We wanted to create A calming atmosphere.

We weren't looking Into much of a reef.

We were thinking something else, Maybe.

Do you like bright colors?

Not in this facility here

With the low-tone, Earthly colors.

So, maybe we do Something freshwater.

I think, like, A creek or river --

Outdoors, woods, Mountainy theme would be great.

I think we can definitely bring Nature into the office.

A creek, a river, An outdoor theme?

It'll be An underwater forest.

What about Some live freshwater plants?

Live plants are great For an aquarium.

They help With the nitrogen cycle.

Plants are gonna eat The fish waste,

Which is gonna give you A healthy aquarium,

Plus they help keep the water Crystal, crystal clear.

And we can get them All different sizes

And literally make The whole thing look

Very, very outdoor, woodsy.

You're walking Through the forest, you see

All the plants And everything.

There are fish called discus.

They're freshwater fish.

Their natural colors are Soothing.

They're really beautiful. Relaxing for this office.

I think It'll be perfect.

And they love live plants. I like it.

It's not something That you see that often.

We've done Live-planted tanks before,

But nothing to this extreme -- An underwater forest.

Yeah. Hopefully we can pull it off.

Brett: for our ambitious Underwater forest,

We're gonna make A rectangular freshwater tank

That will blend in with The natural look of the office.

The plumbing for this job will Include a nitrate reactor

That is constantly keeping The level safe

For our discus fish And live plants.

We'll also install Specialized lighting

With spectrums that support Plant life

And enhance The color of the fish.

We've done organs before. A spine should be easy.

The different parts Of the spine.

We could actually make The different parts light up

And then label them,

So people could push, Like, you know, "Neck,"

And then the neck could Light up.

That'd be cool. You could do that?

We got two new jobs.

The first tank is for a group Of doctors in california.

They want An underwater-forest theme,

So they want all these plants To grow inside it.

We got to do Some landscaping.

We haven't done A freshwater discus tank.

Redneck, we need to make sure We get with aqua medic.

Make sure that they get Their specialized lighting

For freshwater plants.

They got those new units -- The t5s.

They got Like three different spectrums.

They're the bomb.

You're pretty excited there, Big guy.

I've been doing some research. I got it under control.

General: I have a beautiful backyard

With a garden And everything else,

So I have a green thumb, Although it looks --

So, the spine needs to be As real as possible.

It needs to be Anatomically correct.

Brett: Since you got this job,

And I know you got a lot Of skeletons in the closet,

So I figured what better person To get it than you?

If I can't find it in my closet, I'll go out to the desert.

Brett: the saltwater tank For dynamic spine will feature

A curved front panel that will Mimic the curve of a backbone.

It will sit in the wall Between two rooms

So it's viewable From the lobby and the gym.

We'll fix An anatomically-correct spine

In the coral insert And embed lights in it.

The lights will correspond To buttons outside the tank,

And when you press them,

The various parts of the spine Will light up.

I got a great deal On the skeleton for the tank.

Only problem -- Some assembly is required.

I guess these are Some of the ribs.

Certainly doesn't look like The chinese restaurant.

The guys in the shop are Getting to work on the tank.

To get the unique curve Of the dynamic spine tank,

We built a custom mold, Fired the acrylic in the oven,

And bent it into shape.

With the seams glued And the acrylic polished,

This tank is no slouch,

But because of its unique shape, We still have to test

The stability of the tank On the stand.

So, this is gonna cantilever Over into their office,

So when you walk in That front door,

This part's hanging over. Right.

Okay, my concern is If we build this steel stand

And we put it In that wall,

It's gonna be front heavy

And it's gonna want To pull forward.

All this water's gonna Pull it this way.

You see how easy That is to pull?

The water weighs 8.5 Per gallon.

We're gonna have water All over that public place.

It's gonna be Everywhere.

I don't think This is gonna work.

Since my co-workers don't have Any good ideas,

I got to come up With a solution by myself.

This is all gonna want To pull down.

I need to support this.

This is gonna need A steel lip

That's gonna come up

And catch The front of this tank.

If we don't support this, We're gonna have problems.

Once we do that, I think we'll be okay.

And get some steel plates To match this radius.

He's gonna have to bang it out, Make pieces to support this,

And it's gonna have to fit like A glove.

I decided to play A practical joke on frankie

And ask him To dispose them for me.

We've done live-planted tanks Before,

But not to this extreme.

I'm gonna take this on As a pet project.

I've done research,

And now it's on to phase two -- Testing.

