terrifying haunted hotspots

It sounded like it came
from right here.

[Josh] It's
an all-hands event,

as we tackle the dark history
of Eloise Asylum.

There's an entity that used to
get pleasure out of torturing
people here...

that's still here.

[Josh] A decaying
mental hospital

where spirits reportedly
threaten anyone

brave enough to walk
its abandoned halls.

We have another entity here
known as the Creeper.

It creeps on the ceiling,
it runs up the walls.

-Oh, my God!

-What?

-Whoa! What the hell was that?

[Phil] Holy [bleep]

There are more than
7,000 bodies
under our feet right now.

-[Jessica] Oh.
-[Phil] Wow.

-[Josh] Look at this.
-[Jessica] Oh.

What is that?

[dramatic music]

All right, guys. This may be
our most terrifying case ever.

Are the two of you ready
to meet the fearsome Eloise?

Who is Eloise?

Eloise is not a person.

Eloise is an abandoned
asylum complex

on the outskirts of Detroit.

It was in operation
for a century

but, these days,
it is a paranormal destination

because almost everyone
who goes there

claims to have some sort of
supernatural encounter.

Well, it doesn't surprise me
that people are getting
scared there.

I mean, these asylums
were disturbing places
100 years ago.

We're talking lobotomies,
insulin therapy, primitive
electroshock therapy,

all very gruesome
and traumatic.

And all of those things
happened at Eloise
and more.

This was, at one point,
the largest psychiatric
facility in America.

And it stayed open until,
get this, 1984,

leaving behind a long legacy
of mistreatment
and many unexplained deaths.

In fact, the local authorities
were so eager to get rid
of this place

that they actually sold it
to an entrepreneur
named John Hambrick for $1.

-One dollar?
-What?

That is a hell of a deal.

Hell indeed, Jess,
because what he saved
in money,

he gained in headaches.

Ever since he bought
this place, he has been
overwhelmed by, what he says,

are increasingly violent
paranormal attacks.

And, now,
he's at a breaking point.

He says that,
for the first time,

he himself
was actually attacked
by some sort of unseen force.

-Wow.
-And he wants our help
in determining

what's going on here
and if Eloise
is truly haunted.

And, if it is,
there are plenty
of reasons why.

1832.

Eloise Asylum begins
as a so-called poor farm

where the destitute
are given shelter,

but only in exchange
for grueling physical labor.

Within seven years,
the farm evolves
into a hospital,

but one that doles out healing
and punishment
in equal measure.

At Eloise, unruly patients
are kept chained to the walls.

Beyond the harsh conditions,
there are even
harsher treatments,

like electroshock therapy,
insulin therapy,
and lobotomies.

Things only get worse
in the 1920s, when the asylum
begins admitting convicts,

including a maximum
security section
for the criminally insane.

At its peak,
Eloise houses 10,000 inmates,

but the staff are overworked
and overwhelmed,

leading to widespread
and extreme neglect.

As a result, death is rampant.

The countless tragedies
even strike Eloise's
youngest patients,

like ten-year-old
Harmonia Kiossain

who drowns during an alleged
hydrotherapy treatment.

Administrative records
indicate that,
during the 1940s alone,

over 8,000 people die,
a rate of two per day.

Newspapers note that patients
are so desperate to leave,

they even choose death
as an escape,

with multiple inmates'
suicides ranging from hangings

to jumps
from upper floor windows.

Mercifully, Eloise closes
in 1984 due to government
budget cuts.

Much of the decaying complex
is demolished,

but its main structure,
the D-Building, remains.

It lays dormant for many years
before John Hambrick
buys it in 2018.

As soon as John opens up
Eloise to the public,

he claims to encounter
paranormal pushback.

John's visitors regularly
report ghostly sounds
like screaming in the hallways

and singing in empty rooms.

Photos taken in the building
have been known to show
strange mist

or outlines of figures.

Disturbingly, people
also report their hair
getting pulled

and even the sensation
of being choked.

John is concerned
that the trauma
of Eloise's dark past

is forcing its way
into our present.

So what do you think?
Is Eloise haunted?

The way I see it,
it may be more about
the death of the building

than the death of people.

Any abandoned
100-year-old building

is sure to be full of
all sorts of unsettling
sights and sounds.

Is that a ghostly scream,
or is that wind whipping
through a crack in the wall?

Is that a ghost going bump
in the night,

or is it just the place
literally falling apart?

So I think we're dealing with
more here than just
an old building.

I mean, thousands died
tragically and traumatically

in this area over the course
of many years, right?

So I'm wondering, for myself,
is this more of a case of

the living
encroaching on the dead?

I mean, it's a pretty
common theory
amongst the paranormal circles

that, if you are invading
a tragic space like this,

and you're doing things
like giving tours and whatnot,
it's gonna rile up the spirits

and they're gonna be angry.

