help of her brother Finneas, have taken
the music world by storm with their unique presence.
And with four widely beloved and acclaimed albums,
all with distinct styles and themes, this brother
sister combo have become a power duo in the industry.
And there is no stopping them now.
Billie Eilish, Pirate Baird O'Connell, was born
on December 18, 2001, in Los Angeles, California.
Raised in a household filled with creativity, Billie
was homeschooled alongside her brother by their parents,
Maggie Baird and Patrick O'Connell, both of
whom are also in the entertainment industry.
Her middle name, which later went on to
become her stage name, Eilish, was originally meant to be her first name.
However, during her mother's pregnancy, her grandfather, William
Baird, passed away.
And so her parents decided to name their
daughter Billie after her late grandfather.
They encouraged their children from a young age
to pursue any dream and career they wanted,
giving them freedom to express themselves and pursue different options.
Our parents were theater people before they were our parents.
And they met on a flight to Alaska to do regional theater in 1984.
And in the 90s, they got married to each other and they decided to start a
family, and they decided that it might be
a good idea to move from New York,
where they were doing plays, to Los Angeles
to maybe do some things that would make
some residual income, like film and television.
And that didn't work out at all.
And I think it underscored, as children, that
it was okay to have dreams that didn't
pan out the way that you thought they might.
At a young age, Billie was diagnosed with
Tourette syndrome and also synesthesia, a neurological condition
that causes people to have heightened senses or
experience multiple senses at the same time, and
most commonly, in Billie's case, linking colors to
music, which is why, in her later discography,
each album has a very specific and unique color palette to it.
Billie's chosen career path, however, was entertainment, specifically
dancing, music, and acting.
From a young age, Billie was involved in
music, creating melodies with her brother from just
age 6 and learning to play the ukulele a few years later.
Billie has said, I don't know how to function without music.
When I'm not making it, I'm listening to it.
It gives me courage and takes care of my mind.
Billie wrote her first real song at just
11 years old, which was apparently about a zombie apocalypse.
Though her dancing would come to a sudden
conclusion when in 2016, a growth plate injury
ended her dance career for good, causing her
to decide to fully focus on recording music.
With the help of her brother, who by this point had been in his own band
and producing his own music, she created a
small number of songs and put them up
onto the music streaming platform SoundCloud for free
at the age of just 13 years old.
The first songs they recorded together were called
She's Broken and Fingers Crossed, the former written
by Phineas and the latter by Eilish.
These songs performed well, however.
It was her next track, Ocean Eyes, that
would truly take off, skyrocketing her and her
brother into the mainstream's eyes and landing them a record deal.

After the success of her SoundCloud singles, Billie, with
the help of Phineas and his natural production
skills, went on to create and release her
first EP, Don't Smile at Me, in August of 2017.
Released through Darkroom and Interscope Records, Don't Smile
at Me proved to be a breakout hit album for the young Billie, with some of
the singles reaching up to top five on the charts.
The album featured catchy and soulful lyrics that
dealt with everything from self-doubt, depression, and
even murder, all in the style that Billie has become known for.
The red and yellow palettes of the
cover was Billie's way of blending simplicity with
something bold and eye-catching.
It wasn't polished or flashy.
It was just Billie.
The phrase, don't smile at me, was Billie's
way of rejecting societal norms and expectations, especially being a woman.
She explained, everyone's taught to smile.
Girls are like, look happy.
Look like you're having fun.
I'm not gonna look like anybody except what I am.

One of the more personal tracks on the
album, I Don't Wanna Be You Anymore, is
an introspective ballad all about Billie's self-doubt and inner conflict.
Billie, when talking about this track, described it
as one of the hardest songs to write because it forced her to get into her

Her distinct artistry, production, and melancholic pop vocals

showcasing her talent.
However, it was her next album that propelled her to greater heights.
In 2019, Eilish released her first ever studio
album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?
The album was game-changing.
Building on the momentum from her breakout EP,
Billie and her brother pushed boundaries with a
record that was bold, eerie, and unapologetically unique.

