old witchcraft culture

of Mexican brujeria.

Where recent reports
of supernatural sightings

and attacks by dark forces

And that is what today's
case is all about.

Witches, witchcraft,
particularly in Mexico.

Brujeria.

-[Jessica exclaims]
-Yes. That is exactly
right, Phil.

It's what they call it.

Witchcraft's always
been a major part
of the culture in Mexico.

Yeah. We're talking spells,
we're talking curses,

we're talking magic.

These kind of traditions
date back to the earliest
civilizations in Mexico.

But, it's a tradition
that carries on even today.

And not only that,

reports of supernatural
phenomena in Mexico
are on the rise.

For centuries,

ancient Mexican cultures,
like, the Aztec,

turn to people who identify
as witches and sorcerers,

for their positive
powers of healing.

But some witch legends
also bring terror.

Like, the tlahuelpuchi,

who are said to be part
witch and part vampire,

drinking the blood
of infants for nourishment.

1519, the Spanish
arrive in Mexico,

to begin their
bloody conquest.

Those thought to be witches
are burned at the stake.

And practitioners
of witchcraft move
into the shadows,

for fear of persecution.

During this time,
Africans are brought
as slaves to Latin America,

with their own unique
beliefs in mysticism.

These different cultures mix,

and even absorb
aspects of Catholicism.

This exotic,
blended form of religion

ultimately becomes
known as brujeria.

The Spanish word
for witchcraft.

Far from being seen as evil,

people from all over Mexico

seek out brujeria healers,

when modern
medicine fails them.

But, there are legends
of a darker form
of this witchcraft.

And encounters,
with this more
sinister type of magic

have become widespread
in Mexico.

[speaking in Spanish]

[Josh in English] Now,
a senior police officer
in Monterrey,

has come forward
with a terrifying encounter,

with what he believes
was a malevolent witch.

[speaking in Spanish]

[Josh in English]
And this footage of what
is purportedly a witch

flying across the mountains,
makes national headlines.

And there are many
viral videos,

documenting alleged acts
of sinister witchcraft.

[woman speaking in Spanish]

[Josh] Sceptics say these
videos are nothing
but elaborate hoaxes.

Believers maintain
that these dark
practices are on the rise.

Which begs the question,

is this the season
of the witch?

So, what do you think?

Look, I'm certainly
not dismissing
that there are many people

who believe
in the power
of witchcraft.

But those last few videos
could just be kids
messing around in the woods.

There's also lot
of superstition at play here.

People who want to believe
something so much,

or fear something
so much, that they convince
themselves it's true.

Right.

Here's the thing,
I am one of those people

that believe
in the power
of witchcraft.

I may have done
a spell or two, or a lot.

-Are you a witch?
-[Phil] I knew it.

-I knew it.
-I'm just saying.

-Should we be nervous?
Are you--
-Yeah, you probably should.

When I was in fifth grade,

my mom found my stash

of all my witchcraft
items that I was
keeping in an attic.

Where I had taken candles
and carved them into
the shapes of people,

and I was using
them to cast spells.

-Wow.
-I had a Book of Shadows.

So I would go to the library

I'd do a bunch of research,
like, in old history books
and stuff.

And write down the spells
that I thought were cool.

You clearly are a believer.

Yeah, I'm a total
believer in this stuff.

It's a religion
and it's not just me,
or just with Mexico.

It's a religion that extends
around the world,

just in variations
and different forms.

And, you know, there's
people that truly believe

that they get
blessed by a witch
and their life improves.

Or they get cursed
and they get sick.

And so for me,

I'm just not gonna
dismiss that.

I'm gonna keep an open mind.

Who's to say that there's
not something really there?

This really does
have religious
connotations for people.

And so, whether we share
their beliefs or not,

we certainly have
to be respectful about this.

The mission is as follows,

I'm sending you
to Monterrey, Mexico.

That's where there
has been this...
this surge in reports

of witchcraft.

And so, I want you
to go down there

and see if you
can experience
this for yourselves.

I'm gonna link you up
with that police officer,

who claims to have
had this terrifying
encounter with a witch.

