The Beast of Bray Road

is one of the most
fascinating cryptids
in the country.

It has been spotted

in and around Elkhorn,
Wisconsin, for over 30 years.

Eyewitnesses describe seeing

a huge terrifying beast

with razor sharp fangs,
red glowing eyes

and wolf-like features,

capable of moving
at incredible speed

on its hind legs.

Were you thinking,
"I just saw the
Beast of Bray Road?"

Absolutely. Yes.

[Josh] So far
in our investigation,

we've spoken to local
eyewitness, Lee Hampel,

a retired math teacher
who just found

evidence of a fresh kill.

-Oh, look at that. Wow.
-Right there.

[Jessica] That whole
chunk's missing.

[Josh] With a full moon
looming overhead,

we discover large
and mysterious tracks.

Look at that.
That's incredible.

We've got
a potential culprit.

We got
suspect number one.

patrolling the road,

Jess spots something
lurking in the shadows.

are tracking the creature

about a half mile
into the woods
off of Bray Road.

Something was

just got a hit.

[Phil] It's big.

and it looks upright.

face-to-face with it,

of the tree line

The Beast of Bray Road
strikes again.

to search the road

and the surrounding area
for the next few hours.

[Jessica] Oh, we were
so close.

[Josh] But whatever that
mysterious animal was,

it's gone.

We checked the
motion-activated trail cams

that we set up earlier
along the game trail,

but unfortunately,
nothing has triggered them.

As day breaks,

we do one final patrol
along Bray Road.

And just when we think
all hope is lost,

we see it.

Wait a minute.

-Oh, my world.
-Oh!

[Josh]
Hold on a second!

Pulling over...

That's the Beast
of Bray Road.

-[Phil laughs] Wow.
-[Jessica] That's awesome.

-It's huge, it's ripped.
-Oh, yeah.

-[Phil] And chains.
-[Josh] And chains.

Now, I don't know
if this means

that he's been captured,
or if he's just into that.

It looks a little bit like
he's just wearing that.

[Jessica] Yeah, no.
That's a fashion choice.

[Josh] That's his look.

-[Phil] It's a vibe.
-[Josh] It is a vibe, yeah.

I love that somebody
on Bray Road carved this

-and put it in their lawn.
-[Jessica] Yeah.
That's super cool.

[Josh] Look, we got
some killer evidence.

I mean, I think
at the very least

we can say definitively

something large
is lurking around Bray Road.

No question.

The size of the footprint
we saw was giant.

And the hit we got
on the thermal,

that had to be
something big.

[Jessica] Yeah.
And I don't know
what was looking at me,

but that thing
was huge and terrifying.

Okay, so let's talk
next steps.

I'd like to take
the scans,

the photos we have
of the prints we found,

I'd like to take
the thermal footage.

I want to get all that
back to HQ

and start
to get it analyzed.

The size of that print,

we're talking something
bigger than a dog,

probably bigger
than a coyote.

Could even be a wolf.

I really want
to dig into that.

Could this thing
just be a big wolf?

Just, the other thing
I think we haven't

explored enough
is the genesis
of this whole thing.

What do we really know
about those first sightings?

-And, of course, any other
recent eye witnesses.

So you're saying, Jess should

with the wolf?

Well, we should stick to
our strengths.

HQ to analyze our evidence,

Jess is busy chasing down
new eye witnesses and experts

to help gain new insight

into the creature
behind the legend.

Meanwhile, Phil's headed to
the Shalom Wildlife Zoo,

a large wildlife sanctuary
in southern Wisconsin.

If the tracks we found in
the cornfield do belong to
a massive wolf,

we need evidence
to support that.

And that means getting
up close and personal

to some of North America's
most famous predators.

[Phil] David Fechter is
a wildlife biologist from
the University of Wisconsin.

He's been studying wolves for
over 15 years

and has recently been
tracking wolf populations

throughout
the Northern States.

You know, we're here looking
at the Beast of Bray Road.

One of the theories
out there is

that it could be
a misidentified wolf.

-Mmm-hmm.
-So I wanna check out
some wolves.

Well, you came
to the right place.

