Shari, this is DC.

If a client wants me to work Sunday, I work Sunday!

Even event gurus need a day off, Jenna!

Well the meeting's with a tech icon

who is famous for working 24/7.

Oh, who is it?

Oh, let me guess. You're under one of those NBAs?

I think you mean NDA.

You've been out of the country too long.

And no.

He's been very open source with everything

to do with his company.

It's billionaire Tom Redlands.

Oh, wow. He's kind of a big deal.

Tom Redlands!

Exactly. And he's starting a new nonprofit.

So I really need to nail this account.

Well just nail it quickly.

Don't let him keep you too long. Healthy boundaries, Jenna.

You know I'm working on that.

And Sunday Supper is on.

Kiki is making your favorite!

Tex-Mex, Jenna!

Yumm.

Just smile a lot and agree with him but let him know you have

only have ten minutes to spare because it's Sunday.

Okay, thank you, Angie.

Jenna, Jenna! This is what you got to do.

You got to go in there,

you got to tell him you're going to give it 110 percent

and you're going to knock it out of the park.

That's all he wants to hear.

Salad!

Thanks Josh!

Your sports lingo is always so helpful in a business meeting.

Doing my best for the team!

Just be yourself! It's the best you can be.

Thanks, Angie!

And pick up chips on the way!

Don't wait for me!

But you're important. We will wait!

We will?

Most of us will wait.

Oh!

Oh no!

So sorry.

Sorry, I wasn't looking either.

I was not watching where I was going.

Here you go.

Andrew!

Jenna?

What are you doing here? I thought you were in Paris.

I, I was.

But I moved home to get into real estate with my brother,

John, and it turns out that's not very interesting.

I started my own consulting firm.

Wow. That sounds impressive.

What about you? What are you up to?

You're back from Chicago?

Five years ago.

Oh wow.

Yeah, I got my degree in marketing and design and

came back here to put it to work.

That's great.

Yeah.

Here you go.

- Thank you. - Sorry.

Well, it was nice to run into you.

Literally.

Oh, sorry, I have a meeting.

Oh, no, of course. Sure, yeah.

It was good to see you.

You too.

Hello.

Hello?

I have a meeting with Tom Redlands.

It seems he's given me your number.

You're the event guru from Thistlebird Marketing?

That's me.

I'm consulting with Tom's firm.

No way!

That's crazy.

What are the chances of that?

Oh, is that Tom's office?

No, it's my family.

Your foster family.

It's been so long since I've them.

How's Shari and Josh and Angie?

I remember those dinners you guys used to have.

What a feast.

You remember!

Yeah, you always said how important those weekly dinners

were to you all.

Wait, it's Sunday right now. Right?

Uh huh.

Are you still doing Sunday Suppers?

Of course.

It's the glue that keeps us together.

But let's do this meeting.

I can assure you, nothing gets in the way of me and my work.

It's good to know, um,

but this can absolutely wait until tomorrow.

Let's reschedule.

Go have dinner with your family.

Really?

Yeah.

What about Mr. 24/7?

Ahh... That's just branding.

Yum! It smells so good in here.

Ah! You made it!

Hi!

- Hey, Jen. - Josh!

Interception!

Thank you!

Cilantro, fresh from the garden!

You look so lovely. So professional.

A little too professional for Sunday Supper!

Jenna! Awww!

So, how did you ditch the billionaire?

The meeting was rescheduled to tomorrow.

Good!

Well, see now that just makes sense.

But still, you know the rule.

I know, last to arrive is on dish duty.

Ah, it's a simple game.

You wash the dish, you dry the dish, you put the dish away.

It's a game of inches!

Sports analogy and Pacino.

Okay, everybody take a seat!

Ah, needs salsa.

Salsa's almost ready.

Yeah, this is going to be a good one.

I feel it.

Okay, enough about me.

I want to hear about everyone else's week.

Careful what you wish for.

He's referring to my fabulous new commission,

Cookie Sterling.

The host from "DC Today"?

- Yes. - I love her!

Well, Shari had a little challenge with it.

It wasn't her favorite day.

I'm painting a family portrait with her twin boys

near this fountain on her property.

I couldn't get those boys to sit still for one second.

She actually tripped and fell in the fountain.

Thank you, Angie, I almost forgot!

Yeah, it was crazy.

Can't wait to see that painting.

Water color?

All right Coach.

Did you already give the track meet play by play?

