[Zhu Mansion]

Phoenix Hairpin?

The opening act for tonight

is actually Phoenix Hairpin?

Do you intend

to tell the people of Lingshui

that I'm an evil Mother

who tried to separate you and my son?

I dare not.

That day, during the song selection,

I was distributing congee outside.

Mother, I heard

that you already chose the song when I returned.

How dare you still deny it?

How could I

choose such a song

and insult myself?

You're disrespectful to me.

I'll tell my son to divorce you.

Mother, it wasn't me.

Mother, I'm not like Lu Wuguan.

I won't obey you

and divorce Yi.

You should give up.

Yi, hurry and get up.

I chose the song.

It has nothing to do with her.

You...

How dare you defend her?

Mother, you wouldn't need

to fear other people's criticisms

if you're a good Mother yourself.

All this while,

Yi has been working tirelessly

to manage the Water Festival.

It's fine that you're not helping her.

But you kept picking on her.

You unfilial son!

Stop it.

Mother, please don't be angry.

It's all my fault.

Madam Yi!

Madam Yi!

Madam Yi.

Something cropped up within the Caiyun Troupe!

How dare you hit us?

Ladies!

You wretch!

Ladies!

Stop fighting!

I'm begging you two!

It's my fault!

I'm to blame.

I shouldn't have gifted that lip balm to anyone!

It's my fault!

Stop fighting!

It's all your fault.

Today's a huge occasion.

You two

are the pillars of Caiyun Troupe as well.

Why did you two get into a fight?

What exactly is going on?

Sorry for the embarrassment.

Embarrassment?

Look at my face!

It's all because of her!

[Yanniang from Caiyun Troupe]

That's an allergy triggered by Chinese yam.

Although she has applied medicine,

it'll take at least six hours

for the swelling to go away.

That won't do.

I need to perform

in less than an hour.

Physician,

are there any other solutions?

I'm sorry.

Farewell.

Why would there be Chinese yam extract

in a lip balm?

You should ask her.

How many times have I told you?

This has nothing to do with me.

Feiniang,

I just bought this Banbianjiao Lip Balm.

It's for you.

If you put this on and perform,

I'm sure you can be outstanding.

I'm outstanding because of my acting skills,

not because of anything else.

You do make it sound good.

If you're that capable,

don't put on any rouge, then.

You should perform without any makeup.

Meng, I'll take it if she doesn't want it.

I bought this

for Feiniang.

If you want one,

I'll buy it for you next time.

You try to take everything from me.

Take it if you like it.

I was wondering

why she gave it to me so easily.

It turns out that she has tampered

with the lip balm.

I didn't even open the box.

How could I tamper with it

without touching it?

Everyone knows that you're a lowborn child from Nanwu.

You have plenty of underhanded means.

Who are you calling a lowborn child?

You!

You're a lowborn child!

Stop arguing.

This box itself

looks fine.

Mr. Meng,

where did you buy this lip balm?

I bought it from the rouge stall

to the west of the city.

Did you take it with you

after buying it

without leaving it elsewhere?

During my performance,

I left it

on the table.

It's because of this wretch.

She didn't want me to get on stage

and perform Phoenix Hairpin.

She was afraid I might outshine her.

Is Phoenix Hairpin the song Mother had chosen?

Let's forget about the lip balm.

The performance will begin soon.

Judging from Yanniang's appearance,

I don't think she can perform.

Madam Yi,

we sing using our throat, nose, and abdomen,

not our mouth.

I can perform.

But look at the state you're in.

How could you get on stage?

Yi, I have an idea.

- Bravo! - Bravo!

The Zhu family did a great job

with this year's

Water Festival.

The Zhu family truly excels

at holding it.

Naturally.

I was so busy

that I didn't sleep a wink all this while.

Wasn't Madam Yi

the one handling the event?

Madam Lu,

if you didn't have a capable daughter-in-law like Yi,

I suppose we wouldn't get to enjoy a performance like Phoenix Hairpin.

Ladies, I'm sure you all are kidding.

I'm still young.

It's all thanks to Mother's excellent arrangement.

I was merely her assistant.

Let's enjoy the performance.

It'll begin soon.

Excellent!

- Bravo! - Bravo!

Excellent!

- Great! - Bravo!