[Phil] In addition to some
big bad wolves,

this sanctuary is home
to 75 species

and more than 750 animals,

including a number of
apex predators,

like pumas
and grizzly bears.

Now what do you know

about the Beast of Bray Road?

Well, it's kind of a wolf-man,
or a man-wolf.

It's a creature that nobody
really knows for sure.

But it definitely makes its
way into the Wisconsin lore?

No doubt about it.

[wolves growling]

Oh, my gosh!

Oh, those are beautiful.

That would be our
gray wolves.

[Phil] Wow!

[wolves growling]

[Jessica] While Phil chases
his tail on his wolf theory,

I've managed to score
a meeting

with the news reporter
Linda Godfrey,

the journalist who first
broke the story of
the Beast of Bray Road

back in 1991.

And she's literally written
the book on the subject.

She's investigated every
single report

and eye witness sighting for
the last three decades.

If there's one person
to talk to about this...

it's her.

So what got you involved with
reporting on the
Beast of Bray Road?

I was pretty new as
a reporter

and I had

a meeting with the county
animal control officer.

He opened up his desk drawer,
pulled out a file folder

that was marked "Werewolf."

Now when you've got a
county official...

Uh-huh.

...with a manila file folder
marked "Werewolves,"
that's news.

Oh, yeah.

I remember being
completely shocked when I
first read about that.

Right, exactly.

He handed me this file that
had people's names,
addresses...

what they, had said in the way
of their remarks.

And they, were describing
something that looked like a
wolf

or a German Shepherd

running on
its hind legs only.

So that rules out just about
every other animal.

So what has been the earliest
recorded encounter

of the Beast of Bray Road that
you've come across?

Well, I think the first really
solid one happened in 1936.

Mmm-hmm.

Where, um,
a night watchmen found

a strange creature digging
with long claws

into some sort of
burial mound.

Whoa.

So this has been going on
for a long time?

Oh, yes.

[Jessica] Linda has uncovered
hundreds of documented
sightings

that stretch as far back
as 85 years.

And many of these
incidents occurred
well beyond Bray Road.

Some as far as
40 miles away.

Not only does this add
55 years of incidents
to this legend,

it also suggests the
beast has a wider range

than we thought,

venturing well beyond
Bray Road.

Are these full-grown?

Uh, no, they're only
half-grown.
They're six months old.

So they, will double in size
when they, get to be adults.

But wolves can get up
to 200 pounds.

Two hundred pounds?

Yeah.

So how many wolves are there
in Wisconsin?

Well, there's thousands of
them at this time.

-Really?
-Yep.

They moved in from Minnesota

through to Eau C.

They're at the point now
where they're...

You know, they're basically
expanding their territory.

So with this idea of
the Beast of Bray Road,

I can't help but wonder
is if people are seeing

a really big wolf in
southern Wisconsin.

In the southern part of
Wisconsin,

what do we have?
A lot of farmland.

Cornfields, hayfields.

That is the favorite food of
all the white-tailed deer.

There's a huge population of
white-tailed deer down here.

So who eats white-tailed deer?

These guys.

Oh, yeah.

So, for somebody that's
telling me I saw a wolf down
here, I'd say,

"Ah, I believe you."

So there's an experiment
I want to do.

We saw paw prints on
Bray Road.

And they, were big and they
certainly looked like they
could be canines.

So one thing
I would love to do,
get a really clean paw print

that then we can photograph,
document,

compare to
what we saw on Bray Road.

So...

Can I go in there?

Ooh.

You can tell me no.

[David] We'll give it a try.

But they're gonna look...

And they, got 2,000 pounds
of biting pressure.

Well, I didn't bring a cup
in my backpack today.

So...

But I did bring a specialized
footprint mold kit

that will allow us to compare
a verified wolf print

to the lidar scan of the print
we made in the field.

But getting this print isn't
going to be easy.

And maybe not
even safe.

for them to settle down

to get a clean print.

Hopefully, Jess is having
more luck.

After investigating all of
these reports, what do
you think it is?

It could be something
that is injured

and cannot walk in
a regular way.

It could be
some type of...

uh, an adapted

wolf species,
to walk and run
on its hind legs.

