that hunting this creature
takes a village.

I'm gonna pitch y'all a story

from my home state
of Arkansas.

Oh, boy, Heather's about to go
full Southern on us.

-Let's hear it.
-I definitely am.

But I'm fixing to show you
something real good.
Take a look.

Here we go.

-Okay. Someone walking
across the road.
-Oh.

That looks like a Bigfoot.

What is that?
There's no way this is real.

Oh, it's real, Phil.
It's a real cult classic.

This is a '70s movie called
The Legend of Boggy Creek,
right?

That's it.
It was set in Fouke, Arkansas.

But it's not just a movie.

It's real witnesses reenacting
their own encounters

with a monster that they say
is still there today.

And I just got a call
about recent sightings

from the mayor
of Fouke, Arkansas.

Wait, the mayor of this town
called you personally?

He sure did.

Heather's a big deal
in Arkansas.

-It's a small population.
-Oh.

Look, and this creature
is a big deal.

I have been hearing stories
about this Fouke Monster
for a long time

and the movie may have
made the beast famous,
but its legend goes way back,

before movies
were even invented.

The Fouke Monster
has struck fear

throughout Southern Arkansas
for over a century.

Terrifying tales
of local encounters
with the creature

date back to the first
inhabitants of the region,

the Caddo people,
who recounted shocking run ins

with what they called
the ha'yacatsi, or lost giant.

The first documented
sighting of the monster

appears in an 1851 article
in The Arkansas Gazette,

describing a tall, hairy
human-like beast
stalking cattle.

Then, in 1856,

there are reports
of a posse sent out
to capture the cryptid.

The mission ends in horror
as a man is mauled.

His eye allegedly gouged out
and flesh torn away
by the creature's teeth.

After the town of Fouke
is established in 1890,

terrifying encounters
with the monster
only escalated

with most taking place
around nearby Sulphur River
and Boggy Creek swamp,

Witnesses commonly described
the creature as towering
seven to ten feet tall,

with reddish black hair
and a blood curdling howl.

Sightings peak in 1971
when a man named Bobby Ford
is hospitalized,

claiming to have been attacked
by the savage cryptid.

The monster then goes
from local legend
to national news sensation

when Arkansas-based filmmaker
Charles B. Pierce

is inspired to create
the 1972 horror movie
The Legend of Boggy Creek.

He's right there!

The movie grosses $25 million

and draws legions
of prospective monster hunters
to Fouke,

all hungry to capture
or kill the beast.

And yet, despite much effort,

no one is able
to produce enough evidence

to definitively prove
its existence.

But the supposed sightings
have never stopped.

If anything, they've spiked.

To this day, the lore
of the legendary monster

keeps thrill seekers
flocking to Fouke.

Recent distressing reports
include a Fouke resident

claiming he witnessed
the monster savagely attack
and kill his horse.

And a local woman
recently captured a recording

of what is believed
to be the creature's
bone-chilling howl.

Is the Fouke Monster
the southern version
of Bigfoot?

Could the uptick in sightings
suggest there are multiple
monsters out there?

Or could it even be something
supernatural, as many believe?

With sightings and encounters
reaching a fever pitch,

it begs the question,

is the Fouke Monster
more fact than fiction?

I'm not wanting to do this
just because it's Arkansas.

There are so many people
that have believed in this
for so long,

and we have
all this new evidence.

I think
we got to check it out.

from all the attention
that this movie, this myth,
brought them?

And maybe
they'd be incentivized

to keep the legend alive
a little bit?

all the sightings

that happened

And I know for a fact that
there are several witnesses

that don't like the attention
it brings the town,

so they won't talk

but I have driven through.

how pretty it was.

A lot of forests.

We are the natural state.

Over half our state
is made up of forests.

We have a ton of lakes,
creeks, rivers.

And that's a lot of places
for the Fouke Monster to hide,
let me tell you.

-Well, there are gonna be
plenty of them.

So I should talk
to everybody I meet
about bugs.

-I think

So how big is Fouke?

Its population
of a little over 800 people.

