And we're in the midst
of an unforgettable
investigation.

We came to probe reports

of escalating
paranormal activity

inside this former
psychiatric hospital.

If you weren't welcome
in society,

this is where they put you.

Eloise's owner John Hambrick

and his daughter Ivan

believe they've been
physically attacked

by malevolent entities.

When I used to come up here,
I used to get choked.

This is something that happens
on the fifth floor,

typically just to women.

We have another entity here
known as the Creeper.

It creeps on the ceiling,
it runs up the walls.

our own investigation,

the activity
was off the charts.

we see that we've captured
an astounding sight.

I have never seen in my life
a photo like this.

I mean, that is not somebody

The mission
for this particular museum

the actual history of Eloise.

personal experiences myself.

of some patients

pointing me the way.

When I got to the room,

I looked and it matched
where the picture was taken.

As soon as I left that floor,
the sensation went away.

This is one of the very
particular things about Eloise

is that a lot of
the paranormal reports

are physical.

-There are all these reports
of being touched

or suffocated or choked.

We experienced
some of that ourselves

in the hospital last night.

So not every place
that claims to be haunted

can say that.

very physical

There were no other
people in here.

I just landed right
on the ground there,

is going on."

Something just tried
to hurt me.

was the feeling.

A short time later I had
a coworker

who came up to me with
an almost identical story.

He was actually carrying
a saw as well,

and, uh, was pushed down
the same stairs.

-Weird.
-What kind of saw?

Are you talking like
a hacksaw?

[Jesse] Uh, like a cutoff saw.

-[Phil] Okay.
-[Jesse] A steel cutoff saw.

So what do you think it is?

Legend has it that
the spirit belongs

to the former
boiler room caretaker.

Apparently he worked
and lived down here

for decades in...

-in the underbelly
of this asylum.
-Hmm.

[Jesse] He was very hostile,
very creepy.

So if you're saying that...

this is that
maintenance worker's domain

and you come in here
and your team comes in here

and starts to do
some work in here,

do you think that's
what may have triggered

this kind of reaction?

The action was clearly
let me know

-that I was not welcome here.

these steps and this fall...

[Phil] An interesting detail
of Jesse's story

is that he and his coworker
were both carrying saws

at the time of their
allegedly ghostly attacks.

His experience also tracks

with much of the reported
paranormal experience

at Eloise involving
physical touch.

So following our visit,

Jess and I stay down
in the basement

and try to experience
whatever they did

after I track down
a saw of my own.

that there was lot of death
and suffering here.

a lot about the death

they'll say Eloise cemetery.

It's a potter's field.

the county would bury

someone who's family
hasn't claimed their body.

This is a place
that people know about?

rediscovering it.

as far as the eye can see.

tragic deaths recorded
in Eloise's history

dying in a hydrotherapy tub.

But what is hydrotherapy?

Introduced to the US
in the 1880s,

hydrotherapy was
said to shock out toxins

by plunging you
into ice-cold water.

First used to treat people
with typhoid fever,

it was seen to be
so successful

that a dunk in icy water
was soon prescribed

to treat everything
from the common cold
to alcoholism.

Anyone could use
a cold bath, right?

What's the worst
that could happen?

Well, you could drown.

Especially if you
were an epileptic
and left unattended,

as was tragically
the case with Harmonia.

Today hydrotherapy
is still used,

but, fortunately, more as
a muscle relaxant
and less as a wonder cure.
