my team heads into Utah's vast winter wilderness

to investigate an extraordinary spectrum

of paranormal activity.

From shape-shifting skinwalkers

to unidentified flying objects...

[Josh] ...Phil and Jess will unravel Utah's terrifying mysteries.

[Phil] These are huge tracks.

This is where it happened.

This creature put its hand,

probably about that big,

on the trailer and stood up.

Oh, damn!

Skinwalkers go around to graveyards

and don skins.

You might get hurt.

If you do, make sure you look at their feet.

That's the only thing they can't change. Their feet are hooves.

[Phil] There's a ton of tracks outside this place.

[dramatic music playing]

-[Phil] Holy... -[Jessica] Oh, [bleep].

Their feet looked like they had fur on them.

You know how you two are always asking me

to send you someplace warm and tropical?

Yes.

-This is not that. -[groans]

I'm sending you to one of the most brutal

and remote places in America

to investigate terrifying paranormal phenomena in the dead of winter.

Can't it just be "winter"?

No, "dead" feels very appropriate

when discussing the Uinta Basin in northeastern Utah.

This is perhaps the most infamous paranormal hotspot in America.

UFOs, cattle mutilations, bizarre energies, cryptids, you name it,

and it is reported in the Basin.

The locals call it the High Strangeness.

And would you like to guess when it hits peak strange?

We're gonna need our snowshoes, aren't we?

[Josh] Yes, you definitely are.

'Cause there has been a huge uptick

of unexplained activity in the Basin this winter

with a spectrum of truly bizarre events.

[camera shutter clicks]

[Josh] Five million acres across 7,000 square miles

roughly the size of New Jersey,

the Uinta Basin is located

in northeastern Utah, along the border with Colorado.

Strange phenomena are first reported here in 1911,

when Uinta residents become terrified

by thunderous explosions below the ground,

despite the fact the Basin is not on any active fault line.

Reports of subterranean sounds and energies continue

and are joined by reports from above.

Starting in the 1950s,

sightings of UFOs become so widespread

that Uinta is christened by the press

as "UFO Valley."

[dramatic music playing]

But it's what's said to walk the Basin

that's arguably the weirdest of all.

The legendary skinwalker.

Said to be a Navajo witch

who has shapeshifted into a malicious animal of their choosing,

skinwalkers are frequently reported in Uinta,

most often described as a monstrous wolf.

Today, this area is a hub for natural gas and oil fields,

with thousands of seasonal workers flooding into the Basin,

and reporting a slew of strange new sightings,

particularly in winter.

And this winter has been the weirdest yet,

with reports of UFOs,

abnormal energy, and, most disturbingly,

a gas worker who says he's just had

a terrifying encounter with what he believes

was a skinwalker.

Is something unbelievable happening in Uinta?

[dramatic music playing]

So, what do you guys make of this?

So, to me, it's really interesting because you've got these excavations,

you've got this drilling that's going on.

I'm wondering, are we dealing with some sort of paranormal protective energy?

Some sort of, like, spirit that's trying to protect the area?

So, I'm with you on the drilling here, Jess, but for a different reason

because maybe natural gas leaks are causing people to hallucinate out there

and seeing things on the ground and in the sky.

Phil, you always think it's a hallucination.

Do you think that people are making up what they're seeing in the sky?

It's possible.

Uh-huh. Well, there's been a large number of reports

of activity in this region over the years,

including written testimony, Phil.

-Where you going with this, Josh? -This is a letter

describing a UFO encounter

that was written by none other... than Phil Torres!

-Oh, my gosh! -Do you deny it?

Okay, first of all, I was 11 when I wrote that.

But secondly, how did you get that, Josh?

I have my ways, Phil. Your mom sent it to me.

Uh, this is called "My first UFO encounter."

It says it was about15 p.m.

You saw something hovering in the sky,

a diamond, rhombus-like shape,

a tint lighter than the dark night sky.

Suddenly, it disappeared.

And in case you don't have a full enough picture,

he's actually drawn the UFO right here.

-[Jessica laughing] -There's your diamond.

And it is signed, "A true story, by Phil Torres."

