(upbeat music)
(announcer): Monica Marks. One of the most celebrated,
inspiring advertising executives of the last 30 years.
Along with her creative partner, Doug Garcia,
she's graced more covers of Ad National
than anyone else in the industry.
Congratulations to Monica Marks of Atelier Ad Agency,
this year's recipient of the Advertising Executive
of the Year Award.
(applause, cheering) - Thank you. Oh!
Ah! Ah!
That's heavy. (chuckling)
I always think people are insufferable
when they say that, but now it's me, and I'm not.
(audience laughs)
Doug, this award belongs to you, too, and...
- Aw, thank you, thanks.
- Well, just hang on to that. I...
(Doug shrieks)
(crowd gasps)
(scoffs)
As someone...
who is incredibly inspiring,
your words, not mine,
I can only hope that I'll continue to influence
the next generation of women in advertising.
(applause, cheering) Thank you so much, thank you!
(mimicking): And last but not least,
I'd like to thank my social media manager,
Kriska Thompson, who I've constantly overlooked
and not given the opportunities she deserves!
(normal voice): Ugh, she's so fake.
(hip-hop music)
Hi, y'all. Get ready with me
as I go about my day as a 24-year-old living in NYC!
Okay, really quick fit check.
Love these leggings. They keep the back stacked.
Let's go. (blows kisses)
There's my landlord, Dennis. Hey, Dennis.
- Hey! You owe me rent!
- Yeah, to be financially transparent,
I am behind on rent.
But look at the trash! So cute, so gritty, so New York.
Then I walk to hot yoga.
- Watch it or I'll slit your throat!
(chuckles) - New York is full
of so many interesting characters.
(whispering): Here I am at hot yoga.
It used to be called Bikram
until the founder fled the country
after being cancelled.
Legally, I can't say more, but Google it.
(exaggerated exhaling)
And now I'm back in my efficiency in Brooklyn.
You can't call it a studio because you can reach
the stove from the couch.
(blows kiss)
(rock music)
Where is everyone?
(phone alarm blaring)
(chiming) Mm.
Morning.
Clem, turn your camera on.
(thuds)
(man groans) Oh, my God. Dude,
you've gotta get out of there.
- I know. Three people sharing a studio in New York?
It's giving morgue.
(sighs) - Why did we think it was so
cool and glamorous to go into advertising?
- Mad Men. - Mm.
And I originally only started watching
because of the title. I mean,
I thought it was about men who couldn't control
their emotions... which it was.
Where's Elliot?
(crowd muttering angrily)
(indecisive humming)
- What's in the passionfruit lemonade?
- Passionfruit.
And lemonade. - Together?
Wow.
Do I want that? - I... I don't know.
(gasps) - Let's take a poll!
Okay, passionfruit...
Passion-- - Sorry.
(shrieks) I'm going to be late for work.
- Sir, please don't yell at me. I'm audibly fragile.
- Okay, so we need content for Nest Slippers.
Which picture is better to boost engagement?
- I think the bravest course of action
is to just admit that slippers are in no way,
shape, or form engaging.
- 'Sup, social media team?
Y'all ready to slay today and post some fire content?
I know I am! Cha!
- Look who it is, Clem. Minnesota Matt.
- Guys-- - Person.
- Woman. - Please stop calling me
Minnesota Matt, okay? As a sign of respect--
- Minnesota Matt, what are you doing here?
- Well, I know Monica's tied up,
so I thought I'd come on and supervise.
- Did she ask you to do that?
- No, it's called taking initiative.
- You look like crap. - I slept at the office.
I was up all night working on Nom Nom Almonds.
What's your excuse? - Insomnia. Climate change.
The evil capitalist overlord that is this job.
- The plight of Gen Z. (chuckling)
Read all about it on Yahoo News.
- Ew. - By the way, where's Elliot?
(crowd chanting): Elliot! Elliot! Elliot!
Elliot! Elliot!
Elliot! (cheering, applause)
- Yeah!
- Are you coming into the office today?
- Never. - Nope. Science is in, Eminem.
Working from home promotes a healthier lifestyle.
- The C-suite feels differently.
- What is the C-suite, anyway?
Does the C stand for catatonic,
'cause that's what you're making me.
