zip line

of the mountain.

for a zip line.

The first one that
we want to put in is very long.

But then
we don't wanna stop there.

We want everyone
at their house,

we wanna be
able to zip-line to Mom's and Dad's.

And I think
that will bring us all closer together.

After a failed first attempt

to raise the main line,

the Wolf Pack

braces for round two.

I think we've had
a heatstroke of genius.

Before the family determines next steps

for their ambitious
zip line project,

the siblings contend with
the yearly challenge

of summer on the ranch.

You know, it's
really important to find some way to cool off

when it gets
as hot as it is.

In Alaska,
when it'd get up to 70,

we'd go jump in
the creek or swim in the ocean

or just something
like that.

But here,
there's none of that.

They're like,
"Where are you going with my water?"

And up.

What we're thinking

is a mobile pool.

Which is a great idea,
'cause everybody's so spread out.

You know, we can't bring them
to the body of water,

we're gonna bring
the body of water to them.

It's like if you could swim
in your canteen,

just on a bigger scale.

is enjoying
what you're doing.

The dream was never
just having a piece of property.

It was living the property.

I feel like we've
built up to the point where

it's all becoming
a reality,

and it's time,

branch out and do some of that

more imaginative crazy,

kooky kind of stuff.

It has been
getting extremely hot.

It's like too hot.

When you look at
the thermometer, that is what it says, "too hot".

It literally was
over 105 degrees the other day.

One of my kryptonites
is actually the heat itself.

It just puts me
right down.

It's the only thing
that'll stop me from running, from jogging,

I just get so weak
in the heat.

I do smell a
little bit of wood smoke.

And it smells pretty strongly.

Smoke is definitely
coming from that way.

It could be a long
ways away.

It travels so well,
especially with the wind picked up like this.

It's a little unnerving having
the smoke,

especially coming right
down the two mountains

right there,
funneling in.

Off, right there, ways,
ways, ways, in the distance...

Oh, yeah,
that's definitely it.

There's a fire
fairly close to us.

I better go ahead
and head down and let everybody else know

that we do have
fire in the area.

As Bear alerts
the Wolf Pack,

the flames

quickly spread...

...growing by the second

and forcing

and emergency evacuation.

We've been warned
about wildfires,

we've been
taking precautions,

but I never thought
for a second

that one would spark up
so fast and so intense.

Holy hell!

This is insane.
The entire mountain is going up.

I'm extremely
concerned

that it would take out
the entire mountain.

We've built up
a lot of things that are necessities on the ranch.

We built up the ostrich pen.
We built up the barn.

Then we built up
the main house.

This house represents
the Wolf Pack's entire dream.

It is like the worst
possible nightmare that there could be.

That's just what
it looks like.

Is everybody accounted
for in here?

We weren't gonna
stop until we found you all.

A deadly wildfire has

spread to the
Brown's mountain.

The family and crew

are forced to immediately
evacuate.

We just got some
helicopter support.

I assume they're gonna
drop water on it.

Already,

this is the biggest
devastation that we've ever faced.

When we finally have
everything...

there comes this...

literal wall of fire

to destroy it.

We got everyone
evacuated and now

Bear and I are just down here
with the fire crew,

just watching
them do their work,

save the day.

God bless them!

Our home's burning

and there's
nothing we can do about it.

There's no way to help.

I know fire fighters
and everyone's doing everything they can,

but it...

it hurts knowing I can't do
anything for our animals.

All the animals as is
are either loose... -

...or with us.

We're just praying
that it doesn't ignite the entire mountain.

- They're wondering
why I'm not there. -

And when I'm gonna
come feed them and when I'm gonna come and save them...

and I can't.

Despite
fire fighters' best efforts,

the wildfire devastates

more than 5,000 acres

overnight.

Well, I'm quite
concerned actually that

this fire is
still spreading.

I just hope that all
the animals and everything is safe and that we get to

go back out soon
and get our eyes on it and see

how much of it is intact.

I mean, is our
barn still there?

Is the forever home
we were working on for Mom and Dad still there?

