- Is it Sally Field? Is she dead? (MAN CHUCKLES EERILY)
- WOMAN WHISPERS: Faith, trust... and pixie dust.
- ...rejected my visa. (WARPED, EERIE VOICES)
(APPLAUSE) This is an amateur company.
- Impress me!
(MUSIC BOX TINKLES)
- Tap, tap.
- So will you... (MAN LAUGHS)
...be my...
(CACOPHONY)
(VOCALISES)
- Don't bugger it up.
- Charlie's gonna help with the show! (MAN CHUCKLES)
(VOICES ECHO, FADE)
- So, are you, like, the, um...
associate director?
- Uh, well, the role's not entirely defined at present.
- He's an expert consultant. - But much more hands-off.
- So no touching. (CHUCKLES)
- Coach? - Colleague?
- Fairy godmother.
- Mentor. - Idol?
- Mm. - Slaves, stop distracting the intern.
On stage now!
- You're all doing beautiful work.
(ALL CHUCKLE QUIETLY)
- Morning.
- You know, this whole number needs to butch up, hmm?
That goes for you too, ladies. - Um, would you like me to stand in for Helen for the next bit?
- Oh, that's a wonderful idea.
- We have a perfectly acceptable box. Thank you, Mia.
Right, one, two, three acting. Start acting.
(MARCHING PIANO ACCOMPANIMENT PLAYS)
- The kings have been requested.
Paris will be bested.
- ALL: We will uphold our oath.
Let's go. We'll get them...
- It's not the Lacrimosa. Pick up the pace!
(MUSIC QUICKENS)
- The army's been assembled. Watch the Trojans tremble.
- ALL: We will uphold our oath.
Let's go. We'll get them both.
(ACCOMPANIMENT CONTINUES)
- I just - (SPLUTTERS) What the?
- I think I think it it... it might be a little fast.
- What is she saying? Speak up, girl!
You're not behind enemy lines.
- I just think...
I just think it might be a little fast.
- Oh, quiet in the cheap seats. (CLEARS THROAT)
Ah, Charlie. Charlie! Act one, scene one
I want all the men
covered in gold.
- I'm already on it.
(WHIMSICAL RINGTONE PLAYS)
- Uh, sorry. No I'm I'm sorry.
- Who dares bring a phone into my rehearsal room?!
ROARS: Out, damned spot!
Out!

(DOG BARKS IN DISTANCE)
- ON PHONE: So you weren't fired? - As I said on my email, I loved working on Cats.
The producers and I just had creative differences.
- And it had nothing to do with this Sally Field incident?
- Well, as
(CLEARS THROAT) as much as I'd love to completely deny that, I signed an NDA, so legally...
No, what I need from you is help with my visa appeal.
(WOMEN CHAT INDISTINCTLY)
I mean, I have musicals in development with Lincoln Center and Second Stage, so yes,
I guess you could say I'm a pretty big deal.
(SLAP!)
(CLEARS THROAT) No, they're not actual jobs. You're right. Uh...
Pizazz, yes. An incredible organisation.
Very well-run.
Uh...
Oh, well, no, I guess you'd call them the finest...
large-scale yet boutique...
classical musical theatre company in Tauranga?
(ZAP!) - Ow!
- That's what I was meaning by 'hazard'.
- Oh, um, I would be the artistic director.
Uh... (CLEARS THROAT)
And if they didn't have a website?
No Well, no, Pizazz does, obviously.
I was more worried about other people.
Uh, I'll talk to you soon. Um, bye.
Uh, excuse me.
You busy?
- Yeah No, (CHUCKLES) I'm totally free. What do you need?
- Every suggestion I make seems to be wrong.
- Oh, he's like that with me. Oh, it's just his way of nurturing talent.
- Adrian. Here it is.
- Oh, finally!
- (CHUCKLES LIGHTLY)
- So, do you think maybe I should say something?
- Adrian's an incredibly collaborative director. He loves feedback.
- I said no questions.
Now... (EXCLAIMS INDISTINCTLY) (CROP WHACKS)
- We are so lucky to have him.
(SHOES CLIP-CLOP, CHARIOT CREAKS)
(WHEELS SQUEAK) (CHUCKLES)
(GIGGLES)
(CURIOUS MUSIC)
(THUD!) - Ooh! Oh.
- Excuse me.
