he thrives in baseball

is, like, being so intense,
the way that he is.

Years ago, Fred gifted
Freddie a necklace with a cross,

and it has his mom's hair in the cross.

So Freddie never takes that off,
even while he's playing.

It actually broke right before
the World Series.

And we had to, like, overnight it
to the jeweler,

and then, like, they got it back
right before Game One.

But we're like,
"We need this back. ASAP." [chuckles]

So young when she passed away.
He was only ten.

But he said one of his earliest memories
that he remembers

was that he was at
one of his super young games.

His mom was sitting, like,
in the outfield,

and he hit a home run, and it literally,
like, almost hit his mom.

And I guess she was just jumping up
and down, like,

freaking out, like, so happy.

Um...

Ugh, it's gonna make me wanna cry,

but I feel like she was probably doing
that in heaven when he hit his grand slam.

Baseball's such a crazy game.

You can be like Aaron Judge,
you're incredible all year.

But it's, like, impossible
to be good the whole time.

You know, it's like you get hot
at a certain time

and you can't control
when you're hot or not,

it's just how the game goes.

It's rough. So...

You never know what could happen.

this is a literal must-win
for the New York Yankees.

and for the Dodgers up three games

I knew it was gonna be loud.
The fans are going to be into it.

[Edman] It does feel like a, you know,
very intimate stadium.

You can kinda sense the fans'
presence right on top of you.

[crowd cheering]

[Volpe] Game Four,
I was looking around the dugout.

Every single guy wanted the at bat,
every single guy wanted the ball.

And we were gonna do whatever it took.

[Joe Davis] For the Yankees,
the 26-year-old rookie, Luis Gil,

starts with the Yankees' season
on the line.

I think that he has the stuff
to be a potential Cy Young winner.

In our pregame meeting, it wasn't so much,

"Hey, we're rookies
doing the World Series Game Four."

It was more like, "Let's go win.
Let's go after these guys because we can."

Hey, we're gonna work together.

If you don't like a pitch I call,
just ask me.

I'll talk to you
and I'll tell you the truth.

But... But...
we're not gonna go back and forth.

[Davis] Dave Roberts
sends his lineup to the plate.

Ohtani leading things off,
and then Betts and Freeman.

[crowd cheering]

[Nelson] And here comes the pitch
from Luis Gil.

[John Smoltz]
See, that's the only problem.

This is his first home postseason start.

The adrenaline is rushing.

[Davis] Ohtani sends a pop fly
into shallow center field.

We're off and running in Game Four
with a pop out to short.

[Roberts] Obviously Shohei was hurt,
compromised,

and he wasn't swinging the bat great.

But to still hang in there, that was huge.

[Jon Sciambi] And the batter now
will be Mookie Betts.

That's poked down the line and
a fair ball into the right field corner.

[cheering]

[Nelson] The ball finally gets to Soto.

Mookie will stand up at second with
a one-out double in the top of the first.

[Davis] Freddie Freeman at the plate.

Trying to start it early
for the Dodgers again.

He ended Game One, he started Game Three.

A little rain falling here in Game Four.

He's up there with Betts at second.

[Chelsea] Get out.

[Sciambi] Slammed, and a ball drilled,
right field, curling back, gone!

simply unstoppable!

And not to say that I felt

but I thought we had the game in hand.

The bottom of the first is about to begin.

You know, everyone was talking about,
"You just need to score first."

Sure, we wanna get a lead,
but we can win if we don't too.

And we got no choice right now.

for the rookie Ben Casparius.

It wasn't that long ago
Ben was in the minors,

and here he is starting a potential
World Series clincher for the Dodgers.

Betts in the corner.

That was really wild. I have never
experienced anything like that.

what he was really trying to do.

my life I've ever wanted to fight someone.

So Betts went right into the corner
and the wall.

[Waldman] Well, he's got the ball.
You can see it. He's got it in his glove.

The fan in the Yankee uniform is
prying the ball out of Mookie's glove.

[Nelson] I mean, absolutely absurd.