But there are other people
who think that it's a spirit.

So you think there's
a possibility that it is
something natural

-but...
-Mmm-hmm.

...you know,
not to shut the door
on paranormal.

That's a great way
to put it.

If Linda thinks the beast

could be some kind of adapted
wolf species,

we also have to consider
hybrid wolves.
Wolves bred with dogs

by people who often
sell them as pets.

But wolf dogs rarely loose
wild wolf behavior,

which makes them unpredictable
and often difficult to handle.

Wolf dog attacks have been
reported for decades.

For example, back in 2020,

a 2-year-old
lost her arm to one.

With illegal hybrid breeding
an issue in many states,

I wonder if the strange
five-toed tracks we found

could be the result
of some kind of mutation.

[Linda] This is really
the drawing that I made

that most people agreed
looked exactly like
what they saw.

When have you ever
seen a dog

hold its prey
by its palms upright?

Never.

Linda has one more
enticing piece of information.

She tells me about
a brand-new eyewitness

who contacted her
only days ago

after having
what Linda believes

was an encounter
with the beast.

She also agrees to share
her investigation files

including a detailed map
of hundreds of

credible sightings
of the creature.

[Phil] A paw print,
that's it.

Now the one that we saw on
Bray Road was 5 inches

both wide and long.

Know what, let me
measure this right now.

Let's see what we've got here.

This is coming in at...
about three
and three quarters wide.

And about... 5 inches long.

These aren't full-grown.

So how much bigger do you
think the track will get?

I would say it would go
at least 30% bigger
on an adult wolf.

So if that's the case, then

with that track
that I saw out there,

at that size,
how big of a wolf are
we talking about?

I would say probably
120 pound animal.

It would definitely be a--
an adult, several years old.

Okay.

Well, thank you. That was
an amazing experience

to get up close
with these wolves

and to leave with all
my body parts intact.

Thankfully,
I was able to get

a perfect print from the wolf.

I'll send photos back to Josh

as a point of comparison
for the lidar scan

of the print we found
near Bray Road.

When I reconnect with Jess,

seems she hit the jackpot
by acquiring Linda's

personal files.

How many stories are
we talking about?

I mean,
we're talking hundreds.

This runs deep.

[Phil] And we've arranged
a meeting with

the eyewitness
that Linda believes

is one of the most
credible in the area.

-Hi!

[Phil] Hi, Sophia.

[Jessica] Sophia Bierman,

a bookkeeper
and Minnesota native,

moved to Wisconsin in 2010.

And not long after,
she began having

a series of strange encounters
on her property.

[Phil] So, tell us about
your first encounter.

It was in... July.

-Okay.
-And it was30
in the morning

and it was dark out,
and I let my dog out.

And I came out that door,

and I was standing here.

All of the sudden,
I see this thing.

It moving along
the lot line over there.

I couldn't believe what I saw.

It has fur and
the hair was long.

And this thing was muscular
up here in the chest.

And its arms were
down to its knees.

And the knees were bent
like a canine.

Based upon
the physical description

that you think
you saw that night--

Not think. Listen.
I know what I saw,

and as long as I live,
I will never forget it.

And it was walking upright
the whole time?

The whole time.

Obviously, a bear
or something could stand up

for a little bit of time,
but not--

not that entire lane.
And, also, why would it?

Walked straight up.
It never went down
on four feet.

My dog was petrified, too.

If I hadn't have seen it
with my own two eyes,

I would have never believed
something like this either,

but I did.

I did.

[Jessica] Sophia is absolutely
convinced of what she saw.

And it wasn't
an isolated incident.

It happened again,
just recently.

I found a footprint over here.

My bearded irises,
something stepped right in it,

and it was huge.

I mean, you've got
a window here,

were you able to see anything?

Well, that's my daughter's
bedroom window,

and she would come
running up to me and say,

"Mommy, there's a monster
in the bushes."

Then I'd come and find this.

Out here.

That's when I went and
got my phone and took
a picture of it immediately.

-Can we see it?
-You sure can.

Awesome, thank you.

Whoa! That's crazy.

