When I was in the Navy, I
never saw death up close.

We just pointed the guns
at some faraway island.

We never saw the shells
explode or the people die.

A few of months ago, we were
beached in the Solomon Islands.

And for the first
time in my life,

I was face to face with
somebody who wanted to kill me.

I was stronger than he was.

I strangled him
with my bare hands.

As I felt the life draining out of his
body, I prayed to God to help me stop.

When he died,
something in me died, too.

Now, that God used
to give me strength.

Now I don't feel
anything at all.

And it haunted me for a long
time, like it's haunting you.

I just came to believe that I gotta
give more back to life than other men do.