- The C is for chief officers, Clem.
You know, the ones who don't let us work on any
real campaigns even though we know what we're doing
and have literal Communication degrees.
- It is criminal we didn't get to work
on the Vibes Headphone campaign.
- I know, and they didn't even let us see it
because they were afraid we'd make it better.
Monica and Doug are on death's doorstep.
Professionally speaking, of course.
- They're not going anywhere. - Neither was that quarter
I swallowed. According to doctors,
it was never going to come out of my butt.
But guess what? I passed it.
With flying colours.
- Bit of an overshare, but love you all the same.
(hip-hop music)
(elevator dings)
- Have we heard from Oliver yet? - He didn't see me drop
the award, did he? Ugh, I can't believe that happened.
- No, he's been busy all morning in an online auction
trying to buy a vintage yacht.
- I thought they already had a yacht?
- Orcas. - Oh, well.
Would be nice if the Chairman of the agency
showed his face around here once in a while,
but luckily, we have me.
- I couldn't agree more. - Where is everyone?
Don't tell me the social media team
are working from home again. - Monica?
(both shriek)
- Good God, Natasha. You creep people out.
- You shouldn't say "God."
It could possibly trigger the deists.
(scoffs) - Another thing ruined.
(chuckles humourlessly) And we are out of Diet Coke.
- I'm HR, Doug. That's not what I do.
- Award-winning Monica! (laughing)
Our fearless leader. Atelier's glorious sorceress
who-- - Matt. No.
- Monica? Your call
with the president of Boppin' Burger.
- Ooh, George! - George.
We love George.
George.
- George!
- Well, if it isn't advertising's dynamic duo.
Congratulations on that award there, Monica.
- This one? (chuckling)
Thank you so much. Uh... (grunts with effort)
Do you know, I am still after my white whale,
which, of course, is the Super Advo.
I'm saving a spot for it specifically right over there.
- Mm-hmm. And, you know what,
we are going to win the only major award
we haven't won for your Superbowl ad.
- Aww. - So please, tell us.
What are your campaign hopes and dreams?
- We're gonna make all of them come true.
We're like advertising fairy godmothers.
Your wish is our command.
- For this, we are pivoting our entire
advertising focus onto Gen Z.
That's consumers 18-24.
Do you think that's something you can handle?
The youth of it all?
(laughing)
Well, can you? - Yes, we can.
Do you know, George, in certain lighting,
I have been mistaken for Gen Z.
- And I might be bisexual, which is very Z.
I'm drawn to women with strong chins.
- You know, you two are the best.
There's no doubt about that.
But this really needs to feel young.
(woman): George! - What?!
- Let's go! - I'm sorry, I've gotta run.
My wife signed us up for this charity
tennis tournament called Backhands for Orphans.
Makes me want to walk into the Atlantic.
- Aww, that sounds nice.
So, we'll talk soon, George. Thank you so much.
I need an optometrist appointment, pronto.
Through these, George looks like a big white blob.
- That's George. - Still here.
- I'm so sorry. - Oh, hi.
- When I say blob, I mean it with...
- A good blob. - Where's the little exit man?
Just call for... - Annabelle?!
- So, yes, okay. Bye! - Bye, George!
- Oh, my cleavage.
Matt.
Feel free to leave any time.
- I'm determined to prove to you guys that I have
what it takes to be moved to the creative side.
Look, I have some ideas-- - Nope.
Doug, what do you have? - Alright.
This is going to be a play on the musical Rent.
- Ah. - Right?
But instead of people, they're all young burgers
trying to make it in New York City.
And, of course, we'll have the big signature number
Seasons of Love, but we'll change the lyrics to,
โช 525,600 burgers โช
- Doug, that's a bad idea.
- Yeah.
- Monica, Oliver's on line one.
- Oh. Huh.
Oliver, hi, how are you?
Did you get that vintage yacht? - No.
No, That bastard Mark Zuckerberg outbid me again.
I swear to God, the guy is building a fleet.
(Doug laughs)
- Well, I'll get the canons ready.
- Hey, Doug. How are ya? - Doing fabulous as ever, sir.
Ooh! Do not forget, the Vibes Headphone
ad drops tonight.