Eilish began earning her first major accolades in

But if I'm trying to think rationally, next, I don't know what is next.

I think I'm gonna, whatever I'm in the mood for is what I'm gonna go for.
In July of that same year, the question
was answered when Billie followed up her first
studio album and released her second full-length album, Happier Than Ever.
Unlike her first album, this one, while still
being melancholic and somber, was less nightmarish-themed.
Instead, it dealt with more real issues Billie
was having at the time, like her rise
to fame and challenges in her personal relationships.
She took great inspiration from the COVID pandemic,
as well as her recent breakup with rapper 7AMP.
The album infused lyrics with raw emotion and
power and embraced her femininity while still being
loyal to her signature style.
The cover art, with a vintage 1920s to
30s Hollywood vibe and a golden color scheme, enhances its appeal.
Billie's blue eyes and single tear capture the
album's melancholy, while her blonde hair embodies the
brighter Hollywood starlet aesthetic she aimed for.
Eilish's hair color had always been of huge
importance when coming across the themes and ideas
of each album, and this blonde hair gave
her the more brighter Hollywood starlet look she was going for.
During this time, Billie also radically changed her
appearance to match her new theme, with new
blonde hair and embracing her more feminine side,
being willing to show more of her skin
and even modeling in a corset for Vogue,
a stark contrast from the baggy clothes and
completely covered up look she had before.
The beige, golden browns of this new style
gave her a vintage look, continuing the motif
of an old Hollywood look the album had.
The album title, Happier Than Ever, may seem
ironic given its themes of heartbreak and frustration,
but Billie described it as therapeutic, helping her
heal, let go of toxicity, and embrace strength and happiness.
Like, right now, I'm wearing a tighter shirt,

showcased her introspection, vulnerability, and a more expansive sound.
The title track of the record, Happier Than
Ever, was easily the most popular because it
was so surprising to its listeners.

like it could have come from the radio
in the 1950s, eventually explodes into a loud

Another noticeable track on the album was Oxytocin.
This pulsing, high-energy, and sexually charged song

Providing sultry and provocative lyrics and an intense
electronic production, this was the first time Billie
had sang such a sexual, hypnotic, and intense song.
And to the fans, it paid off.
Happier than ever was Billie at her most experimental,
and Oxytocin was a perfect example of this.

listener, letting out all the anger and disappointment
about the way she has been perceived by
people, and the objectification of women, despite at
the time of her first album's release, being just an underage girl.
This track also came with a short film

After the huge success of Happier Than Ever,
Billie managed to land herself an exclusive special

where she performed the album in its entirety
with the LA Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl Amphitheater.
The film received critical acclaim, winning multiple awards,
with some even saying the performances were just
as good, if not better than the studio album.
Her first full arena tour came in 2022,
appropriately named the Happier Than Ever Tour, and
was a huge success for Billie.
Happier Than Ever overall was Billie at her
most experimental and self-confident.
Ultimately, it serves as a beautiful and dreamlike
follow-up to the unattainable heights of the
nightmarish When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?
Back in 2022, though, Billie surprised her fans
by releasing two new songs onto streaming services
without announcement under an EP named Guitar Songs.
These two songs, TV and The 30th, were
sentimental songs backed by simple acoustic guitar.
TV explores the topics of abandonment and a
desire for numbness as a distraction from the
problems that plague the world, while The 30th
is a more personal track that, in the
past, Billie has refused to perform live.
It features lyrics centered around a car crash
that occurred on November 30th that almost killed her closest friend.
Both of these tracks, while being a big
surprise for fans, were widely met with a warm reception.
In 2023, Billie contributed the iconic What Was

Both Eilish and Finneas have talked at length

They even considered stopping completely and not even making another album.
However, after completing the first couple of songs,
Skinny and The Greatest, Eilish said she knew

The album, while definitely still melancholic tonally, presents

The cover art for the album is interesting to say the least.
Truly committed to her craft, she went through
a grueling six hours to complete the album
