looking forward to this

for a very long time

because it is finally time
to go racing

as we kick off
with the Mazda MX-5 Cup

live on IMSA Radio.

When I was a little kid
growing up in motorsport,

I don't remember seeing
very many women

in positions of power.

[reporter] Stock car race
drivers are a special breed

of American folk hero.

They have always been men.

The history of motorsport
was so man-centric.

Men were competing
and women were grid girls.

There was this culture
propagated of,

women are there as eye candy.

So to change that,
to shift that away

is exceedingly difficult.

[Shea Holbrook] For six years,
I was the only female

in the series I was racing in.

I had a very steep
uphill battle.

[announcer] Shea's worked
her way up nicely.

There's been a changeover.

[announcer] Boys, move over.

The lady is coming through.

We're seeing women shatter
glass ceilings and barriers

like we've never seen before.

[announcer] Danica Patrick wins

I see the world in motorsports
for women changing.

We're chipping away at it,
and we're turning heads.

[Shea Adam] The MX-5 Cup is
leading the charge

by bringing more female drivers
into the sport.

[Heather] As women,
we have to assert our dominance

extra, it seems like.

So that's how it's gonna go.

I am over this!

I'm done with 90s
dropping below the A-frame.

I don't like it.

One thing
that has not happened is,

there has not been a female
winner in MX-5 Cup history.

So the goal is to develop
a female champion.

We're gonna drive up there
and do anything that it takes.

fighting for their life.

We have a championship
that we're all fighting for.

And I know that that was wrong.

It just sucks
because it was my fastest lap.

who just blatantly took me out.

an emotional roller coaster.

With all the eyes
on the MX-5 Cup

and being
one of the new drivers,

it's a lot of pressure for sure.

Before now,
I've only raced go-karts.

[announcer] Sally Mott going
for a wild ride

as she tries to pick back up...

[announcer] Sally Mott gets set

to lead all the boys
to the green here.

down the back straightaway.

And somehow,
she's still driving.

In karting, I'm up here, right?

I'm racing to win.

Mott won another race,

which is three in a row for her.

Whereas in car racing,
I started at the bottom.

a 19-year-old girl in Crawford

who's working very hard
to make her mark

in this male-dominated sport.

This win means she'll be
joining us for the 2024 season.

[Sally] When I won
the scholarship, I was like,

oh, my God,
they just called my name.

What did I just get myself into?

[atmospheric music]

This is my rookie season,
so I want to make it count.

But when you're new
and a girl, even,

you got to get that respect,
right?

You have to earn the respect.

I'm not just striving
to be the best girl driver

but to be the best driver.

I just graduated high school.

I'm not planning
to go to college.

I want to be a race car driver.

This is my plan A.
There's no plan B.

So I'm all in
on this dream of mine,

and I'm just determined
to make it work.

[Sally] I think I have
a very good coach...

my dad.

[Robby] Be careful as you push.

[Sally] He started racing
when he was eight years old.

Started in karting.

And he's driven
basically everything...

formula cars, sports cars,
stock cars.

I'm...I'm not even, like,
scratching the surface.

But anyways, he's taught me
everything I know about racing.

He's been my driver coach,
my life coach, my mental coach.

He's basically poured
everything that he's gained

in his 40-plus years of racing
and just dumped it onto me.

So what are you thinking about
going into this race?

What's your number one goal
right now?

[Sally] Mental focus.

Everything from where my mindset
should be on race day

to what I should eat,
preparing for race day,

to how I should work out.

[Robby] So all the years
I've raced, you know,

it's like, go to a race,

and then as soon as that race
is over, it's the next race.

I'm plugging in that track.

[Sally] I feel like he's kind of
living through me a little bit.

Not in a bad way.
Like, he loves it, right?

It's great because we're a team.

[Robby] Take everything that
you're doing and ramp it up.

[Connor] The MX-5 Cup is
a professional race car series.

It's the absolute pinnacle
of action at the racetrack

because of how close
the racing is.

[John] Side by side,
two pairs of two.

These are very small,
very nimble sports cars.

[Connor] The fastest car
doesn't always win.

And you can outthink people
if you're not as fast.

[Shea Adam] The MX-5 cup is
a career-defining race series.