[Josh] Phil and Jess
are talking to an eye witness

who had a close encounter

of the wolfman kind.

[Sophia] It was huge.

[Phil] That's crazy!

That is really big.

Like you can see,
it starts there.

-Heel and toes.
-[Jessica] Mmm-hmm.

[Phil] From the photo,
you can make out
a heel pad and toes.

But because of the dark soil
and the angle of the photo,

it's difficult to make out
any more details.

But the overall size

does appear similar
to the print we found
near Bray Road.

I know what I saw and I know
what people are going to think

but I know this thing
is real,

and it's out there.

[Jessica] Sophia's sightings
at her residence

are consistent with reports of
the creature near Bray Road,

which means

the beast has a wider range
than we originally thought.

At this point, we check in
with Josh

to see what's he learnt
from all the evidence

that we've gathered

and to find out what came back
after lab analysis.

though, back in your office.

the heat turned up,

a little fire going, there's
zero werewolves here.

It's-- It's perfect.

I don't mean to rub it in.
Listen I'm not

I've been hard at work.

Analyzing the evidence
that we collected together.

Okay, what you got?

Let's start with the print
that we found in the field

that we did the lidar scan of.

I had a colleague analyze
the lidar data,

we were able
to enhance the print.

And, structurally,

it does not appear
to be a bear print.

We got a 95% chance
that this is canine.

That's the good news, but...
the weird news is

the enhanced view of it
also shows what looks pretty

clearly like a fifth toe.

Hang on. So,

if we're talking about
the potential of this
being a wolf,

under normal circumstances,

we would not see
a fifth toe pad there.

Maybe there are some
dog breeds that can
present it,

but even so, it rarely
shows in the actual print.

Exactly, so the question is,
could it be some sort of a...

of a hybrid.

Could it be a one-off?
Could it just be a...

genetic mutation.
The answer is...

we don't know what it is.

-Hmm.
-Huh!

Were you able to glean
anything from the video we
got off the side of the road?

We sent it to
a video-processing lab here.

They did every forensic test
they could under the sun
on that footage.

The sad truth is there
is not enough metadata

to really brighten enough
to actually

see the silhouette
of whatever the animal is.

Jess, I told you
to get more metadata.

So, we know it's an animal,

we know it's something
nocturnal.

It seems like it's something
on the ground.

But as to what it is,
we have no idea.

Okay, so, like,
where does that leave us?

So, I started to get really
interested by the files

that you sent me from Linda,

and I think
I'm on to something there,
which is that, you know,

a lot of the sightings
that she logged

aren't actually from
Bray Road.

We know there's
a high concentration

of deer and prey animals

out in that area that are
feeding off those corn fields.

So it may be that whatever
animal is there,
whatever people are seeing

is just using
Bray Road as a hunting ground,

and it actually lives
somewhere else.

Which makes sense.
If we know anything about
large predators,

it's that they will go
a long distance away
from their den

to get to a high density
of easy prey,

and Bray Road's got it.

Right. So I cross-referenced
satellite data from that area

with all of Linda's reports,
and it turns out that
there is

a really, really interesting
old-growth forest less than
10 miles from Bray Road.

And it's only about 15 miles
from Sophia's house,
your other eye witness.

And this is a totally
wild place,
like, untouched by human.

And it is right
in the middle of all
these sightings.

It sounds like a perfect place
for the den
of a large predator.

Bingo. So I would
get out there

and start investigating
that area.

Awesome. Well, you
certainly didn't disappoint.

Oh, one more thing.

There aren't any roads
that lead into this

overgrown forest,

so I've arranged for something
to speed up

your investigation.

[Phil] Animal dens are often
located close to a water
source and this forest

lies on the edge of this
massive fresh water lake.

And wolves are known
to return

to their den every few days
depending on the season.

So that means we might
encounter this mysterious
predator tonight.

[Phil] Josh hooked us up
with a high-speed hovercraft

designed to travel
on a cushion of air

over land and water

that will help us
gain access to

the shore from extremely
shallow water.

Okay, so look at this.

This is old-growth forest.

Wolves can travel 30,
40 miles in a single day.

