K-pop has officially taken over the world.

Now some of the biggest artists on the planet

are a result of a booming idol culture

that has brought incredible songs, unmatched choreography,

and high-concept production to a music revolution.

But there is one group

which has taken the industry by storm, BLACKPINK.

Join us as we explore the K-pop takeover

and celebrate the girls who are propelling the genre

to all corners of the globe.

K-pop is a genre of popular music

originating in South Korea.

The modern form of K-pop

can be traced back to the early '90s,

with the formation of one of the earliest K-pop groups,

Seo Taiji and Boys, in 1992.

The trio debuted on MBC's talent show on April 11th, 1992,

with their song "Nan Arayo,"

and got the lowest rating from the jury.

However, the song and their self-titled debut album

became so successful that, according to MTV Iggy,

K-pop music would never be the same again.

Their experimentation

with different styles and genres of music,

and integration of foreign musical elements,

helped reshape and modernize

South Korea's contemporary music scene.

Modern K-pop idol culture

began with the boy band, H.O.T., in 1996.

From there, K-pop grew into a subculture

that amassed enormous fandoms of teenagers and young adults.

After a slump in early K-pop,

from 2003 TVXQ and BoA started a new generation

of K-pop idols

that broke the music genre

into the neighboring Japanese market

and continue to popularize K-pop internationally today.

With the advent of social media and Korean TV shows,

the current spread of K-pop and Korean entertainment,

known as the Korean Wave,

is seen not only in East Asia and Southeast Asia,

but also in Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Latin America,

North Africa, Southern Africa, the Middle East,

and throughout the Western world,

gaining a widespread global audience.

K-pop acts are divided into generations.

Currently, there are five generations

that are broken down in the following ways.

The First Generation

are considered the founders of the genre,

the ones who started it all.

This includes acts like Seo Taiji and Boys,

H.O.T., g.o.d., S.E.S.

Second Generation are widely considered

to be the first groups that broke international barriers.

TVXQ, Super Junior, Rain, Brown Eyed Girls.

Third Generation continued to push

for international success and recognition.

These include Block B, SISTAR, After School, Miss A.

Fourth Generation grabbed the spotlight

and forced it to shine bright on them,

making storms both domestically and internationally.

This includes acts like EXO, RV, Got7, BOTB.

Fifth Generation is the current generation with BTS, EXO,

Seventeen, iKon, GFRIEND, CLC, G-IDLE, BLACKPINK, Twice,

Stray Kids, NCT, Momoland.

This is the generation leading the charge

with a social media army at their back.

This is K-pop for the modern generation.

We're going to be taking a look at some of the biggest acts

and their biggest hits,

as we chart the incredible growth of K-pop

into the globally dominating force it is today.

K-pop groups are formed through entertainment companies.

The big three companies are JYP Entertainment,

YG Entertainment, and SM Entertainment.

Often the most successful and widespread groups

come from here due to the attention they garner

and the large investment they can make

into publishing and promotions.

In 2012, Psy's "Gangnam style"

was most of the world's early introduction to K-pop.

The music video went viral,

and held rank as the most viewed YouTube video

for five years.

Its mix of outrageous visuals,

tightly choreographed dancing and catchy melody,

struck a chord around the world.

Kim Hee-chul,

better known by the mononym, Heechul,

is a member of second generation South Korean boy group,

Super Junior, and has further participated in its subgroup,

Super Junior-T, as well as project group, Universe Cowards.

Prior to his debut in Super Junior,

Heelchul began his acting career in 2005,

starring in the second season of teen drama, "Sharp 2."

Subsequently, this led him to host his first music show,

"Show Music Tank",

appear on advertisements and host radio shows.

However, in 2006, just a year after his Super Junior debut,

Heechul was involved in a car accident

which fractured his left leg.

The accident left him unable to perform

Super Junior's strenuous dances,

and made him instead focus on contributing to the group

mostly as a singer.

In 2009, Heechul ventured into the soundtrack singing career

by releasing his first single, "First Star",

as part of the soundtrack for his drama,

"Loving You a Thousand Times."

He also participated in writing the lyrics

for not only his band,

but also for his project groups and other artists.

In 2019, Heechul debuted as solo singer

by releasing his digital single, "Old Movie."

In 2010, Heechul became a regular cast member

in "Radio Star",

where his popularity skyrocketed,

and he won Best Newcomer Award

at the 11th MBC Entertainment Awards.

Following that, he made a breakthrough

in his television host career,

after appearing on "Knowing Bros" and "Weekly Idol."