This highly competitive
battleground

attracts young drivers
who come to prove themselves

in the world of motorsports.

It's a place to hone skills
and gain exposure.

[Gresham] It's so tough here.

It's bumper-to-bumper,
side-to-side racing.

[dramatic music]

[Westin] It's really about
playing the game,

making the passes
at the right time,

and sharpening
your racetrack skills.

[Heather] It's just so hard
to have a strategy for races

because things just
immediately go out the window.

[John]
Huge incident, huge incident.

Oh, my goodness,
he's hit the wall.

Start of the race.

Oh, my goodness me,
it was a huge one.

The drivers are all trying
to earn real cash money.

Still got over
$1.2 million up for grabs.

The overall winner
take $250,000.

You know
it's gonna be entertaining.

I'm so excited for this.

different series,

ranging from the top levels
of IMSA to NASCAR.

No matter how long
I've been racing in the series,

every time I come out here,
I always have,

you know, something to learn.

[Aaron] We all have
that killer instinct

and that drive to go win.

It's so cutthroat.

It's a high-intensity
chess match at 130 mile an hour.

[John] Jared Thomas

And it's almost three

[Shea Adam] We've only ever had
one repeat champion

in series history.

That's unheard of.

out of the final corner.

And Thomas ahead
of Max Opalski on the line.

[Shea Adam] And you never know
who's going to win.

[John] Oh, my goodness.

We can call this
for Jared Thomas.

His hands go up.

That is the championship.

Heather Hadley, back for
year two of the Mazda series.

But what is different about it
this year

as opposed to last year when you
were coming in completely green,

didn't know the cars,
didn't know the tracks?

Do you feel better prepared?

[Heather] Yeah, absolutely.

The only thing that's
really different this year

is a new team.

So that's gonna be
an adjustment.

I'm feeling a lot more
confident than last year

-at Daytona for sure.
-Yeah.

-[Shea Adam] Yeah, you too.

My name is Heather Hadley,
and I'm a race car driver.

[rock music]

I discovered that racing was
my passion at nine years old.

[singer] ♪ One, two, three ♪

♪ All eyes on me... ♪

It's just...
it's consumed my life

and, unfortunately,
my family's as well.

[laughs]

My childhood gave me
a unique perspective,

I think, on a lot of things
because my parents are divorced.

They divorced when I was two.

So I was constantly going
back and forth between my mom,

and then I would,
on the weekends,

just go to my dad.

My dad would take
the weekends off,

and we would just run around
and do whatever.

And that's when
he took me go-karting.

[Damon]
She got in her first go-kart,

and she was applauded
when she came off that track.

And Heather's like,
"Daddy, I want to race!"

I go, "Let's go racing,
Heather!"

You know?

And then she's like, "Dad,
the tire came off," you know?

I go, "I know.

I'm really sorry, Sweetie Pie."

I don't know anything
about mechanics.

I'm a carpenter.

So it was a learning experience,
right, for both of us.

[car whooshing]

She did 107 races in six months
and won 104 of them.

So we knew
we were on to something.

[Heather] We went every single
Friday for six months,

and then eventually
bought my first go-kart

and raced go-karts
for five years.

Then after that,
we bought a legend car.

And it just progressed
to be where I am today,

which is racing in MX-5 cup.

[Shea Adam] The 54 car started
nearly dead last

but is now on the verge
of breaking into the top 10.

[singer] ♪ I got a number ♪

♪ I got a name ♪

♪ I got a target ♪

♪ It has a face... ♪

[Heather] When I started racing
in MX-5 Cup last year,

I was giving other drivers
too much space

because I was just terrified
on track

and didn't want to make contact
with anybody

and was doing
everything in my power

to be nice to everybody.

I wanted to be friends
with everybody.

I didn't want
to piss anybody off.

And I've learned, like, OK,
it's just going to happen.

You're going to piss
somebody off.

It's gonna be incidental,
but you gotta claim that space.

Last year,
I ended up 16th overall

in the 2023 championship.

This year, I would love
to break into the top 10.

If I'm able to show
that kind of progress,

it will push my career forward.

Success is important to me,
and I want to be finishing

consistently top 5, top 10.

Anything really below that is
what I would deem unsuccessful.

-[Sally] How have you been?

I haven't actually
got to talk to you.

