This is where it happened.

Skinwalkers go around
to graveyards

and don skins.

That's the only thing
they can't change.
Their feet are hooves.

of tracks outside this place.

Their feet looked like
they had fur on them.

to one of the most brutal

and remote places
in America

to investigate terrifying
paranormal phenomena
in the dead of winter.

No, "dead" feels
very appropriate

when discussing
the Uinta Basin
in northeastern Utah.

This is perhaps
the most infamous
paranormal hotspot in America.

UFOs, cattle mutilations,
bizarre energies, cryptids,
you name it,

and it is reported
in the Basin.

The locals call it
the High Strangeness.

And would you like to guess
when it hits peak strange?

We're gonna need
our snowshoes, aren't we?

Yes, you definitely are.

'Cause there has been
a huge uptick

of unexplained activity
in the Basin this winter

with a spectrum
of truly bizarre events.

[Josh] Five million acres
across 7,000 square miles

roughly the size
of New Jersey,

the Uinta Basin
is located

in northeastern Utah,
along the border
with Colorado.

Strange phenomena
are first reported here
in 1911,

when Uinta residents
become terrified

by thunderous explosions
below the ground,

despite the fact
the Basin is not on
any active fault line.

Reports of subterranean sounds
and energies continue

and are joined
by reports from above.

Starting in the 1950s,

sightings of UFOs
become so widespread

that Uinta is christened
by the press

as "UFO Valley."

But it's what's said
to walk the Basin

that's arguably
the weirdest of all.

The legendary skinwalker.

Said to be a Navajo witch

who has shapeshifted
into a malicious animal
of their choosing,

skinwalkers are frequently
reported in Uinta,

most often described
as a monstrous wolf.

Today, this area is a hub
for natural gas
and oil fields,

with thousands
of seasonal workers
flooding into the Basin,

and reporting a slew
of strange new sightings,

particularly in winter.

And this winter
has been the weirdest yet,

with reports of UFOs,

abnormal energy,
and, most disturbingly,

a gas worker
who says he's just had

a terrifying encounter
with what he believes

was a skinwalker.

Is something unbelievable
happening in Uinta?

So, what do you guys
make of this?

So, to me, it's really
interesting because
you've got these excavations,

you've got this drilling
that's going on.

I'm wondering, are we dealing
with some sort of paranormal
protective energy?

Some sort of, like, spirit
that's trying to protect
the area?

on the drilling here, Jess,
but for a different reason

because maybe natural gas
leaks are causing people
to hallucinate out there

and seeing things
on the ground
and in the sky.

Phil, you always think
it's a hallucination.

Do you think that people
are making up what they're
seeing in the sky?

It's possible.

a large number of reports

of activity in this region
over the years,

including written
testimony, Phil.

that was written

I was 11 when
I wrote that.

But secondly,
how did you get that, Josh?

Uh, this is called
"My first UFO encounter."

It says it was
about15 p.m.

You saw something
hovering in the sky,

a diamond, rhombus-like shape,

a tint lighter
than the dark night sky.

Suddenly, it disappeared.

And in case you don't have
a full enough picture,

he's actually drawn
the UFO right here.

And it is signed,
"A true story,
by Phil Torres."

Oh, my gosh!
What happened to you?

You used to be so cool!

Bottom line is,
I know how witness testimonies
can change over time

and I wanted to remember
exactly what happened
that night,

so I went home,
wrote it all down,

and, I mean, like I said,
it is a true story.

And do you think
it was a true UFO?

I saw, by definition,
an unidentified flying object.

-I don't know what it was.
-And you weren't hallucinating
from a gas leak?

[Phil] No, I was not.

Listen, I saw
what I saw.

And I'm still open
to these types of stories,

skinwalkers or otherwise,

I just, at this point,
need a greater
burden of proof

because I'm not 11.

Proof is what
we're looking for here,

so I want you to go
to the Uinta Basin
and investigate.

Let's start with
the skinwalkers, right?

It's one of the most
prevalent stories there.

And I have lined up
a really compelling witness.

A gas worker
who claims, swears,

he came face-to-face
with a skinwalker.

And, while you're doing that,
I'm gonna look into some
of the UFO reports,

see if I can generate
some leads there. All right?

hour flight from New York City
to Denver.

From there, the team
connects to another flight

to the remote town
of Vernal in northeast Utah.

[Josh] Vernal has
a population of 10,000.

One of a series
of small towns

in Uinta's vast and currently
frozen wilderness.

Our eyewitness
had his sighting
far from civilization.

I think this is... it.

there's our ride.

[Josh] So the only way
to get there is with a set
of extreme wheels.

what our limitations are.

You think that's what people
are mistaking for paranormal
beasts out here?

