Do you think that Earth
has been contacted by
extraterrestrial intelligence?

Yeah, I do.

I think out of
all the reports you hear,

some of those reports
could be legit.

You find some of them
plausible?

Yeah, absolutely.

And Phil?

No, I think
it's theoretically possible.

But have I seen any evidence
saying that intelligent aliens
have been here?

Not yet.

You believe in life
elsewhere in the universe?

I do. Absolutely.
It may not be
humanoid like us.

It may be microscopic.

But I do think we're not alone
in the universe.

I think we're all
in agreement.
Life is out there somewhere.

But there's a group
in Thailand
who not only thinks

there's extraterrestrial
intelligence in the universe.

They believe that
intelligent life
has come here to Earth.

They even believe that
that intelligence
is communicating with us

and issuing warnings
about humanity's future.

March 10th, 2011,

a Bangkok-based
financial planner

named Mark Kuntamestha
uploads a video to YouTube.

[Mark speaking]

[Josh] In it, he warns
that Asia
is in imminent danger

of a devastating
natural disaster,
an earthquake and tsunami.

March 11th, the very next day,

an earthquake just off
the east coast of Japan

measuring 6.6
on the Richter scale

unleashes the second
deadliest tsunami
in recorded history.

When Mark is pressed
for details
on how he predicted the event,

his answer is almost
as shocking
as the event itself.

He says, aliens told him.

Mark was a member of a group
called Khao Kala UFO

whose members claim to receive
messages

from extraterrestrials
via meditation.

They say they receive
information telepathically
hearing messages

and seeing powerful images
in their mind's eye.

They also claim
to see orbs of light overhead

and in some cases,
even descending to Earth.

In addition
to the Fukushima disaster,

members say they were warned
about other catastrophes,

including the 2004 tsunami
in Indonesia.

Despite their
out-of-this-world philosophy,

Khao Kala's membership
is on the rise.

And these aren't these
stereotypical
ET-loving oddballs.

These are business executives,
doctors, scientists,

some of whom
are quitting their jobs

and flocking to the group's
remote hilltop shrine

in a town known
as the City of Heaven.

But the group
has also become secretive.

One of their leaders,
Somjit Raepeth,

has avoided the spotlight
since law enforcement

began investigating Khao Kala
about six months ago,

attempting to ban their
gatherings altogether.

But members
of the group insist

they are in contact
with an alien intelligence

that speaks to them
telepathically,

and that a series of
volcanic eruptions
are headed our way.

All right, so a lot to
unpack here.

Let's put the aliens aside
for a second.

First of all, do you think
the human mind
can traverse space and time?

Yeah, I mean,
I do think it's a possibility.

Uh, the United States
government,

as a great example,
spent millions of dollars

in the '70s and '80s
to study remote viewing,

you meditate and try to

quote-unquote
see a different location.

I mean, it sounds crazy.

But I do think that
theoretically,

there's some ways that
the mind can actually
reach across locations

and possibly even time,
so who's to say.

I mean, when I see this group,
it's, uh, it worries me

When a group thinks
that they're getting
instructions

or communication
from another realm,

that can turn dangerous
or even deadly,

the Heaven's Gate group.

Yeah, this was a cult that
in 1997,
39 people killed themselves,

because they were trying
to board a spaceship

that they thought
was trailing
the Hale-Bopp comet.

And makes you wonder:
is this Khao Kala UFO group

heading in the same direction?

But we don't know.

This guy, Mark,
who supposedly predicted
the Fukushima disaster,

he isn't speaking
on the record with anyone.

And so this is what I want
the two of you to investigate.

This is a fascinating story.

Thailand, try to find
members of this group.

Talk to them.

See if you can
go to this place

where they supposedly connect
with extraterrestrials

and find out
what's the real story here.

Because whatever's going on,
it's fascinating.

To me, this is a big one
because either these people
are right

and they're actually
communicating with aliens,

which would be just
mind-boggling news.

Or they're completely
delusional and therefore
potentially dangerous.

These are real people
who really believe this.

of Bangkok.

Welcome to the future,
or is it the past?