We knew from that moment
that they were going to do

anything in their power
to get into our heads.

have their first base runner.

It's a broken record on this,
but somebody's gotta give a jolt

to this lineup and to this stadium.

Aaron Judge comes up.

[Monday] You don't throw that fastball
in a good spot right here,

you're looking at tie game.

[umpire] Ball, that's off the plate!

[Sterling] Outside, ball four.
Judge walks.

And the Yankees have the tying runs on.

[Davis] To the plate comes Stanton.

This guy's been one of their best hitters
all postseason.

Now, here's Mark Prior.

The pitching coach to come out.

[Roberts] In the postseason,
you gotta turn into a street fighter.

And with street fighting,
there are no rules.

These guys have long arms,
and if they get extended,

they're gonna really hurt you,
so you have to crowd 'em.

[Nelson] Casparius's
first-pitch fastball up and in.

[Roberts] You don't try to hit anybody
or let alone hurt anybody,

but you just can't have them have
their way and lean out over the plate.

That's just baseball.

[Davis] And another walk.

[Wells] I just felt like, in that game,
they have the pressure,

they have to win one more,

and just go up there and enjoy it
and fight to the last pitch.

[Nelson] Hit in the air,
right center field.

Kiké Hernández on the run.
He's at the wall.

He cannot make the catch!

It bounces off the wall.

[crowd cheering]

It ends up being
a double for Austin Wells.

[Sterling] Volpe goes to third,
and they're gonna hold him.

Yankees have second
and third and one man out.

[Davis] Here's Alex Verdugo.

Freeman's got it, takes it to the bag.
They do get Volpe home.

That's a run they absolutely had to have.

[Rizzo] They played really well

and they had massive hits, obviously,
but we have that "one day" mentality.

"Just win today."

We have the pitching, we have the bullpen,
we have the offense.

[Sciambi] We go to
the bottom of the third.

It's the Dodgers 2 and the Yankees 1
here in Game Four.

[Nelson] Now Aaron Judge to the plate.

and the Yankees have 'em cornered.

their season on thin ice.

my great-grandfather,

The way he got to know

but I knew I barreled it good.

And then right when I realized
it was over the fence, I blacked out.

It was amazing.

the top blow off Yankee Stadium

in a World Series game.

The energy. You know, the noise.

The excitement.

[Davis] A jolt through the stadium
and through this series.

[Freeman] The players and the fans
are just feeding off each other.

They just kept building on it in that game
and kept scoring more and more.

[Sciambi] 7-4, New York,
but now it's Gleyber Torres.

[Sterling] A fly ball to deep right.

Betts going back. That ball is gone!

[Sciambi] Gleyber Torres!
A three-run homer over the wall.

And the Yankees have broken it open!

It's 10-4 here in the Bronx.

[Rizzo] You got the Bleacher Creatures
doing their thing, screaming.

You got beer flying everywhere.
We didn't want to go home.

We wanted to force a Game Seven,

but to force a Game Seven,
we had to win Game Four.

[Davis] Judge hooks a line drive
to left field, and that's in for a hit.

It's just a contagious feeling

when you have everybody,
one through nine, in that lineup

all laser locked in like that.

[Davis] It's 11 runs for the Yanks.

[Roberts] I started to see
Judge come to life.

It just seemed like he was
a little bit more patient,

seeing the ball a little bit longer,

and that's something
that started to scare me.

[Eduardo Pérez] To be able to get
not only a base hit and an RBI,

for Aaron Judge, this is huge.

It takes a lot of weight
off his shoulders.

[Sterling] And we go to the ninth inning.

The Yankees have a very safe 11-4 lead.

[Davis] Dodgers down to
their last strike in Game Four.

Into center field.

- Judge comes on. He's got it!
- [crowd cheers]

[Sterling] Ball game over. Yankees win.

[Sterling] The Yankees win!

[dramatic music plays]

[fan] We're not dead yet.

[Nelson] There's beer being thrown
around Yankee Stadium in celebration.

The Bombers will stave off elimination
for at least one more night.