We just don't
know right now.

We're in town,

and there are
helicopters and airplanes,

they're dropping
the water on it.

- As much as we try
to be prepared... -

...we're not prepared
for this.

It's been a little bit now,

and we're just...
We're just in the dark.

It's up to the Good Lord
at this point.

Trust in the big guy
upstairs.

It's not only us
that's been affected,

it's more people, too.

This is
a very devastating thing,

that's gonna change
a lot of lives.

There are other families
further down the mountain.

There are towns
that are close by,

there are orchards,
there are farms.

A lot of people stand to lose
everything that they have.

We have water,
camping gear,

and a little bit
of, like, soups and stuff.

In the bush,
the code is, you know, you help each other.

It's not even
just friends help friends,

it's people help people.

We've even had strangers reaching out to us,

offering their pastures,
and offering their barns,

and their houses
and their clothes up to us, and that just...

It means the world
in times like this.

Relying on community

is a staple
of life in the bush,

so Bird and Rain
seek the guidance of a neighbor,

who's faced nature's
most devastating force before.

Did you lose

We don't really know.

Um, but as I was looking
while driving off,

everything was pretty,
pretty inflamed.

Just circled
the whole property,

and, kind of, closed in.

Pat was
actually the gentleman

that gave me
my hot water heater.

And he's helped a lot,
you know, in the past,

and in town
and everything,

- like, finding things for us.
- Good job.

Did you lose any cattle?

We can't get
the longhorns off.

Um, but longhorns
have been seen, so they're...

- Yeah.
- They've made it so far.

- Well, that's good news.
- Yeah.

And it sounds like
they're, kind of, corralling themselves

back into where they know,
which is good.

About five years ago,
there was a tough mountain fire.

They were evacuating,
a level three evacuation,

and the looters
were coming in,

and the fire
would come after that.

Is that something to, like,
be concerned about?

It's only the chosen few,
you know?

- Right.
- 'Cause it's a small community,

but they're still here.

You still gotta protect
what you own. - Oh, yeah.

'Cause somebody's
gonna take it if you don't.

Pat brings up looters,

and he's saying
how people actually

just go up and start looting
what's left.

And, to be honest,
that's something I never really thought about.

I feel like you almost
wouldn't even know

what the looters took
and what the fire took

'cause it would
just be gone. - Exactly.

In the past,
you know, looters and stuff

is definitely something
we haven't really had to worry about.

If a looter does come,
I won't shoot anyone,

but I'm gonna
let 'em know I'm serious.

This is my mountain,

and I still want
whatever belongings are up there.

That evening...

Rain, let's go.

...shifting wind patterns
give the Browns

a short opening
to mount a rescue.

We just got permission to go up to the mountain.

The forest service
and the fire department said

it's something to do
with the atmosphere.

The fire has died
a little bit.

We don't have time
to go and tell anybody else.

This window
has to be now,

and I'm not gonna waste
a single second.

With the fire still raging,

it's the first
and likely last opportunity

to return to the mountain
before all is lost.

With only
a very short window

to rescue
some of the animals,

it doesn't
leave us any time

to, like, see
what else is standing.

Oh, babies.

The horses, more than
any of the other animals,

they get spooked,
they get scared.

They end up
not knowing what to do,

and they just don't do well
with the fire.

- Come on.
- Come on, babies.

Come on. Come on.

Get back up. Come on.

Okay, they're
going back up.

The team manages to wrangle four horses,

as the fire
dangerously closes in.

Let's go.
Everybody, into the tunnel.

Come on, guys.
Get in there. Go.

In. Load.

Over the next few days, the wildfire magnifies,

devastating
over 18,000 acres.

Let's go. Come on.

But fortunately, for the Browns,

they're able to embark
on a few brief rescue missions.

Yeah.
We got you now.

We've rescued
all the chickens,

we've rescued
all the ducks,

and we've rescued
all the goat.

So, it's like a weight
off my back

to be able to bring
more of our livestock off the mountain,

and make sure
that they stay okay.

The recovered livestock

shelter at local homes
and farms down mountain.