Oh, my gosh! What happened to you?

You used to be so cool!

Bottom line is, I know how witness testimonies can change over time

and I wanted to remember exactly what happened that night,

so I went home, wrote it all down,

and, I mean, like I said, it is a true story.

And do you think it was a true UFO?

I saw, by definition, an unidentified flying object.

-I don't know what it was. -And you weren't hallucinating from a gas leak?

[Phil] No, I was not.

Listen, I saw what I saw.

And I'm still open to these types of stories,

skinwalkers or otherwise,

I just, at this point, need a greater burden of proof

because I'm not 11.

Fair enough. Proof is what we're looking for here,

so I want you to go to the Uinta Basin and investigate.

Let's start with the skinwalkers, right?

It's one of the most prevalent stories there.

And I have lined up a really compelling witness.

A gas worker who claims, swears,

he came face-to-face with a skinwalker.

-Ooh! -All right.

And, while you're doing that, I'm gonna look into some of the UFO reports,

see if I can generate some leads there. All right?

-Sounds good. -Perfect.

-Yeah. -All right, good luck, guys.

[Josh] It's a four-and-a-half hour flight from New York City to Denver.

From there, the team connects to another flight

to the remote town of Vernal in northeast Utah.

[intense music playing]

-[Jessica] Oh, wow! -[Phil] Look at that!

-[Phil] Oh, my gosh! -Wow, is that pretty!

[Josh] Vernal has a population of 10,000.

[engine accelerating]

One of a series of small towns

in Uinta's vast and currently frozen wilderness.

Our eyewitness had his sighting far from civilization.

I think this is... it.

-[Phil] Oh, and there's our ride. -Yep.

[Josh] So the only way to get there is with a set of extreme wheels.

-[Jessica] Ready? -Yeah!

[upbeat music playing]

[Phil whooping]

-[engine accelerating] -Okay! Here we go!

Hold your horses.

-Let's slow it, Jess! -I'm slowing!

[Phil] [bleep] Jess!

[crashes]

-[Jessica] Dang it! -[sighs in relief]

[Phil] Uh...

I think I can get out of this.

[engine revving]

[Phil] All right, we're kicking up dirt!

Um, I think, uh... we're gonna have to push our way out of this.

Oh! We're gonna get this out!

[Phil] All right, okay.

[Jessica] Man! Oh, my gosh! It's up to the door!

[Phil] Yeah! [chuckles] Get ready!

-All right, we're in reverse! -Okay!

[Phil] Loads of fun out there, huh?

[Jessica] At least we know what our limitations are.

[Phil] Yeah.

One advantage of snow?

-Yeah? -There are tracks everywhere!

You think that's what people are mistaking for paranormal beasts out here?

There's animals like wolves that are much bigger than people anticipate.

I mean, that's true.

[Josh] Jess and Phil are meeting a local truck driver named Manny

who's lived and worked in the Basin for years.

He'd heard many stories of Skinwalkers,

but never believed he'd have his own terrifying sighting.

-That's our guy? -Oh! That's our guy.

-Hey, Manny! -[Manny] Hey!

-[grunts] I'm Phil. -I'm Manny.

-Nice to meet you. -Good to meet you.

-Hey. Jessica. -Manny.

So I assume you made us ride all the way out here for a reason.

-Yeah. -Is this where your story happened?

Yeah, this spot right here.

[Manny] I had pulled up up here with a girl.

I came up here 'cause she wanted to go shooting.

But it was dark.

We had our headlights on.

As we're talking, I see something come over this little hump right here.

As it's coming closer, I didn't get a good feeling from it.

[eerie music playing]

Arms were almost touching the ground.

It was all black.

And the face looked like a hyena.

I could tell it was looking at us because the head was moving,

but I couldn't see any eyeshine.

And that's where I noticed that was weird.

Especially with the headlights aimed right at it.

[Phil] So, being in this area of Utah, I have to ask.

Could it have been a mountain lion or a wolf? Bear?

There's no way. There's no way. This thing was way too big.

I've seen wolves,

-and nothing close to that. -This was not it?

