And we're having A swap meet for frags,

Which is a coral That people take.

They cut them into small pieces And actually sell them.

This saves the environment

So they're not going Into the ocean.

They're actually Growing it at home,

Which is great for conservation.

People come from all over.

I mean, we're gonna probably see Anywhere from 500

To 1,000 people Throughout the day.

Today, we probably have Somewhere in the neck

Of 30 different vendors.

There's just a lot Of cool people here.

There's everything From fish food to products

To live coral to fish. You name it --

There's a famous guy Over there.

Well, I recognize That he's famous.

That's a boxer. That's fernando vargas.

Fernando vargas staked his claim As a boxing legend

When he knocked out his first Opponent in less than a minute.

He's gone up against many Greats, like oscar de la hoya.

Out of his 31 total fights, He won 26 of them,

And he held the world Championship title

Between 1998 and 2000.

Today, he has a boxing gym

Serving underprivileged youth

In north las vegas.

So, today is actually like A swap meet for coral.

Let me show you Some of this stuff, champ.

Let me show you this right here. These are my buddies.

This is jimmy and josh.

So, what these guys did is, They have grown big pieces,

And what they do is, People come from all over,

And a lot of these Are really rare.

And I can touch them, And they won't bite me?

Josh: yeah go ahead, man. You can reach in

-and touch anything you want. -are you sure?

-absolutely, man. -I don't want to start fighting

And then, you know --

-get in there, get in there. -[ growls ]

Agnes: I knew you were gonna do it!

Ah, I was, like, thinking, "I don't know.

What if they bite me?"

It's okay for fernando vargas To touch these corals,

Because these corals Aren't gonna sting him,

And also, him touching them Will not hurt the animals.

Josh: These are pretty rare.

All this stuff is all grown. It's all captive.

We 100% aquaculture Everything,

So we're not taking stuff in And out of the ocean, you know?

So it's all -- basically Everything's homegrown.

What does a piece Like that cost?

It can range Anywhere from $20

All the way up To like $1,000.

So how big Do these things get?

Some of the acroporas and stuff, When you're in the ocean,

Can get all the way up to, Like, the size of cars.

-I mean, there's... -wow.

There's pieces that are Dinner-plate sized.

Fernando, this is a trip,

Because I remember Watching you with my dad.

I would walk three miles As a 12-year-old kid --

It would take me one hour --

To the hood to train To learn the art of boxing.

There's kids out there that Need it, just like I needed it.

I was locked up In juvenile hall,

And one day when I was suspended From school for fighting,

And I saw amateur boxing,

And I said, "I could do this. I know I could do this."

Nothing was gonna stop me.

We're giving inner-city kids A fighting chance.

We have four different Champions here,

My younger brother, that are Ranked in the country.

Ranked number-one In the country.

And my dad's Training all of us.

We're gonna put stuff That's gonna be compatible.

So I have to get him up to date On our newest project.

So, we just came back From fernando's gym.

Let me tell you what I sold him. Are you ready?

So, listen, I got this All figured out.

First, we're gonna have A 3 1/2-foot-tall steel stand.

Then we're gonna build a 4-foot Tall, 3 1/2-foot long tank.

Then we're gonna punch it Inside of a 9-foot-tall

Red leather boxing glove facade.

We'll build the front Of the tank

To make it match The curves of the gloves,

And we'll put vargas's logo Right in the center.

He also wants aggressive Saltwater fish,

And his son really wants A harlequin tusk,

And with 450 gallons, There's plenty of room.

So, don't you think it's Gonna be a total knockout?

It's just a lot That has to go into this,

Like the glove. We've never done it.

It'll be first, one of A kind, in the world.

So we definitely Got a lot to do.

First step -- we have To get redneck on board

With the facade.

Okay, so, we're gonna Make the aquarium

In the shape Of a boxing glove.

-there you go, red. -a boxing glove?

-yes. -do you know how hard that is?

Think about that. You gonna build a glove

With the acrylic Shaped like this?

That's ridiculous.

That's not the idea. What we're gonna do --

It's obviously not gonna be The entire glove.

It's gonna be Part of the glove.

Does that make More sense to you?

Part of the glove -- Which part of the glove?

I don't know. That's what We're here to figure out.

It's got to be As realistic as possible.

Maybe that's something You can figure out.

So, I got this little guy At the frag swap.

-for what? -because I'm interested

In setting up a reef tank, And I asked victor to help us.

-oh, that's cool. -I know.

So he's gonna show us The ins and outs.

-hey, victor. -hi, girls. How you doin'?

-good. -hi, victor.

-here's my birdsnest. -ooh, yeah, that's nice.