-That's tiny.
-I know.

Eight hundred people
and one monster
terrorizing everyone.

I've got several
close friends,

they've had sightings.

I've known these people
for 30, 40 years.

Their stories never changed.

It wasn't made up.

We just saw the Monster Mart.

the Fouke Monster's kind of
big business around here.

Does the town benefit
from the lore staying alive?

It sure does.

It's economic development.
It's tourism.

But look, people are scared.

We've had incidents
where this thing

by the anxiety in them.

But they made this recording
out in the woods.

has investigated plenty
of strange incidents in Fouke,

but we're told the person
he's taking us to

may have witnessed
the strangest yet.

You've received phone calls
about people seeing
the Fouke Monster, right?

Yes, I have.

They said
they had a big animal

get their livestock
or their dog or something.

And have you ever concluded
what it was?

I have not.

But people feel
like there is actually
a monster out here.

So since we're heading
to this place
on semiofficial business,

any chance we can turn on
the siren and flashing lights?

Yeah, we can.

Wow!

Watch out, Fouke Monster.

-This is Doyle.
-Let's meet him.

I guess

Hey, these are the folks I was
telling you about earlier.

Nice to meet you, Doyle.

Doyle Holmes
is a longtime Fouke resident

who says he had
a recent run-in

with a massive, ferocious
creature on his land.

All right,
this is where it happened.

Okay. Walk us through.
What happened that night?

Well, I was asleep about
3 o'clock in the morning,

and I heard
a commotion outside.

My dogs started raising Cain.

I ran out, tried to see
what was going on.

I saw my horse
running down this field

and he was really kicking up,
going as fast as he could.

But as he got
to about this point,
I saw a dark figure,

ran out like a linebacker
and hit him in the back end.

The horse just went tumbling
end over end down the hill.

When I got here,
the horse
was mortally wounded.

-He was dying at that point.
-Oh.

Oh, I'm sorry.

My dogs had given chase
to whatever it was.

You could hear
it was on two feet.

So, you saw something dark
coming after your horse

and knocking your horse over.

It was taller than the horse.

Yeah, about seven foot,
seven and a half feet,

was covered in hair.

What do you think this was?

It had to be
the Fouke Monster.

That's all it could be.

It was large enough
to knock the horse
completely off its feet.

How much did your horse weigh?

Seven hundred pounds.

That's something very strong.

And this is
the craziest thing.

I came out to check
on the body of the horse
the next morning,

and he was gone.

Wait.
What happened to the horse?

Let me show you.

The next morning,
when I arrived
where the horse expired,

I found drag marks
next to where the body was.

And I followed the drag marks

all the way
to this spot right here
where you see him now.

-Wow.
-.

There he is.

How does this
700-pound horse
get dragged out here?

By something brutally strong.

Strong enough to drag
through a barbed wire fence
and down this trail.

This thing broke your fence?

Yes.
Tore right through the fence.

It's almost like
something dragged this

all the way out here
to feed on it.

Yes, because
when I found the horse,

portions of the carcass
had been ripped off.

Far as what did it,
it did not look like teeth,

it looked like claws
or hand marks.

Now, a bear could possibly
be strong enough
to pull a horse out here.

I would think
if a bear pulled it off,
they would bury it.

-Hmm.
-And guard it.

May I take a look at this?

Yes.

This thing...

These are the sinuses,

but those two holes,
puncture holes.

Puncture holes.

That is a strong jaw
to be able to do that.

Mm-hmm.

Something's been feasting
on this for sure.

Yeah, but we don't know
if there was a scavenger.

If we get some images
of these puncture wounds,

we may be able to identify
what animal made these.

That's smart.

Okay, I'm gonna need
your help to hold this.

that looks like groove marks,

So this thing was here.

Any ideas
where it might have gone?

My feeling is
it headed towards the thicket
at the bottom of the hill.

There's plenty of water,

food sources down there,
including wild hogs,
plenty of cover.

No, it's too far
and overgrown.

But I've got horses.