There's no way.

Was the creature that you saw making any noise?

Nothing, it was completely silent.

Anytime I hear of a large predator, especially moving silently,

I always assume that that means it's in stalking mode.

That is trying to sneak up on you.

Well, I did not stick around.

-That was probably a wise decision. -[Jessica] Yeah.

So, what do you think it was?

Maybe a skinwalker.

[Phil] Since Manny had his sighting in an active drilling area,

I wanna follow up on my theory that gases could be at play

in the vicinity of the oil fields.

What are the conditions like around these pumps

when it comes to gases in the air?

There is H2S gas.

You can pass out.

And then, from breathing so much,

'cause the H2S sits on the ground,

so when you pass out,

-you keep sucking that... -Ooh.

-...air in on the ground. -Oh, wow.

Oh, yeah. You'll die.

-[Phil] Wow. -[Jessica] That's... terrifying.

Yeah.

[Phil] Knowing that the non-paranormal threats

in the oil field are very real,

from the H2S gas to the rapidly dropping temperatures,

we definitely have our work cut out for us.

-[Phil] Do you want... -[Jessica] Yeah! Thank you!

[Phil] And with skinwalker sightings in the immediate area,

it's a good spot to begin our investigation.

Well, this FLIR can kill two birds with one stone.

Because, one thing, it will help us actually find what we're looking for,

but also, we'll be able to see any gas leaving the earth really easily.

So if there's any methane leaks or H2S leaks,

we should see it.

You know what, Jess?

-Since we're getting so close to the pump? -Mm? Yeah?

I'm gonna take out the gas meter here.

So this is both

detecting organic gases, like methane,

-but also some of the other gases... -Mm.

...like the H2S, which could make us all pass out.

Okay, yeah. I'd like that for safety reasons, absolutely.

[Phil] Oh, man.

[Jessica] I wanna go back up to this higher ridge

where Manny said it originally came over.

-[Phil] Okay. -Right over there.

[Phil] Let's do it.

[Jessica and Phil panting]

-[Jessica] Okay. Quick scan. -Yeah.

-Hang on. [shushes] Listen, listen, listen. -Shh!

[distant howling]

Anybody else hear that?

-[crew member speaking] -Yeah.

-I didn't hear it. -[shushes]

[Phil whispers] Listen.

[Jessica] I'm totally hearing it now.

[Phil whispers] Yeah. There's something out there.

[Jessica] There's something definitely out there. Did you see it on your FLIR?

[Phil] I'm trying. Nothing yet.

-[distant humming] -Over here.

Absolutely heard it right over here.

It sounds super far away now.

[Jessica] We know that there's something out there...

Do you see anything?

...and at this point...

Over there.

...who knows what it could be?

[Phil whispers] Yeah, it's not getting closer.

[softly] I heard it, but I don't hear it anymore.

[Phil] We're definitely striking out, but what if

we could use the drone FLIR?

That would cover a lot of area.

That's a good idea. I like that.

[Phil] And the best way to cover a lot of ground?

I drone and you drive.

[Jessica] I'm down to drive and drone.

We can head south towards the oil fields

-and see what's in between. -Sweet!

[Phil] Jess and I heard an eerie call,

but without visual evidence,

it's hard to rule out the known wildlife in the Basin,

so I wanna use our thermal drone

to take an aerial scan.

If something's out there,

this should pick up its heat signature.

Jess will drive as I man the drone,

so we can cover as much ground as possible.

[drone whirring]

[Phil] All right, it's in the air!

-Let's get going. -All right! Here we go!

[engine accelerating]

Just tell me how you want me to drive,

so that we can keep apace with it.

Okay.

-How's this? -This is perfect.

-Seeing anything yet? -Nothing.

[Phil] I'm gonna do a little bit of surveilling around

-left and right here. -[Jessica] Uh-huh.

Woo! Got a heat signature!

-We got something! -Oh, my God! What is that?

Keep going, keep going, keep going. Go faster, Jess.

-Up there, up there, up there. -[Jessica] Okay!

[Phil] [bleep]

Check out these tracks, Jess.