-right? Isn't it cool? -yeah.

So, I wanted to learn Everything there is

About setting up A reef tank.

You have a few years?

I know it's a very Intricate process, but...

So you kind of want A crash course?

-yes. -first thing that you always do

Is you acclimate it. You want to Set it inside the tank, okay,

And let it float around. About 30 minutes.

-just like fish, right? -just like fish.

What you also need To do is to check

And see what the ph Level is, okay?

Ph levels have to be A little higher on reef tanks.

The higher the better.

What happens if I put This little guy in,

And the ph Was too low, you know?

It would slowly Deteriorate and die.

-aw. -yeah.

So that's why It's very important

To make sure the ph level Is checked

Pretty much daily.

What we're gonna do is, We're gonna actually have to put

This high-range ph in there

To see what It comes out to be.

And then you count, one, Two, three, four, five.

One, two, Three, four, five.

All right, awesome. And then you shake it up.

Whoa, okay. This is terrible. This is low.

-oh, yeah, mine -- look at mine. -that's more gold.

Look at mine, heather. It's right there.

Yeah, it's low.

So, we want these Parameters right here.

8.2 is good.

So do we have to, obviously, Put in chemicals

To raise the ph level?

Yes, there is a chemical That you can use.

It's actually A buffer, okay?

It will help raise The ph level on there,

Because the plants Will take the nutrients

Out of there And lower your ph.

Oh, okay, so the plants are Actually sucking up the ph.

-plants, fish, everything. -oh, okay. No, I didn't know.

-all right. -okay.

For a little, Small tank like this,

Just a little cap full like this Is more than enough, okay?

Now you watch the action on it As I pour it into the water.

-oh, it's cloudy. -yeah, it is.

That's the action of the water Being diluted with the buffer.

Okay, cool, so now we just got To let it cycle through.

So now we just got To let it cycle through

For about an hour or so.

And I can leave My little guy in here?

You can just leave him right There. He'll be fine. Sure.

Wayde: We already got the bow-front Panel molded in the oven.

Chuy's testing it. It's solid,

And they're ready to start Gluing it all together.

Chris.Chris is a new employee at atm,

So I like to teach him The ropes from the beginning

So we don't make any mistakes,

And it doesn't cost A lot of money.

Come on. We got to go show you About gluing. Come on.

Each panel's A little different than others,

-so I want to teach you. -okay.

Oh, look, they started. Come on.

-how we doin', chuy? -okay.

Going a little crazy On this thing, huh?

When the piece comes Out of the oven,

It has to be cut exactly, So when it comes out,

And you're ready to glue, Everything lines up.

Listen, what we do Is we do a template.

We mark everything On the template,

And then we know exactly Where to cut everything.

They're gonna wipe this down, Get all the impurities out.

If you left any of that dust And dirt on there,

It'll trap the oxygen

And give you bubbles Throughout the whole piece.

And once it's prepped, you Never touch it with your hands.

Because of the oils?

The oil will sit there, And it traps the bubbles,

And you can't get them out Once you're gluing.

So they prep it with tape.

They make a little channel That holds the glue.

Then they lower it down.

The seam sits in that channel, And it glues.

See these clamps we made? They're cut out

So the glue doesn't stick To that in the piece.

They're easy to pop off All the way down.

So now this piece matches This angle exactly.

This is gonna sit and dry.

And once this dries, We're gonna take it and flip it

And do the same thing On this seam.

When you do that side,

That's the last And one shot you got to do,

'cause if you mess that up, You got to redo everything.

It's not as easy As everybody thinks.

Mike: we got a problem. Working on vargas,

And the wet/dry and the chiller Won't fit underneath the stand.

Trying to puzzle-piece it in. It's not gonna fit.

We're building A boxing-glove tank

For world champ fernando vargas.

It's going in his gym Here in vegas

Where he trains Underprivileged youth.

The acrylic has been Glued together,

And we painted the tank blue to Give it an endless ocean effect.

And we decided to replicate Fernando's first belt medallion

As a surprise for him Inside the tank.

And finally, heather and I Are water-testing

The leather we picked out For the glove facade

To see which one will work best.

So, let's leave it here for A while, and we'll come back.

We got a problem. Working on vargas,

And the wet/dry and the chiller Won't fit underneath the stand.

-okay? -so I've tried

Every configuration, Trying to puzzle-piece it in.

It's not gonna fit. Wet/dry's too big.

All right, well let's go Out there. We'll make it work.

-okay. -we'll figure it out.

Let's see what We got going on.

The wet/dry and the chiller Are part of the plumbing

And life-support system.

It filters out toxic Ammonia and nitrates.