[crowd cheering]

[Judge] Look, we know what's at stake.
You know...

You know, we're playing for our lives, so...

Just because our backs
are against the wall,

it hasn't changed our mindset, especially
with this group, who's been through a lot.

All we gotta focus on
is winning another game. That's it.

[clicks tongue] Hi, honey.

[all chuckling]

That was unbelievable.

- I ain't never seen that in my life.

but the Yankees came back with a jab.

And all of a sudden, you kinda feel like
that mo has shifted towards the Yankees.

when you give 'em an inch,
they take a mile.

That door slithered open, the Yankees
have a chance to kick it down.

[Volpe] I feel like
we were really confident

in what knew what
we can do if we executed.

Getting it back to LA. That was our goal.

[Nelson] And it's a matchup
of these teams' aces:

Gerrit Cole for the Yankees
and Jack Flaherty for the Dodgers

in a Game One rematch.

[Nelson] You expect Ohtani
to be aggressive here tonight

as he tries to make his mark
on this World Series.

Ohtani swings and lifts it high
in the air, shallow right center field.

Aaron Judge calling for it
and catching it.

who'll step on the bag on his own.

Now, the guy who's been the toughest task

for the Yankees so far
in this World Series, Freddie Freeman.

[Davis] You talk about sending
a message. He's done just that.

Two-run home runs
in the first inning of both games here.

[Smoltz] Yeah, he has been locked in.

He'll be wanting to be aggressive
on the first pitch.

He usually is.

I felt so ready to go for Game Five.

Body felt good. Felt like, you know,
ball was coming out good and everything

and felt in a really good place that day.

Flaherty's gotta set one of his own.

Yeah, the fans bring
a different level to it.

They bring the edge where you know
you can't fool 'em, you can't trick 'em,

and they want to see winners.

But these fans are faithful.
You know, they appreciate the hard work.

And, you know, they're cheering us on
from the very first pitch to the last out.

[Smoltz] First pitch, I would imagine,

will tell you a lot
about Aaron Judge and tonight.

a lot of people in the other clubhouse

putting together a different game plan

[Verdugo] Definitely felt like
we started getting some momentum.

Driving the ball a little bit better too.

And we were where we wanted to be.

trying to get a flight back to LA earlier
to get some rest for a Game Six,

and then thinking about
who's potentially available to pitch

because those guys had all the momentum.

[Davis] So here comes
the man of the moment in Los Angeles,

this isn't what we envisioned
at the start of this game.

And the fans were into it again.

And the bases will be loaded.

[Davis] It was gonna be a tough play,
but one the Yankees should make.

[Roberts] Kiké just does a great job
of bending out and getting in Jazz's way

and then caused a bad throw.

That's something that doesn't show up
in the box score,

but that's something that was a big,
game-changing play.

[Volpe] Kiké made a good play
getting in my throwing lane,

and I just made a bad throw.

It's something I gotta live with.

[Davis] This has been one of the big
differentiators throughout this series,

So I think when Cole saw Mookie

he kinda just had déjà vu and was like,

"Okay, that's the same ball.
Rizzo's gonna get to first."

[Rizzo] As a first baseman,

the ones that are spinning,
those are probably the hardest plays.

So, I just played the hop conservatively,
and I looked up to flip it to Gerrit,

and there was just a miscommunication
on both of our parts.

The fundamentals on this team
are just so bad.

Because, you know, we were stretched
pretty thin with our staff.

But I just felt our guys did enough
to earn the right

for me to exhaust every option
to play to win that game, that night,

and not look towards a potential Game Six.

[Davis] Dave Roberts, looks like,

Blake Treinen's ready to come in as early
as he's been deployed in this postseason.

[Roberts] We couldn't give up
any more runs,

so I went to Treinen
to stop that momentum.

so that aspect caught me off guard
a little bit, but I was A-OK.

7-6 in the most preposterous way.

[Dodgers clamoring]

[Nelson] Bottom of the eighth.
The Dodgers now lead the Yankees 7-6.

