JOE:
I'm a fire captain.

And the adrenaline running
into a fire

or a burning building--
it's a life-or-death situation.

You really have to be on point

and use that adrenaline
to your advantage.

And that is really
what drives you to do good.

You want to be
in that situation,

and honestly,
when the calls come in,

I want to be the person
you call.

SAI:
Oh, my gosh.

What is a South Philly girl
doing in Fiji?

But that's

the exciting part.
It's the unknown.

Like, what am I gonna do
when I get out there?

You honestly will never know

what's gonna
come out of my mouth.

The lack of filter-- it gets me
in trouble sometime...

A lot of the times,
it gets me in trouble.

EVA: I'm used to being in a big

male-dominated, uh, area.

I'm a physicist and an engineer,

and at Georgia Tech,
I was the first and only girl

to play on the men's
club hockey team.

So, this does not
scare me at all.

I'm gonna battle my ass off
and I'm gonna beat them.

PROBST:
These 18 strangers
will be abandoned

in the islands of Fiji.

CEDREK:
It's time to play.

It's time to, as my son said,

ball out, whatever that means.

PROBST:
They must learn to adapt
or they'll be voted out.

CHARITY:
Being a flight attendant,
I have to deal

with thousands of personalities.

So, I have played Survivor
in a metal tube

for nine years, baby.

PROBST:
In the end, only one will remain

to claim
the million-dollar prize.

DAVID: I want to be the hero.
I have no problem

waving a giant sign, be like,
"You need to worry about me."

Who will have what it takes
to outwit,

outplay and outlast
all the rest?

This is Survivor 48.

[whooping]

SHAUHIN:
I have imagined the feeling

of playing Survivor
for a very long time.

Everybody is

like a pack of wild dogs

being held back
by their leashes.

You're all sizing each other up.

[whooping]

And you look to another tribe,

and it's like,

"Aah!

I'm going to eat your lunch."

Welcome to Survivor 48.

[whooping, cheering]

- Respect.
- Let's go.

That might be

the best initial reaction
I've ever heard.

Look at you all.

[whooping, cheering]

Let's go!

Let's go, Jeff.
Let's go, Jeff.

So, let's talk about this.
Here we go.

We've got 18 strangers,

different walks of life,
different generations,

different education,
different occupations,

different belief systems,

different work ethic.

But you all have
one thing in common.

From the comfort of your couch,

you all heard the call
of Survivor,

and you answered it.

And you left
your ordinary world behind.

And here you are
on a tiny piece of land

in the middle
of the vast Pacific Ocean

in the Mamanuca Islands
of beautiful Fiji.

So, let's explore
how you got here.

In the middle.
What's your name?

It's Mitch.

Mitch, when did you first
really hear the call and say,

-"I'm gonna apply?"
- Yeah.

[haltingly]:
So, growing up as a person

who has a speech impediment,

um, I remember

watching Survivor: Amazon,

and there was a contestant
on the show

who also had

her own struggle.

And it's like,
"Wow. Here's someone out here,

"playing Survivor

who also struggles
with something, and..."

But Mitch, that was The Amazon.

- That was years ago.
- [laughing]

- What took you so long?
- MITCH: Hey.

Listen, Jeff, I've been trying
to get out here

for the last 20 years.

[laughing]

- PROBST:
We're glad you're here.
- Wow.

Woman in the front.

Hi, Jeff. How are you?
My name's Chrissy.

Chrissy, give me
your Survivor story in terms of

when you finally decided,

"I think I need
to take a shot at this."

Well, I've been watching
since day one.

I was 30 years old
when your first episode aired,

so I'm a little older,

and I was literally laying
at home in my pajamas

eating my M&M peanuts.

And you were standing there
with your arms wide open,

and you're like, "Apply now."
And I'm like,

"He's talking to me." So, I pull
out my phone, and I'm like,

"Boop, boop, boop, boop."

Never thought
somebody like me'd

be on the beach right now
talking to you.

- Love it. Glad you're here.
- CHRISSY: Thank you.

Guy in the front.

There's a theme here saying,

when you finally heard
that call to action,

it was because you believed
I was talking to you.

Was that the case for you?
And what's your name?

My name is Kevin,
and absolutely.

I started watching with my dad
at a really young age.

Uh, what really got me excited
about Survivor

was season 13, Cook Islands,

when I watched Yul Kwon, and

I saw someone
who looked like me.

And he wasn't just smart.
He was buff

and he was talented
and he was strategic.

And ever since then, I was like,

"I'm gonna try
to get on the show, but

I'm so weak and I'm so small."

But when I saw
David vs. Goliath,

season 37,
that's when I said, "Okay,

"the Davids are out here.