[Heather] Good.

I know that we're, like,
technically competing for money

every weekend,
so we're, like, obviously

even extra, like, competitors
on track.

-[Sally] Yeah.
-But, like, still, off track,

like, if you ever need
to, like, ask me anything,

anything, I'm here.

-Seriously.
-Thank you. Appreciate it.

[Sally] There's a prize for top
finishing female each round.

And since there's only
two of us this season,

that makes us even more
competitive with each other.

But when I see her,
I get excited.

I'm like, yeah, like, we're
gonna work together, you know?

We're the only two girls
in the field.

Let's kick some butt.

[Shea Adam] When you drive
through the tunnel at Daytona

under turn four, it opens up

into this magnificent arena
of motorsport.

[engine revs]

This series is
such a destination.

People want to race here.

They want to be on these tracks.

They want to be competing.

Over the course
of seven race weekends,

our drivers compete at some
of the most iconic race tracks.

Each weekend consists
of two practice sessions,

one qualifying session,
and two races.

And every single team here
wants to win the championship.

These cars are not
the big stock cars.

They are not the cars
running at 200 miles an hour.

It's almost, like, taboo

because they shouldn't be
on this superspeedway.

But the racing is better

than what you get
in either of those.

[Shea Holbrook] Guys, we're
gonna have a quick meeting.

OK, do we have everybody?

One, two, three...

I'm Shea Holbrook, and I'm
the team owner at BSI Racing.

Day one is always
kind of high energy,

probably some high stress.

OK, guys, welcome to 2024.

A little bit different
this year.

Same people, same feel,
same processes,

a little different branding,

same loud voice.

[laughter]

Racing, in a roundabout way, has
been a part of my entire life.

I have been a driver.

I've been a coach.

Last year, I was a team manager.

But I'm very excited
because this is my first year

being a team owner
in this series.

At the end of the year,

there's the overall
championship.

There's the rookie championship.

There's the team championship.

You better believe that BSI
will be after all of them.

This might be
the most competitive field

that we've ever had.

Class of 2024, this might be
the most competitive

MX-5 Cup has ever seen.

You know, motorsports just...

it's a difficult industry
to be in.

It's a constant grind.

And it costs a lot of money.

So luckily...

[Shea Holbrook] My husband
and I are homegrown.

We did not have the financial
support and resources

to kick-start us.

I mean, we did all of this
completely on our own.

Every driver has
a spotter for Daytona.

Spotters have to be
in the box, in the bird stand,

in order for cars
to go on track.

When you take on
becoming a team owner,

it's a pressure cooker.

There's a lot that rides
on the decisions that you make.

The weight on my shoulders
to make sure

that we have the right
people implemented

is one of the hardest parts
of my job.

Drivers are paying
for their seat in the series.

The coaching staff,
the engineering staff,

all of that has to be
really cohesive to sell

the best possible product
to the customer,

the race car driver.

I'm the person that you come to
when you need things.

I am always gonna be
that person,

whether it's a compliment,
an argument,

something negative,
something positive,

whatever it might be.

Drivers rely on me to do well,

and we also rely on our drivers
for the best possible success.

Drivers, we got
to make our way together.

We're a special group of people.

I don't know if that's good
or if that's bad,

but we are a special group
of people in the sense

that we're so family-oriented.

These crew guys,
they've helped me raise my kids.

Now, I have two young kids,
and they're aunts

and uncles to my children.

And you want to take care
of your people, you know?

MX-5 Cup is my life
and my career

and my business and my family.

And I'm gonna do
whatever it takes to win

so that my team can be the best.

[upbeat music]

I was a driver for a while.

And right off the bat,

running in this series
is intimidating.

There's so much emotion
in the car.

It's so loud.

The pressure in the car changes
as cars pass.

So every sense
we have as a human

is, like, pushed way further
than you're normally used to.

And that's really hard
to overcome.

We got Sally coming here
for the first time.

Pretty daunting.

You're gonna have
some trials and tribulations

there in the beginning.

It's very unlikely
that you're gonna come in

and kick the door in
and just succeed.

She's just gonna have a lot
going through her head.

And we're throwing her
off the deep end this weekend.

[dramatic music]

Take a deep breath
when you get your helmet on.

is the best you can do.

We can replace a car.