Bangkok is a city
that spills out
in all directions,

a humid maze of temples
and tuktuks,

enlightenment
and dark desires.

It's known
as the Land of Smiles.

But this place also has
an edge,
from Muay Thai fighters

to food that has its
own kind of kick.

It's also brimming
with more than
10-million people.

One way of avoiding
some of the world's
worst traffic

is to avoid roads
all together.

Along the Chao Phraya River,

Phil and Jess navigate
their way past hundreds
of other boats,

their destination,
a meeting with a man

who claims to have predicted
the future.

We've convinced
a very cautious
Mark Kuntamestha,

who posted the YouTube video
warning about
the Fukushima disaster,

to share his inside knowledge
on Khao Kala,

and how its members
receive their
prophetic messages.

I heard about Khao Kala
in 2010 and was curious,

I had heard that they
received messages from
some sort of intelligence.

I wanted to see if I could
receive those messages
as well.

When I joined, the leader
of Khao Kala showed me

how to use Buddhist meditation
to use my brain
almost like an antenna.

And since then,
I have been able
to receive messages.

What types of messages
were you first receiving?

It was really intense,
like a voice speaking to me,

along with vivid images,
almost like seeing a movie
in my mind.

I received information
about a great wave

that was about to hit
a nearby country.

I uploaded the message
to warn people

and the next day
the earthquake and tsunami
occurred in Fukushima, Japan.

What do you say to people
who say this sounds crazy

and you just got lucky
uploading a video
on the right day?

It sounded crazy to me too,
but it was accurate.

I cannot deny that,
nobody can.

This message came to me
from an alien source.

And there are more messages
being received now.

So what has been some
of the latest predictions?

Recently, many members
of Khao Kala

observed a mysterious circle
of light
descending from the sky.

when it hit the ground,

they received a vision
of a great circle of volcanoes

erupting all over the world.

[Josh] The vision seems
to focus on the so called
Ring of Fire

a 25,000 mile arc
of tectonic hotspots

around the Pacific
with 452 volcanoes.

This area contains 75%
of the world's
active volcanoes

and 90% of the planet's
earthquakes.

I mean, that sounds
kind of terrifying.

Very scary.

The messages are real,
and I can prove it.

a mysterious group
known as Khao Kala UFO,

the group claims
to communicate
with extraterrestrials.

One of their members,

Mark Kuntamestha,
famously posted a video online

that seemingly predicted
the 2011 tsunami in Japan.

Now, members of the group
claimed to be seeing
strange lights

and have received
a new message,

one that predicts a string
of volcanic eruptions.

How are Khao Kala members
in general
preparing for the future?

The Khao Kala group is named
for the remote village

that acts as a home base.

In the middle of town
is the mountain

where we gather
to receive messages.

It is a kind of
Stargate portal.

This is where people have
recently been seeing
strange orbs of light.

It also acts as high ground
to protect them

from the coming
natural disasters.

[Jessica] Who leads the group?

The group was started
by a former
Thai military officer.

He received
the initial messages
but has since passed away.

Now the group is led by his
daughter, a woman named
Somjit Raepeth.

[Phil] Can you connect us
with her?

Will she talk on camera?

I'm not sure.

The authorities have become
concerned about Khao Kala
and are cracking down.

So everyone is being
very cautious.

[Phil] Recently,
local authorities raided

the Khao Kala
Mountain meditation area.

Despite rising suspicion,

the group claims
their activities are peaceful.

Recently, she has been
meditating north of Khao Kala

at a place known
as the Five Buddha temple.

I have a contact named Anne,
who is traveling with her.

She is your best hope
for meeting Somjit.

who meditate are capable

of some, some truly

to comprehend and accept.

there's this guy, Dr. U-Yen,

he's one of the few people

studying this entirely
understudied neuroscience
of meditation.

we might be able to get

as to what these people
are doing if they're doing
something special.

in order to talk to aliens
and receive messages,

how they do that

because I am totally down

for neuroscience

to find out whether
Khao Kala's claims
of telepathic communication

are even theoretically
possible.

a meet
with Dr. Kongpop U-Yen,

a former NASA engineer
turned neuroscientists

who's researching how humans
can unlock the full potential

of our brains through
meditation.

