In 1349,
there was a great pestilence and mortality of men
in the kingdom of Britain.
So great a plague has never been heard of
from the beginning of the world to the present day,
or been recorded in books.
For this plague vented it's spite so throughly
that fully a third of the human race was killed.
At God's command, moreover, the damage was done
by an extraordinary and novel form of death.
Many died of boils, abscesses, and pustules which erupted with virulent rage.
Others died in frenzy,
brought on by an affliction of the head, or vomiting blood.
This plague generated such horror
that children did not dare to visit their dying parents,
nor parents their children, but fled for fear of contagion.
In this manner, whole villages were emptied
but for the dead and the dying.
And into this void were drawn the looters, the pillagers, the miscreants
and with them a party of knights charged with a secret mission.
This is their story.
Stay here.
Anzo.
Gabriel.
Go with him.
My Lord.
Risk of death.
I'd rather die by steel than by the likes of this.
It must be done.
God wills it.
Father?
Are you here?
Father!
Father.
Anzo!
Stay back.
You are...
Leuthar of Avignion.
Bless us, Father.
I have what you seek.
Stay here.
You!
Will pay for this!
What kind of nave would attack someone with his cast affliction?
The fools see it as the wrath of God.
They have no experience with the plague.
We can do nothing for her now.
We have to move.
You know where to take this.
Yes.
Keep it hidden.
I am bound by His will.
I know.
Be aware that darkness will be drawn towards it.
Darkness is all there is now.
How can it get any worse?
It will get worse.
Things we cannot be speak of.
Father!
Father, please.
Complete your journey.
Make it not be in vain.
We must make haste.
I'm afraid we've stirred up a hornets' nest.
We must go!
C'mon!
They were four men of war traveling with a priest.
We will find them.
We kill them all.
We will bathe in their blood.
No time to rest, priest!
Can you continue?
- Aye. - I'll carry him.
We need to keep moving.
Anzo!
Raphel.
Gabriel.
Take the Priest!
Father.
Something is wrong here.
Something is very wrong.
Arms...
Father, I beg of you.
Get in the cave.
So help our God.
It smells of death here.
What is this place?
The ass of the world.
Why do they not advance?
It's best not to question these things.
We press on.
Come, Father.
It's a repository for the dead.
They're not all dead.
The bitch.
Bjorn!
Gabriel!
My Lord.
We'll need a way out.
His wound is severe. We need to get Magna.
No time to waste.
Father, hold his head.
Raphel, grab his arms, pull him up gently.
Easy.
Anzo!
There is passage, but... it's quite tight.
We'll have to take our chances.
Move!
Raphael?
This place...
Raphael!
No!
Raphael!
Raphael!
Raphael!
Gabriel?
Gabriel, what happened?
Where's your brother?
My lord...
Bjorn has lost much blood...
He needs water.
Give him mine!
A hand would be nice.
I hope this isn't your idea of a joke, brother.
Let's get you out of this hole.
There.
My Lord.
You are revived, my Lord.
Where's the girl?
You killed her, my Lord.
Your brothers will attend to Bjorn's wound.
Anzo and I will scout for the route ahead.
Unless you think differently, my Lord?
As you say, Father.
See to Bjorn.
Get him to an open clear and start a fire.
We need to cauterize that wound.
I hope you know where you are heading, Priest.
I do.
Up that mountain.
A long way up.
Gently.
Keep watch over him, Will.
What other mysteries do you contain, priest?
If you wish to comment...
Then speak your mind clearly, Anzo.
Such as it is.
You climb fast.
You have a... strength in you.
I can do all things through Him that strengthens me.
In that what your Messiah say?
No...
Those are the words of one that knew him.
A lens.
I've seen such tools before on my journeys deep into the East.
What territories?
I fought with the Hittites.
Studied war with the Kushan.
They use glass to see enemies over distance?
They make fire from the sun.
And look at the night sky.
There's someone out there.
We need to find safe passage.
Priest reckons he's found something.
Or someone.