[Jessica] Oh, my God!

[Phil] Look at that!

These are huge tracks!

I wonder where the tracks go.

Should be that direction, that direction.

[Jessica] Yeah, I'm looking, I'm looking.

I'm not picking anything up on the FLIR right now.

-[Phil] Nothing? -Nothing's over there on the ridgeline.

[Phil] Shoot. God, where did it go?

Ooh, what's this?

Something in the snow.

Looks like a pebble, a piece of dirt?

Something that, I guess, could've fallen off the fur of the animal?

'Cause it was right at surface level here.

Right along these tracks.

I'm gonna bag it then.

So now we have it bagged up, we can try to figure out what it is.

[Jessica pants] Hey.

-[Phil] Yo. -What'd you find?

[Phil] Uh...

Right along the side of the track here,

I found a little, kind of, dirt pebble.

-What is it, poop? -Couldn't tell if it's poop

or if it's mud that could've fallen off the animal

that could maybe have some hair in it,

-but regardless, bagged it. -That's a good idea.

-All right, let's keep heading south. -Yeah.

[intense music playing]

[Phil] Whatever we captured on the thermal drone was moving south from the road,

but the prints seem to have vanished after a few hundred feet.

While I still wonder if some skinwalker sightings

may be hallucinations caused by gas lingering around the oil fields,

our thermal drone clearly showed a large creature,

so we're pushing on in the direction that it was heading.

[crew member speaking]

I'm not getting anything.

[Phil] You're getting a weird hit?

On audio?

[Phil] RF energy, or radio frequency energy,

can include wireless signals, radio and microwaves

and electromagnetic fields.

[Phil] What's going on?

-[Jessica] Your audio's out? -[crew member] Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Uh...

I just hear like a... [imitates static]

-And then it starts fluttering. -I heard that too.

-[Jessica] We're good? -[Phil] We're good?

[Jessica] Uh... weird.

Why don't you bust out your iPad and see what's going on here?

Yeah, that's so weird that we just got that.

Like, totally randomly, the minute we show up to the... oil field?

But you know where that should show up very clearly?

-Where? -Is in... this data.

So... checking another measurement.

The Basin is prone to strange energy anomalies,

so I'm going to collect some data on the electromagnetic radiation in the area

to see if something could be interfering with our audio equipment.

Um... this shows you the peak frequency over time.

[Jessica] Mm-hmm. Oh, I see.

So if we get any bursts in any of these areas...

-[Jessica] Mm-hmm. -It's significant.

-[Phil] Oh, check that! -What's that mean?

Maybe there's something in this area that is giving off

electromagnetic radiation?

Could it be some equipment around here.

Maybe there's some underground pumps.

So the fact that we're getting these readings

-right at the exact location where... -Mm-hmm.

...the audio started going wild...

-That's a little strange. -That's a little strange.

All right, data collected.

-[Jessica] We good? -Yeah.

[Phil] As we track this creature across the oil fields,

our equipment is malfunctioning.

The Uinta Basin's reported High Strangeness

is becoming more apparent.

Which could mean we're on the right path towards answers.

[Jessica] Put on that, uh, gas meter too.

Nevertheless, we need to be on our toes

as we venture further into the Basin.

[Jessica] Oh, my gosh.

-[Phil] You see that haze? -Yeah, I do.

[Phil] Let's tread carefully.

[Jessica panting]

Oh, my God. I'm [bleep] exhausted.

-[Phil] Did you feel that? -Yes, I did!

-[Phil] The entire ground just collapsed underneath us. -[Jessica] Just... like...

-Just shook. -[crew member] It felt huge!

-[Phil] What the hell was that? -[Jessica] Wow.

[Phil] I've never felt that before.

-It was like somebody just stomped behind us. -Yeah.

-[Jessica] Ooh. -[Phil] Weird.

[Jessica] But I don't see any cracks or any deviations

other than where we were walking.

[Phil] Huh.

But it felt like the ground that was underneath us just, at the same time,

-just dropped three inches. -[Jessica] Yeah.

What the hell? I think we should back off

from wherever we are right now.

That was...