Then it sends clean filtered Water back into the tank.

And the chiller keeps the water Cooled in this vegas heat.

So, we built it to have An internal skimmer.

So the skimmer's Gonna go on the wet/dry.

But as you can tell, there's Just not enough room.

All right, you know what? Pull All the equipment out for now.

Okay.

Let's pop the sub vent Through the side.

I can't see how all This is gonna fit.

It's not.

We got too much stuff to go In there and not enough room.

Can we put The chiller outside?

Well, the only way To put it outside would be,

You'd have to drill Through the concrete

Or run the pipes along The floor to the outside,

And I don't think that's Gonna work in the gym,

With the kids running around, All the piping on the floor.

What about behind?

So, behind it, I believe It's a kitchen,

And I don't think there's Room in the kitchen.

I don't know. Let me call wayde

And see what he had In mind, man.

It doesn't even Sound like him.

And the wet/dry's so big,

You can't even fit The chiller inside the stand.

All right, so, the tank's Not going all the way flush

-up against the wall. -okay, so we have room behind?

You've got a little bit Of room behind it,

And the chiller Was gonna go next to it,

So why don't you move One of the pumps behind it,

And then move the chiller Right to the east --

To the right side of it.

Wayde's idea was To cover the chiller

With some sort of steps

So kids can have a photo op Next to the tank.

Dude, that's it. Steps.

The kids can climb up. They can Take pictures next to vargas.

They can see the tank. They can stand next to the tank.

And it'll cover All the filtration. We're good.

Agnes: at the frag swap, I was Inspired to get a piece of coral

And try fragging,

And I asked our resident Frag expert

To help me cut My first piece of coral.

Heather, how's it coming along?

Perfect timing. I'm checking it right now.

I know, I brought Big mike with me.

-what do you got here? -the ph was low.

We added buffer, And now...

-it's perfect! -...It is lookin' pretty good.

-look at that! -that's where you want it.

So, you know, big mike Was at the frag swap,

And he's the expert Of experts of fragging.

Fragging is a responsible way To raise corals.

You can share and grow Many new pieces of coral

While keeping Your mother colony.

This process allows us to pull

Fewer and fewer pieces From the ocean.

So what do we got to do?

We've got to cut it.

-does that not hurt it? -nope.

As long as you do it gentle And you cut in the right spot.

These are frag plugs.

So when we cut the coral, We'll glue the frags onto here.

You find a little spot In the rock

And stick them in there.

How do you know Where it's safe to cut?

It all depends on the coral. All corals have mouths.

So some corals, you don't want To cut through the mouth.

-you've got to cut around it. -this is a birdsnest coral.

So on this one, If you look,

Every one of those Little circles,

Every one of those dots,

Each one of those Is a mouth.

Wait, so all the little white Parts here or all the dots?

All the dots. And those Are all the individual mouths

That actually feed the colony.

It has so many mouths.

Where do you cut it without Cutting, like, a mouth?

There's so many mouths on here, And it's such a large colony

That this one, You can actually cut

Through the mouth, And it's fine,

And it will continue To grow and thrive.

-wow. -okay, so what we have to do

Is we have to find A good spot.

You want to have A nice, good surface

When you glue it To the frag plug.

-huh, that wasn't too bad. -what we're gonna do is,

We're just gonna take A little bit of our glue.

Gonna put some right there.

And there we go.

Now we can take this

And put it anywhere In the tank.

How long will it take Before this starts growing?

-right away. -that's cool.

To see if they would Get damaged.

They're all messed up.

And the color has changed.

It's all wrinkled, Like irwin.

What are we gonna do?

Well, did you get Marine-grade leather?

Did you know there was A marine-grade leather?

-there's a marine-grade leather? -yes.

They use marine-grade leather on Boat seats and stuff like that.

Oh, that makes sense.

They add a chemical To the leather

To help keep it soft, pliable, And resist water.

Well, we didn't do that.

My idea.

We got our hands on some Marine-grade leather,

And our friend rick At tanus cabinets

So that they could add on Fernando's logo for the base.

How great is it To get out of the office?

The fish That come to my mind

Is the cuban isle Emperor angelfish.

This one has really Unique markings.

Yeah, they have, like, Concentric rings.

So, you see, there's a ring And then another ring on top.

-I like this fish. -oh, that is cool.

It looks like an eye.

Yeah, that's what I was gonna say.

Is that for protection?

Yeah. Like that eye spot

That several fish Get at the bottom of their body.

So, these rings Are actually gonna fade

And become sprayed lines That you see in the adult fish.

But it does grow to a full size Of about a foot and a half,

-almost. -wow.

