this winter Ghost Town

pushes Jess and Phil
to their physical limits...

[Jenn] A lot of spooky things
that happened on board
that vessel, so.

[Phil] Divers have died
on this wreck?

[Brant] Yeah, they've died
on this wreck.

One of the country's premier
investigative teams,

Something is coming

that there is a small island

where many people believe

there are more ghostly
residents than living ones.

I would say sounds like
the type of place

where we should test
the drinking water.

what if I were to tell you

that it is in your backyard,
your home state.

So, we're talking
about Michigan.

-Oh, that's gotta be
Mackinac Island.

It is in fact Mackinac Island.

So, if you don't know
Mackinac Island
is this really popular

summer tourist destination.

Unfortunately, in the winter,
all those people leave

and it's basically abandoned.

It's a ghost town.

And that's when folks say
that this dark energy
moves in.

I am completely unsurprised
to hear this

because having
lived around that area,

and gone to Mackinac
a few times,

people there definitely think
that it's haunted.

[Josh] Yeah.

And there are centuries
of paranormal reports

associated with Mackinac.

We recently got a phone call
from a hotel owner there.

He says he has a big problem.

[Jessica] Ghost problem?

[Josh] Ghosts, plural.

-Ooh.
-Okay.

So, then what kind of
paranormal activity
are we talking about?

You name it.

Both him and guests
at this hotel have reported
seeing shadow figures,

hearing disembodied voices.

They claim to have seen
furniture move in the hotel.

And the kicker, he even claims
that he has video footage
of a ghost.

Check this out.

Okay, so this is a view
of the basement of the hotel.

This is shot from a fixed
security camera.

Keep your eyes though
on the left hand side
of the frame.

Yeah, I did see that.

It happens really quickly.

[Jessica] That's weird.

What are we talking about?
Is that just a person
down there?

Nobody's in the basement.

Basement is locked up,
this from a security camera,

nobody's down there.

And it vanishes.

In the next frame, it's gone.

So, it's not a living person.

I mean, the hotel owner
has said

that he and his guests
have seen shadow figures
at the hotel.

This could be one of those
shadow figures

Mackinac Island,
the place is legendary.

Well, legendary
is the right word.

You know, believers would say

that this hotel is just
a small piece

of a much larger
paranormal puzzle

because for as long as there
have been people on Mackinac,

there's been bloodshed.

Mackinac is a tiny island

that occupies just
four square miles
of Lake Huron

in the far north of Michigan.

But this small piece of land

has a very big
and very dark reputation.

For 3,000 years,

The Anishinaabek people
revere the island

as a sacred place to fish,
hunt and bury their dead.

The rival Iroquois
thinks so, too.

And for centuries,
these native tribes

wage bloody war
for control of the island.

Then, in the early 1700's,
the bloodshed continues

when French settlers
see the value of the island

as part of the lucrative trade
of furs to Europe

and drive the natives out.

And to add to the body count,
the British are coming.

They want a piece
of the fur trade, too.

Ousting the French in 1763.

But the bloodshed
still isn't over.

In 1796,

the Americans take the island
and the British fort

as part
of the Revolutionary War.

In 1812,
the British capture it back.

Then in 1814,
the US invades yet again,

and reclaims the fort
in the bloody battle
of Mackinac.

In both ancient
and modern eras,

Mackinac has been stuck
in a cycle of conflict
and death.

This Dark Legacy

leads to reports
of paranormal activity

all over the island.

Across Mackinac,

there are sightings
of a spectrum
of mysterious apparitions,

shadow entities,
floating orbs,

and other sights and sounds

that seem impossible
to explain.

So, what do you think?

Then by car to the coastal
town of St. Ignace,

where they'll catch the ferry
to Mackinac Island.

Just look around,
it's us and the crew.

We're the only ones
getting on the ferry
right now.

-[Jessica] We're not
smart people.
-[Phil] Mm-hmm.

Getting to Mackinac
is an adventure in itself.

We're leaving the car
because almost all vehicles

were banned on this island
back in 1901.

It makes for really clean air,

but it's not the easiest thing
for a comprehensive
investigation.

On the plus side,
the hotel owner

said he'd have a ride waiting
for us when we land.

-[Jessica] Wait, is this it?
-[Phil] No.