Sorry. Just leave it there. That's OK.
- Oh. Still smells the same.
- I'm rearranging the whole room based on era, not theme. So...
we start with medieval Camelot there, 19th-century British work here,
and we finish in the middle with Starlight Express.
- You're doing God's work. - Oh, it's nothing big.
This is what we'll use. - Great. Thanks. (CLEARS THROAT)
And, you know, the website doesn't have to be big. Just has to show me working at Pizazz.
- How about this for your profile pic?
- Oh.
A bit formal.
- OK.
(HUMS QUIETLY)
(CURIOUS MUSIC CONTINUES)
Too much?
- (CHUCKLES)
- Oh.
Iconic.
- Triggering. - Absolutely. Um... just options.
- And you can make me the... the website?
- Of course. I'm 17.
- Oh.
QUIETLY: Very young.
(MARCHING PIANO ACCOMPANIMENT PLAYS) - The kings have been requested. Paris will be bested.
- CHORUS: We will uphold our oath.
Let's go. We'll get them both. (CAMERA CLICKS)
- Ezra! (PIANO STOPS)
What the hell are you doing?
- Oh, we were just getting some rehearsal stills.
That's how we do things in New York, but...
- Well, in Tauranga, the stage is here,
Ezra, in case you've forgotten. (CHUCKLES)
(CAMERA CLICKS)
Well, get on with it, girl. (PIANO ACCOMPANIMENT RESUMES)
- The army's been assembled. Watch the Trojans tremble.
We will uphold our oath.
- Don't do this, no. - Let's go. We'll get them both.
- You cannot go.
- Stop, stop, stop, stop. (MUSIC STOPS)
Why is she singing?
- Um, because this
this is when Cassandra tells the slaves about her dream about the the coming fall of Troy.
- Nobody...
wants to hear from Cassandra.
- Charlie.
What do you think?
- What are you asking the intern for?
- Oh, just whatever Adrian thinks. - Oh, Little Miss Broadway agrees with me.
Well, we're done with all that singalong stuff. I want to see the wrestling.
Everyone pair up.
SING-SONGY: Connor. You're with me!
(QUIRKY MUSIC)
- Gloria? - Mm?
- Would you mind moving out of the way? Just cos...
Thanks. (CLEARS THROAT)
(QUIRKY MUSIC CONTINUES)
(CAMERA CLICKS)
- Yeah. Yeah.
(GRUNTING) - Oh!
(CAMERA CLICKS, GRUNTING CONTINUES)
(SOFT, POIGNANT MUSIC)
- I didn't realise Helen had so little to do.
It's mainly a show about men arguing.
- Well, I am grateful to have you. - And after this, I want the full story on your friend Sally field.
- Um, Ezra, how we doing?
- Uh, yeah. We're good. - OK.
- Oh, should I introduce myself to camera?
- No, no. It's just a little behind-the-scenes kind of thing
something to make the website more dynamic. - Oh. Got it.
Director and actor...
getting stuck into the work. (BOTH CHUCKLE)
- Exactly. - Oh, and stop me whenever you want.
Honestly, don't go easy on me just because we're filming.
- Hmm.
- And... (BEEP!) ...rolling.
- (HUMS, TRILLS TONGUE)
Rrrah!
(INHALES SHARPLY)
POSH ENGLISH ACCENT: Priam!
Priam!
The walls have been breached!
(WHIMPERS) The city...
shall fall tonight.
(SOBS DRAMATICALLY)
Priam!
SOBS: Priam!
(INHALES DEEPLY)
- OK.
- CHUCKLES: OK.
- Wow. The English accent are we wedded to that? - Oh, well,
Helen's a classical character, so she needs an English accent. - Mm-hm. Mm-hm. Yes.
OK, well, why don't we try the next one without it? - (CHUCKLES)
Uh, sure.
Sure. Of course. Mm. Yeah. You're the director.
(EXHALES SLOWLY, HUMS QUIETLY)
(SIGHS)
SOFTLY: Priam, the walls...
the walls have been breached.
TENSELY: The city...
shall... fall...
tonight.
OK. Cut. - Ha.
- (CHUCKLES) See, I just I don't think that works...
for the audience. - Mm. Right.
Um, all right. For the next one, let's focus on objective.
You really need Priam to hear you.
- SHOUTS: Priam!