And we'll start there.

You know, but can you
separate fact from fiction?

Is there anything to this?

Can it all be dismissed?

Is Mexico really under
threat of witchcraft?

-I mean, we'll find out.
-We're on it.

[Josh] It's a five-hour
flight from New York
to Monterrey, Mexico.

The country's
third largest city.

It's a cosmopolitan Mecca.

However, modern comforts
are not on our to-do-list.

I've arranged
for Phil and Jess
to meet our first witness...

in the mysterious mercados.

Where myth and magic
are on full display.

Leonardo Samaniego
is a retired police officer,

who served on the force
for over a decade.

[Jessica] Hola.

[Josh] And says he experienced

one of Mexico's most
famous witch sightings.

Can you tell us the story?

I am a police officer here.

And I was working
the night shift one night.

It was about three
in the morning.

I saw what I felt
was a trash bag
hanging up in a tree.

But then it fell
down to the street.

And that's when I saw
arms sticking out of it.

And it was just
hovering in the air.

Its back was facing
me at first.

But then I turned
on my sirens.

And it turned
around to look at me.

Then I shined
my brights on it.

And it came
rushing towards me.

So I put the car in reverse.

Then it started flying at me.

I was scared to death.

I got on the radio and said,

there was a woman dressed
in black approaching my car.

The eyes were all black.

It hit my windshield
and pushed me
into the other seat.

What the heck? So then,
how did you get away?

I had to be woken up when
back-up arrived at the scene.

I don't know how
long I was out.

My commander woke me up.

And my shirt was
soaking in sweat.

Since Leonardo's encounter,

he's become a true believer
in supernatural witchcraft.

He's researched several
locals who say
that they are witches.

At our request,
he's arranged a meeting
with a person he believes

is the real deal.

[Jessica] Emilio Salas
identifies as a bruja blanca.

Which translates
to white witch.

Emilio typically practices
healing and medicinal spells.

With all manner
of symbols ranging

from witchcraft to voodoo
to Christianity,

whatever you believe in,

it can probably
be found in his home.

I know you practice
white magic,

but are there any witches
that practice dark magic?

So what do they
do in the forest?

[Phil in English]
Emilio tells us where to find
this forest of witches.

But before we go,

he gives us
a protection spell.

And then a special chant
that Emilio claims

might allow us
to conjure a dark witch.

Jess makes sure
to record it on her phone.

[Phil] The forest
of the witches
that Emilio points us to,

sits well beyond
Monterrey city limits.

And once there,

we have to traverse over
15 miles of rugged terrain.

So we switch
to a tougher set of wheels.

ourselves a little river.

I just wanna test
to make sure
it's not too deep.

for structures deep
inside the forest,

where dark magic
is allegedly practiced.

These structures lie
far beyond the main trail.

So we eventually
have to ditch our ATVs,

proceed the old
fashion way, on foot.

We got black bears out here.

Did you bring the bear spray?
-Nope.

There's I think, over a dozen
species of owls that can
be found around here.

That is something
that could contribute
to the lure of this forest.

the conjuring chant

that Emilio gave
us earlier today.

In hopes that we
might summon a bruja.

of the forest of witches

an eye witness

who claims to have
had a truly bizarre
witch sighting.

has become

somewhat of a local
celebrity around here.

After capturing on video
what many locals claim

is a witch flying next
to a high ridge line,

some believers have even
famously dubbed it, simply...

[Phil] We've seen you video.

It's... very interesting.

Isn't it?

-Did you take it right
around here?
-Yes.

Right there.

-So you mean, literally this
mountain ridge right here?
-Right here.

In fact, I have
here the picture.

that from the video.

This was kind of the first
ridge line it was on.

-And then that's
the second area.
-Yeah.

We've seen what it looks
like on camera, in the video.

What did it look
like to your eyes,

when you were there
looking at this ridge line?

Because it was
against the light,

-it was very dark.

This thing was
always like this.

Like this.

Never moved. Nothing at all.

But see, it was very strange.