There's animals like wolves
that are much bigger
than people anticipate.

I mean, that's true.

are meeting a local
truck driver named Manny

who's lived and worked
in the Basin for years.

He'd heard many stories
of Skinwalkers,

but never believed
he'd have his own
terrifying sighting.

So I assume you made us

up here with a girl.

I came up here 'cause
she wanted to go shooting.

But it was dark.

We had our headlights on.

As we're talking,
I see something come over
this little hump right here.

As it's coming closer,
I didn't get a good feeling
from it.

Arms were almost
touching the ground.

It was all black.

And the face
looked like a hyena.

I could tell it was looking
at us because the head
was moving,

but I couldn't see
any eyeshine.

And that's where
I noticed that was weird.

Especially with the headlights
aimed right at it.

[Phil] So, being
in this area of Utah,
I have to ask.

Could it have been
a mountain lion
or a wolf? Bear?

There's no way.
There's no way.
This thing was way too big.

I've seen wolves,

-and nothing close to that.
-This was not it?

There's no way.

Was the creature that you saw
making any noise?

Nothing, it was
completely silent.

Anytime I hear
of a large predator,
especially moving silently,

I always assume that
that means it's in
stalking mode.

That is trying
to sneak up on you.

Well, I did not
stick around.

-That was probably
a wise decision.

So, what do you
think it was?

Maybe a skinwalker.

[Phil] Since Manny
had his sighting in
an active drilling area,

I wanna follow up on my theory
that gases could be at play

in the vicinity
of the oil fields.

What are the conditions like
around these pumps

when it comes
to gases in the air?

There is H2S gas.

You can pass out.

And then,
from breathing so much,

'cause the H2S
sits on the ground,

so when you pass out,

-you keep sucking that...
-Ooh.

-...air in on the ground.
-Oh, wow.

Oh, yeah. You'll die.

terrifying.

[Phil] Knowing that
the non-paranormal threats

in the oil field
are very real,

from the H2S gas
to the rapidly dropping
temperatures,

we definitely have
our work cut out for us.

skinwalker sightings
in the immediate area,

it's a good spot to begin
our investigation.

Well, this FLIR can kill
two birds with one stone.

Because, one thing,
it will help us actually find
what we're looking for,

but also, we'll be able to see
any gas leaving the earth
really easily.

So if there's any
methane leaks
or H2S leaks,

we should see it.

So this is both

detecting organic gases,
like methane,

-but also some
of the other gases...

which could

there's something out there...

towards the oil fields

-and see what's
in between.

heard an eerie call,

but without visual evidence,

it's hard to rule out
the known wildlife
in the Basin,

so I wanna use
our thermal drone

to take an aerial scan.

If something's out there,

this should pick up
its heat signature.

Jess will drive
as I man the drone,

so we can cover
as much ground as possible.

Looks like a pebble,

Something that, I guess,
could've fallen off the fur
of the animal?

So now we have it bagged up,
we can try to figure out
what it is.

Right along the side
of the track here,

I found a little,
kind of, dirt pebble.

-What is it, poop?
-Couldn't tell if it's poop

or if it's mud that could've
fallen off the animal

that could maybe
have some hair in it,

-but regardless, bagged it.
-That's a good idea.

heading south.
-Yeah.

[Phil] Whatever we captured
on the thermal drone was
moving south from the road,

but the prints seem
to have vanished
after a few hundred feet.

While I still wonder
if some skinwalker sightings

may be hallucinations
caused by gas lingering
around the oil fields,

our thermal drone
clearly showed
a large creature,

so we're pushing on
in the direction that
it was heading.

a weird hit?

On audio?

[Phil] RF energy,
or radio frequency energy,

can include wireless signals,
radio and microwaves

and electromagnetic fields.

The Basin is prone
to strange energy anomalies,

so I'm going to collect some
data on the electromagnetic
radiation in the area

to see if something
could be interfering
with our audio equipment.

the peak frequency over time.

So if we get any bursts
in any of these areas...

So at least we have some
passive surveillance
of this area?

[Phil] After a night
marked by strange
phantom calls,

figures moving in the dark,
violent ground tremors

and gas exposure,

our first night
in Uinta Basin
was eventful.

Just wanna make sure
that this thing is working.

And this absolutely
should be able to handle

this type of cold.

But it's clear from
the evidence we collected that
we weren't alone out there,

even though the trail
kept going cold.

It's probably one
of the coldest environments
I've ever worked in,

so I'm genuinely curious

who's gonna come
walking by.

It's tough
to describe out here.

So we're leaving
a trail camera overnight

just in case
whatever we witnessed
decides to re-emerge.

