Witch craft, all over this place right now.

[Josh] On this episode ofExpedition X,

my team heads south of the border,

to investigate the centuries old witchcraft culture

of Mexican brujeria.

Where recent reports of supernatural sightings

and attacks by dark forces

have a region on edge.

[speaking in Spanish]

[Jessica in English] What do they do in the forest?

[speaking in Spanish]

[Phil in English] So this must be the place Emilio was talking about.

[whispers] This is insane.

[grunts]

Whoa!

[Jessica] Go slow. You all right?

[Phil] This is blood.

If I were to say to you names like,

Sabrina, Maleficent, Glinda,

I would be talking about?

-Uh, high school ex-girlfriends. -Yes.

Maleficent left me at that senior prom.

-No. Jess? -Witches.

[Josh] Witches. Yes, witches.

And that is what today's case is all about.

Witches, witchcraft, particularly in Mexico.

Brujeria.

-[Jessica exclaims] -Yes. That is exactly right, Phil.

It's what they call it.

Witchcraft's always been a major part of the culture in Mexico.

Yeah. We're talking spells, we're talking curses,

we're talking magic.

These kind of traditions date back to the earliest civilizations in Mexico.

But, it's a tradition that carries on even today.

And not only that,

reports of supernatural phenomena in Mexico are on the rise.

For centuries,

ancient Mexican cultures, like, the Aztec,

turn to people who identify as witches and sorcerers,

for their positive powers of healing.

But some witch legends also bring terror.

Like, the tlahuelpuchi,

who are said to be part witch and part vampire,

drinking the blood of infants for nourishment.

1519, the Spanish arrive in Mexico,

to begin their bloody conquest.

Those thought to be witches are burned at the stake.

And practitioners of witchcraft move into the shadows,

for fear of persecution.

During this time, Africans are brought as slaves to Latin America,

with their own unique beliefs in mysticism.

These different cultures mix,

and even absorb aspects of Catholicism.

This exotic, blended form of religion

ultimately becomes known as brujeria.

The Spanish word for witchcraft.

Far from being seen as evil,

people from all over Mexico

seek out brujeria healers,

when modern medicine fails them.

But, there are legends of a darker form of this witchcraft.

And encounters, with this more sinister type of magic

have become widespread in Mexico.

[speaking in Spanish]

[Josh in English] Now, a senior police officer in Monterrey,

has come forward with a terrifying encounter,

with what he believes was a malevolent witch.

[speaking in Spanish]

[Josh in English] And this footage of what is purportedly a witch

flying across the mountains, makes national headlines.

And there are many viral videos,

documenting alleged acts of sinister witchcraft.

[woman speaking in Spanish]

[Josh] Sceptics say these videos are nothing but elaborate hoaxes.

Believers maintain that these dark practices are on the rise.

Which begs the question,

is this the season of the witch?

So, what do you think?

Look, I'm certainly not dismissing that there are many people

who believe in the power of witchcraft.

But those last few videos could just be kids messing around in the woods.

There's also lot of superstition at play here.

People who want to believe something so much,

or fear something so much, that they convince themselves it's true.

Right.

Here's the thing, I am one of those people

that believe in the power of witchcraft.

I may have done a spell or two, or a lot.

-Are you a witch? -[Phil] I knew it.

-I knew it. -I'm just saying.

-Should we be nervous? Are you-- -Yeah, you probably should.

When I was in fifth grade,

my mom found my stash

of all my witchcraft items that I was keeping in an attic.

Where I had taken candles and carved them into the shapes of people,

and I was using them to cast spells.

-Wow. -I had a Book of Shadows.

So I would go to the library

I'd do a bunch of research, like, in old history books and stuff.

And write down the spells that I thought were cool.

You clearly are a believer.

Yeah, I'm a total believer in this stuff.

It's a religion and it's not just me, or just with Mexico.

It's a religion that extends around the world,

just in variations and different forms.

And, you know, there's people that truly believe

that they get blessed by a witch and their life improves.

Or they get cursed and they get sick.

And so for me,

I'm just not gonna dismiss that.

I'm gonna keep an open mind.

