And we're in the midst of an unforgettable investigation.

We came to probe reports

of escalating paranormal activity

inside this former psychiatric hospital.

If you weren't welcome in society,

this is where they put you.

[Josh] We learned Eloise's owner John Hambrick

and his daughter Ivan

believe they've been physically attacked

by malevolent entities.

When I used to come up here, I used to get choked.

This is something that happens on the fifth floor,

typically just to women.

We have another entity here known as the Creeper.

It creeps on the ceiling, it runs up the walls.

[Josh] And as soon as we began

our own investigation,

the activity was off the charts.

the investigation took a terrifying turn,

putting Jess in physical danger.

for an explanation for Jess' injury,

we continue to photograph every corner of Eloise.

Now, as we review the photos

we see that we've captured an astounding sight.

That is a [bleep] figure.

That is insane.

I have never seen in my life a photo like this.

I mean, that is not somebody that was standing there

when we were in the room.

This is where Ivan claimed she was attacked.

as to what or who we encountered at Eloise.

I'm off to the Westland Historical Museum

to unearth the asylum's dark history.

So this is an entire museum

These were actually used

-by physicians at Eloise? -[Ryan] Yes.

Uh, we have stethoscopes.

How many objects total have been collected?

[Ryan] Including documents, photographs and the artefacts,

uh, it would be over 10,000.

The mission for this particular museum

-is to tell the actual history of Eloise. -[Josh] Right.

Because it's haunted?

And I've had a few personal experiences myself.

We had a picture of some patients

watching a TV.

But we were trying to figure out where the picture was taken...

and I took it upon myself

pointing me the way.

When I got to the room,

I looked and it matched where the picture was taken.

As soon as I left that floor, the sensation went away.

This is one of the very particular things about Eloise

is that a lot of the paranormal reports

are physical.

-Yes. -There are all these reports of being touched

or suffocated or choked.

We experienced some of that ourselves

in the hospital last night.

So not every place that claims to be haunted

can say that. There is something very physical

-about the paranormal reports here. -Yes.

who reportedly had a serious paranormal scare

in the asylum's basement.

I was coming through with a saw.

We're cutting some things loose in the back.

And as i got to this landing here,

I experienced a distinct shoving sensation in my back

which propelled me forward.

-[Jesse] Yeah. Yeah. -[Phil] ...while carrying a saw.

There were no other people in here.

Could the door have closed on you

and... and hit you down?

No. Absolutely not.

I just landed right on the ground there,

-[Jessica] Huh. -...kinda saying a... a few words,

-yelling, like, "What the heck is going on." -[Jessica] Yeah.

Something just tried to hurt me.

-[Jessica] Yeah, for sure. -[Jesse] And that was the feeling.

A short time later I had a coworker

who came up to me with an almost identical story.

He was actually carrying a saw as well,

and, uh, was pushed down the same stairs.

-Weird. -What kind of saw?

Are you talking like a hacksaw?

[Jesse] Uh, like a cutoff saw.

-[Phil] Okay. -[Jesse] A steel cutoff saw.

So what do you think it is?

Legend has it that the spirit belongs

to the former boiler room caretaker.

Apparently he worked and lived down here

for decades in...

-in the underbelly of this asylum. -Hmm.

[Jesse] He was very hostile, very creepy.

So if you're saying that...

this is that maintenance worker's domain

and you come in here and your team comes in here

and starts to do some work in here,

do you think that's what may have triggered

this kind of reaction?

The action was clearly let me know

-that I was not welcome here. -Hmm.

-And, I mean, you see these steps and this fall... -Yeah.

-Yeah. Like it knew what it was doing. -After...

-[Jessica] It was trying to hurt you. -Yeah. I mean,

he could've broke my neck.

[Phil] An interesting detail of Jesse's story

is that he and his coworker were both carrying saws

at the time of their allegedly ghostly attacks.

His experience also tracks

with much of the reported paranormal experience

at Eloise involving physical touch.

So following our visit,

Jess and I stay down in the basement

and try to experience whatever they did

after I track down a saw of my own.

Well, Philip, I gotta tell ya, I'm really proud of you

for actually bringing a trigger object.

You know, if the two people

who felt they got pushed in here

-had a saw like this in their hand, -Uh-huh.

So I'm thinking I will go down,

set myself up in an area

So, Josh, I wanted to show you this model

This is a model of a quarter of the property of Eloise.

Sorry, this is just 25 per cent of the original property?

And this is as it appeared in what year?

This would be the early 1900s.

And today all that remains is what?

Seeing this puts it in a totally different perspective

-because this isn't just an asylum. -Correct.

Look at roads. Look at the sidewalks.

It is. It's like its own city.

I mean, this wasn't designed to be a house of horrors.

-Correct. -Right? I mean, it was designed to be

a medical campus.

But at the same time we can't ignore

that there was lot of death and suffering here.

Absolutely. And we learn a lot about the death

-that happened in this complex from what's in our archives. -Okay.

into another section of the asylum's basement...

where the spirit of a former employee may still reside.

that an entity known as the Creeper

has been seen in the dark recesses of the basement.