But while most
of their animals have been saved,

Bird hopes
the two remaining horses

might have
escaped to safety on nearby land.

Woodland! Willow!

Woodland and Willow
were the first horses I ever had.

We have a special bond.

I think that's horse.

The hardest part
for me right now

is not knowing
if they're okay.

Did they even
escape the fire?

And I am trying
not to think those thoughts,

but I can't help but think
that I wasn't there,

like I always said
I would be,

and I don't know
that they are okay.

Maybe they see me.
Are they excited?

The last two
finally made it down. - Thank you so much.

I found them wandering
through the ash together.

I can't thank the people that actually went up

and got
the horses down enough.

We've got
Woodland and Willow!

It is a sign of hope.

It's a sign
that North Star Ranch isn't necessarily lost.

such a bond together, you know?

It is a huge blessing
that all the horses

made it off the mountain
in one piece.

This could have
very easily been a lot worse than it has been.

And that's how I know
that God is holding us in the palm of His hands.

you seem to be settling nicely.

It's just numbing.

The Browns
survey the damage to North Star Ranch.

Like a dragon came through and hit everything.

It was like
an alien world.

Two weeks
after evacuating North Star Ranch,

the wildfire
that displaced the Browns

is finally under control.

Finally a little bit of good news.

Right now, the fire
is over 80% contained,

which does mean
it's safe to go up.

In one way,
I'm excited,

but in another way,
I almost don't even

want to go up
and see it.

My worst nightmare right now
is if it's just all gone,

and there's
just nothing left.

Bird, do you wanna
go ahead and take the shotgun, just in case?

Uh, if you have it-- something.

While air quality on the mountain

is still too hazardous
for parents Billy and and Ami...

- Okay, let's do this.
- Here we go.

...the siblings return
to assess the damage to their homestead.

Those two weeks seemed really, really long.

They seemed like forever,

waiting for the fire
to just die out or get under control,

and to be able
to even go back up to the property

and see
what had happened.

I think that
I'm a little nervous.

Yeah?
Nervous to see it all,

or nervous just to
get up there again?

A little bit of both.
I feel, like, a little nervous

to see
what isn't there.

Going back up
to the mountain,

uh, you know, I know
it's not going to look like I remember it,

uh, because it's just...

I don't know.
I don't think there's going to be much there.

Last time
we were up here,

- it was actually on fire.
- Yeah.

And now that it's not,
it's going to be a lot different.

Just, like, as far
as you can see.

There's so much
devastation.

Doesn't even
look the same.

It looks like
an alien world.

Wow.

Not much left.

Well, the park bench
made it.

Still got a couple
of grassy spots

that seem
to have survived somehow.

The little duck coop
is completely gone.

It looks like it just clean
swept right through.

Total devastation.

When fire goes through,
it's gonna burn everything that can burn,

so I was
pretty much expecting it to look like this.

Just like a dragon
came through and hit everything,

which, basically, it did.

It is devastating.

It's a different kind of blow
than in the past,

because we're all spread out,
doing our own thing.

Come on.
Work with me.

I had put in
so much work on my own,

put so much
into that property,

and so many unique ideas.

And just the days
that we fought

just to get in supplies
and to get them up there.

No more rabbitat.

And for all that
just to be burned to sunder,

there are no words.

We've lost
a lot of stuff.

At this point,
you would think I'd be numb to it.

But it always hits you
a little bit differently every time.

The Browns have definitely
had their fair share of loss.

And with this
total devastation of everything,

we're gonna try
to just press on through, I think.

It's anybody's guess
at the moment.

I know it's been hard
for everyone.

Burned all the
sagebrush for sure.

Here we go.

Growing up,
when I was a kid, fire was survival.

Without fire,
you couldn't stay warm, you couldn't stay dry,

and you couldn't fed.

Here, in the lower 48,
fire more resembles death, to be honest.

When fire is left unchecked
or it goes out of control

or has just
too much timber around,

it becomes a massive force
of extreme destruction.

This doesn't look like
it's too bad, actually.