In 2019, he was recognized for his role in reality shows

and received the Excellence Award

at the 13th SBS Entertainment Awards,

his first major award as an entertainer.

EXO is a South Korean Chinese boy band

based in Seoul with nine members.

Xiumin, Suho, Lay, Baekhyun, Chen, Chanyeol,

D.O., Kai and Sehun.

The band was formed by SM Entertainment in 2011

and debuted in 2012.

Their music incorporates genres like pop, hip hop and R&B,

alongside electronic dance music genres,

like house, trap and synth pop.

The band ranked as one of the top five

most influential celebrities

on the Forbes Korea Power Celebrity list

each year from 2014 to 2018,

and have been named the biggest boy band in the world

and the Kings of K-pop by media outlets.

On June 9th, 2016, EXO released "Monster",

which would go on to become arguably their biggest hit.

"Monster" is a dark and intense medium tempo dance song

with lyrics about a man's excessive fixation on his lover.

And the music video captures that essence

with powerful imagery.

At the very start, it's not just about,

we didn't like back in the days in 2013,

I don't think we had this big, big attitude,

like we gonna change the industry

or we gonna change the whole world,

or we gonna influence like millions and billions of people.

What we could do, and what we knew to do,

was just telling the stories what's our insight

and to express it by the performances and the dances.

Jin, SUGA, j-hope, RM, Jimin, V, Jungkook.

This is BTS, the biggest boy band since The Beatles.

BTS!

Their high energy performances,

thought-provoking lyrics,

and trendsetting style has set them apart

from all other musicians,

as they continue to reinvent pop culture.

Like an 11 out of 10.

A dedicated army of fans,

that is literally called ARMY, follow BTS's every move,

and continue to support the band's journey

to becoming superstar idols.

Big Hit Entertainment debuted the boy band in 2013,

but it took until 2015 for BTS to set their sights

on taking the mainstream.

Shifting their sound and image

from solely aggressive masculine hip hop

to more diverse styles,

BTS wanted to express the beauty and anxiousness of youth.

You know, as time goes by, we grew up,

and we've been getting so much love from all the fans

and they started to tell us that our message

and our performances changed their lives

and inspired their's there so much, so for us,

what makes us keep going,

and keep going through this whole hardships and ironies

of this industry and this big fame,

was that there was,

we helped them love themselves more,

and our stories, and our message, and our performances

helped them get the open mind and the positivities.

So it's like, I expressed actually at one interview in 2014

that this is BTS

and this thing is about charging each other's batteries.

So we do our things, and messages,

and the performances,

and they tell us how we influence them,

and it's like charging each other.

And at first, at 2013,

we didn't have this specific attitude,

or this big thing, but they changed us,

and I'm very happy to be able to do that

and we're very happy to be the messenger

for many people's lives, and the positivities

BTS released their second album,

"Wings", in 2016,

with fans rushing to get their hands on a copy.

"Wings" opened at number 26 on the U.S. Billboard 200,

the highest chart ranking ever for a K-pop album,

and BTS became the first Korean group

to top the Billboard Social 50 chart that month.

It was their first million seller album,

moving over 1.5 million copies in South Korea that year.

BTS commenced their second world tour,

visiting 12 countries,

and performing in larger and larger venues.

Tickets for the North American leg sold out within minutes,

and two additional shows were added due to high demand,

making BTS the first K-pop act to sell out arenas

in the United States.

Now some of these fans have been camping out here

for two nights.

As you can see,

it hasn't done anything to their energy levels.

BTS world tour, non-stop,.

In September, 2017,

BTS released the first part of the series, their fifth EP,

"Love Yourself Her,"

and featured music from the Chainsmokers' Andrew Taggart

for the track, "Best of Me."

"DNA" was the lead single on the album

and became a huge international hit.

The music video broke the previous record

for most viewed K-pop group music video

within the first 24 hours,

with more than 20 million views on YouTube.

"Love Yourself" sent BTS higher than ever before.

In November, 2017,

BTS became the first K-pop group

to perform at the American Music Awards,

raising their profile internationally.

That same month.

Guinness World Records revealed that BTS

had earned a spot in their 2018 edition,

for having the world's most Twitter engagements

for a music group.

attended the 61st Grammy Awards as award presenters,

and even surpassed five billion streams on Spotify

I have two questions if I may.

One, okay, I'll ask one.

I have a question to j-hope.