As we search this underground maze,

it's hard not to feel

as if something is drawing us in deeper.

How many patients died at Eloise?

Over the course of a 150 years,

tens of 1000s.

that hauntings occur in places of tragedy and suffering...

there couldn't be a more haunted place than Eloise, just on paper.

There is no better example...

On the certificates,

under place of burial, cremation or removal,

at lot of them say Detroit.

But then I notice, like, every once in a while,

they'll say Eloise cemetery.

Now, I did not see a cemetery over there.

Ah, that's because it's hidden.

What do you mean it's hidden?

-There was a burial ground over there? -[Ryan] Yes.

It's a potter's field.

Potter's field is where the county would bury

someone who's family hasn't claimed their body.

This is a place that people know about?

This place was basically forgotten by the public.

The whole area just got overgrown

and we're just now rediscovering it.

You'll notice a number...

next to some of these death certificates

that match a marker.

And how many people do we think were buried in this cemetery?

Over 7,100.

There are over 7,000 people

-buried on the grounds of that asylum? -Yes.

Have you been able to actually match

any of these death certificates

to a stone that you found there?

So far we haven't, but we're just now uncovering the stones.

Our hope is to uncover as many markers as possible

and match names to numbers.

So, would it be possible for me to take a copy

of some of the pages from this ledger

-to see if we can find a match out there? -Yes.

That would help us out a lot

and that would be great for us.

that the remains of over 7,000 Eloise inmates are buried on the property,

I decide I need to see this abandoned cemetery for myself.

We have this, like, gigantic open field here with nothing in it.

And yet, we now know,

it's a graveyard.

There are thousands of dead bodies in this field.

that the Historical Society has uncovered.

One-one-six-seven, 1168, and you can imagine,

this goes all the way down as far as the eye can see.

This is insane.

So they didn't put up any gravestones?

I bring Phil and Jess over to the graves

that the Historical Society has already started to unearth.

on the records that I copied from the museum.

So these are bodies of people that weren't claimed by the families?

And they have, up to this point,

not been able to match any individual patients to a number.

The numbers they've uncovered,

which are all up in the 1100s, 1200s...

There are few of these graves listed in the 400s.

If we could find that stone, we could match it to a patient.

So we could be the first, essentially,

to give dignity to a body buried under here and give it its name.

That's right. Now, we have permission from the Historical Society

to probe and to carefully dig around these stones.

He died at the hospital from tuberculosis.

And he was unclaimed

and was buried out here in the cemetery.

And of the 7,000 people buried in this field,

this, right here, is the first one...

Should we do an EVP and call out to him and see if we get a response?

We don't have specific paranormal reports from this field...

almost nobody knows it's here.

I cannot imagine how many horrifying procedures happened in that room.

Especially on the fifth floor, with the criminally insane.

One of the most tragic deaths recorded in Eloise's history

was that of 10-year-old Harmonia Kiossain,

dying in a hydrotherapy tub.

But what is hydrotherapy?

Introduced to the US in the 1880s,

hydrotherapy was said to shock out toxins

by plunging you into ice-cold water.

First used to treat people with typhoid fever,

it was seen to be so successful

that a dunk in icy water was soon prescribed

to treat everything from the common cold to alcoholism.

Anyone could use a cold bath, right?

What's the worst that could happen?

Well, you could drown.

Especially if you were an epileptic and left unattended,

as was tragically the case with Harmonia.

Today hydrotherapy is still used,

but, fortunately, more as a muscle relaxant and less as a wonder cure.

When we first arrived here,

the owner, John Hambrick, bluntly challenged

those who are skeptical about Eloise's haunted halls.

Eloise's energy is hard to deny.

we were overwhelmed with activity

that corresponded with previous reports.

[Josh] On the first night alone, we heard strange noises.

Saw shadowy figures.

I actually did just see a shadow cross down the hall.

[Josh] And then, something truly horrifying.

While challenging an entity known as the choker,

Jess seemingly had a violent encounter in the darkness.

[Josh] Disturbingly, Jess's neck exhibited redness and bruising

consistent with someone who had been physically choked.

Despite attempt to recreate the image, and digital enhancement,

the photograph that we took of what appears to be a shadow figure

could not be debunked.

[Josh] Our second night brought even more extraordinary evidence.

discovering this heartbreaking answer to one of her questions.

one of our digital recorders picked up another chilling piece of audio.

[Josh] Could this be a reference to the frigid waters

young Harmonia died in.

[Jessica] Something just touched the back of my leg.

[Josh] I always describe myself as an open-minded skeptic,

but our time inside the asylum

pushed me to the very limits of my rational belief.

So, is Eloise haunted?

in the long-forgotten fields beside the hospital.

For the first time we matched a patient name

to an overgrown headstone.

But more than 7,000 souls remain unidentified.

There are thousands of dead bodies in this field.

Their lives and deaths hang over every room

inside this once-grand facade.

In years to come, the Historical Society hopes to uncover and preserve

more of the lost headstones of Eloise.

Perhaps then, the patients here will find something

that has long eluded them.