So you can put More than one in?

At this age, maybe, If you have a big tank.

But when they are adult fish, They become more territorial.

'cause you know what it is? He's the king of the tank,

So he's sort of like the champ.

So you put another one in, And he's gonna beat you down.

Really cool, little fish Right here.

-oh, wow. -this is a blue boxfish.

-that is so cool. -I love boxfish.

Yeah, this is the male,

So the males are the ones That get that purple/blue color.

The markings on it Are so crazy.

-yeah. -it looks like a puzzle almost.

-it's a beautiful-looking fish. -yes.

Little bit of A difficult fish to keep,

Because when they are Stressed out,

They release a toxin that can Kill out all the other fish

That are staying With them, so...

It reminds me of wayde. When he's really stressed out...

-he's toxic? -he is very toxic.

That's true.

There are different Varieties of boxfish?

Yes, there's several Different kinds of boxfish.

Yeah, we put boxfish into A tank before, a cowfish.

Ah, the longhorn cowfish, I remember that.

Those do release toxins, As well, when they're stressed,

But it's not that potent.

But this one, the levels Are really strong, so...

You have to be very --

Monitoring this fish closely, That's all.

So each boxfish has Different toxic levels?

Yeah, there's several Different species,

So some of them are More toxic than others.

That's a shame, 'cause it's so pretty.

-it's a pretty-looking fish. -that's why it's the most toxic.

I guess since we can't have him In vargas' tank,

We should go look at What you wanted to show us.

I think this would be A really good addition --

The goldflake angel.

-oh. -this is a rare, rare angel.

I mean, they are not available In the aquarium trade

It's a very new addition, Actually.

Yeah, they have A very nice looking color.

The body looks beautiful.

It's got that, like, a gold dust All over its body.

It has some black, And if you look in the mouth,

It's like electric blue Kind of mouth.

If you look at it, It looks like a trophy, right?

It does. Absolutely. You know what it reminds me of?

-the golden gloves. Right? -right.

I think this would be A really good addition.

-what do they eat? -they have a varied diet,

So they will do A little bit of seaweed.

They do eat sponges In the wild and corals,

So they are not reef safe.

But for a fish-only system, It's a great addition.

He said he doesn't Want coral, so we're fine.

That's definitely A knockout, right?

Definitely. He is the winner.

This one is actually A tough fish.

-it's a blue jaw trigger. -I love the blue jaw.

This guy's a male Of the species,

So that's the reason why you see That blue streak on the mouth.

The females Don't have that.

It looks like he got punched In the face, like an uppercut.

Believe me, this one can Definitely fight back, as well.

They're are Very fast swimmers.

They are able to move each eye Independently, actually.

-oh, wow. That looks creepy. -they're always looking.

That's cool, huh? It's like a perfect predator.

They have very strong jaws, Sharp teeth.

Their mouth is actually made For crushing crustaceans

And eating them.

That is very cool.

We'll also take A harlequin tusk to go.

His son really wants one.

That you can actually climb up, Sit down, you can feed it,

But we have a chiller Under there

That actually keeps The fish nice and cool

So they're not getting Overheated and stuff like that.

Wow, yeah. 'cause it gets hot Here in vegas.

Yeah, those pumps heat up. You want to make sure

The temperature's Right for the fish.

You got custom L.E.D. Lighting.

Now, each one Of those corals,

They're actually molded From real corals,

And we had to place them, Hand-paint them,

And fit and make Everything blend

To get that depth look That you wanted.

Brett: Inside the aquarium,

We have over 30 different Kinds of fish, guys.

There's a red one in there. It's called a flame angel.

And those guys Are pygmy angels.

And those guys are gonna be The smallest of your angels

Inside the aquarium.

There's only one of those Inside there, champ.

Just like you. There's only One fernando vargas, right?

So you can't put Another one in there,

Because otherwise they'll fight.Oh, wow.

But what if we Want them to fight?

No, we don't want that. We don't want that, no.

So pretty much, it's the dad. It's like the dad, the king.

We want good stuff for the Community, community fish.

So, we also have Right over here,

We have also what's called The six bar angel,

And these guys are known to be A little bit aggressive.

In the ocean, when divers Come up to them,

They actually grunt In the water.

-wow. -pretty cool.

We have your fish, The harlequin tusk.

-yeah. -harlequin tusks,

These guys, They come from indonesia,

And they also come From australia.

But the australian ones, Which you have in there,

Have more vibrant orange,

And they also have Blue teeth,

So you can tell the different Between the indonesian one

And the australian one by The blue color of their teeth.

So, overall, you have Community fish,

And we think that the community Is absolutely love it.