Caiyun Troupe does live up to its name.

That was superb!

Madam Yi, Yan is missing!

It was great.

That was an excellent performance.

How could she be missing?

Wasn't she with you

all the time?

I was buying some osmanthus cake.

She went missing when I turned around.

The streets are crowded tonight.

Nothing must happen to her.

Madam Yi.

Commandant Xie.

What happened? Why the rush?

Yan is missing.

Can you help us to look for her?

Calm down.

How about this? Let's split up and look for her.

All right. Thank you.

Zhu, search that area.

I'll search there.

Mr. Yu.

Why are you observing the performance from here?

The view here is amazing.

The groom on the boat

resembled you.

Is that so?

Both of us have two eyes, a nose,

and a mask.

That's why we look alike.

What is this?

When I just came back,

Mr. Meng said he was sick.

He requested me

to perform on his behalf.

You didn't need

to expose me like that.

Is that so?

I insisted on doing it.

But why?

It's because I don't want you

to be married to someone else.

What? I couldn't hear you.

It's because I don't want you

to be married to someone else,

even if it's an act.

Madam, we're in trouble.

Feiniang had sprained her ankle.

What?

Miss Fei, are you okay?

What should we do?

The performance will begin soon.

Here, sit down.

Our priority tonight

is the Water Festival.

But the ceremonial dance, the most important part,

is now impossible.

The Zhu family

is utterly embarrassed!

You're something else!

You knew that you had to perform,

yet you were still careless.

Where's Yi?

Where did she go?

Madam,

we've searched

the entire Yunshui House.

We never saw Madam Yi.

She must be trying to avoid me.

She wants me

to clean up her mess.

Where did Yi go?

She cares about the Water Festival the most.

She wouldn't leave without any valid reasons.

What exactly happened?

Yan?

Madam.

Have you seen a girl around?

Have you?

No.

Yan!

Have you seen a girl around?

No, I haven't.

Miss Fei,

is there anyone in the troupe

who can replace you?

The ceremonial dance is very difficult.

No one in the troupe can replace me.

By chance, I learned some dances

in my childhood.

All this while, I've been serving

the troupe in Yunshui House.

I saw Miss Fei's dance before.

I may give it a try.

Excellent.

What do you think? Isn't it nice?

It's pretty good.

First, Yanniang got an allergy.

After that, Miss Fei sprained her ankle.

Coincidentally, she can perform the ceremonial dance.

I don't believe that all of these are mere coincidences.

Miss Fei said

Chinese yam extract triggers her asthma.

Once she suffers a relapse, she'll lose all strength.

Therefore, Qing'er's

initial target

was Miss Fei.

Yanniang just applied the lip balm

with Chinese yam extract by accident.

I never expected her

to catch hold of this opportunity.

First, she made your sister commit a mistake.

After that, she came to the rescue.

With this opportunity, she could show herself to the Zhu family.

That Qing'er is no simpleton.

We have no time to waste.

I'll go find Yi.

Keep an eye on Qing'er.

Let's split up and act.

Be careful.

Yan!

Yinlou!

Miss Jiang.

Have you seen Yi around?

She thought Yan had gone missing.

She should be searching for her.

Yan, who were you with?

How did you get lost?

That's not it.

[Yan, Jiang Yi's daughter] I fell asleep.

I only saw Uncle Xie when I woke up.

Seems like Yan

didn't get lost on her own.

Someone must've taken her away on purpose.

But why?

I know now.

They did so to lure my sister away.

Let's split up

and find them as soon as possible.

Okay.

Take her with you.

Okay.

Yan, be a good girl.

Let's go.

Yi?

Yi!

Feiniang can't perform now.

Since Qing'er has already achieved her goal,

what's the point

of luring Yi away?

Great!

You wretch!

How could you be this careless?

Mother.

Let me take you to the room.

Yan?

Yan?

Yi?

Yi?

Wake up.

Where's Yan?

Where's Yan?

Yan is fine.

Don't worry.

Yi, what happened?

Yi's asthma was acting up.

I brought her here to rest.

Asthma?

Useless.

Of all the times

to suffer a relapse.

I'll hire a physician

to check on her.

Mother, there's no rush for you to get changed.

Let's take Yi back

to the mansion for now.

Why?