But New York has exactly the part
of the order due up that they want.

[Treinen] I looked at Doc
and I was like, "I'll keep going."

And he was like, "All right."

My calf had, like, cramped up
a little bit on me that previous inning

and I had our trainer, Greg...

I was like, "Greg,
you gotta loosen me up, it's cramping."

And I just prayed for myself, like,
"Lord, we scratched all the way back.

Let me put up another zero
for these guys."

[Davis] One gone in the eighth
and Aaron Judge.

This crowd's so nervous.

Eerily silent in here.

Judge trying to bring them to life.

and I'm thinking,

The go-ahead run is on.

And Giancarlo Stanton's coming up.

It's too many pitches.
They've got to take him out.

[Davis] Will it be against Treinen,

dip into that bullpen?

[Treinen] So Doc's walking out, gives me
the hands kinda like pumping down.

"Calm down." Like, "We're gonna talk."

[Roberts] I wanted to slow the game down,
hit pause and just check in on Blake.

[Treinen] Then he comes out
and he's like, "How are you feeling?"

I was like, "I feel fine, Doc."

And he was like,

And I was like, "Absolutely, like,

[Roberts] Wanted to look him in the eye,
put my hands on him, see how he felt.

And I was like, "All right."

[Roberts] I'm on the top step
watching his demeanor,

knowing what I told him.

But it was one pitch,
stuff was still good.

I look at Freddie in the distance...

[Freeman] And I'm just staring at Doc.

Doc looks at me, and I said, "Mm-mmm."

I just shook my head and I was like,
"Let's die with Blake on this mound.

We have to."

[Roberts] Freddie's been in this game
for a long time.

I trust his feel, his heartbeat,
his gut, all that stuff.

I trusted him that particular moment,
'cause I was wavering.

And I just decided to stand down.

And I said, "This is his guy."

Blake Treinen giving it all he's got.

special moment of my career,

to have gone two and a third
and hopefully have bought ourselves

who is warming up in the pen.

and Walker sits down behind me.

He's like,

And I was like "Look, Walk,
we're in a really good place."

He's like "All right.
If things get wonky, I'll be ready."

I'm like "Okay."
So, I let Doc and everybody know.

[Roberts] And I tell them to
text Walker back, "No, thank you."

Because he was our Game Seven starter.

He had just pitched two days ago.

So then, we're going through this game,
and the sixth inning rolls around.

So, Walker being a smart player,
is looking at who's available.

So then he goes to me,
"I'll be in the bullpen if you need me."

[Buehler] I don't think anyone thought
I had a chance to get in that game

and I messed around and said "I just
came here to hang out with you guys."

But as that game keeps
getting a little weirder and weirder,

and you're kinda looking around
doing the math in terms of who's left,

and who is tired,
and who's this, and who's that...

By the eighth inning,
Treinen is in a Herculean spot

in terms of going two and a third.

And there was no one else left.

And it's like, "All right.
I think I've got the ninth inning."

[Roberts] We have the lead.

So I'm just thinking,
"We have to just go for it right now."

And if something happens
and they tie it up,

I'll be prepared for the fallout.

For a potential Game Seven, Walker
would certainly be spent for the series.

When you're exhausting everything

and you're putting everything out there
with no margin for error, that's scary.

[Nelson] It comes down to this
in Game Five.

Bottom of the ninth, Yankee Stadium.

The Dodgers 7, the Yankees 6.

LA three outs from a world title.

[Freeman] When Walker came in, I was like,

"Wait a second, you're supposed to be
starting Game Seven if we need, like..."

This is... Oh, man! We're going for it.

Out of the bullpen for the first time
since the end of June in 2018.

And it comes
in a potential World Series clincher.

and I think that adrenaline,
kind of feeling in that moment,

you're just trying to
get your warm-up pitches going,

and never really done it before.

So, we'll see what happens.

[Davis] The Dodgers are one out away.

And it's up to the former Dodger,
Alex Verdugo,

to try and keep things alive
for the Yankees.