In May,

you were on a American show,

and it was a tribute to The Beatles,

and now you're here in the UK, the land of The Beatles,

and some people say that you are The Beatles

of the 21st century.

So how did it feel to have that tribute performance,

and now you're here in UK,

and the home of The Beatles,

I'm sure it's very special.

So if you could tell,

j-hope, if you can tell us how you felt at the performance

and how you feel now,

now that you're here in the UK.

Well, first, it's an honor

being on that TV program,

and sort of recreating The Beatles performance,

and have that performance with that theme,

The Beatles theme,

again, it was an amazing honor,

and of course The Beatles are artists that we love,

and I personally was very honored and very happy.

Now, BTS has its,

BTS has its own unique music and our own unique color,

our unique colors.

So I hope that you continue to show,

and show our own color and our own themes,

and try to show the world, and show to you our own color,

our own music, and now here, we are here in the UK,

and we want to show the UK who we are,

and our own color.

And Wembley Stadium, of course,

is a very historical,

a very important location venue,

so he have moved forward to this conference,

Oh, any anecdotes or episodes on the TV show?

Well, the costume was very unique,

also I can remember, we were amazed at the costume,

the theme of the costume that we wore of The Beatles.

And now for me, personally,

you know, I listened to some Beatles music

before the performance and then of course I sang "Hey Jude"

during the interview,

and the fans and the audience members

seemed to really like it.

And the band also played along to the song.

So I think that was very special,

and I think it was very fun,

and the show is very comfortable.

They made us feel like very comfortable.

I just have a quick question from ITN,

and we would like to know,

is there a British band that you guys

would want to do a collaboration with?

Of course, I have loved Coldplay for years,

and listened to them forever.

So I always felt that I, when I came to the UK,

whenever I come to the UK,

I listen to Coldplay in the car when I go to a performance,

so if there's an opportunity,

I'd like to work with Coldplay, and that'd be great,

if there's an opportunity,

Oh, they came to Korea like years ago,

and me and j-hope went to the concert,

it's like a Wembley in Korea,

and they came, so we saw Chris Martin and the other members,

and it was a great memory.

So I think everybody, everybody loves Coldplay,

and maybe, of course, Paul McCartney,

it'd be such a great, great, great honor

if we could collaborate with him.

Why here, why Wembley?

I think there is a very symbolic importance

of a performance here at Wembley Stadium.

And I think there are some dream stages,

and of course, there are stadiums in the United States,

in Paris, everywhere.

but I think, you know, we, when we were young,

we saw the meeting.

My brother and I, when we were young,

we grew up watching the Live Aid performance on video,

so we felt that coming here to Wembley,

we felt that this a moment that we want to share

with the rest of the world,

and I don't know, I think,

just thinking about coming here to Wembley,

I barely got any sleep last night,

so that's how you nervous we are,

and that's how fantastic, I think,

this performance is going to be.

So I think all of our fans who will watch it live

will also share in a lot of this enthusiasm that we have.

So we don't know when,

but when we have our world stadium tour,

we would like invite you again,

and have a press conference again,

and I think, you know,

to be here was half being serious,

but we are thrilled that we are actually here

as one of the members mentioned earlier

that we have our performance here,

BLACKPINK, the hottest K-pop group

in the world right now.

The all female lineup is currently dominating the industry

and achieving new heights with every release.

They are a phenomena that none of their predecessors

could ever match,

but what is their secret to success?

Is it talent, hard work

or their drive to bring K-pop to listeners

in all corners of the globe?

Whatever the case, the group's dedicated fandom,

called Blinks, go crazy for them with every new release.

BLACKPINK is a South Korean girl group,

formed by YG Entertainment,

consisting of members Jisoo, Jennie, Rose, and Lisa.

After five grueling years of auditions and training,

BLACKPINK debuted in 2016

with many critics now dubbing them

as the biggest girl group on the planet.

The road to international success was not always easy,

but the group now leads the Korean Wave

with their girl crush concept

and stylistic exploration of themes

like self-confidence and female empowerment.

BLACKPINK's music is rooted in EDM and pop

mixed with elements of hip hop and trap.

The group also never shies away from incorporating

a variety of other styles in their discography,

such as R&B, Arabic music, ballad, disco and Rock.

The girls' ability to add up

to up make them stand out from the crowd

in the world of K-pop.

When BLACKPINK debuted in 2016

with their first album, "Square One,"

many fans had their reservations about them.

They were taking the place

of YG entertainment's former girls group, 2NE1,

which had firmly made its place in the world of K-pop.