- We are having a little launch party here in the office.
Just some wine and caviar. We're very excited.
-Very excited, Oliver. (coughs)
- Who's that? - Matt.
- Um, who?
Monica, listen, I just got off the phone with George
from Boppin' Burger.
Why are clients calling me at home?
- Oh, I have no idea. What did he say?
- Well, he said he's concerned about you being able
to deliver a Gen Z ad.
He wants youthful voices on this campaign,
so get them.
He's coming in this afternoon to meet the team.
(phone chimes)
Yes! Yes, yes, yes. The auction's reopened.
Zuckerberg withdrew his bid. He wants a submersible now.
Okay, I gotta go. Buh-bye!
- I hate to say it. - Please don't say it.
- I think it's time we bring on Gen Z.
- They're social media! This is not even what they do!
Kriska's entitled. I once found Clem asleep
on the toilet. Elliot sees a witch in Queens
instead of a therapist.
But fine. (sighs)
Send in the clowns.
(rhythmic music)
(indistinct chatter)
- She's coming. - Okay.
- Oh, well!
So nice to see everyone.
Thank you all so much for joining us in the office.
Okay, we have a lot to go over today.
Oh, Clem? What are you wearing?
- It's an ethically made adult sleep sack.
If I get tired, I just lie down.
- Great. This is gonna be great.
Um, okay, let's get started. What I want to do...
Where's Elliot?
(glass clangs)
- Hello? (sighs)
You know, someone should put some stickers on there
like they do for birds. - Elliot, you're late.
- Oh, I have time blindness, ma'am.
- Okay. Um, today we are here
to work on the Boppin' Burger campaign for the Superbowl.
- Oh, my God, finally! - Yeah!
Brrra-ga-ga-ga! - No. No, no.
- Sorry, Monica. Continue.
- This is massive exposure
and could land us a Super Advo award.
- Ugh, you guys, don't get me wrong.
Social media's cool and all, but this, this is like my dream,
you know? This is what I went to school for!
To be working on campaigns, and pitching--
- Hon, we don't need an autobiography.
- Huh. - Okay, we are going to be
working on this campaign non-stop for the next
six months. - Pass.
- Yeah, me too. I'm solo poly
and we're not into commitment.
- "No" is not an option.
Okay, let's start simply.
What is it that people your age like to do,
besides correct others?
- Well, we like our phones, obviously.
- Okay. - Wellness, inclusion,
pop culture. - Yes.
- Pop culture, talk more about that.
What's hip and happening right now? Um, TikTok?
- Tickety tock, watches. - Tic-tacs!
- Mints, good breath, toothpaste.
- What phrases are cool? Like, hey, hot mama!
- What's up, doc? - What's cooking?
- Ooh, looking good. - I'm a girlboss.
(Kriska and Clem groan) - The term girlboss
is incredibly problematic.
(wheezes) - Here we go.
- It's corporate feminism,
which is an inherent contradiction
because true feminism is intersectional,
and thus anti-capitalist.
It's patronizing to add a gender equivalent on the word boss.
Also, it's cheugy. - Mm-hmm.
- Clem, that is the most I've ever heard you talk.
- I know. I'm exhausted.
You will not be hearing from me again.
- Okay, let's think about celebrities.
We love celebrities in ads. What celebrities are hot?
Carmen Electra. - Uh, Johnny Depp.
- Selena Gomez. - Gomez from the Addams family.
- Kylie Jenner! - No, no. She's a billionaire.
- Yeah. We're firmly anti-billionaire.
Except for Rihanna, she gets a pass.
- What about Olivia Rodrigo? - Oh, fangirling.
If you pick up what I'm putting down.
- Gross. - You guys like her?
No objections?
Okay, maybe they stop at Boppin' Burger
on the tour bus. - Well, no one really
goes to get food anymore. Everyone gets it delivered.
- Well, what if their tour bus breaks down
and they're starving, so they pull out their phones
and order from Snacky Appy.
- I mean,
that would be a partnership with Snacky Appy.
We could call Josh. That could be good.
Okay, so Snacky Appy shows up
and delivers their burgers, and takes them all
to the show, and they have the night of their lives.