Because we were,
like 12 people.

And everybody was
speaking very fast.

And nervous and in my video,

it's moving a lot, because
somebody was saying,

"Come on, come one.

And then, at the end,
it just... it disappeared,

uh, slowly.

And we decided...

-It's a witch.

Did you believe in witches
before you saw this?

Uh, that's a very
tough question.

But, of course,
witch in the sense,

of a woman or a man,

that have a lot of power
in metaphysical ways.

The witches in Mexico,
are labeled as brujas

in Mexico, they will
help women in labor
to have a baby.

They would help with herbs.

So, of course that I
believe in, in that
type of witch.

When people say
that the witches are bad,

I believed that also,
because, unfortunately,

-there is good and bad
in everything.

the Diana's mysterious video

was a result of a staged hoax.

whatever Diana

match with Diana's video,

I think we've proven
the so called witch
in her footage

has a lot in common

with a rogue balloon
caught in an up draft.

And, I just got linked up
with this guy named Miguel.

He's a historian.

And he's collecting people's
first hand encounters

with witchcraft.

And apparently,

in this town called Linares,
just a few days ago,

which is not too far
from you guys,

hikers there found
a pentagram
on the edge of town

and burnt candles.

[Jessica] That's crazy, Josh.
We actually found
a pentagram too,

in some sort of abandoned
ritual site.

Okay, but in this
particular case though,

in the center
of this pentagram,

they found a pile
of burnt cats.

Take a look at this photo.

[Jessica] Oh, no.
That's not cool.

Uh...

Don't mess with cats.

So that in the middle,
that's a pile of dead cats?

Oh, that doesn't look good.

So apparently, people
in this town are terrified.

Like, legitimately terrified.

They see this as evidence
of some kind of dark magic.

And they are bringing in,
Miguel tells me,
a so-called white witch

to banish what they see as,
some sort of,

evil entity,
that is at the root
of all this.

That's sound to me like
a battle of good and evil.

It does. That's exactly
what it sounds like.

They're gonna go ahead
with this ritual tonight.

And Miguel says,
he can get the two
of you access to it.

were reportedly erected

to protect the region
from evil forces.

books on witchcraft.

to countless witnesses,

claiming to have been

dark magic.

deep into Volcán de Jaures,

a remote region of forest,
caves, and waterfalls.

The kind of secluded country

that makes it a popular
area for witchcraft

and dark magic practitioners.

Phil and I meet
with Dona Nachita.

In response
to the grizzly sacrifice
that took place here,

she's preparing
a ritual of her own.

Dona Nachita believes

that she's able
to draw the evil spirits

from the bodies
of any nearby bruja,

and then trap them
with a powerful spell.

To ultimately help
restore the balance

of good and evil.

According to Dona Nachita,

the flames are meant
to protect us
from the dark energies

that her spell provokes.

While the smoke helps lift
her incantations up to heaven.

us the dark spirits

were not drawn out
by her spells.

for dark brujas

to conduct their magic.

places a blessing
of protection over us.

Another kind of witch
in Mexico is called a nagual.

Known in pre-Hispanic
times as owl-man,

and believed to appear
only at night.

Nagual are said
to have the power

to shape shift into animals
of their choosing.

The word itself comes
from the Nahuatal people
of southern Mexico.

And means disguised or hidden.

In August 2020,

residents of the town
of Soledad del Doblado

broke the pandemic
restrictions

to chase what they believed
was a shape-shifting nagual.

A gray-eyed figure
either climbed,

or according
to some witnesses,

flew up a palm tree,

to hide in the large leaves.

Believing this to be
an evil spirit,

the residents became
fearful and agitated.

The police eventually arrived

to disperse the crowd,
and the alleged entity

apparently escaped,
not to be seen again.

The case was never
solved or debunked,

and the fabled nagual
remains at large.

[Phil] I say, we toss
some glow stick.

instances of a whistle,

of the arrival of a witch.

And, most shocking of all,

the blood found
on the cave's ceiling.

The sample was sent out
for laboratory analysis.

may well be cases
of misidentification.