The album included the early hits,

"Whistle" and "Boombayah."

"Whistle" debuted atop the Gaon Digital Chart

and sold more than 2.5 million digital copies

in South Korea.

While "Boombayah" became the group's

first number one hit

on the Billboard World Digital Song sales chart.

The group continued their success with the release

of "Square Two" later in the year,

which peaked at number two on the World Albums chart.

The single, "Playing With Fire" reached number three,

and sold more than 2.5 million digital copies again

in South Korea.

BLACKPINK's success skyrocketed.

The girls move away from cute and very feminine songs

to an entirely new and powerful concept

seem to be working with fans,

not just in Korea, but also across the border.

In 2017, BLACKPINK showed no sign of slowing down.

The group released the dance and reggae single,

"As If It's Your Last,"

which peaked at number three,

alongside making their Japanese debut

with the EP, "BLACKPINK."

The translation of their songs into Japanese

resulted in BLACKPINK breaking new borders

and capturing the attention of more and more screaming fans.

Critics have often commented on the repetitive nature

of BLACKPINK's title tracks.

However, with the music producer, Teddy Park,

as their backbone, BLACKPINK has been able

to incorporate elements

of both American and Korean music into their albums.

Their fandom, Blinks, continue to live by the formula

that is proven to go viral time and time again.

2018 proved to be another successful year

for Jennie, Jisoo, Rose, and Lisa.

The release of the single, "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du"

as part of the group's first Korean language EP,

"Square Up," massively showcased the group's ability

to blend multiple styles.

The number one single was the group's first song

to enter the US billboard Hot 100 at number 55,

making them the highest charting female Korean act

and the first to be certified gold in the country.

BLACKPINK have since collaborated

with some of the industry's biggest female artists.

Lady Gaga on "Sour Candy,"

Selena Gomez on "Ice Cream,"

and Dua Lipa on the track, "Kiss and Make Up."

The songs achieved worldwide commercial success

and propelled BLACKPINK to fame in western countries.

BLACKPINK's stylish flair,

and messages of female empowerment

now draw fans in from everywhere.

And there has been no sign of slowing down

for the four girls over the last couple of years.

On 26th of June, 2020,

BLACKPINK released the huge hit single,

"How You Like That" from their debut studio album,

called "The Album."

The song reached number 33 on the Billboard Hot 100,

tying with the group's collab with Lady Gaga

as the highest charting song by a female Korean act.

The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200

and broke the record for the best selling album

by a Korean female act of all time,

selling over 1 million copies in its first month.

The album soon became the highest charting album

by a female Korean act

as well as by a girl group since 2008.

BLACKPINK have continued to break record after record

with their 2022 album, "Born Pink."

It became the first number one album

by a K-pop girl group ever.

The album's pre-release single, "Pink Venom,"

expressed BLACKPINK's confidence and deadly charm.

Both the music video and the track itself

showcased a darker side to the girl group,

setting the group firmly apart

from their predecessors.

On April 4th, 2023,

YG Entertainment revealed the release

of the mobile game, "BLACKPINK: The Game."

The group's brand has now entered new territory

and even released a promotional single

named "The Girls" for the soundtrack.

BLACKPINK have consistently

reached new heights, not only as singers,

but as fashion icons, on screen personalities,

and brand ambassadors.

The K-pop sensation have broken numerous records

throughout their career so far.

Their Born Pink World Tour

became the highest grossing concert tour by a female group,

and they were the first ever Asian act

to headline Coachella in 2023.

On 25th of January, 2023,

France's first Lady, Brigitte Macron,

invited BLACKPINK to perform

at the French Hospital Gala concert.

The event is held annually, and this time,

BLACKPINK became the first K-pop group

to ever be invited by Macron,

proving their influence across the globe.

BLACKPINK have also made appearances on American TV,

even singing with James Corden

on his iconic "Carpool Karaoke."

And in late 2023,

King Charles III awarded BLACKPINK honorary member

of the Order of the British Empire medals

for their work in raising awareness about climate change,

BLACKPINK have achieved success

unlike that of any other music artists in history.

Their incredible journey from unknown idol group

to international super stardom has been an uphill battle,

but through their love for their craft,

their love for music, dancing, performance,

and their strong sisterly love for each other,

they have conquered the world.

There is no doubt BLACKPINK will continue

to inspire girls all over the world

with their edgy style and messages of empowerment.

The Korean Wave is shaping up to be an international storm.

The incredible surge of K-pop over recent years

has been accelerated by social media