I need to figure out

The exact thickness Of the substrate,

The full spectrum of the lights, And the nitrogen level

So I can get full growth For these plants.

There's a lot to this.

So, I just got a phone call From my girls,

And wayde was supposed To take them

To this gymnastics event.

He has not showed up.

If he's in there, I'm gonna kill him.

Casted the skeleton Into 100% aquarium-safe resin.

We got the lights Hooked up.

Ventral And posterior dorsal fins

To move through the water.

This wavy way to get around is

One of the most unique styles In the sea,

And it helps The niger trigger maneuver

Through tight coral reefs.

So, wayde's been obsessing Over the underwater-forest tank.

For his sanity and our sanity, I'm letting izzy take over.

He's an expert On underwater plants,

And he's gonna come up With the design.

Underwater forest, How we doing?

Doing great. I'm just planning it out.

How high are you gonna keep The actual gravel

For the substrate?

To create That illusion of depth,

I want to bank it up On the sides

And then come in Kind of sloped down.

We need A lot of plants in here

Because we want to show The depth of the tank.

That we'll do with Shorter plants in the front.

Right. Taller plants in the back.

So, the fish can swim, And discus love this stuff.

This whole side, we make A little cliff going down.

We got to get Some logs in there.

Yeah, The spines and their tail,

On those things.

They stick them out.

They'll slice you Right in half.

Definitely a powder blue. I love their color.

It's an herbivore, So you got to make sure

That you have Your greens in there.

What about A porcupine puffer?

You know How they have their spines?

They're known As the spiny puffer.

Perfect. We have some. Let's go take a look.

And that's the reason Why we can't get him --

'cause he'll catch All the other fish.

He's not gonna work In this tank,

All right, Here's the porcupines.

Well, you want spines.

They got spines All over their body.

It'll go perfect.

Those spines are For their protection

When they get to blow up,

Like some things we know Blow up.

Well, they're not The fastest-moving fish

In the sea, So they need something.

And I like the fact That they have,

Almost, like, human teeth, And that they can actually chomp

Snails and crabs And hard shells.

All right. We're not getting the angler,

So we'll get the powder blue.

We'll get the porcupine.

We'll bag them up, Get them off to vegas.

Back at the shop, Both tanks are on their way.

Denny. Denny: hey, what's going on?

Dynamic spine, the backbone Coral insert is fish safe,

And it's ready to go.

We have the lights wired In a watertight insert.

They'll come out of the top Of the spine,

Out of the aquarium To a power source.

We just need to test The lights.

What part's what, 'cause you know,

I don't know much About the backbone here.

[ chuckles ]

Well, I got them all labeled here,

So we'll start at the top.

The top is going to be The cervical.

Whoa! Look at that.

Here's the one I'm A little bit concerned about.

We'll take a look at it.

This would be the sacrum.

That's that piece Down at the bottom --

The disc-shaped piece Right above the little tail.

Humans have tails?

Yeah. My uncle cletus did.

Yeah, That's what I was worried about.

It's a little off center.

This is A one-part mold,

So what we had to do was

I had This entire skeleton molded.

Wayde: uh-huh.

And I created a bar That had the lights on it.

I had To stick that in there blind,

So the positioning was Kind of guesswork.

Maybe a little more light On this side.

Is it hard To cut this out?

It involves me getting in there With a roto tool,

Cutting that thing out, Repositioning it over,

Re-pouring the resin.

We still have To actually get this,

Set it in the coral insert.

We have to stand it So it's right and seal it.

We have to hide All these wires.

You have to go into surgery Right now, dude, seriously.

You, too.

Put on your mask, Your whatever --

Your sloppies or whatever They call those things

And get him going.

Doctor.

Getting the spine done,

The underwater-forest tank.

The driftwood has been Pre-soaked

So it doesn't release Too many tannins

That would discolor the water,

And we also set up Special lighting from aqua medic

That covers all spectrums,

Just like sunlight In a natural environment.

Brett: There's a lot of fish here.

I never thought In my wildest dreams

That you guys would Do this.

One of the things That they wanted to do w

As have it fit in With the theme of your office.

And the theme of the office was Very natural earth tones.

We came up With a live-planted tank.

Gonna give you the greenery, Give you the wood.

Rahmi: beautiful. The rocks.

Wayde: And it has all custom equipment Inside it,

Made for, actually, A planted discus tank.

They're very calm fish.

They're from south america, And they like to hang out

By roots in lakes In muddy water.