Doyle gives us
a set of coordinates

deep within the Arkansas brush

and then hands us the reins
of his two
most trusted transports.

the Fouke Monster?

I'll take that as a yes.

A bear could be strong enough
to drag a horse that far.

We're talking about
a 700-pound horse.

It would be
a really good day
for the bear.

Right.

But it's way
more possible in my mind
than the Fouke Monster.

My horse is nervous.

When she snorts,
she's smelling something.

Question is, what is it?

Whoa, whoa, whoa!

I mean, she doesn't want
to go any farther.

There's definitely
something around us.

I think this is the end
of the line for the horses.

-We gotta go on foot.

With our horses spooked,

members of our crew
will take them to safety

while Phil and I continue
our search on foot

for any evidence
of the Fouke Monster.

I know it's loud out here.

But I still think
our game caller
would be effective.

the mayor gave us.

I swear I just saw something
move over there.

Wait, where?

-Back there?

So it's flattened.

So this is a game trail,
leading that way.

-Well, see where it leads us.

like a deer, a wild hog.

After discovering
a potential feeding ground
for a large animal

we decide to regroup.

At sunrise,
we meet someone

who I think
might be able to shed light
on our bizarre find.

-Hey, Lyle!

My old friend,
cryptozoologist
Lyle Blackburn.

He's an authority
on the Fouke Monster.

Not only has he written
three books on the subject,

he's also interviewed
every living witness

who supposedly
had an encounter
with the creature.

I was talking to Phil,
and I said

obviously, the one person
that we needed to talk to

when learning about
the Fouke Monster is you.

Aw, thank you so much.

As she's told me,

you've talked to
every single living witness?

Hundreds, literally,

that have claimed
to see the creature.

What patterns
have you learned
over time?

One thing that
even the townsfolk
noted early on

was that
a lot of the sightings
were around the waterways,

so you could begin to predict
where people would see this.

Have you seen it?

-I believe I have.
-Really?

And this was
only a couple of months ago.

It was an afternoon like this,
getting late, dusk.

I went out and hiked
well back along
this lake here,

towards the Sulfur River.

I came across
an actual pile of bones...

like a boneyard,

where someone or something

had thrown
some hog bones and deer bones.

All of a sudden,
I hear walking.

And immediately, you know,
the hair stands up
on the back of my neck,

and I turn and look.

I could see a whole figure...

upright, on two legs,
like a dark silhouette,

and it just disappeared
behind the brush.

I knew this wasn't a person.

-How big?
-I would say 7 feet tall.

-It's tall.
-What do you think
the Fouke Monster is?

Is it just another version
of Bigfoot or Sasquatch,

or is it something
completely different?

Well, it has a lot of aspects
that are similar to Bigfoot,

but it is unique
in some other ways.

Uh, it's very aggressive.

It seems
extremely elusive,
very shadowy.

That might blend
with some of the theories,

especially from
Native Americans,

that these are perhaps
more supernatural creatures.

Supernatural how?

There's a variety of theories
about these creatures

with fantastic abilities
to blend in

or disappear into the woods,

which it explains some of
these fleeting sightings.

So a paranormal cryptid?

Is that what
we're talking about here?

Well, I mean,
that makes sense.

We can't find
solid evidence of it,

and it disappears?

I mean, then again,
it could just be

something that knows
how to live here

and knows how to hide.

Absolutely. And I think
we can never underestimate

the abilities of animals.

This is their domain.

It is a big area around here.

Where should we focus
our investigation
from here on out?

Well, I think your best bet
is to follow the waterways.

This is the Sulfur River,
and this place in particular,

lately, has been
a hotbed of sightings.

I've put together a map
that'll probably help you.

the most recent sightings.

According to
Lyle's map,

the most recent cluster
of Fouke Monster sightings

runs along a remote stretch
of the Sulfur River,

surrounded on both sides
by swampland.

To try and outflank
this possible cryptid,

Phil and I
are rallying the troops.

finding this creature
takes a village, literally.

Mayor Purvis has
kindly assembled

a large search party
of eager volunteers.