- No. - Yes!

Well, I could hear it all over again.

Oh, thank you, Angie.

I try to keep it to the highlights.

Well, I did like the one about that shy girl

who came first place.

That was sweet.

Oh, is that the same one who froze at state last year?

Yeah. Yeah.

She beat all the other schools in triple jump.

I love that!

And those kids can really eat a lot of burgers.

Yes they can!

Kiki brought her food truck to the meet.

I did. And they cleaned me out.

Of course they did.

So how were classes this week? Everything add up?

Now we got the funny one here.

Yeah, it's good.

Some of the kids who are struggling are getting more

confident, asking for help with trigonometry,

which is great.

Asking for help is such a beautiful skill.

Totally!

How about you, Rory? What's new?

I don't know. Nothing.

Why don't you tell them about school?

Okay.

I got an eight out of 10 on my math quiz.

That's awesome, buddy!

Do you like math?

I like it because it's just numbers.

I don't have to talk to anyone.

You're going to make new friends, you'll see.

It takes a minute to get used to a new school.

Uh huh.

Yes it does.

I'm so excited for you, Jenna,

rubbing shoulders with the tech elite.

Well, about that.

The meeting wasn't actually with Tom.

He sent his consultant.

And I'll be working with Andrew Clarington.

Wait, what?

The Andrew Clarington?

Your old Andrew Clarington?

The one and only.

Yeah, it turns out he's Tom Redlands' liaison.

And how do you feel about that?

Do we need a refresh on boundaries.

Yeah, exactly.

You need to talk to Tom Redlands,

and you need to tell him that there's a conflict of interest

and you cannot work with Andrew!

Shari, I can't do that. That would be so unprofessional!

Ah...

Well, Rory, speak up. You can say anything here.

Who's Andrew?

Hmm. How to explain Andrew?

He's her ex.

He's a heartbreaker.

He's just someone that I really, really liked in high school

who apparently didn't like me back.

Well, all I can say is, I hope you try and protect your heart.

I will. Thanks, Ang.

All right!

Let's say what we're hopeful for.

Josh, you go first?

Okay, ah...

I am hopeful that I can talk Rory

into joining the track team.

I love that!

You.

Me next? Ummm...

I am hopeful that I can pay off my food truck this year.

- Yes. - Right.

Ah, I'm hopeful I can get through this new commission

without going under water again.

Literally.

Oh there it is!

Boom!

Your turn, Rory.

I don't know.

Nothing.

It's okay, sweetie.

It's just our way of lifting up our hearts to know there's

always something to look forward to.

May I be excused?

Yes. Of course! Thank you for asking.

Have a great week, buddy.

Have fun at school!

Is everything okay with him?

You all remember what it was like in the beginning.

For each of you.

You want me to go and talk to him?

That'd be wonderful, any of you reaching out would help.

Well, he stayed all the way through dinner tonight.

That's a win.

You know, I think it was all of Jenna's gossip

that kept him interested.

Oh, Jenna.

You didn't say what you are hopeful for.

I'm hopeful I'll get through this new job, Andrew and all.

Yes.

Cheers!

I need a new fork.

I got it. I got it. Sit down.

But I take it you like the new job and it pays well?

Yes, it's for a great cause.

And yes, it does.

Well, then maybe this is the job that gets you into

the proper office space.

My assistant is looking to set me up with a real estate agent,

but I love you for worrying about me.

I know it's hard for you,

but sometimes you've got to put yourself first.

You've told me that separate spaces for work and home

would be healthier for you.

It would.

I'm still trying to figure out that work-life balance.

You're smart.

You'll figure it out.

You can do anything.

Thanks Ang.

Of course. Love you.

Love you too.

I'll call you tomorrow.

I just want to make sure I'm a hundred percent prepped

for this meeting.

Jenna, you and I are a team.

I would never send you out there unprepared.

But don't worry, you'll be making it up to me

with many lattes. Many.

Deal.

Okay, everything you need for tomorrow is ready to go.

Here are the segments of the pitch,

color coded, because that's fun.

Oh, and I started an AI mock up of what the event floor

might look in two different color schemes.

Should be ready before you get there.

I love your brain.

And I'm so grateful. Thank you.

It's your vision. I'm just executing it.

Which reminds me.

Can you please give that real estate agent a call back?

Apparently there's this cute little corner office

on K Street to see.

You don't think we can keep up

with everyone else working remotely?