Who's to say that there's not something really there?

This really does have religious connotations for people.

And so, whether we share their beliefs or not,

we certainly have to be respectful about this.

The mission is as follows,

I'm sending you to Monterrey, Mexico.

That's where there has been this... this surge in reports

of witchcraft.

And so, I want you to go down there

and see if you can experience this for yourselves.

I'm gonna link you up with that police officer,

who claims to have had this terrifying encounter with a witch.

And we'll start there.

You know, but can you separate fact from fiction?

Is there anything to this?

Can it all be dismissed?

Is Mexico really under threat of witchcraft?

-I mean, we'll find out. -We're on it.

[Josh] It's a five-hour flight from New York to Monterrey, Mexico.

The country's third largest city.

It's a cosmopolitan Mecca.

However, modern comforts are not on our to-do-list.

I've arranged for Phil and Jess to meet our first witness...

in the mysterious mercados.

Where myth and magic are on full display.

Leonardo Samaniego is a retired police officer,

who served on the force for over a decade.

[Jessica] Hola.

[Josh] And says he experienced

one of Mexico's most famous witch sightings.

[speaking in Spanish]

[speaking in Spanish]

[Jessica in English] Can you tell us the story?

[speaking in Spanish]

[translator in English] I am a police officer here.

And I was working the night shift one night.

It was about three in the morning.

I saw what I felt was a trash bag hanging up in a tree.

But then it fell down to the street.

And that's when I saw arms sticking out of it.

And it was just hovering in the air.

Its back was facing me at first.

But then I turned on my sirens.

And it turned around to look at me.

Then I shined my brights on it.

And it came rushing towards me.

So I put the car in reverse.

Then it started flying at me.

I was scared to death.

I got on the radio and said,

there was a woman dressed in black approaching my car.

The eyes were all black.

It hit my windshield and pushed me into the other seat.

[in English] What the heck? So then, how did you get away?

[speaking in Spanish]

[translator in English] I had to be woken up when back-up arrived at the scene.

I don't know how long I was out.

My commander woke me up.

And my shirt was soaking in sweat.

[speaking in Spanish]

[Jessica in English] Since Leonardo's encounter,

he's become a true believer in supernatural witchcraft.

He's researched several locals who say that they are witches.

At our request, he's arranged a meeting with a person he believes

is the real deal.

[both] Hola.

-Hola, Emilio. -[Emilio in Spanish]

[Phil] Gracias. We can go in.

[Jessica] Emilio Salas identifies as a bruja blanca.

Which translates to white witch.

Emilio typically practices healing and medicinal spells.

With all manner of symbols ranging

from witchcraft to voodoo to Christianity,

whatever you believe in,

it can probably be found in his home.

I know you practice white magic,

but are there any witches that practice dark magic?

[speaking in Spanish]

[speaking in Spanish]

[Jessica in English] So what do they do in the forest?

[Phil in English] Emilio tells us where to find this forest of witches.

But before we go,

he gives us a protection spell.

And then a special chant that Emilio claims

might allow us to conjure a dark witch.

Jess makes sure to record it on her phone.

Go.

Perfect.

[Phil] The forest of the witches that Emilio points us to,

sits well beyond Monterrey city limits.

And once there,

we have to traverse over 15 miles of rugged terrain.

So we switch to a tougher set of wheels.

[exclaims]

[Jessica] What's the problem?

[Phil] We got ourselves a little river.

I just wanna test to make sure it's not too deep.

Gets a little deep. Big rock over here.

I'm wondering if we could just make it.

The branches are too low. I think we should cut right there,

and that way we avoid all the deep stuff.

I'll go my route, you go your route.

-See you on the other side. -All right. You will.

[Phil] We're looking for structures deep inside the forest,

where dark magic is allegedly practiced.

These structures lie far beyond the main trail.

So we eventually have to ditch our ATVs,

proceed the old fashion way, on foot.

-You know what this looks like to me, Jess? -What?

[Phil] End of the road.

We got black bears out here.

-[Jessica] All right. Did you bring the bear spray? -Nope.

There's I think, over a dozen species of owls that can be found around here.