So, from my perspective,
if there's a scientific
explanation here,

I'm all for it, right?
I'm here for that.

But, I will say that,
with so many occurrences
and with such a dark history,

Eloise could be something
really special.

I have investigated
so many purportedly
paranormal hotspots,

places like Waverly Hills,
Eastern State Penitentiary,
the Queen Mary,

all very spooky, right?

But it's just the frequency
of the encounters
at Eloise

has me wondering that, look,
if there is a place

where you're going to find
conclusive evidence
of the paranormal,

maybe this is it, right?

Which is why
I cannot stay behind the desk
for this one.

I'm coming with you.

This idea that almost
everybody who visits
this place

has a paranormal encounter,

-I wanna see if that's true

Kind of an overcast,
creepy day here.

[Jessica] I mean, this is
standard Michigan weather
for this time of year.

Look for a big, scary asylum.

look creepy.

through the front gates.

-[Josh chuckles]

[Jessica] Is that
the first time

welcome to Eloise.
-[Jessica] Ooh.

[Josh] Once considered
the hospital of the future,

Eloise is now
a relic of the past.

And the ominous facade
of the sprawling main building

leaves an unsettling
first impression.

-[Jessica] Ooh!
-[Josh] I mean,
it is imposing.

-Right?
-[Phil] It's way bigger
than I imagined.

-[Josh] They don't build
hospitals like this anymore.
-[Jessica] No.

[Phil] There's something
about it, though,
that is imposing.

-It just feels like
it's leaning over you.
-[Josh] Yeah.

And you half expect
to see somebody
looking at you.

-[Phil] Oh, yeah.
-[Jessica] Yeah. Yeah, you do.

[Josh] Should we see
what it looks like inside?

-[Jessica] Yeah, I wanna

-[Phil] Let's go for it.

[Josh] We've arranged
to meet with Eloise's owner,
John Hambrick,

and his daughter, Yvonne,
here in the main building.

Oh, wow. Oh, yeah.

This must be where
the patients come in.

This is awesome.

Happy to be here,
now that we know
we're not alone.

-Yeah, right?
-I'm Josh.

[Josh] John Hambrick
is a real estate investor

who made local headlines
five years ago

when he agreed to buy
the shuttered Eloise Asylum
from Wayne County.

This place is unbelievable.

I've only seen one room
and I'm already in awe.

-This place is insane.
-Yeah. Thank you.

How does one go about
purchasing an old asylum?

-And why does one go about
purchasing an old asylum?
-[laughing]

I've had
a long-standing relationship
with Wayne County,

and I was approached
by the second guy in charge
in the county. He asked me,

"Hey, would you be interested
in one of our properties

that we own
that we're looking
to get rid of?"

-Beautiful fixer-upper.
-Yeah.

Once I found out
how it's connected
to the community here,

my grandmother worked here,
my uncle worked here,
my cousin was here,

my dad died here.

I mean, it just really started
to register to me

why not preserve history
and allow people to experience

something they weren't allowed
to experience?

-Right. Because this place
was really closed off.
-[Hambrick] Absolutely.

Yeah, you could not
get in here.

-This was the
administration building.
-[Josh] Right.

The back half was the asylum.

So this is where you came,
stayed for a couple of weeks,

they qualified you
and, then, then put you
in the buildings

that were appropriate
to treat whatever you had.

Right. We'd actually
like to drop Jess off
if that's possible.

-[Hambrick chuckling] Yeah.
-Honestly, I would be
completely fine staying here.

-To get away
from the two of us? Yeah.
-[Jessica] Mmm-hmm.

How large
was this place originally?

Like, how many buildings
were we talking about
on here?

78 buildings, 900 acres.

-And how many buildings
are left today?
-Five.

And, Yvonne, how old
were you when your dad
bought this place?

-I was 13.
-[Josh] 13?

-So this is every
13-year-old girl's dream?
-Yeah.

-[Josh] To buy
an insane asylum.
-Right.

-Not a castle,
an insane asylum.
-[Josh] Right.

And what was your take
on this at 13?

I was nervous.

First couple of times
I came in here,
I was pretty scared.

When you came to look
at the property to buy it,

did you hear stories
that it was haunted?

Did anybody...
Did the realtor disclose
that to you?

[laughing] No, they didn't.
They just wanted me
to take it.

-So you didn't know
it was supposedly haunted?
-[Hambrick] I didn't know.

I mean, when I got here
the first time walking around,

I didn't wanna be
in here alone.

-That's for sure.
-[Jessica] Yeah.

So, scary, but you didn't have
any backstory to it?

I knew nothing.

In my experience,
there's an entity

that used to get pleasure
out of torturing
people here...