Are you heartbroken just because she's coughing?

Do you know how old I am?

Don't you think I'll catch a cold

if I don't change out of these wet clothes?

Go.

Bring me

my outfit.

Yes, Madam.

Why...

Why is there a man over here?

Mr. Meng?

Close the door.

Do not let anyone in.

Go!

Yes, Madam Zhu.

Close the door.

Do not let anyone in.

Yi.

What exactly is going on?

What is he doing here?

You wretch.

How dare you

have an affair with a troupe member?

You even told your sister

to cover up for you.

Mother, that's not true.

I came here to find Yan.

I have no idea

why he's here either.

Dear, trust me.

Trust you?

Your lover is already here.

We already caught you red-handed.

How dare you still deny it?

I'll kill you!

Madam Zhu!

You...

What do you mean by this?

What do I mean?

Ziyu,

you have

to get to the bottom of this.

If you

malign my sister

without finding out the truth,

you'll be embarrassed as well.

There are only three people in the room.

You're saying it's not Yi, huh?

Could it be you, then?

This has nothing to do with Si.

It has nothing to do with her?

Did you say you were maligned?

Are you saying that a grown man like him

entered the room by himself?

It was me.

I was the one meeting him in private.

It has nothing to do with them.

Meng and I were supposed to meet in private.

We didn't want Madam Yi

and Miss Si to bump into us.

Meng panicked.

He fell unconscious after falling off the bed by accident.

I begged them

to hide the truth for me.

That's why the misunderstanding occurred.

I'm truly sorry.

Yi.

I panicked just now.

I blamed you

before I figured out the whole story.

When Mr. Meng wakes up,

I'm going to get the truth out of him.

And then, I'll clear your name.

So, you still don't trust me, huh?

Miss Qing'er.

Where are you going?

Madam Zhu?

Mr. Zhu.

Mr. Meng.

Be honest with us

and tell us who you were supposed

to meet in private.

If you dare to lie,

the Zhu family

will make you bite off more than you can chew.

It was Madam Yi.

How could it be me?

I haven't even spoken to you before.

Madam Yi sent her maid

to notify me.

She said that she had admired me for a long time.

She said she would kick Caiyun Troupe

out of Lingshui

if I didn't meet her here.

That's nonsense.

Since when did I admire you?

Why are you trying to frame me?

Yi.

Let me ask you this.

You said Yi sent her maid

to notify you, right?

Was it Qing'er?

Miss, why are you asking me

when you know the answer?

Nonsense!

Qing'er just joined the family not long ago.

If Yi truly wanted

to do something discreet as such,

she'd send someone she could trust.

Why would she send Qing'er?

It was Qing'er.

She framed me.

She lured me here

using Yan.

Yan is over there.

Where?

Follow me.

Madam Yi, Yan is inside.

Feiniang.

You said

you came here to meet him in private.

But he said

he came here to meet Jiang Yi.

Who exactly is it?

Someone. Bring Qing'er here.

Yi.

How can I trust you now?

We've been married for many years.

Everyone in Lingshui

knows how well I treat you.

Each of you is sticking to your own version of the story.

We can only wait for Qing'er's arrival

to prove your innocence

and locate the culprit who tried to harm you.

Open the door.

Go inside.

Madam Yi instructed me

to send a letter to Mr. Meng.

She said I wouldn't arouse any suspicions

since I was new to the family.

She said she would send me

to Ling'an after tonight.

Ling'an is way better than Lingshui.

Qing'er, what are you saying?

I should've heeded Si's advice back then.

I shouldn't have taken you in.

I never expected you to be this devious

when you're this young.

Madam Yi.

I know that I'm indebted to you.

But this is a huge deal.

I cannot hide the truth.

Mr. Zhu, Madam Zhu,

just now, I was performing

on Miss Fei's behalf.

Everyone witnessed it.

How could I possibly

bring Madam Yi here?

That's right.

She was dancing

when I left my seat.

How could it be her?

Jiang Yi,

you shameless wretch.

To think that I believed you

to be a rule-abiding person

and that you would never do such a despicable deed.

I was truly blind.

Since it has come to this,

what else do you have to say for yourself?

You've ruined the reputation

of the Zhu family!

Mother!

That's not true!

You must trust me!

I didn't do it!