[Jessica] Yeah, it is!
I think it is!

[Phil] That is a taxi
in Mackinac?

-[Jessica] Yeah.
-[Phil exclaims] Oh!

Phil, Jess, hop on in.

expecting horse and buggy.

[Jessica] I remember
coming here in the summer
as a kid,

and it was packed.

- I have never seen it
so abandoned.
-[Phil] Yeah.

What are some of the more
hotspot haunted areas
here on the island?

Well, Mackinac Island
in general,

is pretty much one big
Native American burial ground.

Wow.

[Jessica] Have you ever
experienced anything?

[Joe] I have.
Yeah, absolutely.

Late at night, dark out.

I was driving my taxi.

Swore I saw somebody,
looked back and there
was no one there,

but I could feel the hair
on the back of my neck
stand up.

[Jessica] Like
a ghost passenger?

-Absolutely, yeah.

[Joe] This is a funeral
coming right now.

What, really?

[Joe] That's our hearse.
It's over 100-years-old.

The timing of that
is a little creepy.

What about the place
we're headed to, Small Point?

[Joe] Small Point is supposed
to be one of the most haunted
places on Mackinac Island.

I am both excited
and slightly terrified.

We've been a B&B since 1974.

And we've had over
40,000 guests in this house.

And they'll come down
in the morning and say,
"Guess what happened?"

There's just something
going on.

That's what we'd like you

A lot of folks will experience
the sensation of someone

sitting on the end
of their bed,

looking out the window,
towards the lake.

Upstairs, there's a lot
of activity

where you hear someone
going up and down the steps.

Doors opening and close.

And chains move
on the door locks.

The third floor used to be
an apartment

for a caretaker.

And we found
an old beaver hat...

[Findley] ...in the wall
where he was using it
as an office.

There's also a Bible.

their handwriting.

[Jessica] The objects Brian
found hidden in the walls
of his inn

could make perfect
trigger items.

Old objects that
any intelligent spirits
might be familiar with

from their past lives.

So, what you saw
was coming this way,

moved into the screen,
and then quickly moved out.

We unload our gear and begin
rigging the bed and breakfast

with surveillance cameras
throughout its reported
paranormal hotspots.

[Jessica] Coming down.

[Phil] The surveillance
cameras feed to a monitor
back at our command center

that our producer Brian
will keep an eye on
throughout the night.

[Phil] Before we start
with the investigation,

we decide to officially
move into our rooms.

I pick the blue room.

This is the bed where they say

guests wake up with someone
sitting right here

looking out at the water.

And Jess grabs the green room.

So, this room supposedly
when you're sleeping,

the ghost comes and takes
the covers off of you.

It should be...

a fun and interesting night.

Isolated on an empty Island,

and sleeping in an empty inn,

our plan for the night begins
with Phil in the basement.

There, he'll who look
for signs of rodents
or other pests

that might help explain
the ghostly image
that was captured.

Oh, yeah, it's chilly.

I'm heading up to the attic

where I'll attempt
to make contact
with any paranormal entities

occupying the property.

In that little tiny closet

is where they found
those personal objects.

So, it's a great place
to search for any spirits

that could be
connected to them.

There's a chair right here
where I think we can set up
one of the REM pods.

The REM pod monitors any kind
of electromagnetic field

disturbance around it.

So, anytime the energy shifts
in this general area,

it should set off the REM pod.

Now, I'm going to look
with infrared light

at the sphere
that looks for heat.

If there's any animal
down here calling this
basement home,

it's going to show up
as a heat signature

which could possibly help
explain the video we saw.

See what we find.

I'm seeing nothing.

our equipment in the attic,

I decide to cover
the remaining floors
with additional REM pods.

It's way cold up here.

It's red, which means
it's very close.

I see that video,

it looks like someone
walked in and walked out
really quickly.

The only issue is there's only
two ways into this place.

One is straight ahead of me

which would have been
caught on cameras,

while walking into that.

And the other is up the stairs
from the inside from upstairs,

and they would have caught
that on an upstairs camera,

so it kind of eliminates
a person having caused that.

But obviously, there's a lot
of storage in here,
a lot of things.

Something could have fallen.
I just don't know.

I just made my way
into a crawlspace down here,

but I don't think I touched
anything electrical.

