Official YIFY movies site: YTS.MX

[narrator] On January 16, 1992,

Eric Clapton walked out in front of a small audience

at Bray Studios, just outside of London,

to shoot his installment of the MTV concert series,Unplugged.

Since joining his first band at the age of 17,

Clapton had gone on to play with legendary groups

including the Yardbirds, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers,

the first rock supergroup, Cream,

Blind Faith, and Derek and the Dominoes.

He explored other musical directions

with various other artists

and also recorded a dozen solo albums

throughout the 1970s and '80s,

including461 Ocean Boulevard, Slow HandandJourneyman.

ForUnplugged,Clapton distilled this lifetime of music

into an hour-long set

that became a turning point in his career.

Putting aside his electric guitar,

but still accompanied by his band,

he played the whole set, well, unplugged.

The story it told paid tribute

to some of the idols of his youth, like Muddy Waters,

Bo Diddley, Robert Johnson.

It also allowed him to reimagine

some of his own best known music,

like the 1970"Layla"

and the more recent "Tears in Heaven,"

a song tragically inspired by the death

of his four-year-old son, Connor, just the year before.

Unpluggedpremiered a few months after filming

and was greeted with instant acclaim.

Its accompanying album won six Grammy Awards,

sold 26 million copies worldwide,

and went on to become the biggest live album of all time.

It is a performance filled with heart and history.

Fortunately, the crew that filmed it also took time

to interview Clapton just moments before he went on stage.

This is his story ofUnplugged.

I knew about the show, I knew aboutUnplugged,

I think a couple of years ago, I saw Don Henley.

I then kind of avoided watching it because I thought,

"well, I'd like to do this one day

"and I don't want to see how many other people--

"I don't want to see--

"I don't want be influenced

"by the way other people are doing it,"

so I sort of avoided watching it from then on.

And someone sent me The Elton John,

and I didn't even look at it, I refused to look at it

because it was close to doing the show

and I didn't want to be influenced,

so I wanted to do it as if it was brand new.

And so, I don't know

how my show will tally in with the others, but.

- Well, you ready? Okay. - Yeah.

Yeah, that was, um, that was an early, early record

that I'd heard, "Before You Accuse Me"

was, I think, on the first Bo Diddley album I ever heard

and it had "Hey! Bo Diddley" and "I'm a Man"

and a lot of other things, "Bring It to Jerome."

And that was one, I thought, it was just like--

It was a straight blues and it could be played

any way you like it, which is great.

So, I play it on stage with the electric guitar

and I think it'd be nice

to try it with two acoustics as well.

Most of the songs in the set, if they're cover songs,

they're songs I heard when I was very young

that I've always wanted to do.

So, this is a great opportunity for me to play those things

that originally influenced me.

The next song from that was "Tears in Heaven,"

was, um, part of the score for a film that I did

with Lili Zanuck, um, calledRush.

Because it was really needed

to illustrate loss

because of what happens in the movie,

and it was a good opportunity for me to--

to write about my son, about the loss of my son.

And also, um, have somewhere to put it, to channel it,

and I really wanted to say something about

what had happened to me.

And the opportunity the movie gave me was excellent

because it meant that I could write this song for the film

and express my own feelings

and have it come out soon

so that there was an audience for it.

I think, um,

with what happened to me last year,

and the loss of my son,

I think the audience, my audience,

would be very surprised

if I didn't make some sort of reference to it,

and I wouldn't want to insult them

by not including them in my grief, in a way,

and so I do intend to make these things known

and I will play them in concert and put them on record.

It is, for me, a healing process and I think--

I think it's important that you share that

with people that love your music.

Well, Walking Blues is a Robert Johnson song,

I often enjoy singing more with an acoustic situation

because when you're on stage with an electric band

and you've got the PA and everything

is at a pretty high volume,

you usually haven't got much to pitch to

other than the monitors which are in front of you

and it's a very artificial setting.

You can't really hear your own voice

as it comes out of your mouth.

You have to depend on the loudspeakers

and it's such a joy to sing with a full band

acoustically and be able to hear your voice.

And you can, I find it so much more easy to adjust

the volume of your own voice.

Whereas on stage I seem to be singing flat out all the time.

Here you can sing quietly, you know,

you've got more dynamic range.

I was only 13, and I talked my grandparents

I got nowhere with it, and I took it up,

Wrong.

So then it had to be, it wasn't acoustic I wanted anymore,

I talked my grandparents into buying me an electric guitar,

and actually, within a very short space of time,

I had got somewhere with it.

Thank you!

The Circus Left Town you know, is about,

directly about my son, really.

And the last night I spent with him was at a circus in fact so,

I mean there's not much I can say about these things except

that they helped me get through a very, very hard patch

in my life and I want to put them on a record.

In fact this is the first time that we'll be played publicly

in any condition so they'll probably change

in the recording process.

Like, they're in a very early stage

of development now, but they will be on record one day.

Yeah, uh,My Father's Eyeswas a song that I wrote

on holiday last year, when I had a kind of

revelation about my son and I--

It's a very personal matter but I never met my father.

And the closest I realized was when I was with my son.

The closest I ever came to looking in my father's eyes was

when I looked in my son's eyes.

So I wrote a song about that. It was kind of-- it was strange,

like a cycle thing that occurred to me.

And another thing that I felt I would like to share.
