to brave a night
in a true house of horrors,

the Sorrel Weed Mansion.

they'll see somebody who was
not a part of that tour.

plagued by violence
and tragedy.

She locked herself
on the third-floor balcony
and jumped.

...its only residents now

are said to be
hostile spirits.

-You're talking about
actual physical violence.

[Heather] Something just
touched my face.

First of all, that's Kentucky.

Second of all,
it's gonna be ghosts.

They say Savannah is the most
haunted city in America.

[Josh] They do, indeed.

It has hundreds of years
of haunted history,

and I have just been contacted

by the custodians
of the Sorrel Weed House,

one of the oldest homes
in the city,

and they claim they are
literally under attack
by paranormal forces.

Something sinister
is stalking Savannah.

Founded in 1733
as the capital of Georgia,

Savannah was envisioned
as a utopia.

Today it is a beautiful,
genteel city,

but it also has a history
of darkness and violence.

-[whooshes]

1779. The city is the site

of one of the bloodiest
battles of the Revolution,

the Siege of Savannah.

Hundreds die
when revolutionaries fail

to retake the city
and its port from the British.

But death was not
the only evil
that took place here.

For over 100 years,

Savannah was a key hub in
the international slave trade.

Over 20,000 slaves
were brutally trafficked
through the city,

almost 90% of them kidnapped
directly from Africa.

[man speaking indistinctly]

[Josh] All of this horror
makes it no surprise

that paranormal activity is
reported throughout the city.

Of Savannah's 1,500
historically designated
buildings

and 22 historic squares,

more than two thirds
are reportedly haunted.

In Savannah,
they say you don't ask
if you've seen a ghost,

you ask how many.

But in a city
that seems overwhelmed
by paranormal activity,

the Sorrel Weed House
still manages to stand out.

Built in 1840

-on the blood soaked ground
of the Siege of Savannah...

...it was the family home
of wealthy merchant
Francis Sorrel.

But the home quickly
became a horror house.

Three of Francis'
children died,

leaving his wife Matilda
so distraught

she flung herself
from the top floor balcony
to her death.

Francis' surviving son,
Dr. Frank,

went on to use the home
to perform surgeries.

Far from this becoming
a place of healing,

it only led to more suffering.

experimental surgeries

left scores of patients dead.

Now it is alleged
that the ghosts
of Matilda, Dr. Frank,

and even
Revolutionary War soldiers

are all regularly sighted

stalking the halls
of the Sorrel Weed House.

Recently, things seem to have
taken a turn for the worse.

Visitors believe
they're becoming

the targets of hostile
paranormal activity,

with reports of suffocating
feelings of sadness,

disturbing shadow figures,

and even phantom assault.

What is happening
in the spirit-filled streets
of Savannah

and is the epicenter of it all
the Sorrel Weed House?

A place with all that history
has to have activity to match.

There's a concept
I like to call layering,

where, if multiple tragedies
happen over time

in the exact same place,

it enhances all of the
paranormal activity.

that happened in Savannah
were evil, no doubt.

Thousands dead.
Tens of thousands enslaved.

But here's the thing.

How could you live there
and not have that

in the back of your mind

There's reports that
people feel strangely sad
at the Sorrel Weed house.

Wouldn't it be stranger

if you were there
and you felt happy?

I mean, this is a place
of real tragedy

and you're gonna feel it.

So just a case of history
and our heads.

It could be.

Well, there is one way
to find out the truth.

if it is truly plagued
by paranormal entities.

haunted place in America,

in an old horse and carriage.

Does that mean

Sorrel Weed House.

[Phil] This is about
to get interesting.

[Heather] Jovie?

Jovie Berrios has worked
as a tour guide

at the Sorrel Weed House
for seven years.

Originally drawn
to the mansion

for its
historical significance,

he's since come to believe

it's one of the most haunted
sites in all of Savannah.

[Jovie] Welcome to the house.

[Phil] This is so well kept.

[Jovie] 1840s
when it was completed.

Francis Sorrel
was the original owner.

A very prominent,
wealthy shipping merchant
in the antebellum era.

This is his family home.

The story of
the Sorrel family itself

is a tragic one,

particularly his second
wife, Matilda Sorrel.

They did have
eight children together.

-Unfortunately, three of them
did pass away as infants.
-[Phil] Gosh.

One of them did pass away
in the house.

And that eventually
led to Matilda's tragic death.

Very much.

She locked herself
in the third floor balcony,

jumped, landing headfirst
into the courtyard down below.

Broke her neck,
cracked her skull.

She didn't die on impact.

She would have passed away
a few hours later
in her bedroom.

So it was prolonged.

It's a compounded location
full of tragedy.

How does all of that
manifest into
paranormal activity today?

One thing that's being
reported a lot in the house

is technology and equipment
malfunctioning.

You've got people who report
seeing shadow figures.

And this giant
over-mantel mirror

and this very small
over-mantel mirror.

