The personal charisma and magnetism of

Jesus would have been unbelievably appealing.

That unlocked something in them.

This is someone that you want to follow.

After jesus calls matthew.

Matthew invites jesus to a lavish meal.

Man cannot live by bread alone.

They represent this kind of religiosity

That feels judgmental.

Jesus is hanging around with the sinners.

You're hanging around with the tax collectors.

They feel jesus

Is not behaving well.

People will say,

Here is a glutton

And a drunkard

Friend, a tax collectors

And sinners.

It's just not the healthy who need a doctor.

I'm a sick.

Come to call the righteous

Sinners.

Why invite trouble?

Truth always invites trouble.

The truth is that if you provoke the pharisees,

They'll come for you.

And they'll call us sinners.

That's really

A little bit surprising, maybe even shocking to our ears.

And he seems to do it because what he's doing is

Taking himself back from a family relationship

And asserting that his authority,

His relationship, is more of a heavenly one.

Where he knows jesus could do something about this problem.

Apparently she knew that

He could do some kind of miracle.

So it tells us something about mary's recognition

That jesus was no ordinary man.

Do whatever he says.

Take this jar

And fill it with water.

Then draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.

Often times at parties like these,

It is the last wine that is the worst wine.

And it's the vinaigrette. Why?

The master of the feast drinks

This wine that jesus has miraculously created.

And it is the best wine is

The delicious wine.

The wedding feast of cana

Is a dramatic shift in jesus's ministry,

Because it is seen traditionally as his first public miracle.

And so this really sets the stage

For the rest of his public ministry and his public life.

The gospels, unfortunately,

Don't give us a really clear timeline of events,

But we know that sometime after the wedding at cana, jesus

Travels back home to nazareth and goes to the synagogue.

There.

While we might say that the jerusalem temple

Is the spiritual heart of the jewish people at this time,

On a day to day basis, their life would have revolved

Around their village and their synagogue.

They were a meeting place for the village, for banqueting

Purposes, to host travelers as a bank, even.

They were the place where the community came together

As a community.

It would have been quite normal for jesus,

Who was known as a teacher from nazareth,

To have been asked to stand up and read something

In the synagogue.

The spirit of the lord is on me,

Because he has anointed me to proclaim good news

To the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim

Freedom for the prisoners and recovery

Sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free,

To proclaim the year

Of the lord's favor.

Today, as you listen,

This scripture is fulfilled.

What is he saying?

He's going to get us killed.

Through his reading of isaiah.

Jesus is fundamentally claiming that he is the messiah.

The what isaiah prophesied is now fulfilled in him.

The townspeople are

Constantly outraged to hear this from jesus.

They're saying to one another,

Isn't this the son of joseph, the construction worker?

He doesn't have the power to be the expected messiah who will

Liberate us from roman occupation.

They kick him out of the synagogue, believing

That he is a false prophet.

His neighbors intend

To take him to a high place, to stone him,

And to throw him down from this cliff.

God has done all the.

It looks like it's going to be the end of jesus ministry

Before it's really gotten started. No.

But jesus simply passes through the crowd

As if nothing is occurring.

Truly, I tell you,

No prophet is accepted in the hometown.

Jesus being rejected by his own neighbors

Is something that many christians find surprising.

But in the gospels, jesus owns it by making

It a fulfilled prophecy.

But the essence of

This story is true for anyone from a small town

Who goes on to have success and then returns home.

And wonders

How long it would be before you came.

Would you talk about.

He doesn't sleep.

We talk about this sin.

The coming kingdom of heaven.

You speak of the coming kingdom,

But you forget who rules in this world.

We're all mere playthings

To the herod's.

When it comes down to it, you and I

You'll see this son again.

Galilee is so very small.

Jesus has a great personal magnetism.

And the gospels talk about his fame spreading everywhere.

The miracles he did.

What have attracted people from all over judea and galilee.

They come to see him

We now know for certain

That leprosy did exist in the first century a.D.

We know physical evidence

Of this from examining skeletons in the holy land,

Who we're not just talking about some kind of skin rash.

We're actually talking about a disease

That can kill a person.

And so the reaction to that in a world

Before any kind of modern medicine was shock and horror,

And they have a strong sense of contagion.

Lepers were outcast from society, unclean,

Unclean.

You don't run.

Please teach you.

I have heard why you can't.

Are you willing

To help a man like me?

I am willing.

To be clean up.

One of the defining characteristics of jesus

Ministry is

The ways that he's seeking out those on the margins,

Whether it's lepers or these other people

Who need to be healed.

And it's at the margins of the world,

The margins of these communities.

He's going to bring the reign of god.

Tell nobody what has happened here.

Go in peace.

Jesus tries to

Quell the acclamations

That here's a great miracle worker,

Because people would focus too much

On the physical evidence that he was somebody special.

Rather than probing the deeper message

Of what it meant for him to be the son of man

In the gospels, it seems that people are really bad

At keeping secrets.

Jesus keeps exhorting secrecy, and yet the leper tells people

His life has been changed.

John had a question.

He says,

Is it you who is to come or

Is there someone else?

Go and tell john what you have seen

And heard.

The lame walk,

Lepers cleansed.

And the good news is

Preached to the poor.

Blessed is anyone

Who does not stumble on account of me.

By doing these

Healings, he's going to call on the attentions

Of the jewish religious authorities.

It needs to understand.

Let's just see what he has to say.

Once jesus starts performing his public healings

And he is growing a community of followers around him, he's

Actually placing his family back home and nazareth into danger.

We've had stories

About the leper and what you did for him.

When his followers claim he did.

I don't doubt you are doing god's work

Healing the sick, preaching his word.

But news travels,

The crowds, the folly.

They might be seen as threatening.

I sure do.

You even begin

To understand the danger you're placing our family in.

Your mother?

Who? Barely escaping, being stoned for blasphemy.

Who do you think the romans will do

Once they see you surrounded by these crowds?

What do you think they

Will do to us?

Why don't you go to jerusalem

And prove yourself there?

Time is not right for me.

But it is for you.

Do you hear yourself?

Jesus repeatedly says, my time has not yet come.

Often in a quite elliptical way.

So when his brother confronts him,

We can understand why this becomes

A point of contention within the family.

Because jesus has a mission that they don't really understand.

You've abandoned us.

Please remember that you are still brothers.

Why do you think this all came from?

He went to see john.

And john started to write.

Now antipas has locked him up.

And there are some that believe that your son

Speaks blasphemy.

Do you understand what's going to happen?

The world will not hate you.

But it will hate me.

Because I speak out against evil.