Priam! - But you are still Helen of Troy.
- HIGH-PITCHED: Priam!
Priam! - Who is a fully grown woman.
- GUTTURALLY: Priam! - OK, cut.
(BEEP!)
Great.
Great. I think we've got some excellent footage.
- What a range. (CHUCKLES)
- SOFTLY: Yeah.
This has been so much fun.
(PENCIL SCRATCHES)
(QUIRKY MUSIC)
- OK. So...
what's it made out of? - These are toilet rolls, a tissue box.
And this...
my late mother's ponytail.
- I was meaning the finished product. - Well, you're the builder.
- I'm an electrician. - Mm.
(BEEP!) - I think we should fly the horse in, maybe on a bed of dry ice.
- We've got $167 to make the horse.
- Mm. Good to know.
- Look, she's not Lady Diana. Put your phone away!
- If it's too hard to have a huge horse, why don't we use a metaphorical one?
Use that to challenge - And why don't we do
the Titanic musical without a ship?!
Leave the set design to your director, please.
Just tell me you can make it.
- Gloria deserves a huge horse.
I can try. - Finally.
Like pulling teeth. (BEEP!)
(SOFT, POIGNANT MUSIC)
- Connor, great work. Have you got time for an interview?
I'd love to hear more about your big horse.
- Wanna see it?
(MUSIC FADES)
- Is there a way to make Pizazz look slightly bigger?
(DOOR CREAKS OPEN) - Oh, I could add an extra Z.
(DOOR CLOSES)
- (SIGHS) Oh. What are you doing here, cookie?
- (CLEARS THROAT) I'm just helping Ezra with his... maths homework.
- But you can't do maths. (CHUCKLES) - Well, it's more of a pastoral role.
- Right. Ezra, could you go to the school hall and get Gloria, please?
Adrian wants to rehearse the battle scene. - Oh, how do you know she's there?
- Oh, I've got all my key creatives on Find My. (CHUCKLES)
Quickly. Adrian's starting to shout. - Oh, no. Ezra really needs to focus on his homework.
- Yes, and we really need Gloria. Now, darling.
- And I need Ezra... doing his maths. (DOOR CREAKS OPEN) - Oh.
So, piano girl's just gone, has she?
I am surrounded by amateurs.
Charlie, get on stage. You need to stand in for the horse.
- (SNORTS) Absolutely not.
Because... I'm going to the school to find Gloria.
Aren't I, Mum? - Mm-hm.
- I'll check over that long division when I get back.
- WHISPERS: He can't do maths.
(DOOR CLOSES)
(CURIOUS, TINKLY MUSIC)
(MUSIC ENDS)
(GENTLE PIANO MUSIC PLAYS FAINTLY)
(DOOR CLOSES)
- GLORIA SINGS: What a thing to happen
and not be free to share it.
What a curse to have a voice that no one gets to hear it.
What a waste is wisdom...
if no one hears you out.
(PLAYS EMOTIVE ACCOMPANIMENT)
You try to warn them, but no one will receive you.
You wanna tell the truth, but no one will believe you.
You foretell the future,
but they can't hear you shout.
I could stop floods.
I could stop wars.
I could stop death,
destruction and harm.
I could save lives,
like thousands more
if only people
would hear the alarm. (MUSIC BUILDS)
So I scream into the void... (PIANO MUSIC SOARS)
...even though they cannot hear me.
I scream into the void.
Is it maybe that they fear me?
(MUSIC SOFTENS)
I just pray one day...
that somebody might listen
to what I say.
(CONTINUES PLAYING SOFTLY)
(MUSIC ENDS)
Aah! (LOW NOTES SLAM DISCORDANTLY) Oh, you've...
Why do you keep doing that?
- To be fair, you do startle quite easily.
I've come to bring you back to rehearsals. Also, you should disable your Find My.
- Oh, Adrian doesn't want me at rehearsals.
- Adrian doesn't want anyone at rehearsals, but as the music director, you're kind of important.
- Well, you don't think I'm important.
- What does that mean?
- Well, you didn't stand up for me today in rehearsals.
- I don't even remember you being at rehearsals.
- Just like Adrian.
- Excuse me. (SCOFFS) I am nothing like Adrian.
- You... are a director. You're all the same.
- No, wait. Stop, Gloria. I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
What was that you were playing?