Be careful.

Qing'er,

although I don't know

how you misdirected us,

you have to remember this.

If you ruin my sister's reputation,

it'll ruin her life.

You should know fully well

how nice my sister treated you.

If you still have a conscience,

you should tell us

the truth.

If you still dare to tell blatant lies

and slander her,

I'll report you to the authorities.

If the authorities in Lingshui cannot handle it,

I'll report you to Ling'an City.

What?

Your sister has already committed

such a shameful deed.

You intend to report her to the authorities?

Have you lost your mind?

Madam Zhu,

Yi already said

that she didn't do it.

That means she didn't. Don't you understand?

You...

Miss Si.

Do you need to resort to this?

Well...

No matter what Yi has done,

she'll always be Yan's mother.

She's my wife.

Let's settle this

behind closed doors.

Don't spread the word.

Seriously?

Ziyu, listen.

My sister has said

that she didn't do it.

That means she didn't.

Do you understand?

Fine.

She said she didn't do it

and that Qing'er lured her here.

But Qing'er

was performing during that moment.

Does she have the ability to split herself?

Naturally, that's not the case.

[Yu'er]

Wait...

Why are there two Qing'ers?

It's because she's the one on the stage.

Now, I understand.

These two are twin sisters.

Madam Zhu,

I'm sure you understand now.

One of them was performing the dance on Feiniang's behalf.

The other

lured my sister here.

Their goal was to leave my sister

with no way to defend herself.

What a vicious plot.

Mr. Yu,

please send these two individuals

to the authorities.

And this person.

No!

Long Dan.

Not me!

It was her! She gave me the letter!

I didn't see

Madam Yi's face clearly.

She impersonated Madam Yi.

It was their fault!

It has nothing to do with me!

I can see why you're an actor.

You can act on the spot.

Qing'er,

now, all the blame

has been shifted to you and your sister.

Do you not wish to defend yourself?

Seems like my wife and I

were tricked by them.

You tried

to get close to me for the past few days.

I already told you

to drop the thought.

Yi was the only one I loved.

But you tried to harm her

with such a vicious plot.

At this point,

what else do you have to say for yourself?

It was my wishful thinking!

I came up with the plot myself!

It has nothing to do with other people!

It's the same for my sister!

She was kept in the dark!

She merely performed a dance

under my instruction!

It's all my fault!

Feiniang!

I'm begging you! Please!

I'll break your legs if you dare to step

into the Caiyun Troupe again!

Miss Fei! Yanniang!

It's just a stupid troupe.

You think I want to stay here?

If they don't welcome me,

I'll find my own place.

[Dressing Room, the hour of Hai] First, the lip balm was mixed

[Jiang Yi] with Chinese yam extract.

After that,

my dance shoes were slathered with pork lard.

When I gave it some thought,

I knew that I was their target.

That would make Meng Nan the prime suspect.

Indeed.

I found this note

in the multi-compartment box

he brought.

But the content of the note

doesn't prove anything.

That's why

I didn't take it out just now.

Someone else was pulling the strings indeed.

Miss Fei,

there's one thing I don't understand.

I heard

that you always cared about your reputation.

But you made a fake confession saying that you were

supposed to meet Meng Nan in private

in order to help my sister out.

Why did you do so?

I do care about reputation.

But my concerns extend beyond myself.

I also care about the Caiyun Troupe's reputation.

Meng Nan was a member of the Caiyun Troupe.

If I allowed him to get his way

and ruin your sister's future,

Caiyun Troupe

would end up as a laughing stock.

It'll be hard for us to perform again.

Miss Fei, thank you for your righteousness.

Yi.

Are you okay?

I'm fine.

Let's return.

Yan is at home.

I'm afraid

she won't sleep until she sees me.

Yi.

Yi, you're smoothing things over

for Yan's sake, am I right?

It's nothing major anyway.

It's good enough

as long as we send that troublemaker Qing'er

to the authorities.

Yi,

do you truly think

that the plot tonight

was hatched

by a lass we found in the mountains?

Although Madam Zhu

has a grudge against you,

she believed

that you would never

commit such a deed.

But Zhu Ziyu?

It appeared

he was on your side, defending you.

But really,

he was just making things worse with everything he said.

First, he angered Madam Zhu

and requested her to get changed.