Today is qualifying
and race day.

Qualifying is so short,
and there's so much pressure.

Your fastest lap time
in qualifying

determines your starting
position for race one.

And then your second fastest
lap time

will determine
your starting position

for the second race.

Are you nervous?

I just need you
to be a little bit more,

like, precise on your timing.

[Heather] Yeah, yeah.

[Shea Holbrook]
Now you're nervous.

[both laugh]

Qualifying, it's just
always been something

that I've struggled with.

For me, it's hard
to just come out of the gate

doing super well.

[Sally] As one of the only girls
in the series,

I want to be competitive.

It's just a matter
of going on track

and surviving, staying safe.

This is nothing
you hadn't done before.

[Sally] Sure, but you're gonna
be in my ear, right?

[Brad]
Yes, ma'am, the whole time.

[John] Beautiful weather
here at Daytona

as the drivers make their way
to the track

for their first
qualifying session.

[Shea Adam] The best part
about the series

is that it doesn't matter
the speed of the cars.

It's how you finesse
through the corners,

how you can keep your car
going that tiny bit quicker

than the person ahead of you,
because then you can draft up

behind them,
you can get alongside them,

and you can make the pass
before going into the next turn.

I need you to work with the two
cars behind you a little bit.

Don't wait for them or anything.

But I'm trying to get them

a first two laps
that are decent.

[Connor] I'll probably just go
at the beginning with the pack.

And Neudorf has to stay with me.

OK.

[Connor] Because I'm not
gonna push him.

I know.

Whether you're in a pack
with your teammates

or you're racing in a pack
with your competitors,

you have to utilize each other,

and you have to work together
to achieve the fast laps,

to advance throughout the pack.

You need to follow Connor, OK?

My recommendation would be
to stick with Neudorf

almost no matter what
because he's gonna try

and go wherever Connor goes.

But if it gets to the point
where you're not...

it's too much chaos for you,
you make your own decision

-and let your spotter help you.
-[Heather] OK.

But try not to leave
our teammates.

Try not to.

[Heather] The Miata being
a momentum car,

it forces you
to have to use each other.

We have that ability to push
each other and bang walls

and make contact
pretty much everywhere.

And drivers take
advantage of that.

Connor Zilisch.

He was pretty much already done
with his qualifying session,

and he just decided
to help me on the last lap.

[Connor] I had already gotten
my lap done.

I was P1 in qualifying.

And I had the option to either,
you know, push Heather

and, you know, help her
get a good lap...

When you don't really
have someone to push you

and you're not
right behind someone,

your lap's kind of killed
at Daytona.

So, yeah, I stayed out even
though I wasn't on a good lap

and pushed Heather,
and she qualified

somewhere in the top 10
because of it.

[John] Heather Hadley has
her best ever qualifying

for BSI in eighth.

Turns out we know
what we're doing.

[Damon] See Heather's time?

One thing that has not happened
in MX-5 Cup history is,

there has not been
a female winner in MX-5 Cup.

As a female owner
in the series, I'll tell you,

there's nobody that wants that
more than Heather and I.

If we can push her to that,

you know, top step
of the podium,

that's an ultimate goal.

And we'll make sacrifices
to do that and get there.

I'm starting P23, not where
I want to be, obviously.

It didn't feel straight, like,
going on the banks and stuff,

like something wasn't quite
connected in the front.

I didn't really tell anybody
on the radio.

I didn't think
it was worth mentioning.

And, honestly, I don't know
what to feel for at Daytona.

I've never been here.

[Robby] Yeah, it looks like
it's just leaking

from the pump, Sparky.

It looks like it might have
a trans pump leak.

Which is not bad.
We can adjust that.

So that's not a big deal.

We just want to make sure
we didn't lose too much fluid.

I'm learning now, you know,
everything's worth mentioning

because, obviously,
there was some major issues.

So in qualifying,
she didn't get the best lap

that she could have.

It happens.

My only thing was, I was like,
hey, stay low in two

because, like,
you kept going up high,

and people would pass you,
like, five laps in a row.

I know.

I was driving the best I could,

but it wasn't good enough
for my dad.

My dad has
very high expectations.

And, you know, basically,
he was telling me,

like, you need to get
your head out of your ass,

and, like,
you need to dig deeper

than you've ever dug before.