And they all have
something to say

about the infamous monster
that's synonymous
with their town.

I grew up
right here

where they did the movie
and filmed the movie.

My feelings on it are

if there's prehistoric life
in the ocean,

there's prehistoric life
in the deep woods.

Everybody is
out here looking for
a flesh-and-blood animal.

I think
it's something different.

I think
it's something spiritual,

just like you see ghosts
and don't see ghosts.

I think if you believe in it,
you're more likely to see it.

So you think
I can potentially use

paranormal methods
to try and track this thing?

like he was chasing dinner.

the evidence found

by all three groups,

an interesting pattern
emerges.

Our hairs, prints
and possible food sources,

in addition to the boneyard
Heather and I stumbled upon
last night,

were all located on
the edges of swampland
deep behind the tree line.

So for
tonight's investigation,

Heather and I will target
an area of swampland

centrally located between
the four major evidence sites

in hopes of tracking down
the Fouke Monster
once and for all.

Look! Mussel.

Doyle said that is
a good source of protein
for the Fouke Monster.

The swamp
is dead ahead.

Yeah, the water starts
to get deep right there.

What's really interesting
to me is
this conversation I had

with one of
our fellow searchers.

She reaffirmed this idea

that the Fouke Monster could
exist on multiple planes.

Like what Lyle was mentioning,
this supernatural existence?

Yes. That would explain
why it suddenly appears
and disappears.

That explains why
there's one track,

and then nothing else
around it.

I mean, that seems like
a very convenient excuse,

in my mind,
for why this thing isn't seen.

It's far out there,
but it's intriguing.

If this thing is paranormal,
maybe I've got a better chance

of using
something from my kit.

I'm gonna use the SLS

and see if I can
pick anything up on it.

The first reported encounter
with the Fouke Monster

was a truly chilling one.

In May of 1971,

Bobby Ford is admitted
to the Texarkana hospital,

wounded and in shock,

sputtering a nightmarish story

about a hairy giant
with red eyes

attacking him at his home.

Bobby claims to have
barely escaped
the creature's claws...

...retreating in such a panic

that he crashed
through his own front door.

More terrifying still,

the man's tale is corroborated
by his wife and his brother,

who all swear that
they not only saw the beast,
but shot at it as well.

Law enforcement investigates,

finding strange cracks
on the Fords' property

as well as
claw marks on the porch.

A cougar was branded
the likely culprit,

but that wasn't good enough
for the Fords,

who packed up their belongings
and left Fouke...

forever.

I'm gonna try to sneak up
a little bit more.

As I got closer to it,

that the Fouke Monster
potentially could do.

It could appear and disappear.

just like what I saw before.

twice tonight.

all around us.

I feel like
we have to keep pushing.

Phil and Heather
continued their search of
the swamp through the night

but didn't manage to get eyes
on the mythical Fouke Monster.

But although
they didn't get eyes on it,

stunningly,
they may have gotten ears.

The strange screeching
they heard continued
through the night.

Where'd it go?
Not again.

But whenever
they got close to it,

it always seemed to recede
deeper into the swamp.

It was here.

Analyzing the audio,

Heather discovered
something remarkable.

It seemingly matched

the supposed
Fouke Monster recording
Mayor Purvis played.

-Whoa!

And even more curious,

it didn't seem to match

the sound of
any known animal.

However, the clump of hair
Phil found in the woods

near the banks
of the Sulfur River
was more disappointing.

When sent for DNA analysis,

the results came back
as human.

But the evidence Phil took
from the horse skull
was another matter entirely.

The photos were analyzed
by a forensic veterinarian.

The puncture marks
on the snout were determined
to be bite marks.

But the bites were
too large and too deep

to be from
the local black bear
or cougar populations.

-Just like the sounds
heard in the swamp...

...this evidence did not match
any known creature.

So is the legend
of Boggy Creek
fact or fiction?

Does the fabled Fouke Monster
stalk the town's swamps?

The community
certainly believes it,

and based on our evidence,

it does seem
something very unusual

just may be
creeping through the creek.

But speaking of the community,