His true goal

was to head to the wardrobe

and see if anyone was hiding inside.

Next,

although Feiniang already confessed

that she was meeting Meng Nan in private,

he insisted on waiting for Meng Nan to wake up

so that he could question him.

Lastly, when we tried to send

Qing'er and her sister to the authorities,

he tried his best to stop us...

Si.

That's enough.

Yi, I have to tell you the truth.

I know

that you understand everything.

But you're just not willing to admit it.

First, our carriage almost fell off the cliff.

Today, you were maligned for meeting a performer in private.

Who knows

what kind of despicable means

he'll resort to next?

I was wondering

if he would blackmail you

using Yan after this.

We've been married for seven years.

How could he disregard

our marital bond just like that?

Why is he doing this to me?

What exactly have I done wrong?

Yi,

how could this be your fault?

The villains are the ones at fault

for committing evil deeds.

Do not find faults

with yourself.

Zhu Ziyu

is too good at pretending.

I'm sure

you were just getting by

without pursuing responsibilities.

That's why you don't even know

why he tried to harm you.

Therefore, there's one thing

we need to get to the bottom of by tonight.

We need to make you see

the kind of person

you've gotten married to.

Zhu Ziyu met up with a woman.

Did you see what she looked like?

No.

She had bodyguards.

I didn't want to alert them to our presence.

That's why I came back to notify you all.

But

the getup of her maids

looked more posh

than noble ladies.

Therefore, that woman

is either rich or noble.

Could it be that Zhu Ziyu

has associated himself with a noble lady?

Perhaps he risked everything

to harm my sister

so that he could make the noble lady

his official wife.

Zhu Ziyu

is an educated individual,

yet he committed such despicable deeds.

They've been married for seven years.

How could he do this to her?

Commandant Xie, calm down.

It's just an assumption.

Sir.

Meng Nan is spreading rumors

that the young madam of the Zhu family

had an affair with him.

That animal!

Don't worry.

I'll capture him right away!

Let's go!

Yinlou

has a short temper, huh?

This is simple.

Just capture him.

He'll confess if you press a sword against his neck.

Did you forget that you're the Commandant

of the Capital Administration Office?

How could an official like you

act so recklessly?

Right now,

I'm just your bodyguard.

Give me the order,

and I'll execute it.

Is there a way

to bait both of these lurking dangers

into revealing themselves

at the same time?

Meng Nan

doesn't know the woman's identity.

He's an abandoned pawn too.

You want to lure her out by using him?

It's difficult.

But Zhu Ziyu

is hiding himself so well.

They have

an informant,

without a doubt.

[Zhu Mansion]

Here.

Qing'er, sit down.

What are you up to?

Don't worry.

I came here

because I have a question.

Did you do everything

under

Zhu Ziyu's instructions?

I told you already.

I did everything myself.

I don't expect you to rat him out anyway.

I just want to know

why he did so.

I have your indenture with me.

If you're willing to tell us

why Zhu Ziyu did all those things,

I'll return it to you.

You don't want your indenture, huh?

I'll tell you this, then.

I have another indenture with me.

It's your sister's.

What?

Why would you have

my sister's indenture?

My prediction was right.

Zhu Ziyu was using your sister

to blackmail you, right?

I know.

Your sister was a dancer

bought by Zhu Ziyu from elsewhere.

You two have been separated

for many years.

Both of you only acknowledged each other last month.

To my knowledge,

she's

your only kin.

You intend

to shoulder all of the blame.

But have you considered this?

Do you truly think Zhu Ziyu will let you off?

Do you think you can see your sister after this?

You're doing this for your sister's sake.

Me too.

Your sister was abused by Zhu Ziyu.

My sister suffered the same thing.

We're the same.

We're trying to rescue our kin here.

Isn't your sister doing well?

She's well-fed and well-dressed.

Is she?

You two framed her

when we were at Yunshui House.

Her life was almost ruined.

Only you and your sister know

about Zhu Ziyu's secrets.

You might know him better than me.

Think about this.

Do you think he'll keep you

or your sister alive

if he wants to ensure his safety?

My sister is his official wife.

Even so,

she's worthless to him.

What about you?

Do you think

he'll pay any regard to you?

You and your sister

have finally reunited after so long.