Last night's investigation
made me feel like

something was leading us
out of that oil field,

trying to get us to follow it.

But why?

And how would it just
disappear?

Could this be signs of
a skinwalker?

I arranged for us to meet
with an expert.

He is an anthropologist.

He is very familiar with
the petroglyphs in the area,

the rock writing,

um, and the local lore as well
here in the basin,

and I think it would
benefit us greatly

to see what he has to say.

Oh, yeah.

You're never gonna guess
where he wants to meet us.

Where?

At the actual petroglyphs.

-We're actually gonna be able
to go check them out.

into skinwalkers

and their long history
of reported activity in Uinta,

we're meeting with local
Ute tribesman Larry Cesspooch.

Well, I brought
you both up here today

'cause I wanted you
to see some of

what Native people have left.

Rock writing derives
from sign language,

not the American sign,

but the old Native sign.

We had to have a way
to be able to communicate

with each other.

It's because we all
spoke different languages.

They just translated those
and put them onto rocks,

so whatever was important--

These are like documents,
important documents.

Some are even top secret.

So this rock writing is a bit
of a universal language.

Yeah.

Most of them are
telling a story.

See, like the figures
with the big hands?

[Jessica] Mm-hmm.

[Larry] Those are the Creator.

Like some of these
circular ones are portals.

They're pretty uniform
in all rock writing.

And all kinds of things
come through those portals.

So, there are witnesses
who have reached out to us

that claim to have seen
something that is tall,

wolf-like features, but also
human face features.

What does that sound like
to you?

Could be, uh, skinwalkers.

Our people call 'em
yahgovensinip.

But those things have been
here for generations,

for thousands of years.

They go around to graveyards
and they don skins,

so they can change their form.

They're like shapeshifters.

And so, when they
put on the skins,

they become coyote-like.

So they can run
just like a coyote.

[Jessica] Knowing that,
is there anything that
you recommend

we do or don't do

while we try to move forward
with this research?

My first question is why do
you wanna interrupt something

that's, uh...
you don't understand?

They're gonna come
and bother you.

And there's
generations of them

and they'll
keep bothering you.

You might get hurt.

There's some things that
aren't meant to be bothered.

And, uh, you bother things,

uh, they'll hurt you.

They have spiritual quality

where they can be like this,
you can't see 'em.

But if they want you
to see them, they...

can let you see 'em,
and...

So they look almost as if
they disappear?

anyone else

who have seen
something that is tall,

wolf-like features?

[Larry] Yeah, I get people
who see things

and ask me to come and...

help them

here in Utah.

of how skinwalkers

can seemingly disappear
into thin air

seems to track with
our experience so far
in the basin,

but also makes for
a challenging creature

to catch on camera.

Larry mentioned that
there are other witnesses

with similar experiences

all over the basin.

One is a local bus driver
named Trudy

who has a chilling report

that sounds very similar
to what he described.

[Phil] We've heard
that you saw something

a little odd around town.

Yes. Yes, I have.

-Do you mind walking us
through what happened?

Yeah, sure.

I drive a school bus,

and I was on my way back
with the football team.

It was after midnight.

And I'm driving,
from the driver's side,

on this side of the road,

I see like this
wolf-like-looking thing

come out from the field.

[growling]

He came about midway
up my windshield.

Halfway up your windshield.

That sounds pretty tall.

It was.

It had short front legs
and long back legs

and just a black figure.

Like, I know it looked
like a wolf.

And it runs across my bus,

and my headlights shine
right through its body.

So like invisible?
Like, what do you mean like
"shine through"?

Do you think it was a shadow

-that was just kind of cast
weird in front of your bus?
-No.

Nope.
It was like transparent.

-Uh-huh?
-And I know it wasn't
a shadow

because if my headlights
shined on a shadow,

the shadow would disappear.

-I see.
-My headlights shined
through his body.

-But you could still see
the outline of him.
-I could still see...

Yes. I could still see him.

That is odd.

No, it was really weird.

Then the coach
that was sitting behind me,

a minute later, he's like,
"Did you see that?"

And I was like, "Well,
tell me what you saw first

because... you know,

and then I'll tell you
if I saw what you saw."

And he said,
"That wolf-like-looking thing

that went
in front of your bus."

He said,
"And your headlights shined
right through its body."

So he also not only just
saw this beast,

to report the cattle

Uinta's livestock were
frequently discovered dead,

not by natural causes,

but by strange
delicate incisions

that saw vital organs removed

and blood drained.

In 1974,
the FBI got involved,

conducting and investigation
into hundreds of cases

of alleged cattle mutilation.

But years later,

the FBI failed to reach
a definitive conclusion.

So, could these mutilations
be attacks by skinwalkers?