That is something that could contribute to the lure of this forest.

Oh.

[Jessica] There we go.

[Phil whispers] Look at this old structure.

[Jessica] There's definitely stuff out here.

[Phil] Oh, yeah. In the middle of nowhere.

-Signs of old structures here, confirmed. -Yeah.

But, what kind of signs of witches would we be looking for?

Sigils written somewhere on the walls or on the ground.

Signs of an offering, candles.

Pile of herbs.

Little mini shrine.

[Phil] Hey, look at that.

[Jessica] Looks like a hip bone.

[Phil] Yeah, looks like a hip bone.

The [bleep].

-Did you hear that? -I did.

Yeah, I totally heard that.

[Phil] We found bones, but it could just be incidental.

[Jessica] I mean, it's awfully clean.

I'm not seeing any signs of any writing or sigils or...

-[Phil] Okay. -You know, anywhere

that candle wax would have been used.

Okay.

-Just seems weird that there's just one random hip bone. -Yeah.

-Do you wanna just follow this path? -Yeah.

[Jessica] All right, watch out. There's bunch of...

-spikes over here. -All right.

I'm not touching.

-Oh, check it out. -Wow.

So this must be the place Emilio was talking about.

[Jessica exhales heavily]

[Phil] Careful now. We don't know if anyone's there right now.

-[Jessica] So what, you wanna not go? -I'm just saying.

Let's be careful.

[Jessica] Can you see inside the windows?

As far as I can tell, it looks empty.

[Jessica] Can't see any people.

[Phil] So what the hell are we gonna find inside this cabin?

[Jessica] Let's find out.

[Phil] Even though the cabin looks empty for the time being,

we stay on high alert.

As we don't know who could return at any moment.

[Jessica] Hello?

[Phil] Wow.

-[Jessica] There's candles everywhere. -Oh, yeah.

Blood?

-I mean... -Oh, look where you stepping on.

And a gigantic pentagram.

[Phil whispers] This is insane.

Even I can tell that this is essentially witchcraft,

all over this place right now.

That moth is called the black witch moth.

I'm 100% serious.

This is called the black witch.

I've been looking for this moth since we've been here,

because it's used to symbolize witchcraft.

Check out that pattern on the inside.

-You got eye spots in there. -Oh, yeah. Yeah.

[Phil] Everything in here could be a symbol.

I have no idea. I mean, that's rum.

-There's this blue stuff. -No clue.

You've got the sample kit. Let's take sample of everything.

[Phil] This powder, I do not wanna inhale.

[Jessica] Phil pulls out the evidence kit and starts collecting samples.

[Jessica] I snap photos of the leftovers from whatever ritual took place here.

[Phil whispers] Let's spray the bones.

[Jessica] Phil then sprays the floor with luminol.

If what we're seeing is in fact blood...

It's off.

...the luminol should make it light up under our UV flashlights.

[Phil] So the bones themself seems clean, look at all the splatter around.

[Jessica] Yeah, I see that.

[Phil] It's like this suitcase had something dead inside.

[Jessica] The candles on the floor

appear to be placed in the star-like pattern.

So we get the idea to see what this place looks like with all of them lit.

[Phil whispers] One last candle.

This is such a bad idea.

With the candles lit,

I prepare to recite the conjuring chant

that Emilio gave us earlier today.

In hopes that we might summon a bruja.

What could go wrong?

Did you hear something move?

That sound like a breath over there.

Shh.

It sounded like it was right through here.

[Jessica] Hello.

[rattling noise]

The [bleep] was that?

-What'd you find-- -Swear this door just moved.

[Phil speaking]

[Jessica] That came back from over here, yeah?

[Phil] The hell was it?

[Jessica] I've seen enough to tell me

that something very dark is going on here.

-I would like to leave. -[sighs] Okay.

Okay. Got the flare?

-[Phil] Yeah. -All right.

[Jessica] After making it out of the forest of witches in one piece,

I've arranged to meet an eye witness

who claims to have had a truly bizarre witch sighting.

-Hola. -Hi, Diana.

[Jessica] Diana Perla Chapa has become

somewhat of a local celebrity around here.