-[gas meter buzzing] -[Jessica] The [bleeping].

[Phil] Uh, guys, we gotta clear!

-Let's back up. -[Jessica] Okay!

'Cause we do not want to breathe it.

-[crew member 1] Yeah. -[crew member 2] Good.

[Jessica] I'm [bleep] exhausted.

-In all honesty... -Mm?

You need to get up 'cause there could still be traces of that gas.

And like Manny said, that gas lies low.

-[Jessica straining] Okay! -We don't need you breathing it in right now.

-[pants, straining] -Ready?

[Phil] Yeah.

So I'll have to go slow

just to try and breathe.

[Phil] Yeah.

[Jessica] Oh, my God. I don't know if I'm gonna make this.

I'm just exhausted.

I think we're being politely told to, um, get out.

[sniffles]

I saw some fence posts down there.

-Mm-hmm? -What if I leave a game cam?

So at least we have some passive surveillance of this area?

[Jessica] Okay.

[Phil] After a night marked by strange phantom calls,

figures moving in the dark, violent ground tremors

and gas exposure,

our first night in Uinta Basin was eventful.

Just wanna make sure that this thing is working.

And this absolutely should be able to handle

this type of cold.

But it's clear from the evidence we collected that we weren't alone out there,

even though the trail kept going cold.

It's probably one of the coldest environments I've ever worked in,

so I'm genuinely curious

who's gonna come walking by.

It's tough to describe out here.

So we're leaving a trail camera overnight

just in case whatever we witnessed decides to re-emerge.

[Jessica] Let's go.

[Jessica] Last night's investigation made me feel like

something was leading us out of that oil field,

trying to get us to follow it.

But why?

And how would it just disappear?

Could this be signs of a skinwalker?

I arranged for us to meet with an expert.

He is an anthropologist.

He is very familiar with the petroglyphs in the area,

the rock writing,

um, and the local lore as well here in the basin,

and I think it would benefit us greatly

to see what he has to say.

Oh, yeah.

You're never gonna guess where he wants to meet us.

Where?

At the actual petroglyphs.

-Ooh. -We're actually gonna be able to go check them out.

-That's amazing. -I'm very excited.

[Phil] From here, we hike?

[Jessica] From here, we hike.

-[Jessica] You good? -[Phil] Yeah.

[Jessica] To get more insight into skinwalkers

and their long history of reported activity in Uinta,

we're meeting with local Ute tribesman Larry Cesspooch.

Well, I brought you both up here today

'cause I wanted you to see some of

what Native people have left.

Rock writing derives from sign language,

not the American sign,

but the old Native sign.

We had to have a way to be able to communicate

with each other.

It's because we all spoke different languages.

They just translated those and put them onto rocks,

so whatever was important--

These are like documents, important documents.

Some are even top secret.

So this rock writing is a bit of a universal language.

Yeah.

Most of them are telling a story.

See, like the figures with the big hands?

[Jessica] Mm-hmm.

[Larry] Those are the Creator.

Like some of these circular ones are portals.

They're pretty uniform in all rock writing.

And all kinds of things come through those portals.

So, there are witnesses who have reached out to us

that claim to have seen something that is tall,

wolf-like features, but also human face features.

What does that sound like to you?

Could be, uh, skinwalkers.

Our people call 'em yahgovensinip.

But those things have been here for generations,

for thousands of years.

They go around to graveyards and they don skins,

so they can change their form.

They're like shapeshifters.

And so, when they put on the skins,

they become coyote-like.

So they can run just like a coyote.

[Jessica] Knowing that, is there anything that you recommend

we do or don't do

while we try to move forward with this research?

My first question is why do you wanna interrupt something

that's, uh... you don't understand?

They're gonna come and bother you.

And there's generations of them

and they'll keep bothering you.

You might get hurt.

There's some things that aren't meant to be bothered.

And, uh, you bother things,

uh, they'll hurt you.

They have spiritual quality

where they can be like this, you can't see 'em.

But if they want you to see them, they...

can let you see 'em, and...

-they're gone again. -[Phil] Wow.