- I love it. I love it.
(overlapping approving chatter) - Yeah, it's good.
- Monica! Moni...ca...
- Okay. Well, thank you so much.
Doug, you got that down, and I will be pitching that.
We'll call George and see what he thinks.
- Um, Monica? I'd like to pitch it, too.
- Um... excuse me? - Well, I truly believe
I have what it takes to work alongside
you and Doug as a creative lead.
- Absolutely not. - Why?
- Perhaps I wasn't clear.
The only reason any of you will be in the pitch
is so George can see young faces.
You're not there to actually pitch.
You're not even close to ready.
- With all due respect, Monica, I am.
I mean, I've been working here for months.
(Doug scoffs) - Exactly.
Which is why during the pitch,
you will not say a word. Show her, Doug.
I'm Doug. - Huh...
- I'm thinking. I have ideas.
I'm letting Monica take the lead.
Great idea, Monica.
Just like that. (sighs)
- If she wasn't so hot, I'd be annoyed.
- Can you believe her?
I didn't look my boss in the eyes
for the first two years.
- I refused to ask to go to the bathroom.
I went in water bottles at my desk.
- Monica, Doug. Can I be in the pitch meeting?
- No. - Not after last time.
(Latin music)
- But imagine I have breasts. Huh? Huh?
- It took us months to settle that lawsuit.
(rhythmic music)
- Hmm...
(clears throat) - Monica should be here
any moment. (chuckling)
- She's busy prepping for a viewing party
for our new Vibes campaign. It's gonna be very hip.
We're talking titanium.
- Huh. - Hi, sorry.
Hi, George. How are you? So good to see you.
- Monica. - Oh, who's this?
- This is my daughter, Stella.
She's 14. - Ah.
- I thought it might be helpful to have a youthful eye.
You know, 'cause this is your audience.
She's gotta like it. - For shizzle.
Hey, Stella, hey girl.
(sighs)
So, George, I wanted to introduce you
to our fabulous Gen Z social media team
who'll be joining the campaign.
So, Stella, let me ask you a question.
Do you like Olivia Rodrigo?
Me, too. So picture this.
Olivia and her band are on the road
singing Vampire a cappella on their bus.
All of a sudden, the bus breaks down.
They start freaking out. What are they gonna do?
They're starving and they're not gonna make it
to the concert venue in time!
- Okay, and just to set the scene,
they're like in the middle of the desert
in like a Thelma and Louise type road.
Have you seen that movie? Oh my God, it's so good.
You're gonna love it. Actually, maybe don't watch it.
They just end up becoming hardened criminals
and they end up killing themselves.
- Okay, anyway. Olivia and her band
end up ordering Boppin' Burger from Snacky Appy,
and they get the most delicious,
most mouth-watering, most nutritious
burgers money can buy.
The delivery driver drives them to the concert.
They make it on time.
Everyone's night is saved, thanks to Boppin' Burger.
- Yay!
- And, of course, there will be a huge social media component.
- What were you thinking for socials?
- Oh, all the platforms. Especially TikTok.
- Right, but specifically?
- Uh, well, in the ways that it's used best.
You know, viral dance video... - Very, very on trend.
You know, we'll do some challenges
like the ice bucket challenge,
but instead of ice, it would be fries.
- Hot fries. (Doug): Yeah.
- Crispy and hot. - You know, we can create
a Boppin' Burger filter with a fun Boppin' Burger
cowboy hat. I actually took the liberty of creating
a mock-up filter for you to see.
- Oh, George, it's... - It's, it's...
- Hold on.
Oh! (chuckles)
I'm wearing a hat. I'm a cowboy.
- Stella?
- She likes it. I like it.
- I'm Kriska, by the way.
I'm Atelier's social media manager.
I also helped Monica develop this pitch.
- Well, uh... - She's good.
- She's something.
Do you know how much preparation
goes into a meeting like that?
And then you show the client a mock-up
without even checking with me first?
- But he liked it. - I specifically told you
not to speak. There are millions of dollars
plus a Super Advo award on the line.
You are not to pitch to a client,
at least not until you reach the age
where you stop wearing flavoured lip gloss.
- Monica, if you'd just give me a chance,
I actually know what I'm doing.