After capturing on video what many locals claim

is a witch flying next to a high ridge line,

some believers have even famously dubbed it, simply...

[speaking in Spanish]

[Phil] We've seen you video.

It's... very interesting.

Isn't it?

-Did you take it right around here? -Yes.

Right there.

-So you mean, literally this mountain ridge right here? -Right here.

In fact, I have here the picture.

[Jessica] Huh.

Okay. So I recognize that from the video.

This was kind of the first ridge line it was on.

-And then that's the second area. -Yeah.

We've seen what it looks like on camera, in the video.

What did it look like to your eyes,

when you were there looking at this ridge line?

Because it was against the light,

-it was very dark. -Okay.

This thing was always like this.

Like this.

Never moved. Nothing at all.

But see, it was very strange.

Because we were, like 12 people.

And everybody was speaking very fast.

And nervous and in my video,

it's moving a lot, because somebody was saying,

"Come on, come one. [speaking in Spanish]."

And then, at the end, it just... it disappeared,

uh, slowly.

And we decided...

-It's a witch. -[Jessica] Mmm.

Did you believe in witches before you saw this?

Uh, that's a very tough question.

But, of course, witch in the sense,

of a woman or a man,

that have a lot of power in metaphysical ways.

The witches in Mexico, are labeled as brujas

in Mexico, they will help women in labor to have a baby.

They would help with herbs.

So, of course that I believe in, in that type of witch.

When people say that the witches are bad,

I believed that also, because, unfortunately,

-there is good and bad in everything. -Mmm-hmm.

It's an entity. It's an entity. It's a...

It's a witch.

I mean, I believe she saw something, right?

I'm wondering if it was a hoax.

But she wasn't aware of it.

I have a way of finding that out.

I've got a little theory of what she actually saw.

The ridge line where Diana recorded her witch

sits in the Cerro de las Mitras mountain range.

Its highest point is nearly 7,000 feet above sea level.

[exhales heavily]

Oh, we got a steep one.

Look at this terrain below us.

Dried up river bed.

[exhales heavily]

I bet Jess is, I don't know, drinking a latte right now.

Like, I see jack [bleep].

You guys don't see anything, do you?

Might need to do a camera hand-off up here.

[Phil] The further I ascend up the ridge,

the less I'm convinced the Diana's mysterious video

was a result of a staged hoax.

The terrain is just too treacherous.

Oh, [bleep].

But after a few hundred more feet of steep climb...

I find a good clearing where I can start our experiment

of trying to recreate whatever Diana captured on video.

All right, Jess. I made it up to the ridge line.

I can see the neighborhood below. How's it going down there?

Which ridge line are you on?

To be honest, I have no idea.

I'm not expecting you to see me quite yet.

Okay. Sounds good.

[in funny voice] Yes, we have helium.

It works.

[normal voice] Our producer helps me inflate a big black trash bag,

which will double as our flying witch in the sky.

All right, Jess. We got our floating bag of trash ready.

[Jessica] I'm ready. I'm watching.

[Phil] Oh, yeah, it's going. It's going good.

[Jessica] Do you see it?

I'm sorry, Phil. I don't see anything,

[Phil] Oh, and now I feel that breeze.

This witch is flying.

[Jessica] Got it, got it, got it. I see it.

Oh, my God.

That's it, right there.

[Phil] Oh, look at... We got a hawk coming in, checking it out.

Okay. How does it look?

I mean, I can see where if somebody who's really a believer,

goes out and sees something like that,

and is trying to record on an old camera,

could absolutely think they caught something strange,

a la, potentially a witch,

in real time.

I'm not seeing any lateral movement whatsoever.

Well, the breeze is really inconsistent up here.

I wanna see that footage.

[Jessica] While our experiment wasn't a perfect match with Diana's video,

I think we've proven the so called witch in her footage

has a lot in common

with a rogue balloon caught in an up draft.

[Phil] Let's get out of here.

-[phone ringing] -[Jessica] Oh, Josh is calling.

-[both] Hey, Josh. -Hey.

My favorite witch and warlock. What's going on?