So they look almost as if they disappear?

-Yeah, but they're still there. -But they're still watching?

Right.

[Phil] Have you talked to anyone else

who have seen something that is tall,

wolf-like features?

[Larry] Yeah, I get people who see things

and ask me to come and...

help them

here in Utah.

Okay.

[Jessica] Larry's account of how skinwalkers

can seemingly disappear into thin air

seems to track with our experience so far in the basin,

but also makes for a challenging creature

to catch on camera.

Larry mentioned that there are other witnesses

with similar experiences

all over the basin.

One is a local bus driver named Trudy

who has a chilling report

that sounds very similar to what he described.

-Hi. I'm Phil. -How are you?

-Hi. Jessica. Nice to meet you. -Hi, Jessica.

[Phil] We've heard that you saw something

a little odd around town.

Yes. Yes, I have.

-[laughing] -Do you mind walking us through what happened?

Yeah, sure.

I drive a school bus,

and I was on my way back with the football team.

It was after midnight.

And I'm driving, from the driver's side,

on this side of the road,

I see like this wolf-like-looking thing

come out from the field.

[growling]

He came about midway up my windshield.

Halfway up your windshield.

That sounds pretty tall.

It was.

It had short front legs and long back legs

and just a black figure.

Like, I know it looked like a wolf.

And it runs across my bus,

and my headlights shine right through its body.

So like invisible? Like, what do you mean like "shine through"?

Do you think it was a shadow

-that was just kind of cast weird in front of your bus? -No.

Nope. It was like transparent.

-Uh-huh? -And I know it wasn't a shadow

because if my headlights shined on a shadow,

the shadow would disappear.

-I see. -My headlights shined through his body.

-But you could still see the outline of him. -I could still see...

Yes. I could still see him.

That is odd.

No, it was really weird.

Then the coach that was sitting behind me,

a minute later, he's like, "Did you see that?"

And I was like, "Well, tell me what you saw first

because... you know,

and then I'll tell you if I saw what you saw."

And he said, "That wolf-like-looking thing

that went in front of your bus."

He said, "And your headlights shined right through its body."

So he also not only just saw this beast,

but could tell that it was transparent as well

-from where he was sitting. -Yes. Yes.

-That is weird. -Yup.

So, you're actually not the first person who's told us this story

of seeing a large wolf-like creature...

-Yeah. -...running around here.

-Yeah, you know, like-- -I cannot explain the transparent part.

That's super odd.

But wolves do get really large.

And especially if they're near a road,

they wanna look intimidating,

they can kind of bristle up.

But you think it's bigger than any animal should be.

-Oh, yeah. Like-- -Would you say it's unnaturally large?

He was big.

Is that section of road where you were at

or that entire just like path that you take

when you're driving the bus,

is that a relatively safe area? Or...

Yeah, as far as I know.

But I think things have been everywhere in the basin,

you know, like in different areas.

I mean, that it is a safe area,

do you get any warnings about what you shouldn't do

if you do see something weird?

Yeah. I've been told, "Don't pick up hitchhikers.

If you do, make sure you look at their feet,

because that's the only thing they can't change.

Their feet are hooves."

Do you mind giving us the coordinates

as to where you think you saw that animal?

Actually, yeah, let me pull up a map right here.

I would say it was like right around in here.

[Phil] So if I drop a pin right there,

is that the approximate area?

Between mile marker 95 and 99.

And of the 83 cases officially recorded,

a shocking 50 of them came from the Uinta Basin.

In fact, the basin was one of the first places in America

to report the cattle mutilation phenomenon.

Throughout the 1970s,

Uinta's livestock were frequently discovered dead,

not by natural causes,

but by strange delicate incisions

that saw vital organs removed

and blood drained.

In 1974, the FBI got involved,

conducting and investigation into hundreds of cases

of alleged cattle mutilation.

But years later,

the FBI failed to reach a definitive conclusion.

So, could these mutilations be attacks by skinwalkers?

Or perhaps proof of extraterrestrial activity?

For many of the people of Uinta,

these cattle attacks are just further evidence

that the basin's so-called High Strangeness