The lights just flickered
on and off.

is picking up some kind of
presence in here

besides us.

what was going on in there?

as I could tell.

Every single one looked
as I left it.

I need to go restart this.

I'm going to do a sweep
with the thermal.

Maybe a rodent
or something small

that could have conceivably
set off the REM pod

pass through here
without showing
on the cameras.

So, the bed check,

we've been here.

It's like someone was sitting
on the edge of this bed

looking up that way.

super bright.

It went super dark.

And then, went bump.

It was, like, a big bump.

are actually gonna
head down towards you.

-So, you saw something
and you heard something.

we walked around upstairs.

I walked into here,

the REM pod went off.

Then, right when you're like,

and it's been
like this ever since,
it hasn't changed.

That's strange.

We're getting so much activity
in that Pink room.

I actually want to move
my stuff in the Pink room,

spent the night there.

Isolating ourselves
in the rooms

could lead to whatever
this is attempting to contact
us even more.

I just got woken up
by footsteps.

[Jessica] As we head upstairs,

I wanna see
if all the activity
we are experiencing

could be coming
from an intelligent presence.

In an attempt
to communicate with it,

I'm using the spirit box.

This device can transmit
possible otherworldly voices

by scanning radio frequencies
and white noise

which in theory
can be manipulated
by paranormal entities.

[Phil] It's really cold

After a very
sleepless night at the inn,

we decide to split up.

Phil is staying
back to pour over
the surveillance footage.

As for me, I can't help
but sense with the flurry
of activity

that we are dealing
with much more
than a solo entity.

I want to dig into
just what other spirits
could be triggering,

possible paranormal evidence
at and around Small Point.

To do that, I'm heading
to Fort Mackinac

to interview local historian,
Phil Porter.

Like most things
on the island,

the fort is shutting down
for the winter.

[Jessica] But Phil agreed
to give me the final tour
of the season.

How did such a small island

become so important,
it had so much conflict
over the years.

It has to do
with the geography.

Mackinac is in
the Straits of Mackinac,

which connects Lake Huron
and Michigan.

And before there were highways
and railroads and trains,

all the traffic passed
on the waterways.

So, this was
right in the center
of the water highway system.

It attracted
first Native Americans

who came for centuries
to Mackinac.

And then because
the native people here
had attracted Europeans,

and for a long time,
for about 150 years,

the main industry
of the upper Great Lakes,

and certainly
the Straits of Mackinac

was the fur trade.

A very lucrative business,
lots of money.

So, everybody wanted it.

[Phil] Yeah, whatever
country had control of it,

it had control of a very
busy industry.

And so, it was a place
that countries thought

it was worth building forts
and fighting over.

[Jessica] And then,
for the people that did
pass away here,

were they buried
on the island or--

[Phil] They were always
buried on the island.

Whenever people do archaeology

or do construction
along the lower level,

in the area just inside
the water around the bay,

inevitably we found
human remains

that date back
about thousand years.

And that's because this was
a Native American
burial ground.

-Interesting.
-Yeah.

[Jessica] So,
this whole shoreline,

and you're saying
that's hiding thousands
of years of native burials?

Yeah, they considered Mackinac
a very, very sacred place,

and so they not only came here
to fish in the summer,

they came here to worship,

and this is where
they buried their dead.

[Jessica] Knowing now
that we could be dealing
with more than

just the lone spirit
of a solo innkeeper,

I can't shake what Phil
told me about the history
of bodies

buried near the shoreline.

A witness
has reached out to me

with an experience he had
on that very same spot
on the island

involving an unexplained orb.

And I immediately arranged
for him to meet us.

-Hey, Todd.
-Hey. How are you?

-[Jessica] Good,
nice to see you.
-[Phil] I'm Phil.

-Pleasure to meet you.
-[Phil] Good to meet you.

[Jessica] Given
the strange light activity

that we experienced
at the bed and breakfast,

we are eager to investigate
the lead.

Todd Clements
is a longtime local

who has personally experienced
multiple occurrences

of paranormal activity
on the island.

As winter storms roll in,

Todd takes us to the place
he can never forget.

[Todd] So, this is the area
that I saw something.

It's a strange light.

It's a legend on the island.
You hear about people
who see these lights.