No offense Jenna, but you need a life.

You can't entertain the way your apartment is right now.

Hm. Yeah.

Work-life balance. You're not wrong.

Which means I'm right.

As usual.

You better get going.

Yes.

Good luck with this Andrew guy. I searched him.

He seems like a straight-shooter.

Yeah. Yeah.

He's, ah, he's all right.

Text me if you need anything.

I will.

- I'll see you later. - See ya.

Good morning!

Hi, how are you?

I'm good. How are you?

Good.

I got you an iced mocha latte with three pumps of vanilla,

topped with whipped cream.

Oh wow!

I haven't had one of these since junior year when I could

burn off sugar just by walking down the halls.

I guess I should have texted. Sorry.

You know what?

Who am I to turn down whipped cream on a Monday morning?

That's the spirit!

Mmm. It's good.

Thanks for finding an office space.

My office is a little cramped at the moment.

Oh yeah, no problem.

Tom owns like a dozen buildings so we have our pick.

Great view.

It sure is.

All right!

Well, Ms. Event Guru, would you like to tell me your thoughts

on the All For Family Foundation gala?

First of all, I love the concept of this foundation.

All For Family. It's all in the name.

Connecting family with all the resources they need.

So that led me to think, why not make a connection with the gala?

Let's create a mock up of an All For Family center,

but fun-sized.

A mock up of the center?

Yes. So, this is a nonprofit that helps families with food,

daycare, health services, housing solutions.

They even have therapy pets.

And as I understand it, if this pilot program goes well,

you'll be able to open centers all across the country?

That's right, yeah.

So all the more reason to let the potential donors see what

the families are getting once the money flows in.

And we can have fun with it.

Catering trays at the food area maybe?

An area for people to visit with the therapy pets

and see how they reduce anxiety.

It's a great way to get people excited

about the idea in a very hands-on way.

What do you think?

Um...

It's...

Yeah, it's...

It's interesting. It's definitely interesting.

I, ah, I just don't think it's what Tom will be expecting.

Exactly! That's my specialty.

Giving people what they didn't know they wanted.

I know people hire you for the unconventional,

but Tom has made it clear that's not him.

So, in this case, respectfully,

I just, I think it might be missing the mark a little bit.

In what way?

Well, this is Tom's first foray into nonprofits.

That's why he hired me, right.

High end donors equal high end experiences.

These are his words.

So I just think Tom might be a little put off thinking that

his donors might have to get their hands dirty.

Who's getting their hands dirty?

I just mean a lot of these people want to help

but when it comes down to it, a lot of them shy away

from learning about the ground floor details.

They just want to mingle with other high net worth people.

So it's just about networking and not the actual cause?

No need to get defensive.

Sorry.

Well, what are you thinking for the gala?

Okay.

I was thinking,

a champagne garden party at the Harrington Royal Hotel.

Oh, wow. That's...

Traditional.

Exactly. Just a real black-tie affair.

Classy...

Caviar, canapés, and I don't know, classical music trio?

Exactly.

Now you're reading Tom's mind!

Okay, I need some girl talk.

Are you seeing someone?

Tell me you're seeing someone.

Well, I am sorry to disappoint.

But, I just got back a few months

and I am not ready to see anyone right now.

Life is so different.

A diplomatic life with David, done.

You need to put yourself out there.

You need to date.

You need to speak for yourself.

Fair enough.

So, how was your Andrew meeting?

He was so sure he knew what Tom wanted

that he barely listened to my pitch.

Huh.

Kind of like senior year when he insisted on going camping

even though you knew it was going to rain all weekend?

Your memory is astonishing.

Oh, I know.

And yes, it was exactly like that.

You know what I think?

You think I should stand my creative ground, right?

No! I think you should do whatever it takes

to get through this job and move on.

Even if my reputation's on the line?

Your reputation will be fine.

You are known for executing beautiful events.

This will check that box.

They don't all have to be ground breaking.

I don't know.

I like to look at each event as it's own unique opportunity

to think outside the typical black-tie, champagne box.

Hmmm. And that's why everybody loves you so much,

because you're so passionate about what you do.

But Jenna, with Andrew involved, it's just, it's too much weight.

Yeah.

Maybe that's what's bugging me.

Oh, wait.

You don't still have feelings for Andrew, do you?

No! No.

No?

Don't worry!

I'm not going to try to rekindle anything with Andrew.

Okay.