-that's still here. Right.
-[Jessica] Who?

But there's also people
that are stuck here.

There's children here.

I know there's kids here.

'Cause, remember,
if you weren't welcome
in society,

this is where you came.

If you had a child
that had a birth defect,

this is where they put you.

Wow.

It also held
the criminally insane.

-So a lot of
dark history here?
-Lot of dark history.

Yeah. So, okay.
Somebody comes in here,
die-hard skeptic says to you,

"This is nonsense, John.
No way. Ghosts aren't real."

What would you say to them?

this is incredible.

[Hambrick] Welcome
to the fifth floor.

This is the most active floor
in Eloise.

[Jessica] Why is this one
the most active?

This is maximum security.
This is where the worst
of the worst were kept.

-[Josh] You both have had
experiences up here?
-[Hambrick] Absolutely.

-When was your first
experience here, Yvonne?
-My first night here.

-I was giving a tour
for about 15 people.
-[Josh] Okay.

[Yvonne] And they were off
doing their
own thing,

and I was standing
in this hallway right here

and I had radioed down
to let my manager know
that everybody was here.

I lifted off my radio,

and I fully felt, like, a hand
go on the top of my head
and break through.

[Hambrick] And, then,
all of a sudden,
over the radio, I hear,

"Dad! Dad! Dad! Dad!"
Screaming hysterically.

And I'm, like,
"What the hell is going on?"

-So you were freaked?
-Yes. I was petrified.

-Crying?
-[Yvonne] Yes.

A lot of women have had
multiple encounters up here.

Really? So you think
whatever's up here,

-you say it's targeting women?
-[Yvonne] Yes.

[Josh] And have you had
other experiences

on this or any other
floor here?

Oh, yeah. For a while,
when I used to come up here,
I used to get choked.

-I'm sorry, choked?
-Whoa!

Yeah.

Wow. Do you mean
just, like, your breathing
felt constricted,

or you felt hands
around your neck?

I felt hands, actually.

This is something
that happens up here?

Yeah, this is something
that happens
on the fifth floor,

typically, just to women.

And whatever's doing this
has come to be known
as the Choker.

-Wow.
-What about you? Have you ever
felt anything up here?

Every single time I come
on the fifth floor,
I feel a heaviness,

I get a headache,
and I feel light-headed.

-And are you feeling that
right now?
-Absolutely.

-Huh.
-I feel like your behavior
has changed

since we were down
on the first floor to now.

I particularly do not like
being here.

[Josh] And are there
other entities

that have been singled out
here in the building
besides this Choker?

Yes. So another ghost here
is a ghost of a nurse.

She will peep her head
out of the nurses'
station window.

-[Josh] Which is where?
-Right down the hall.

-Yup. Right over there.

Okay. And what happens?

If you peer down the hallway
at night,

and watch the back window
out of that room,

you can see a nurse
pop her head in and out.

-Oh!
-No, that's... I gotta...
Guys, this has been great.

-I gotta take off.
-[Jessica] That one
gave me goosebumps.

Wait a minute,
are you kidding me?

-No.
-Have you seen this?

-[Yvonne] I have.
-We have another entity here
known as the Creeper.

It's very clawy.

It creeps on the ceiling,
it runs up the walls.

It never just walks
down the hallway.

-You talking about,
like, a shadow?
-Like a shadow.

And it scuffles to you.

And why do you call it
the Creeper?

'Cause it just kinda lurks.

And have you actually seen
the shadow figure?

-[Yvonne] Yes, I have.
-Where?

On the fifth floor
and in the basement.

[Hambrick] There's reports
all over the building.

There's been shadow figures
seen in the elevator shafts.

So even these elevators
are active?

Even these elevators
are active,

and they haven't been active
for 15 years.

But people hear and see stuff
all the time.

Well, it sounds like we've got
our work cut out for us.

-[Jessica] Mmm-hmm.
-Yeah. The building's yours.

You guys have access
to every room in it.

Eloise never disappoints.

-Oh, okay.
-Uh-huh.

You're talking a lot
like two people

-who aren't going to be here
much longer.

-[Josh] You're leaving?

[all laughing]

[Josh] As John and Yvonne
hightail it out of Eloise,
our day is just beginning.

Or, rather, our night.

[Jessica] Oh, yeah, perfect.
Here, we got some desks.

[Josh] Here we go. Perfect.

We unload our gear
and devise a strategy

for our first investigation
into this historic haunting.

John gave us these blueprints
for every floor

We're currently down here
on three.

So, cameras.

I'm thinking we should go
to the fifth floor,

set up our cameras there
and work our way down.

[Josh] Okay, so, fifth floor.

-This is where Yvonne
had her hair pulled.
-[Josh] Right.