If we can find them,
they may be able to aid our safe passage, food, shelter.
Good.
Bjorn will need rest.
There!
Argh! Bloody hell, Priest.
Come with me.
What about Bjorn?
We can't leave him.
Go. I don't need a nursemaid.
My Lord.
Stop Anzo!
It's a woman!
A woman about to cut your throat, Father.
And likely to attack again if we turn her loose!
Then we only have one choice.
Anzo!
There is no need for you to send this woman to the afterlife.
Enough!
- She dies! - No!
Please!
I can help you.
Oh! She can help us.
When you've already helped yourself to our food.
You a witch?
Are you!
No! I am Badriyah.
We were brought here to die.
This land is cursed.
And you.
You brought us here?
Did we have any choice?
Will you harm us if we let you go?
I will not harm you.
- She lies! - I swear it!
Anzo... please!
I will help you find your way.
Witch.
You so much as look at me wrong
and I'll bury this thing deep into your throat.
Raphael.
Bind her.
Anzo!
She's given her word.
Witch.
You may be bound and alive.
Or free...
...and dead.
Your choice.
Oh!
And now.
You tell us where you've hidden that food.
Hey!
Bjorn!
You must remove the head!
God take your soul, my Lord.
My Lord.
So many.
Demons.
Where have you taken us, priest?
We cannot linger.
The scent of blood will drive them to a frenzy.
So what else do you know about these... devils, woman?
Enough to know it's not wise
to stay out in the open after dark.
If you want to live.
Free me.
And I will help you.
This land is cursed.
It's Hell on Earth.
That's it.
It's all in the words of the prophet Daniel.
"And many of those who sleep shall slepp in the filthy earth,
shall awake to everlasting contempt."
They are living dead.
She summons our death!
She is a witch.
She speaks the truth.
The Abrahamic doctrines...
For your God's own sake!
Speak plainly, Priest.
The doctrines detail a place known as the Valley of Gehenna,
where they would take those deemed beyond the hope of salvation.
The suicides. The possessed.
Both alive and dead.
Quiet, woman!
This is no Gehenna.
Such a place would be a thousand miles away.
Yet this place seems to serve the same function.
A repository for those few during this foul plague who refused to die.
Trapped in this valley
they festered and they multiplied
until they became something else.
The plague of the living became the plague of the dead.
The dead don't stay dead for long.
I tire of your games, woman!
You simple fool!
What was alive is now dead.
What is dead is alive.
And you!
As long as you live and carry the cup of Christ, you will never survive.
How do you know what it is I carry?
In a world as cursed as this,
it calls out like a candle in darkness.
You carry the cup of Christ?
Priest.
Is this true?
I cannot say.
The legend says that Joseph of Arimathea travelled to these lands
and was given protection at the Castle of the Crow.
Castle of Dinas Bran... Where we...
It is but a legend. There are many more.
We have been entrusted with the transportation of an artifact.
It is up to those greater than I to ascertain it's true significance.
It is the cup of Christ he carries.
I will take you to the edge of the valley
to a passage that will let you out.
- If... - If!
What?
If you take me with you.
We are agreed.
If you betray us,
I'll find you in the afterlife.
Brothers.
Come with me.
We need to keep watch.
Argh!
They are as good as dead, sire.
Are they?
And where are their bodies?
Not good enough.
Then so shall we.
Cybron. We are going.
No.
This is surely dead.
We go inside.
I do not expect you fools to follow.
But mark my words,
if you are not here upon my return,
you will forfeit your share of our spoils.
We go.
For retribution.
Gabriel!
Gabriel!
Father!
My son.
There is little hope for him, now.
If you want to save him...
Use the grail.
It's his only chance.
God.
Bless us and keep us.
Hear our prayer.
We celebrate your creation, water;
refreshing and classing to man.
Almighty God, bless this essence of life
that it may grant life to those of your servants...
Get on with it before he dies.
Oh God.
Creator unconquerable, invincible King,
Victor ever glorious, Who did hold in check the forces bent on dominating us,
Who did overcome the cruelty of the raging enemy,
Who did in Thy power beat down the wicked foe.