So conceivably, anything that
living here could end up
in Sophia's backyard.

-And Bray Road.
-[Jessica] Yeah.

No, we're well within
that range.

I'm trying to pull us in
right here.

[Jessica] Thank you.

-Let's head
into the woods.

[Phil] We'll be on the hunt
for any signs of a den,

which could be a cave,
an overhang,
or dug into the ground.

This is some dense forest.

[Jessica] Mmm-hmm.

[Phil] And it's huge.
So I say we split up

and try to cover more ground.

One thing I think
we need to remember,

wolves generally travel
in packs.

There could be more than one.

Wolf monster?

Just be alert, Jess.

[Phil] For me, the most
reasonable explanation
for the Beast of Bray Road

is a wolf.

So, I'm looking for scat,

fur, tracks, or anything else

that could confirm that
wolves are living and hunting
in these woods.

I wanna take out
the thermal and see
if I pick up anything.

[whispering] Yeah,
I'm not seeing
anything right here.

I say we try to move
up there a little bit more.

I kinda don't wanna
find it,

because I'm a little scared.

But what are my options?

Uh, record it and run.

Try not to get eaten.

[Phil shushing]

Something big is breaking
branches right down there.

I just got a hit.

I feel like there's
a pretty good chance

that whatever is eating this

may wanna come back
for some of these scraps.

with whatever that
animal wants to do.

So I think we gotta
back off a little bit.

We know that there's
something out here.

the thermal drone,

so we can scan over the top

and see what might
come back?

[Phil] We bagged
some of the remains
to send for lab analysis,

but leave most
of the carcass intact

to see if its killer
will come back for seconds.

[Phil] On the ground,
our visibility
is extremely limited.

This drone, equipped
with thermal imaging,

will give us a bird's-eye view

of any movement
along the ridgeline

where that deer carcass
is splayed out.

I'm kinda thinking,

you should go halfway
between where we are
right now

and the bones,

so that if I find something
on the thermal drone,

you can get eyes on it.

into the woods by myself,

where there is a wolf
or some sort of beast...

towards the bones

and start doing a scan
in that direction.

if anything's coming my way.

I'll keep my eyes peeled.

Not getting any unusual
heat signatures out there.

[grass rustling]

It is so creepy out here.

Yeah, let's put Jess
in the middle of the forest

at night by herself.

She can outrun a wolfman.

[Jessica] Look. Scratches.

That's like 8 feet up
on that tree.

Nothing on four legs
could have done that.

[Phil] After nearly an hour

of running surveillance
overhead,

I haven't spotted anything.

Come on.

I'm starting to think that
this thing is long gone.

Whoa.

Hang on.

That's not Jess.

What is that? [bleep]

-[radio beeps]
-Jess, I just got something.

It's about 100 yards
north-northeast
of where you are.

It's big.

[Jessica] Okay,
I'm running towards it.

[pants]

All right, Jess.
Can you see it?

No, I can't see anything.

[suspenseful music playing]

Jess, it's right there.

The beast of Bray Road is
consistently described

by witnesses as some
type of large canine

with the ability to
run on its hind legs.

Which is also
the primary reason

skeptics dismiss the story.

But there are
examples of other

four-legged predators,

that exhibit bipedal behavior.

For two million years,
a strange animal known as

the Thylacine, sometimes
called the Tasmanian wolf

or Tasmanian tiger,

roamed Tasmania
and mainland Australia.

It could open its jaws to
nearly 120 degrees.

And while it did walk on
all fours, it was a quadruped,

it could also stand up
on its hind legs

and bound like a kangaroo.

The Thylacine officially went
extinct only 85 years ago.

But sightings
of these creatures

are still being reported in
the Tasmanian wilderness.

[Josh] On the hunt for
the Beast of Bray Road.

[Phil] That's not Jess.

What is that?

[Josh] Phil and Jess pick up
a large heat signature

on the thermal drone.

[Jessica] Okay,
I'm running towards it.

[Phil whispers] Oh, my God.

[bleep]

[repeating] Where'd it go?

I lost it.

[Jessica panting]

All right, Jess,
can you see it?