Is it one of yours?
- It's...
It's nothing.
- You used a minor 4 chord on the 'listen to what I say'...
- Yeah.
- ...because no one's listening to her.
- Yeah.
- Smart.
(SOFT PIANO MUSIC)
- It's, um...
It's one of Cassandra's songs from the original.
- The... original?
(SUSPENSEFUL TONE)
(CURIOUS, QUIRKY MUSIC)
This is a whole other show.
- Adrian didn't wanna do my version, so he kind of...
Well, he wrote his own.
- He...?
(CURIOUS MUSIC CONTINUES)
All right. Let's have a listen.
(CLEARS THROAT)
All right. First things first.
What is it about?
- Well, it's about women.
Two women Helen... (PLAYS BRIGHT MUSICAL FLOURISH)
...the most beautiful woman in the world...
(PLAYS 'SCREAM INTO THE VOID' THEME)
...and Cassandra...
who's also great.
And how their destinies are intertwined in one of the most epic battles in all of history.
Cos Helen was married to Menelaus...
(PLAYS DARKER CHORDS) ...who's this complex, brooding guy with a short temper.
But then she meets Paris...
(BRIGHTER, UPLIFTING MUSIC)
...who is, you know, quite...
handsome. And she immediately falls in love, like she doesn't have a choice. It was just her destiny.
And she tries to play it cool, (STOPS PLAYING) but he's just so...
hot.
(PLAYS WHIMSICAL TUNE) And so she dumps Menelaus...
(POP! DING!)
...and marries Paris, and they go back to Troy,
where they meet his mum, Hecuba,
who's also your mum.
She's the queen of Troy and married to Priam. He's... pretty old...
but tall.
(DRAMATIC MUSIC)
As you can imagine, Menelaus loses his temper and vows revenge...
and orders Odysseus to go and find the Greek warrior Achilles,
who was the bravest fighter in all the land.
(DRAMATIC MUSIC PAUSES, RESUMES)
And then there's fighting that goes on for, like, 10 years,
and then a horse appears, and the Spartans are hiding inside.
Cassandra tries to warn the Trojans, but nobody listens.
And then there's an ambush and another huge battle,
and pretty much everyone dies.
- Ugh! - Ugh! - Ooh!
- Agh! - Ugh! - Aargh!
- And then there's a megamix, and everyone goes crazy. There's confetti and a disco ball.
Everyone's super happy, even the dead ones.
And then there's a big final chord.
OPERATICALLY: Troy!
(DRAMATIC MUSIC ENDS)
(SEAT CREAKS QUIETLY)
What do you think?
(SNARE DRUM ROLLS)
(DOOR CLOSES)
- Sir, master...
lord and saviour. - I need a roll of blue taffeta. We're creating the Aegean Sea.
- Yes, of course. Just one moment.
(FOOTSTEPS RETREAT)
(CURIOUS MUSIC)
- What's this?
- That That is just, um, a little school project I'm working on.
- About Charlie?
- Yeah, um, it's about...
immigration.
(MUSIC CONTINUES)
- If you don't tell me what's going on, I'm going to skin you alive.
- What is it about?
- It's about gods and... women
and a city and a horse.
- No. What is it about?
- It's about Helen, who has this friend, Cassandra, but they're not really friends.
- No, what is it actually about?
- A battle in ancient history - No, Gloria, what is it about?!
- It's about fate.
(ETHEREAL TONE)
- Yeah.
(QUIRKY MUSIC)
- Oh.
- It's just... a website for his visa.
His immigration lawyer said it would strengthen his appeal.
- Oh, well, there you go. Case closed. (CHUCKLES)
- It makes it look as though he's the director.
- Yeah, but everyone knows that you're the only one that's directed anything at Pizazz. Ever.
- I just happen to be right for every project.
- Yeah, and Charlie's just helping out until his visa comes through.
He tells me that 20 times a day. - You believe him?
- I believe everyone. - You mark my words, Gaye.
That little Brutus...
wants to stab me in the back.
(QUIRKY MUSIC CONTINUES, ENDS)
- So, what do we do now?
- We do your show.
(POIGNANT, SOARING MUSIC BUILDS)
- So I scream into the void...
even though they cannot hear me.
I scream into the void.
Is it maybe that they fear me?
I just pray one day...
that somebody might listen
to what I say.