You two have suffered a lot.

Now, you two are reunited.

Is it worth it for you two to die here

after putting in so much effort?

Qing'er, I don't expect anything else.

I just hope

that you can think about

what I've said today.

Did she truly say that?

Yes.

Qing'er said it was her fault

from the start until the end.

She may not have confessed today.

But what if Jiang Si questions her every day?

We

cannot keep Qing'er alive.

Is this how you run the household?

How could you

let Qing'er escape?

You're useless.

And,

do you know that Meng fellow

has been spouting nonsense about you?

Now,

the whole city is saying that you're unfaithful

as you've had an affair with him.

You've utterly embarrassed

our family!

It's my fault.

Yi, what has this got to do with you?

Madam Zhu, you know this too.

Yi was framed.

Meng Nan is the one

spreading rumors out there.

How could you blame my sister

for the rumors?

Indeed. I shouldn't blame her for them.

I should blame you instead.

I didn't chase you out

on account of my in-laws.

Yi,

look at the amount of trouble your sister had caused

after she started to live with us.

I heard that she had done

a lot of brazen deeds

when she was in Ling'an.

As long as she's here,

our family can never obtain peace.

You have to go by today.

You're not welcome here!

Mother.

You can insult or scold me

how you like.

As your daughter-in-law, I accept my fate.

But my sister has come from afar.

No matter what,

you shouldn't speak of her this way,

let alone reprimand her.

I would've fallen off

a cliff and died

or been maligned to death at Yunshui House

had she not come to my rescue.

Do you detest my sister

because she rescued me?

Thus, you're unable to get your way

and make my husband marry another woman.

If so, you cannot pick

a girl who suits your every preference

and can deliver a male offspring for the Zhu family, right?

You!

So, you were just pretending

to be subservient and virtuous.

You're the same as your sister.

You two are equally defiant!

Fine.

Today, both of you

will get out of my house!

I'm the official wife

who's properly married into your family.

If you wish to chase me out,

you have to make my husband divorce me.

I've been married into the family for many years.

I prioritized my husband's and his parents' interests.

I have never fallen short in virtue, speech, demeanor, or duty.

Although I haven't given birth to a son,

I've given birth to a daughter.

I'm not without any descendants.

Under the Seven Grounds for Divorce,

which rule have I broken?

You...

The law of Zhou

punishes divorce without violating the Seven Grounds

with eighteen months in prison.

Madam Zhu,

if the Zhu family

dares to divorce my sister without any valid reasons,

our family will surely

report you to the authorities.

This isn't our first time doing it anyway.

By then, I assume your son

will be sent to prison

with his future ruined.

I suggest you weigh the pros and cons.

You don't get to divorce

your daughter-in-law as per your will.

You!

You two, get out.

Scram!

Yi, let's go.

Mr. Xie.

If you wish to live,

you better follow my instructions.

I got it.

Yan, come on!

Yan, do you like this?

I used to tell myself

to endure everything for the sake of harmony.

But only now do I realize

that lifting my restraint is actually liberating.

Yi.

Thank you.

Silly girl,

everyone has limits,

regardless of what they can bear.

You are mine.

Yan as well.

Mother!

Mother!

I'm here!

Come and play with us!

Let's continue.

Come on, Yan.

Here.

Mother,

please don't be angry.

It was wrong of me to ask you

to bring up this matter.

Ziyu.

They're sisters.

Naturally, they share the same bond.

You and I are the closest.

We have to stay united

so that we can keep them

in check.

Yi promised

that she would send her sister back

after the Water Festival.

But now, she's acting out of character.

She even talked back to you

for her sister's sake.

Do I

have to divorce her for real?

Who told you to divorce her?

Weren't you the one

who kept telling me to divorce her?

Silly man.

I was just saying. How could you take it to heart?

I was once a daughter-in-law myself.

I'll be honest with you.

Apart from being sonless,

there really isn't any fault

to be found with Yi.

You can't find

another daughter-in-law

in Lingshui

who's as capable as her.

If so, Mother, why did you

still pick on her?

What's wrong with that?

Your grandmother passed away not long ago.

I've finally become

a mother-in-law myself.

Can't I show off

my authority for once?

Sometimes,

I'm just angry at you.

Who told you to always take her side?