Yeah.

So, I'm walking home from work
one night,

and I see a light
right up here on the bluffs.

A little bit smaller
than a basketball,

yellowy white light,

very fuzzy,

and it starts
coming towards me.

And then, faster, and faster,
and faster.

And it got as close
as you are to me now.

Sixty-70 miles an hour,

straight out over the water.

Somewhere out there
in the water, it disappeared.

-Weird.
-[Todd] Really bright middle,

less bright towards the edges.

Did you hear anything?

[Todd] Nothing,
completely silent.

Thing that gets me
is it seems intelligent.

You gotta understand,
it's a little hard to believe
that story.

I was where you are
before I saw it.

Well, I definitely think
we should come here at night,

and see if we can
see anything.

[Phil] The storm
is rolling in.

The poor weather means a lack
of shipping activity
on the lake.

Combined with
the island emptying out
for the winter season,

the amount of light pollution
that might affect

our investigation
will be at a minimum.

Perfect for trying
to isolate strange

or possibly inexplicable
light sources.

I don't know how this rain
is gonna affect the visibility
at night.

But hopefully,
we get something.

[Jessica] I've got
the night vision goggles.

If something shows,
we can catch it.

Do you wanna just walk
the coast a little bit

with the night vision
and see what we can find?

amount of light.

We continue our hunt
for the orb anomaly

into the early morning hours.

But whatever we saw
over the Straits of Mackinac

vanished into the night
as fast as it appeared.

The next morning,
Josh gives us a call

with an exciting new lead
for our investigation.

Hey, Josh is calling.

-Hey, Josh.
-Hey.

Hey, hey. How goes it out
on Mackinac Island?

The house was pretty intense.

Phil, at one point,
heard footsteps above him.

It was the best sleepover
I might have ever had.

[Josh] Sounds intense.

What about the outside
of the hotel?

We have heard reports of these
glowing floating orbs

that float around the island,
and out over the water.

We went out there to try
and get eyes on them
ourselves at night.

And I saw something
out over the straits.

It was fast, but definitely
felt out of the ordinary.

We've seen and heard
some things that we can't
quite explain yet.

Really interesting
that you saw something
out over the straits.

That's one of the reasons
I'm calling you, actually.

I was contacted by a local
ship's captain out there.

A woman named Jenn Dowker.

And apparently,
one of her divers
had a terrifying experience

out on the straits
just two days ago,

which is when you were there
when you were on the island.

That might be
paranormal activity.

Might be paranormal activity
for sure.

This diver certainly thinks
it's paranormal.

He is completely
freaked out, apparently.

So, he was diving on a wreck
called the SS Cedarville

just off of Mackinac,

and he experienced
extreme disorientation

while inside the wreck.

He just got
completely freaked.

And at the same time,

he experienced
an equipment failure.

Captain Dowker tells me

that strange things like this

happen on the wreck
of the Cedarville
all the time.

It is considered the deadliest
wreck in the straits.

It's apparently upside down
under water,

terrible visibility.

And I think
since this just happened,

we have got to go
check out this report,

and see if it
could be paranormal.

Jeez. Okay, I mean,
that sounds like a really
intense wreck to dive,

but I just wanted to make sure
we can get to everything.

The next morning
in Mackinac Harbor,

Captain Jenn and her boat

pull in to take us out
to investigate the area's

most notorious shipwreck,

the SS Cedarville.

Captain Jenn.

-[Jenn] Welcome aboard.
-[Jessica] Thanks
for having us.

Hello.

All right, let's get fired up.

[ship siren blaring]

That was really loud.

I was not prepared mentally
or emotionally for that.
[laughs]

[Jenn] Sorry.

[Phil] The SS Cedarville
went down on May 7th, 1965,

after colliding with another
ship in a heavy fog

one mile east
of Mackinac Bridge.

Although,
the captain survived,

ten Cedarville crew men
went down with the ship,

which now lies nearly
upside down on its
starboard side

on the Lake Huron floor,

about 20 minutes from shore.

[Jessica] So, how big
is the wreck itself?

It's over 300 feet.

-[Phil] What? That is giant.
-Yeah.

There's a lot of spooky things
that happen aboard
that vessel.

I had a diver just recently

had some really strange things
happen down there,

equipment malfunction.