[Phil] And while it might
look like science fiction,

his lab is doing serious work.

This device is an EEG
or electro encephalography
reader.

Electrodes
all over the headset

measure
the electrical activity
inside a person's brain.

So what is happening
right now?

So we are measuring brainwave
of monks to look at
different states of the mind.

Wow.

[Josh] Dr. U-Yen's work
with Buddhist monks,
the all-stars of meditation,

is revealing that
brain function
is significantly altered

and enhanced
during the deepest states
of relaxation.

When the mind is calm,
peaceful,

we open up to answers

that can flow into us
when the mind's clear.

It's like removing the cloud
from the sky.

Is it possible for someone
to use meditation

to reach out past space
and time,

to make contact
with something beyond?

We can try something
even closer

or try to communicate
with someone on Earth.

to a 2014 study

where two subjects
in a Barcelona-based lab

were able to achieve brain
to brain communication,

thanks to a computer-brain
interface.

Scientists theorize
that because human thought

can be broken down
into bio-electric signals,

ideas may someday be
transmittable through a kind
of mental Wi-Fi network.

But could an advanced form
of intelligence

have already mastered
this kind of communication?

Khao Kala members
would say, "Yes."

[Jessica] We're actually
headed up to investigate
the group Khao Kala

who say that they're able
to speak with aliens

through meditation.
Is it possible?

It's very interesting.

That's gonna require
some scientific proof

but you know, we,
we always open up
to the possibility.

So, I can give you
my EEG device,

to see what you come up with.

the brainwaves
of Khao Kala members

while they're supposedly
communicating with aliens,

and tell us if anything

of witnessing the group's
controversial conversations
with ET.

It seems like Khao Kala
is a pretty secretive group.

these groups always
have the best of intentions

and then it just takes
one incident
to have it all head south.

we're told we will find
Mark's contact Anne

is in a remote area
with little infrastructure,

and supposedly where Khao Kala

had their very first
interaction with UFOs.

Based on this road,
they chose
one heck of a remote place

to build their
extraterrestrial inspired
Doomsday temple.

Well, you don't wanna build it
at a shopping mall.

the perimeter of the
temple complex, though,

we realize there isn't exactly
a welcome mat to greet us.

Constructed in 2004,

it features nested statues
of the five Buddhas

that visited Earth.

It is also covered
in more than
five million mosaic tiles

and strange mirrored orbs
that supposedly show
planetary alignments.

The rumor is that the
monks who helped design it

were inspired by,
you guessed it,
extraterrestrials.

So what's been your experience
with Khao Kala?

So that's how this place
was chosen
to build the temple?

Yeah.

[Phil] In fact,
during the temple's
construction,

Khao Kala members
even photographed

what they claim is a UFO
hovering above the site.

But the real hotspot
of sightings is the town
of Khao Kala itself,

where on a remote mountain,

members have reportedly been
receiving messages from UFOs.

The group's leader, Somjit,
is at the center
of all of this.

to investigate a group
known as Khao Kala UFO

that claims
to be able to meditate

and receive messages
from extraterrestrials.

She have some evidence
and she wants

in order to understand
Khao Kala,

we need to know
how it started.

He was a former Sergeant Major
in the army.

And in 1997,
he was deep
in Buddhist meditation

when he started receiving
messages.

A few months later,
he predicted that
there would be a UFO

that would appear
on the third of the month

on a nearby peak that we call
Khao Kala Mountain.

Ten thousand people
went up there

and it appeared
at the exact moment
he said it would.

You can see how it kind
of looks like a flying saucer.

But I just have a really
hard time believing that
that's actually what it is.

It kind of looks like just
clouds
that are shaped like that.

I mean, but there's no other
clouds in the sky.

And you have everybody else
also seeing the same thing.

How many people were there?

Ten thousand people.

When her father said
it would happen...

That's the kicker to me.

And you saw it?

We all did.

At first, people thought
we were crazy.

But as people started to learn
how to communicate
with the aliens,

they started having
more sightings,

and getting warnings about
impending natural disasters.