The old ostriches,
they're safe.

Hey, there, boy.

The whole hill
across the side here burned.

My flag tree is burned.

But the ground here,
there's still grass in this,

so the fire
doesn't look like it got here.

But I'm just hoping
that the heat

didn't heat this baby
up enough

to actually mess
anything up inside.

Oh, boy.

I have a lot
of my prized possessions in here.

Well, everything
I have left, so...

Oh, great.
It's untouched.

Plus, it doesn't look like
it got hot in here at all.

I don't think
the fire got close enough to actually heat it up,

which almost
makes me feel bad.

I guess I should
appear more excited,

but, to be honest,
I'm just concerned

with the other guys' stuff
'cause I happen to know

that they didn't fare
quite so well.

My family and I have lost
so much stuff over the years,

but a home is the people,

it's the Wolf Pack
and the family.

I am happy
to have my stuff,

but I am gonna go ahead
and move out,

see if I can't help
some of the other wolves.

To be honest,
I'm one of those

hope for the best,
prepare for the worst type of people.

So, I was hoping that
nothing would be damaged,

the fire just went around,

but I was expecting
everything to be...

total devastation.

Sucks.

That's such a shame.

I don't really know
how to process this.

After a wildfire
raged through their ranch weeks earlier...

It's difficult
to sit here and look at

the last few years
of your life just burned,

your belongings gone.

Rhain took to Alaska
when she met me,

it was in there.

The blanket that my mother...

...made for
Eli was in his crib.

And it's gone.

- You know what really bums me?

Eli's rattle.

That sucks.

The mash tent meant a lot.

Ah. Noah, it smells like home.

Yeah.

There was still pine needles

and the tent that
were from Alaska.

Rhain was still pregnant
with Eli when we were in that house.

Some of Eli's first steps
were in that house.

What do you
have there?

I wanted to literally fold
it up once we had the castle

and I wanted to give it
to my son someday.

It's disheartening

to lose stuff like this.

The things that have memories
attached so strongly to them,

but it's not heartbreaking.

You know, 'cause
my family survived.

I haven't seen my tiny house

since before the fire.

Walking up,
I see that it's still there.

I'm very thankful that my home
is still standing.

It looks the same.

Just looks a little bit
more tattered.

It's not really
what I had expected.

Because the house is here
which I'm thankful for. My deck is fine.

Most of my belongings
seem okay.

But, you know,
everything around it is gone.

I do feel guilty

that my house was saved.

I just wish that we were able
to save everybody else's.

But I can't thank the people
that saved my house enough.

That was everything
that I had.

The devil is never gonna stop
trying to knock us down.

There is never gonna be
a moment where it's easy.

But I know
that God has a plan,

and I trust that
wholeheartedly

and I think that,
with everything that we've been through,

it'd be stupid
not to trust that.

As tough as it is,
every time...

we make it out.

I knew my place got hit
from day one.

But coming up here
and actually seeing it,

it's just all gone.

Right here used to be
very thick forest.

And now it's pretty much
nothing.

We can actually even see
to the next ridge over there.

Doesn't look like any trees
on my place survived really.

Everything that I had
on my land, I had a plan for.

It was supposed to be
my first home.

Well, this one is
where I had my weapons,

and most importantly my .45.

My .45 meant a lot

'cause it's the .45
I had in Alaska.

And it's the piece of Alaska
that I still had.

I didn't wanna leave Alaska.

And so I came to Washington
'cause family is where home is.

And so...

I wanna make Washington work.

And that's why I'm here.
That's why I built my house.

But to see it like this,
and for this to happen,

it's, like,
when is it gonna end?

When do we get the house?

- I don't think that much
is gonna be salvageable. - Nah.

Final hope rests
in the most vital structure of the ranch.

- Oh, man.
Oh, look at that.

Oh, my gosh.

The ground is
really warm right here.

Some of this ground
is falling through.

The fire got so intense here
that it's burned into the roots

and underground.

Got a couple of smoldering
over here.

So what I'm trying to do
right now is actually bury over it.