So, that seems to be a thing
that happens often
on the Cedarville.

There are a lot of people
that go down

and they just feel spooked.

Like, they see things out
of the corner of their eye,

gauges malfunctions
down there.

Actually, Brant's father

is a dive instructor
in the area,

and he had some major issues
on the Cedarville,

and didn't want
to come with us today
for that purpose.

-[Jessica] No kidding.
-Yeah.

Yeah, he was swimming along
and all the sudden,

he thought he saw something
off of the corner of his eye.

You know, it takes divers
every year,

you know, at least
one diver every year.

Wait, what do you mean,
"Takes divers?"

Divers have died
on this wreck?

Yeah, they've died
on this wreck.

This shipwreck has actually
taken as many divers,

as it has taken down
actual crew that was
on the ship initially.

-So, ten divers definitely
have perished...
-Ten divers.

...as well as the ten
that were on the shipwreck
in the first place.

That is such a large amount
of death.

Do you think
that the shipwreck
is kind of cursed?

[Jenn] That's exactly
what people say.

This is gonna be a fun dive.

There's a lot of diving
accidents that happen
out here,

and I don't wanna be
another one.

So, we planned ahead.

Joining me on this dive
will be our producer, Brian,

along with two safety divers

with decades of experience
in these treacherous waters.

With the dive buoy in place,

we use the anchor line
as our guide
to the lake floor.

The Cedarville wreckage
sits at around a depth
of 100 feet.

Can you see the wreck yet?

[Phil]

[Jessica] All right,
so visibility is about
ten feet.

That's what they were saying.

[Phil]

How is the wreck looking?
What are you guys
seeing down there?

[Phil]

[Jessica] What was that?

Yeah, that's what I thought
I heard, too.

"Watch your [bleep] head."

[bleep]

[Josh] The Straits of Mackinac

are known as one of the most
dangerous waterways
in America.

For hundreds of years,
its rocky shoals

combined with punishing storms

have turned even the most
experienced captain's
knuckles white

as they grip the ship's wheel.

There are over two dozen
recorded wrecks,

like the sailing vessel,
Sandusky,

which tragically sank in 1856.

Its entire seven man crew
going down with the ship.

The most recent
is the Cedarville,

sinking in 1965.

To save his stricken craft,

the captain attempted to run
the ship aground.

But before he could,

the Cedarville rolled on
to its starboard side
and sank.

Of the 35 crew aboard,
25 were saved,

but two died of exposure
to the icy waters
and eight drowned.

All of the sailors' bodies
were recovered

except for one.

Like many others,

the Straits of Mackinac
remain his watery grave.

So, we're having
some technical issues.

It's just really weird
and scary

that all of this stuff
just started happening

right when we got over
the wreck.

-I mean--

[Phil]

[Jessica] See these bubbles

-[Phil] Yeah.
-[Jessica] Yeah?

-[Jessica] Yeah.

I mean, it's huge.

It is a huge ship down there.

And it's just really, really
hard to navigate around.

The visibility
is completely shot.

-[Jessica] No kidding.
-So...

Everything about it just felt

kind of not right.

-Air was going fast.
-[Phil] Air was going fast.

Like, super-fast.

Do you think it was leaking?

Are you in the red, too?

[Jessica] You're in the red?

-[Phil] I'm currently
in the red.
-[Jessica] Holy [bleep]

-Right there.
-[Brian] Yeah, I'm under red.

[Jessica] Oh, my God,
you guys.

[Phil] Like, it disappeared.

[Jessica] That's an awful lot
of bad luck...

And-or paranormal activity
messing with you.

None of this
surprises me at all.

We have these kinds of events
all the time on the ship.

That's exactly why it's such
a big deal to dive it.

-[Jessica] I'm glad
you made it back.
-Me, too.

I don't think
you should dive again,
but it's up to you.

To me,
it feels like a one and done.

We saw it, we felt it,
it messed with us.

I'm good.

[Jessica] Yeah.

Not particularly proud
of that dive.

That was the most dangerous
dive I've ever done.

After a dangerous day
on and under the water,

we're no closer to solving
Mackinac's mysteries.

But waiting for us back at our
potentially haunted B&B

are the much
needed reinforcements
that Josh promised.