No, I can't see anything.

Okay, keep scanning,

[Phil] It's right there.

[Jessica breathing heavily]

Phil, I'm not seeing anything.

All right, I'm gonna try
to find it again.

Jess, just saw it again.

It's back towards
where you were before.

Ahh, [bleep].

Okay, I'm headed back.

Holy...

[bleeping]

It's moving fast.

[whispering]
Where'd this thing go?

I'm back where I was.

Where is it now?

Lost it again.

You're not seeing it?

Dude, I'm not seeing anything.

[Phil] Come on.

The thermal easily

picks up this thing
when it's in the open.

But the dense tree cover is

making it nearly
impossible to track.

[whispers] Come on.

[bleeps] Damn it.

It's right here.

[rustling]

[animal snorts]

[whispering]
Did you hear that?

Okay, I lost it again, Jess.
You seeing it?

No, I'm not seeing anything

but I'm hearing
some weird stuff.

I'm not exactly comfortable
being out here by myself.

I say, sit tight for a second.

I'm gonna land the drone
back here,

and I'll run out and
meet you where you are.

Okay, well,
make it quick, please.

[Phil] At one point,
that animal

actually looked like it was
walking on two legs,

but when Jess got close,
it started running away

on four legs,

which matches
our reports describing

the Beast of Bray Road.

Unfortunately, the resolution
of the thermal camera

is too low to determine
if it was a wolf

or something else.

[Jessica] Are you seeing
any tracks?

Nah, not seeing anything.

What is it?

[Phil whispers] Jess.

Holy [bleep]!

We got fur.

-[Jessica gasps]
-[Phil] Yes!

[Jessica] No way.

[Phil] Look.

[Jessica] Check that out.

Oh, yeah!

Like... that could be

from what
just ran through here.

Oh, I would think
that's definitely

what ran through here.

Look, there's
some more up here.

-Where?
-Right here.

-Little strands,
right up here.
-Oh, yeah!

You see it?

[Phil] That's like five feet.

That's pretty high up.

Yeah, it is.

Bag that sucker.

[whispers] Oh, my gosh!

-We still have camera
traps on Bray Road.
-Mmm.

We have some bone,

and they have
toothmarks in it.

Now we have this hair.

So there's still
a lot of evidence

that we have to examine.

[Josh] Having
investigated this case

in the field with my team,

and after seeing
those footprints,

massive eyes,

and thermal footage

of a creature in the brush

with my own two eyes,

there's no doubt that
people are witnessing

something large here.

After collecting
the motion-activated
trail cameras

we set up in the
woods along Bray Road,

we found they had been
triggered multiple times.

The culprit?

Deer.

While it's not
a 7-foot werewolf,

it does provide evidence

that this region supports
enough wild game

to sustain a large predator.

[Phil whispers] Look at this
blood on here.

Ew, gross.

[Phil] That is horrendous.

[Josh] In addition,

deer carcasses found
near Bray Road

and in the old-growth forest

as well as those claw marks

clearly suggest a
predatory presence here.

Analysis on
the bone fragments

collected in the forest

show signs of toothmarks

that are more consistent
with that of a wolf

than a bear.

In fact, DNA tests

performed on the first
samples the team collected

match that of a grey wolf.

Do you see it?

[Phil whispers]
That's pretty high up.

Yeah, it is.

[Josh] Adult grey wolves,

while less than three feet
tall at the shoulder,

can stretch up much higher
on their hind legs

and have been clocked
at speeds of nearly

40 miles an hour.

However, there is no evidence

that they have adapted to run

on their hind legs.

And this behavior has
never been documented.

With additional analysis

of the footprint
we found earlier,

indicating a canine,

the most logical
conclusion here

is that
the Beast of Bray Road

is no werewolf,

but an actual wolf.

And since the
wolf population here

isn't very large,

they would
strike passing witnesses

as something unusual.

There are those
who would disagree.

Those who insist they
saw something towering,

something with glowing eyes,

something monstrous,

lurking on the
edges of Bray Road,

under a full moon.

Perhaps, they're right.

But by the light of day,

the true beasts here

may simply be those

that live in our imagination.