Some guests will take a photo,

look back on it
five minutes later,

in the background,
they'll see somebody

who they know
was not a part of that tour.

[Phil] What about
when people are actually
staring into the mirror?

I don't ever advise anybody

to start staring
into the mirror.

You can get lost in it
so quickly.

What do you mean by that?

I've had people before
who will stare into it,

and it kind of takes a moment
to snap them out of it,
and they'll tell us,

"Oh, I was just
staring into oblivion.

I don't know
what was really going on."

Do people see faces
in the mirror as well
when they're looking at it,

or does it just
show up in photos?

Rarely will I have somebody
tell me that they'll see

somebody's face
staring at them

from the background
in the mirror.

One of the things
that's frequently reported
in the house

is this visual of a woman

just appearing on the balcony.

And it's the same balcony

that Matilda,
the lady of the house,

would have
thrown herself out of.

It's been getting
a lot more disturbing,

a lot more concerning.

You're saying things
are getting worse.

Very much.

There's one room in the house

that holds the most
disturbing history,

the most tragic history,
and that's the basement.

I do wanna
take you guys down there.

[Phil] So, what would
happen down here?

You've got people who see
shadow figures in here.

Several people have seen
the face of a little girl

staring at them
underneath this table.

Who do you think
this might be?

[Jovie] One of
Francis Sorrel's children.

Matilda Ann Sorrel,
unfortunately,

passed away at the age of five
from pneumonia.

But then you have
a couple of guests

who, unfortunately,
have their earrings
ripped out of the ear,

bleed from the lobe,
bleeding all over the floor.

[woman whimpers]

You're talking about
actual physical violence.

Yeah.

And several people

have reportedly
seen a shadow figure

sitting in that wooden chair.

The guests themselves
will sit on the chair,

and they'll feel they're being
pulled completely into it.

[Heather] Do we have
any thoughts as to why
there's activity here?

So this is where
one of Francis Sorrel's sons,

Dr. Frank, performed
all manner of trauma surgery.

Amputations,
facial reconstructions,
bullet extraction.

Within the three years that he
performed surgery in Savannah,

it's estimated that
he lost about 200 people.

-200 deaths.
-[Jovie] Mm-hmm.

So, when you think
of all that blood
seeping off the table,

that's gonna be sleeping
exactly where you guys
are standing over right now.

So that's just blood
seeping into the actual dirt
beneath the house.

[Jovie] Into the very
foundations of the property.

After Jovie leaves us
for the night,

we set up our security cameras
throughout the house.

Focusing on the most
active areas,

we cover the main living room,

known originally
as the women's parlor,

where people claim
to see spirits in the mirrors.

We also cover
the adjacent men's parlor,

where guests,
especially women,

have reported feeling
a suffocating energy.

We put a camera
near the front entrance

to monitor any motion
in the main hallway.

Push it a little bit right.

That looks pretty good.

And we also set one up
on the upstairs balcony

where Matilda Sorrel

-tragically jumped
to her death.

Finally, we place cameras
in the basement...

of patients

died from
Dr. Frank's surgeries

and people report
seeing a sick little girl.

in the exact spot where

where they've gotten
a shadow showing up.

stood out to me in this room

are these mirrors.

Jovie said that,
when people take photos,

they see things
in reflections.

Maybe there's something
about this type of glass

that's in front of mirror
that's causing it.

But the other thing
that can happen
in really low light

is this thing called
this strange face illusion.

-Have you ever heard of this?

[Phil] When you look
at a face in the eye
in really low light,

eventually, your brain
starts to make it change.

It takes one second
for that face to get distorted

into something unimaginable.

it happens to you right now.

what they've found
is that, when it's under
one lux of light...

being curious enough

to dabble in
some of those dark arts.

most beautiful cities.

But that beauty
hides a tragic past.

A city-wide fire
devastated downtown,

destroying 463 buildings.

The city's charred ruins
meant that residents
had to congregate together,

leading to a devastating
outbreak of yellow fever.

Hundreds died
in a matter of weeks.

Some concluded the outbreak
was God's punishment
on Savannah

for its participation
in the slave trade.

To this day,
a marker stands in memorial
for those that perished,

stating that nearly 700
died in the outbreak.

But what's interesting
is the exact number of dead,

a number the memorial
seems at great pains to hide.

The total number of deaths
from this so called biblical
yellow fever outbreak?

Six-hundred-and-sixty-six.

what looked like
a shadow person.

disturbing thing of all,

as I slept alone on the couch
in the parlor,

something touched my face.

She let out such a scream

that I think I have
a case of tinnitus now.

the chandelier was moving.

When we reviewed
our footage this morning,

we caught an actual
shadow figure behind me

while I was sleeping.

no one else there

that could account
for that figure?

what it was.

It definitely seems like

there's something going on
at the Sorrel Weed House.

But it may just be
the tip of the iceberg.