Obviously, they got their Name because they're Shaped like disks.

Their body's really compressed,

And they're actually In the cichlid family.

They have eyes that can see you From across the room.

So as your patients And as people are walking by,

They're actually gonna be Staring at them

And watching What's going on.

You notice they come

In a variety Of different colors.

Pigeon red.

We have the snow white discus, Turquoise discus.

Great thing about these guys is As you feed them,

You can enhance their color With food.

[ chuckling ] Wow.

All the little fish That you see there,

It's a variety Of schools of tetras,

And then we have the fish

That look like they have Big jaws.

Those are called hatchets

'cause they actually look like A little hatchet.

All the plants in it are Alive.

Amazon swords. We have ferns.

The plants help With the fish waste.

What it does is They work together.

So, the fish waste, Basically, is --

Taken by the plants. Feeds the plants,

And then the plants grow,

And it helps keep your nitrates, Your ammonia levels down.

A live bed of gravel -- A substrate.

Has a mud base in it The roots can get into

And actually absorb So they can grow.

This thing's gonna grow wild.

You might have to trim it.

It's like getting a haircut Once in a while.

Brett doesn't know About that.

[ laughs ]

In addition to the trimming,

The doctors will Have to watch out

For algae growth, Because with simulated sunlight,

It will grow faster Than in a normal tank.

Once the plants take root,

You can't change out The substrate,

So adding nutrients to the water Is key for healthy growth.

I am just blown away, To be quite honest,

How beautiful and how much It blends with everything.

The fact that you guys think

That you're singling out For me

Just makes me realize How blessed I am.

Having a tank out In the vegas sun --

It can melt the coral insert And warp the lids.

Taking a hot cookie sheet Out of the oven without mitts.

Our guys were able To start the plumbing,

And over time, When salt creep gets back there,

They're gonna be able to see The salt creep from here.

Salt creep happens

When saltwater splashes On a surface

And discolors it and corrodes it Over time.

In other words, the drywall's Gonna look like crap.

So, What does that mean?

Means we got to figure out a way To make it black.

If the acrylic is colored With black vinyl,

In the event of saltwater Dripping back there,

You won't be able to see The salt creep.

We can't put this in Right now.

We got to make that black, Finish it, and do it right.

I got to give phil a call.

I got to see If he can get down here.

We got to stop these guys, Dude.

To fix a problem That hasn't happened yet is

A waste Of time and money.

To come over and black out The acrylic with vinyl

So you won't be able To see the wall behind it.

The only problem is The plumbing has to stop

So we can pull the tank out.

I think this can wait, But wayde, he's a perfectionist,

And he wants it done Right now.

Wayde: not one thing, It's another.

We did it this way. It was very, very difficult.

The coral insert itself is Molded

Off of real pieces of coral, So you have table coral,

You have a variety Of different things --

Things that you're gonna Actually see inside the ocean.

I mean, I do a lot of diving,

And this is what I see When I'm down under,

And now I get to see it In my office every day.

How awesome.

One thing that was Extremely important to you was

Having the spine to be Anatomically correct,

So our friend denny At l.V. Props actually took

A grade-a medical skeleton And molded off of it,

So that is Actually anatomically correct.

I said that we were gonna be Able to light things up

So people can see What they are.

Guess what. We were able To make that happen.

So, wayde, Show him your cervical.

We like to kind of theme fish Based upon what you have here.

We got a porcupine puffer,

Which have spikes On their spines,

Basically, To protect themselves.

We also got you A niger trigger,

And the niger trigger likes To take his top spine

And push it up and lodge himself Into rock for protection.

A lunare wrasse in there. A sunset wrasse.

You have a queen angel, Which comes from the caribbean.

You have a bunch Of yellow tangs.

A harlequin tusk.

We got harlequin tusk, Which comes from australia.

There's a hogfish back there. A hogfish.

He knows his fish. I like that.

Yeah. All right.

We stepped Out of our comfort zone

With an atm first.

We created An underwater-forest tank

That's packed to the gills With calming discus fish

And lush live plants.

It's 480 gallons, 8 feet long, And weighs 4,800 pounds.

And we installed Specialized filtration

And lighting that'll keep This underwater forest

Growing strong.

Joey over at dynamic spine got A wave-front saltwater tank

That weighs 4,500 pounds.

It's viewable from two rooms

And has An interactive spine insert.

Yeah, So when I throw out my back

From carrying your workload,

I'll go see joey And tell him where it hurts.

Exactly.
