Why there's nothing in the whole wide, wonderful world so pretty as the sights and smell of

the forest on a spring morning.

A day for squirrels to scamper and crows to chatter and birds to chirp their heads off

and trees to scatter their leaves.

Long ago for you were born, the forest was a different place and Smokey didn't have

his name and no one knew his smiling face.

He was a very frightened cub and how he got that way and finally overcame his fears is

the tale you'll hear today.

This is the ballad of Smokey the Bear.

He snips the woodland for spoke-sanded air.

He is a legend in whole jingle land.

This is the ballad of someone that we all love.

Smokey the Bear runs everywhere.

Forest fires are his only care.

I never thought our simple life would change so suddenly.

But it was getting late.

A fire spreads awfully fast.

I could see that it was already passing through that part of the woods where Smokey was.

And it was coming straight at me.

I realized that only a miracle could save Smokey.

Well, I ducked under a rock and waited.

Until the fire passed.

Until it was cruel and calm and then I got out of there fast.

The forest was so sad it cried it was a lonesome sight.

The lovely trees of yesterday now cold and black at night.

There wasn't much that I could do but wish that some were saved.

So I set out after Smokey with hope.

My road was paved.

Sunny?

Come on down, Sonny. The fire's gone.

He was such a frightened little bear that for a long, long time after that fire,

I couldn't even get him to leave the cave.

Any loud noise frightened him.

And of course, I think that terrified him most was fire.

He is in that way now, Pop.

He talks to everyone, and everyone loves him.

And he isn't afraid of anything.

Yes, it's a strange and wonderful story.

How he changed from a frightened, lonely little cub to what he is now.

We were taking a stroll that day.

Smokey had grown into a fine young bear.

But still, he had that fear in it.

I was the only one he'd talk to.

Smell that sweet ass, smoky.

Lovely, isn't it?

It took a long time.

But the forest is green and cool and beautiful again.

I never saw any tracks like these before.

Wonder what it is.

Whatever it is, he doesn't like it either.

Well, I was moving along, minding my own business when this thing sneaked up.

Behind me and grabbed me.

Of course, I closed up sharks immediately.

But what do you think this creature did?

He picked me up and dashed me to the ground, trying to crack me open.

That's pretty mean.

He's so mean he ought to resign from the animal kingdom.

If he is an animal, I hope we've seen the last of him.

What's going on here?

Horraneous thing that ever happened to me.

I was here doing a little quiet hunting when something grabs my tail.

I don't allow anyone to do that except the Mrs.

and I thought it was her getting a little playful.

Then I turned and saw it.

Saw what? I don't know. I saw it for only a second.

Never saw anything like it before.

Something furry and big and smelly.

Those strange tracks were easy enough to follow because everywhere they went they left a trail of destruction.

It was at clearing the forest, it had planted with seedlings.

But there wasn't any reason to this.

This was just waste and destruction, senseless and malicious.

We realized that evil had come into our wilderness home.

We were joined by other animals whose homes had been destroyed by the mysterious monster.

The tracks led straight to a deserted old trapper's hut in the woods.

Whatever it is, it's in there.

One of us will have to sneak up to that hut and take a look inside.

A human trained gorilla as mean as he could be who couldn't tell a stapling from a weeping below tree.

He'd never seen our forest or the animals around. He only cared about himself.

Our's were the foreign ground.

The first thing I had to do was take care of smoking.

When he smelled that smoke, he was so frightened.

He climbed that tree and hung on there just like he did when he was caught in the fire.

The other animals had run away.

Come on down, Smokey.

He can't hurt us. The two of us can handle him.

I saw him keep looking at that chimney and I realized that Smokey wasn't afraid of the gorilla.

There's much as he was of the smoke.

There's no more smoke now, Smokey.

Look what he's doing now. He's poisoning that stream. Clean water is scarce around here.

What's he up to now?

He's going to set the forest a fire.

We've got to get rid of him, Smokey. We've got to get all our friends together and figure out what to do.

We just took a drink from the stream a little while ago and we all got sick.

We have a problem here that we're going to tackle right now.

This gorilla is polluting the streams, destroying the dams, pulling up the ceilings,

and he's going to end up by setting the forest a fire.

We have got to get rid of him.

I've got a collection of traps in my dam that were used against me without success.

I made a sort of hobby of collecting them, and I figured out what's wrong with each one of them.

Now, by combining them, I can work something out that'll get this gorilla.

while I'm hidden safely in the bushes.