[laughs] So we've actually had a good start on this investigation.

Much more than Phil and I were expecting.

All right, so good start.

On this end, I've been doing a lot of research.

And, I just got linked up with this guy named Miguel.

He's a historian.

And he's collecting people's first hand encounters

with witchcraft.

And apparently,

in this town called Linares, just a few days ago,

which is not too far from you guys,

hikers there found a pentagram on the edge of town

and burnt candles.

[Jessica] That's crazy, Josh. We actually found a pentagram too,

in some sort of abandoned ritual site.

Okay, but in this particular case though,

in the center of this pentagram,

they found a pile of burnt cats.

Take a look at this photo.

[Jessica] Oh, no. That's not cool.

Uh...

Don't mess with cats.

So that in the middle, that's a pile of dead cats?

[Jessica] Oh, that doesn't look good.

So apparently, people in this town are terrified.

Like, legitimately terrified.

They see this as evidence of some kind of dark magic.

And they are bringing in, Miguel tells me, a so-called white witch

to banish what they see as, some sort of,

evil entity, that is at the root of all this.

That's sound to me like a battle of good and evil.

It does. That's exactly what it sounds like.

They're gonna go ahead with this ritual tonight.

And Miguel says, he can get the two of you access to it.

Tonight?

Tonight. Like, as soon as it gets dark.

[Josh] I'm sending Phil and Jess to the town of Linares.

About a two-hour drive, south of Monterrey.

My team has a rare ring side ticket

to a witchcraft ritual.

But to get there, they first need to meet Miguel.

I've arranged the rendezvous

at one of the city's most historic sites.

[Phil] Hola, Miguel.

[Miguel] Welcome to Linares.

[Josh] Permanent Christian monuments were reportedly erected

to protect the region from evil forces.

-[Phil] This is Jessica. -[Jessica] Hello.

Wow.

[Miguel speaking in Spanish]

[Jessica in English] Ah, it's gorgeous.

Okay. Si.

[Phil] Miguel Angel Contreras

has written several books on witchcraft.

And has spoken to countless witnesses,

claiming to have been attacked or cursed

by witches practicing dark magic.

And there's the cross. Look at it.

[Jessica] Wow, that's cool.

[Phil] We show Miguel our findings from the abandoned house two nights ago

to get his expert opinion.

[speaking in Spanish]

[in English] Look where you stepping on. Where you stepping on.

[Miguel speaking in Spanish]

[Phil in English] According to Miguel,

four huge crosses were originally built centuries ago

by a Franciscan priest.

But two of those monuments are now missing.

The balance of good and evil has shifted.

So it is a battleground of witchcraft around here.

Geez. All right.

[Phil] Okay. We got our location.

-[Jessica] Perfect. Let's head out. -[Phil] 'Kay. Gracias.

[Jessica] Miguel guides us deep into Volcán de Jaures,

a remote region of forest, caves, and waterfalls.

The kind of secluded country

that makes it a popular area for witchcraft

and dark magic practitioners.

Phil and I meet with Dona Nachita.

In response to the grizzly sacrifice that took place here,

she's preparing a ritual of her own.

[Dona speaking in Spanish]

[Jessica in English] Dona Nachita believes

that she's able to draw the evil spirits

from the bodies of any nearby bruja,

and then trap them with a powerful spell.

To ultimately help restore the balance

of good and evil.

[Phil speaking in Spanish]

[Jessica in English] According to Dona Nachita,

the flames are meant to protect us from the dark energies

that her spell provokes.

While the smoke helps lift her incantations up to heaven.

[Dona speaking in Spanish]

[Phil in English] After several rounds of chanting and praying,

and no whistling observed,

Dona Nachita tells us the dark spirits

were not drawn out by her spells.

The ceremony may have failed, but she tells us

if we are looking to continue our investigation,

there is a notorious gathering place for dark brujas

to conduct their magic.

Before we head off,

Dona Nachita places a blessing of protection over us.

In case Jess is somehow successful

summoning any of the dark spirits

that are terrorizing the area.

[Phil] I think if we just follow the base of that mountain,

-we should find that cave. -Okay.