Well, just so we're on the same page.

Can you please remember what Angie taught us?

Don't let your past hold you back

from making the most of the present.

Right. I'm going to make the most of the present

by taking charge of my business

and getting some new office space.

You, you nailed it.

Just one question.

Anything.

Can you execute this in ten days?

Well, it depends.

How fast can you get me approvals?

Is that your way of asking me not to drag my feet?

I have a schedule of approval dates if that helps.

Shall I send them to your office?

Absolutely. Let's start a work share protocol.

You are very good at this.

Oh. Thank you.

Can I ask you something?

Of course.

Why did you ghost me after high school?

Oh. I, uh...

I mean, that was a very different time in our lives.

And it was weird for a lot of reasons.

Weird, like,

did you feel weird hanging out with me and my foster family?

What? No!

You can tell me. I'm not ashamed of my past.

It made me who I am.

Look, Jenna, all I ever saw was a close-knit family

that loved each other.

Unlike my family that barely spoke to one another.

Your family was loud and fun. And mine was way too quiet.

I guess I didn't really know your family.

Well, let's just say that my upbringing didn't exactly set me

on a path for solid relationships in life.

I certainly didn't want the distant coldness

of my parents' marriage.

You know, my trainer has been the most constant person

in my life for years.

It's ridiculous.

You just don't get it, do you?

Great! What did you think?

Well, outdoors would be nice.

I'm not sure the weather will cooperate though.

Right now it says there's a 40 percent chance of rain that day.

It is a risk.

And I don't love the conference center.

It feels a bit cold to me.

Okay. So the first venue?

If you think it will work.

Oh, it definitely will.

I especially like that it's in a residential neighborhood.

It really adds to the helping families feel.

Not so institutional.

Yeah. Exactly!

So we're on the same page.

Same page. I love it.

Was that approval fast enough for you?

I mean, you can't beat the same day!

Technically my client. But Andrew's boss!

A date? Where's he taking you?

No idea. And it's not a date.

You're not obligated to say yes.

It has to be somewhere fancy.

No, he said he wants to discuss details.

Hey, to new friends.

To new friends.

Umm, that is fantastic!

So, Jenna Whitaker.

Who is she? Tell me everything.

Well, I went to school in Chicago,

and then I moved back right back to DC after I got my degree.

It's always been home.

Okay. What about your parents?

Well, I never knew my father, my mom raised me on her own.

And it was a bit tough, at times.

I had humble beginnings you could say.

Well, she must be very proud of you now.

I'm sure she would be.

But she passed away when I was 13.

Oh. I'm really sorry to hear that.

It's tough. Especially at 13, you're so young.

I thought I was an adult at the time,

And looking back now I realize that I was

probably too young for that role.

And it's not what she would have wanted.

We just didn't have the money.

Hm. And then what happened?

Did you go to live with family?

Actually, I fell into a foster family.

A woman named Angie took me in,

and there were other kids like me.

We've all remained quite close.

Oh cool. She sounds phenomenal.

It's like a chosen family.

That's a good way to put it.

It's actually when I knew Andrew.

We were high school sweethearts, I guess.

Wow.

Ah, so what about you?

What got you interested in tech?

Well, that wasn't the plan, really.

I was in med school, I was going to be a doctor.

My parents were very adamant about that.

So when I started doing medical school,

I just kept focusing on the tools and the equipment.

So the other students would be trying to diagnose a patient,

and I'd be looking at the stethoscope wondering,

how could I make that better.

Wow.

That's a lot to stumble into.

Yeah, no, it really is.

But lately I've been trying to get back to my roots, you know,

and really reconnect with the people.

How I can help, how can I serve?

It's not just about making money, you know.

Hey Jenna.

For putting this whole thing together.

Thank you guys.

Amazing.

You know, folks, I grew up in a pretty modest household.

My parents were proud people.

They didn't want to take any handouts, but there were some

times where we had to rely on food banks, and charity shops.

You know, I always appreciated people who

found ways to help out.

People who said, hey, you know, I have more than I need,

why don't you take this bag of groceries,

or a small grant to help you with this month's bills.

You should think, people who are in need

really want the chance to get back on their feet.

But it's hard, when the power's about to be shut off,

when your kids are hungry at home.

That's what All For Family is all about.

Just giving people a chance,

to connect, to feel that sense of belonging.

But also that sense of pride and dignity.

So let's all help the families all across America to connect.