So how much
is the group growing?

We are growing fast.

We now have thousands
and thousands of members.

So we've heard that
the authorities
have kind of looked into

and even arrested
some members of Khao Kala.

The authorities are threatened

because they don't want
the messages getting out

and starting a panic.

But the world needs

We have seen volcanoes
erupting and great earthquake
shaking cities.

to observe the meditation

to study the effects
for ourselves.

have you been able
to make contacts

with members of this group?

Yes.

And listen, this group
is interesting,

their ideas are obviously
pretty out there.

They are like an
apocalyptic groups,
so are they dangerous?

Are they strange?

What, what's your vibe
on them?

I think when you meet them
one on one,
they're very polite.

They're very nice.
They're very accommodating.

[Phil] But you take a group
that thinks
the world's gonna end

and is getting
specific instructions
from extraterrestrials,

you just kind of don't know
what they might do.

[Josh] To date, Khao Kala
has been
a totally peaceful movement

steeped in Buddhist
meditation traditions,

but there is also
historic precedent

for groups predicting
apocalyptic events
to turn deadly.

In the 1970s, Jim Jones formed
the Jonestown cult in Guyana.

I came to show you

that the only God
you need is within you.

[Josh] Orchestrating
the mass suicide
of more than 900 cult members.

The Branch Davidians created
a compound in Waco, Texas,

and in 1993,
engaged in a fatal standoff
with federal agents.

And in 1996,

39 members of the
Heaven's Gate group
killed themselves,

believing they would be
transported to an
extraterrestrial spacecraft.

For these reasons,
the authorities
are wary of Khao Kala

and their mass gatherings
atop the local peak.

-They're not dangerous... yet.
-[Josh] Totally.

I think there's more going on
beneath the surface
of these people.

[Jessica] Yeah.

And so what's your plan
of attack?

We got pretty good access
to one of their
meditation sites.

This is an area that
they all go to train,
to meditate and mass

and to try to basically
communicate
with extraterrestrials.

Plan is to go there
and to document
in every way possible.

you know, look, even though
this does have
Buddhist underpinnings,

and it's extensively peaceful,

these are a group of people
who believe the world
is coming to an end.

where the members claim

a structure ahead

and to our amazement,
it's filled with people.

the members are already

when somebody receives
a message?

often become intensely warm
as they're receiving

a mobile thermal camera

to see if I can detect
an increase in anyone's
body temperature.

At these settings,

the yellow and red signatures
indicate normal body heat.

But amazingly, one man
in the back is
registering completely white,

meaning the surface
temperature of his face
must be over 103 degrees.

He is absolutely glowing.

Something was different
with him.

The Khao Kala UFO group
that Jess and Phil
are investigating

definitely have some
apocalyptic views
about our future.

But they're not alone.

Back in December of 2012.

People got,
shall we say, nervous

about the so called
Maya Apocalypse.

The fear stemmed from a belief
that the 5,125-year
Maya calendar

was going to come
to an end on December 21st

heralding the end of the world
as we know it.

People also misinterpreted
a prophecy that supposedly
predicted that a planet

or asteroid
would impact Earth.

It was so widespread
that NASA scientists

had to ease people's minds
with some actual,
you know, science,

they released
a video statement
assuring everyone

that there was
no mysterious object
hurdling toward the planet.

And as you may have noticed,

2012 came and 2012 went
and yet, here we are.

The end of the Maya calendar
is just the beginning
of a new cycle,

and reports of our destruction
were greatly exaggerated.

are investigating
a mountaintop

where the members of Khao Kala

claimed to have
regular contact with aliens.

on the hills

think they are getting
messages

from extraterrestrials.

to say that's alien.

I'm not saying it's aliens.

these messages.

that it's weird.

His analysis,
the practitioners
of Khao Kala

appeared to be
in an extremely deep state
of meditation.

And while the readings

by theta brain waves,

that certainly doesn't prove

that they're receiving
messages telepathically.

In the end,
Khao Kala is reminiscent

of many other supposedly
prophetic groups
to come before them,

their leaders
are seemingly welcoming.