[Jessica] Where was
that nurses' room?

[Josh] That's these windows
at the end of this hall.

So this nurse is supposed
to poke her head
out of these windows.

So, initially, it seems like
we're gonna deploy
all our cameras up on five

-but, in a way,
that makes sense.
-[Phil] Yeah.

[Josh] With a gameplan
in place, we rig up our fleet
of surveillance cameras

in the most active part
of the building,
the fifth floor.

-You going down there?
-[Jessica] Yeah, sure.

[Josh] Okay.

Okay, Phil, I am in front
of camera eight.
Do you see me?

Yes, I see you, Josh.

[Josh] The areas
we focus on include the spot
where Yvonne was attacked,

the main corridor,
and an old surgery room.

All the cameras feed down
to a monitor
in our command center

here on the third floor.

So that fifth floor
is totally covered.
Anything happens,

And it looked like a woman,

That way, if it's moving

any figures that are walking

And, then, maybe one

where, supposedly,

-where she pops her head in,
but also this entry point.

-[chuckles]

-I'm not kidding you, like...
-You feeling okay?

The minute we got
on this floor, my voice
just, like, vanished.

-Yeah, you sound really sick.
-[Josh] I'm, like,
losing my voice.

-Listen to me.
-[Jessica] Yeah.

John said, when he comes
up here, he starts
feeling sick.

-[Josh] That's true.
-And he starts feeling weird.

And now it's happening to you.

Do you know
where you can get some help?

-At a pharmacy?
-There's a nurses' station
right here.

[Josh] Oh.

[Phil] How about you
be a trigger object?

-A little human bait?
-[Phil] Yeah.

-[Jessica] Go see the nurse.

We'll set up the REM pods
and see if she decides
to show up to treat me.

-Either we find a ghost,

Okay, so, this is the window
where people say they see
this nurse leaning out.

Anything moves in this area,
temperature changes,
electromagnetic changes,

this will set off an alarm.

[Jessica] All right.

With the REM pods in place,
I fire up the SLS camera,

which has special software
that can map out possible
ghostly presences

that can't be seen
with the naked eye.

We have somebody that's sick.

Okay, so we're getting
an alarm from the REM pod
in the doorway.

Nothing's showing up

going off.

Okay, so, as you can hear,
I am sick.

[clears throat]

If there's anything

That's never happened before.

They both went off
at the same time.

Both times I've said,

that's gone off.

Okay, here's what I wanna do.

Yvonne says that, often,
the nurse pops her head
out of this window

when somebody's down
in the hallway

-and looking in
towards this direction.
-[Josh] Yes.

I want Phil and I
to go down that hallway,
point the SLS here.

-I want you to keep talking
about being sick.
-[Josh] Yes. I'm here.

-[Jessica] All right. Okay.

-[Jessica gasps]

you just passed right through.

was an old stage trick.

This is how they made
ghosts appear on stage.

And possibly, it could be,
helped people...
to see ghosts

right here, in this window.

So I think... Okay, potential
debunk for the window.

But what the heck is going on
in the nurse's office?

And what did you see?

And why did Josh
lose his voice

the second we got up here?

I have no idea.

come to Eloise,

weird stuff shows up
on their photos.

So, if we're gonna
do this sweep,

we might as well take photos
throughout the whole building,

get instant gratification,
and see what shows up
in these photos.

Originally launched in 1948,

Polaroid cameras were popular
for a large portion

of Eloise's
operational history.

[whispering] Ah, memories.

[Jessica] The theory is,
entities might be inclined
to interact with technology

that they were familiar with,
in their living state.

[Josh] Oh, this is
the surgery room.

Like, this is insane!

So this would be
where they were doing
the lobotomies potentially.

And they probably had
surgical tables right here.

Can you imagine
all the procedures

and failed procedures

that probably happened
in this room?

[Jessica shuddering] Oh.

There was probably
a lot of death and suffering

like right here, you know?

-[loud thud]

The most brutal
medical procedure

practiced at Eloise Asylum
was undoubtedly, the lobotomy.

At least 30 Eloise inmates
received one.

They were amongst the 50,000
Americans who were lobotomized

mostly between 1949 and 1952.

In this operation,
a sharp ice pick-like tool

is used to sever
certain neural connections
in the brain.

Surgeons at the time
believed the brain
would then reset itself,

and the patient would be cured
of any mental health issues.

And while patients
would certainly change

after the brutal procedure,
it was rarely for the better.

They became emotionless,
severely brain-damaged

and even in some cases, died.

About 60 per cent
of lobotomies in America,

and the majority at Eloise,
were performed on women,

even though the majority
of patients were men.

This barbaric procedure
was finally abandoned
in the 1950s.

But many poor souls
had their brain scrambled

in the name of
experimental medicine.