We signed ourselves up, for like, a big load of hurt, potentially.

-[Phil] This is not easy terrain. -No, it's not.

[Phil] I think we got ourselves a cave.

Look at the size of that.

[Jessica] Oh, my God.

-[Phil] Jess... -Huh?

-[Phil] We're gonna need some rope. -Oh, [bleep].

Another kind of witch in Mexico is called a nagual.

Known in pre-Hispanic times as owl-man,

and believed to appear only at night.

Nagual are said to have the power

to shape shift into animals of their choosing.

The word itself comes from the Nahuatal people of southern Mexico.

And means disguised or hidden.

In August 2020,

residents of the town of Soledad del Doblado

broke the pandemic restrictions

to chase what they believed was a shape-shifting nagual.

A gray-eyed figure either climbed,

or according to some witnesses,

flew up a palm tree,

to hide in the large leaves.

Believing this to be an evil spirit,

the residents became fearful and agitated.

The police eventually arrived

to disperse the crowd, and the alleged entity

apparently escaped, not to be seen again.

The case was never solved or debunked,

and the fabled nagual remains at large.

[Phil] I say, we toss some glow stick.

-See how far it goes? -Yeah.

[Phil] There's water down there.

We have plenty of rope to repel us down.

Let's see how far down this thing goes.

But whoever is using this cave for dark witchcraft...

or discovered.

[Phil] Nothing screaming witch right now.

[Jessica] All right, I'm coming down.

[Phil] I'm gonna hide underneath this boulder down here,

so I don't get hit by debris.

[Jessica] Oh, [bleep].

-Watch out. -Oh.

[Jessica] Almost. Hold on.

[Phil exclaims]

Ooh, look at this place.

This is water, Jess. Look at that.

-Look how clear it is. -It's gorgeous actually.

[Phil] Look at this red.

I mean, is it just dried mud?

-Let's just fix this out. Looks like a point. -Uh-huh.

-Yes. -And it goes up.

This almost looks like a pentagram.

[Jessica] Phil pulls out the luminol from the evidence kit,

and starts spraying the cave's ceiling.

[Phil] Okay.

[Jessica] Now let's see if it glows. Will it light up right away?

-[Phil] It should. -Okay, I'll turn that off.

[both] Whoa!

-[Jessica] Oh, my gosh. -Look at that.

This is blood.

How old do you think this is?

[Jessica] This would have to be relatively new blood,

if it was going to still be on the wall like this.

That means that this site is still active.

You wanna do the call that we got from Emilio?

[Phil] He gave us a tool.

After the luminol shows these markings are made from blood,

I collect samples.

While Jess brings up

Emilio's spirit conjuring chant on her phone, one more time.

[reciting chant]

[faint whistle at distance]

[Phil] Whoa.

I know.

[Jessica speaking]

[Jessica] Oh.

[Josh] After Jess makes one last attempt at the incantation,

it appears the trail has gone cold.

-[whispers] I think we should probably get out of here. -Okay.

[Josh] For centuries,

Mexican witches have been believed to possess

supernatural powers of healing.

My team set out to investigate,

whether those powers could be observed.

And whether a more sinister form of witchcraft

really exists.

[Jessica] Looks like a hip bone.

[Josh] What ensued was one of the most ominous expeditions

that Phil and Jess have ever conducted.

-[Phil] Look at all the splatter around it. -Yeah, I see that.

[Josh] The blood samples taken at the ritual site

inside the deserted cabin

came back as peccary or wild boar.

A common animal in the area.

[Jessica] This is a circle.

[Josh] As for the strange powder...

[Phil] This powder, I do not wanna inhale.

[Josh] Our analysis discovered that it was combustible.

And matched the material used in the conjuring ceremony.

Dona Nachita said a whistle sound

marks the arrival of a witch.

The ceremony itself failed to produce any such sound.

But further examination of our audio recordings

confirmed two instances of a whistle,

during Phil and Jess' investigation.

But it's hardly evidence of the arrival of a witch.

And, most shocking of all,

the blood found on the cave's ceiling.

may well be cases of misidentification.

This witch is flying.