- Your generation's sense of entitlement astounds me.
Your desire to do something does not constitute
your ability to actually do it.
I'd love to be an opera singer
but I am a natural baritone.
- Monica. It's Vibes time!
(rhythmic music)
(indistinct chatter)
- Looking snazzy.
- Oh, thanks, it's my fancy blazer, Bill.
- Sleeves are too short. (glass clinking)
- Um, okay, it's almost here.
Um, I just want to say a quick thank you
to everyone who contributed to the Vibes campaign.
It is because of all of you...
(quietly): Not all of us. - ...that this ad is gonna be
a huge success. So, thank you!
- ...will be next, right after these messages.
(birds chirping)
(upbeat pop music)
(hip-hop music)
- Oh!
(up-tempo jazz music)
(gasps)
- Ooh... - Oh, my God.
- Oh!
Oh!
(serene music)
(meditative vocalizations)
(bright happy music)
(man): All Vibes matter.
(applause) - I mean, come on!
- This is so not going to go over well.
(rhythmic music)
(indistinct chatter)
- Oh my gosh, that would be amazing.
- Monica, Atelier's queen bee. - Matt. Stop.
- Yep. I don't wanna alarm you two,
but the vibes here, really off.
- What do you mean? - Oliver wants
to speak with you. - Great, what line is he on?
- He's in the office. (together): He's in the office?
- What were you two thinking with this Vibes ad?
- What do you mean? - I woke up this morning
with the Internet going crazy.
- Sorry, but we don't use the C word anymore.
- Why would you even bring that up?
I haven't called a woman that in years.
- I was referring to the word "crazy".
- Yeah, so was I.
"This ad has really bad vibes.
Beyond tone deaf. Everyone who worked on this ad
should kill themselves." - Oliver, please.
Those comments are from losers who have nothing better to do
than be outraged by headphones commercials.
People are far too sensitive nowadays.
- Exactly. This morning, I was in a hit-and-run.
Life goes on. - Oh my gosh, are you okay?
- Oh, yeah. I ran.
- The CEO of Vibes just released this statement:
"We trusted Atelier Advertising to lead Vibes
in a progressive direction, but they fell short.
We're cutting ties effective immediately."
- That ad was full of diversity and inclusion.
- And dancing! - The content is not
the problem. It's the slogan!
All Vibes matter. It sounds like...
- Like what? - All Lives Matter!
Sorry. - Oh, come on.
Obviously, that wasn't the intention,
and all those words are different.
Except for the last one. - And the first one...
- Oliver, Vibes signed off on the campaign.
You signed off on the campaign. Everyone was happy with it.
No one voiced a concern.
- This whole thing is a PR disaster.
Everyone is calling Atelier out of touch.
All our clients want is Gen Z.
Can we not give it to them? - Let's give it to them,
absolutely. We can involve Gen Z much more.
- No. Sorry. It's clear to me
that this agency is heading in the wrong direction,
so I think it's time for a regime change.
- What does that mean?
- Would you bring them in, please?
- Oh, now you're bringing them in?
This is a private conversa-- - Okay, so,
from what I heard, the meeting with George
went extremely well, in large part,
thanks to this Krisko? - Kriska.
- Right. So I'm promoting her. Kriska will be our new CEO,
replacing you. - Are you out of your mind?
- W-What? - C-suite is out.
Gen Z is in.
And she can bring her team with her.
- Oliver. Really. She cannot be CEO.
She is a child. - I'm actually 24 and a half.
- Only a child counts in half years.
- Ol, please. (scoffs)
Can't we work something out? - I mean, we have history.
- You know me. - And me.
- We've worked together for decades.
I have made you millions of dollars.
- And now you're costing me millions of dollars.
You're the face of this company, and a head's gotta roll.
So, Monica, you're fired.
You too, Doug. - What?
- Oliver, this agency would be nothing without us.
Doug and I aren't going anywhere.
(rock music)
- Keep it moving.
- I built this company.
- Unhand me, you brute!
- New C-suite! (squeals)
(phone camera clicks)
- Alright, alright!
(elevator dings)
- Don't worry, Doug. It's not over.
(metallic clang) - Not again!
(energetic music)