Humbly and we beseech Thee in pray to Thee Lord,
look upon this water with favor which Thou has created.
Shine upon it with a dew of Thy light.
Shine upon it with the light of your love
and sanctify it through a dew of your kindness.
Say that through the invocation of His Holy Name,
wherever this water goes may turn aside every attack of the unclean spirit
and dispel terror of death.
Amen.
This is wrong.
Kill him!
Rest easy.
Rest easy.
Wait.
Gabriel...
Kill him, Leuthar!
Here.
Drink this.
For all our sake, kill him before he turns!
He is dying or already dead
and will turn to one of them!
Kill him!
The water will save him!
Or at least, cleanse his soul before it journeys to heaven.
Kill them all!
C'mon!
This is madness.
Fend for yourself, Priest.
Dear Lord.
Watch over the soul of their brother Gabriel,
who comes to you, seeking salvation...
No!
Where is Raphael?
He's with his brother... in the afterlife.
Sacrificed so that we could continue on with your precious cup.
I am sorry.
We could not save you, my friend.
For the afterlife, brother.
Witch.
Is there safe passage?
Do it, Priest.
Do it!
May God have mercy on your soul.
Not likely.
Wait.
What kind of magic is that?
Not magic... nature.
Where are you leading us?
Away from your dead friends.
Hey...
There are always more here.
I think the nature of this valley funnels them to that spot.
They are cast into this lair.
Travel to the edge.
There is nowhere else for them to go.
Is there no other way out?
Only the way we've come.
We are losing daylight.
We cannot attempt this passage at night.
I know a place where we may find shelter.
Come. We'll rest inside.
In my village, there was a witch who would raise the dead.
After five days of death, the dead samb'ahi,
would rise again for seven days of life.
So the dead here live for seven days?
No.
They live until... they fall apart.
I don't know a witchcraft with the power to raise so many.
The wrath of God.
Here.
Eat.
Drink.
Use your cup.
It is said that drinking from his cup,
I'll never be thirsty again;
if I believe...
I'll live forever with God.
How do you feel?
I feel...
Tired...
...and alone.
You're not alone.
What does this symbol mean?
This... is my spirit.
My mother gave it to me when I was born.
Told me never to take it off.
So, it goes with me...
as long as I live, my spirit.
There's something new.
A new kingdom of pain.
I can kill you now,
or maybe you'll like to live long enough
to see what happens...
to your lovely.
Ah!
No! No!
You've caused me a great deal of trouble, Priest.
How you ever can repay me?
Of course, I have taken the girl.
It would be a shame to waste, such a gem.
I think you...
should share the same fate... as your friends.
Get up!
C'mon!
C'mon!
No!
The demons that dwell here...
will appreciate...
...this offering.
No!
No!
C'mon!
I wish I could say...
it will be over quickly.
Come on!
C'mon!
Witch.
- Get up! - No!
We have a long way to go
and you can make things easier on yourself.
I know a faster way out of here.
Why would you help us?
You think I want to stay in this stinking valley
with those things everywhere?
Where do we go?
This is our way out.
Witch!
Leuthar!
The way out is over the top.
Have you been there before?
To make it over the top requires more than a day.
Once the sun has set,
nothing living can survive the cold and dark of those mountains.
Then how can you expect you and I to succeed?
You travel fast and light,
You can make it in there.
You mean "we".
I cannot come with you.
Why not?
When did that happen?
Someone had to grab the arrows and save your life.
You must come with me.
I will not leave you.
I'm not asking you to leave me.
We are running out of time.
I can carry you.
We can get help.
I know people. Wise people.
Learned men of the church.
You fool!
I am already dead!
I am not leaving without you.
Take my spirit...
...and I will always be with you.
Kill me.
I can't.
Please... before...
I can't!
Kill me!
Embrace us.
Oh, oh, God of everything.
Oh, great creator.
And guide us as our bodies die.
Let our souls carry on.
Time carries on.