I'm going to suffocate it

by pouring all the dirt
that I can on it.

Cutting off its oxygen
essentially.

Fire is an extraordinarily

dangerous living thing,
because it eats,

technically, reproduces,

can die and breathe.

It's so hot.

It's not gonna put it out
completely, but it will help cover it over.

So if wind sweeps through,

the dirt will be blocking it
and won't spark back up to fire.

Whew. Can taste the ashes.

Ready to see
the rest of the place? - I Guess so.

For the first time
in weeks,

Billy and Ami Brown return
to their mountain homestead

joined by their children.

They hope the ranch's
cornerstone structures remain intact...

...starting with their
massive pole barn.

It definitely
doesn't feel good

standing here, looking
at the barn and it's just nothing left.

We put so much into it.

So much heart and soul
and effort.

I was really proud
of that barn.

And I didn't put a nail in it.
That's why I was so proud of it.

This thing is the first thing
you all did

totally on your own, you know.

- The cornerstone.

The guys and I,
we put a lot of time into the barn.

And we built the barn first

because the barn
was supposed to be the roots.

'cause we had just built up

where it looked like
the sky was the limit.

It was like
if you can dream it, you can make it.

Just took at all of that.

And now we're worst off
than square one.

the longhorns bust out?

Yeah. The fence
was all burned up and everything,

but there was no sign
of the longhorns.

But we could hear them
rustling around in the bushes and stuff in the distance.

It's hard to think about
right now be honest with you. - Mmm-hmm.

I just do wonder
when we are gonna get a break.

It's like forever.
Everything is always being destroyed.

Can we have a couple of years
of like

just having a barn
and everyone being healthy?

Could have been
a lot worse. - It could have. Yeah.

We could have lost
everything, so.

To me it was...

Like, it meant a lot.

And I didn't really realize
how much it meant to me until I lost it.

Standing here
and seeing that the barn is gone,

it's definitely hard for
that voice inside of doubt,

and the voice
that's trying to make you lose hope.

It's hard to suppress that.

As much as we had built up,

it definitely feels like
it's being taken away a little bit.

To have been,
just the end of the day,

talking about how far
we've come

and how we have so much built.
Now we can just start enjoying

and started building zip lines
and doing fun things.

For this to have happened,

now what?

Yeah, I mean, it's like
back to square one.

I think that much
is gonna be salvageable either.

Well, it's a miracle,
but she is still standing.

As we round the corner
and see the big house,

it's there.

It looks like the firefighters
like cut some lines around it.

I feel like in the long run,
this is all that matters, that it made it.

it might be a different hint.

It is an extreme relief
that the house is still standing.

The house did not get
burned down. That it's in one piece still.

Now if that's not a sign,

We could have been left

This isn't anything. - Mmm-mmm.

Everything is all right. We're not that good.

Yeah, but we don't
sit around dreading.

But when we're totally up
against it,

and the whole world's
just falling down around us,

that's when the Browns
are at their best.

So we stay the course.

We do what we do.
We work together and we just keep going.

And we'll fight.

Everything we need
in this place, anything, we'll be open.

That sounds good.

Couldn't ask what the
Good Lord showed us,

that's when everything is
in front of us.

Let's just hope for
the future.

There is no doubt
in my mind we'll keep going.

You know, the Wolf Pack
is not gonna be stopped here.

This is just one more thing
for us to all band together over and overcome.

And I have faith that we will.

Group hug. Group hug.

One for all,
and all for one.

It's hard to say
what keeps us, you know,

going through hard times
and tragedy and

it's definitely the Good Lord.
It's family.

And I think a lot of it
I know, for me, is that

I'm not gonna let
anything else win

and knock me down.

Dad's dream
is worth fighting for.

We're not gonna let this fire
stop us from making it.

We're still going to
build up everything that we had planned to build up.

We're still gonna build up
the zip line.

We're still gonna pursue
the goal.

We will continue
to build it up

even better than
it was before.

is this fire starting back up
and getting out of control.

Mom's and Dad's house
could easily catch fire.