I think each session,
I'm improving.

a little bit of pressure

just to want
to represent women well.

to create, like, pacts

and stuff, you know.

Let's show the world that,
you know, female drivers

can also haul butt, right?

We can...we can drive.

[Heather] You need to have
friends in this series

and not enemies.

The more you can have,
and even if they're

part of different teams,
anything, like,

hey, that'll help you
get to the finish line.

When I was pregnant,
we were watching the Indy 500

with Danica Patrick
almost winning and thinking,

wouldn't that be cool
if Sally were a race car driver,

you know, and here she is.

It makes my heart race
because she's out there alone

against mostly men
in this man's world and...

you know, and this is one
of the most intense things

that you can do in life.

I mean, you're putting
your life on the line.

There's a lot of pressure.

You just hope
everybody plays nice.

I know, I'm gonna keep my eye
out on the start

and just look ahead.

First two laps,
keep your head on a swivel.

I mean, just pay close attention

what's going on in front of you.

So I make sure
that car is ready to go

every time it goes on track.

So when it comes off track,

it's very stressful.

These guys are very competitive
when they get in there.

It's kind of overwhelming.

for our first official race

of the season here at Daytona.

The field is pretty stacked.

There's so much competition.

Honestly, I don't feel entirely
comfortable in the car yet.

I'm just gonna try to make up
as much time as I can

and just avoid the incidents

because I know there's gonna be

a lot of incidents
in front of me.

I feel like I have

There's obviously a perception
from last year, right?

And that makes it
really hard for you

to get any help

because everyone's like,
why would I help her?

She was in back last year.

It's gonna take you proving

that you can actually
run up there and be up there

for these guys
to really choose you

when they're picking
a draft partner.

Last year, I definitely started
towards the back

of the field with a lot to learn

and slowly started
making improvements.

But I think a lot of drivers
still have that idea of me.

But the pressure to do well
isn't just about me.

I've had this amazing
support system.

My family has
sacrificed themselves

for me to be able to race.

[Damon]

[Heather] I'm good.

I'm just lucky to have a family
that dropped everything

and put their lives on hold
to help me pursue

my dream of becoming
a professional race car driver.

[Heather] And that's
a crazy dream to have.

If you're a realist,
there's no way

you'd be like,
I would choose this,

because there's no way
you just keep coming back

and putting your money into it

just because the odds are
so against you.

Your first day in your kart.

[Heather] Yeah, the helmet
looks giant on me.

Well, they didn't have
a helmet that fit you for years.

[Heather] I don't question
at all whether my sacrifices

are worth it
because it's my dream.

The only moments
where I'll question

whether the sacrifice
was worth it

is when it comes to my parents.

[Damon]
So I built that mother-in-law,

or what Heather calls the Shoe.

I was a little old man
who lived in the Shoe

because of the collapse
in the economy in 2008.

[soft dramatic music]

They put a foreclosure notice
on the house,

and there was no work.

So I decided, you know what?

Let's build the Shoe.

And we'll live in the Shoe,
and we'll rent the house.

And we were able
to save the home.

[Heather] The Shoe had
everything you could need

to live packed into one space.

And then we would just lay
the mattress on the floor...

-[Damon] Right.
-[Heather] ...every night.

So, yeah, we'd just fold it up
during the day.

[Damon] Yeah, I'd stand it up...
I'd stand it up...

Stand it up, just be able
to walk around.

-Put it out of the way. Yeah.

[Heather]
These buildings right here

are reflective of the support

you've always had for me
and the love

you've always had for me.

And they're a symbol
of pushing through

and not succumbing to dark times

and, you know, making it
to where I am now.

Racing is never a guarantee.

It can be taken away
at any second.

So that support from my family
is something that

I really want to give back
to them,

to make it all worth it
in the end.

competitors do turn off

that extra smart switch
in their brain,

and they do allow themselves
to go a little bit more crazy.

They make the passes
that maybe you wouldn't attempt

if it was race one.

and she just ran me right off.

It just felt a little bit
like betrayal.

The incident
on the track sucked.

What Sally's most hurt about
right now

is that Heather
won't even look at her.

She didn't apologize for it.

She didn't even acknowledge it.

And that really just hurt
Sally's feelings.