They're surviving.
Why can't I do it?" And,

not gonna lie-- when I first
came out on the beach,

I thought it was
David vs. Goliath again.

- [laughing]
- There are some big,

giant behemoths here,
but it's okay.

'Cause you know what?
We're good, too.

- [applause]
- [snorts]
- PROBST: All right.

So, let's review.
Here's what we've learned.

The call can come
in a lot of different ways,

in a lot of different times,

and stir a lot
of different emotions,

but the result is
you're all now here,

literally standing
at the threshold

of your adventure.
And from this point forward,

every step you take,

every action you make,
will define your journey.

This is where fear
can start to arise.

So, you got to make
a big decision, philosophically.

"Am I going to commit
and attack this game

or am I gonna hesitate
and risk getting left behind?"

And here's the rub
with all of this.

Just because you attack the game

doesn't mean
you'll be successful.

You can still fail.

But failure in the pursuit

of something amazing--

that's admirable, that's worthy,

that's worth
getting up off the couch

and leaving
your ordinary world behind.

Failure due to fear--

why even bother?

- [whoops]
- Mm-hmm.
- PROBST: All right.

Shall we get to tribe names?

[all voicing assent]

On this end, wearing orange:
Civa.

- You represent the sun.
- [cheering, whooping]

In the middle, you are Vula.

[cheering]

You represent the moon.

And on the end, in purple: Lagi.

TRIBE:
Lagi!

[whooping]

You represent the entire sky.

All right, are you ready
to get to your first test

- as new tribes?
- Yeah.
- JOE: Get it on.

PROBST:
For your marooning challenge,

two tribe members are gonna race

down the beach,

crawl under a muddy net,

retrieve a very heavy chest
and bring it back.

Once you have it,
the next two go.

Once you have all three chests,

three tribe members will race
back down the beach,

back under the muddy net,
and work together

to get to the top of
a steep ramp to collect a key.

You'll then use that key
to unlock your chest

and retrieve three sandbags.

The three remaining
tribe members

will then race
to land their sandbags

on three different targets.

First tribe to finish
earns their camp supplies.

You know what it is.

A pot, a machete and a flint.

It is not much,
but out here, it is everything.

The two losing tribes
will have to try

to earn it another way.

PROBST:
All right, are you ready

to take your first step

These chests weigh a lot.

Once I hurt my shoulder,
I felt like

I wasn't able to give it my all.

So, in my mind, I'm thinking

there's only one opportunity
right now

for your tribe
to think of you as an asset.

So, I either
am going to fail again

and it'll be the worst opening
of my Survivor journey,

or I can change my fate around.

[shouting, whooping]

SHAUHIN:
On the way to our island,

our new home, covered in mud,

screaming at the top
of our lungs

'cause we just won
the marooning challenge

on Season 48
is an all-time memory.

- Yeah!

SHAUHIN:
It's knowing

that you're living one
of the best days of your life

while you're in the best day
of your life.

- Hi. I'm Eva.

So, I grew up
playing hockey my whole life.

Um, there just isn't
women's hockey in the South.

THOMAS:
I think first impressions

go so far in this game.

So, like,
I'm looking at everybody

and I'm just trying
to figure out

who they are
so then I could filter

my story and what I was saying

to fit the tribe appropriately.

- Okay. Hi. I'm Thomas.
- Hi, Thomas.

I work in music.

- I'm a music publisher.
- Ooh.

THOMAS:
I felt like there was
a lot of pressure,

especially because when I look
at my tribe, you have Joe,

who's, like,
this enormous firefighter.

You have Shauhin.

He's in shape.
He's-he's very confident.

Then we have
a female hockey player

who plays hockey
on the boys' team.

And then you have Star, who is
a literal basketball player.

And then, it's, like,
me and Bianca.

So, it's like, you're instantly
looking at everybody.

You're going, "Oh, no.

Am I the weakest link?"

- Yo.
- We got a boat.

And a pot and machete
and we got our bags.

THOMAS:
I am not very strong, but

I can bond
with pretty much anyone.

JOE:
Do we form this

on the ground, and then,

raise it up, or do we leave...

'Cause how do we attach that?
Do we just scoot it to the side?

- Yeah.
- THOMAS: Listen,

as a music publisher,

- this is my area of expertise.
- [laughs]

Me and Shauhin

and Joe-- we're

just bonding in a way
that I would never expect me

and two straight dudes to do.

But I also get good vibes

DAVID:

I feel pretty good

about our tribe.

and the brawn.

I'm incredibly disappointed.

But our group
seems the strongest

as a unit, and

I think we're gonna be okay.

I'm a lieutenant on the Chicago
Fire Department, and

my job is totally
gonna help me out here.

I love it, honey.

CHRISSY:
Not that I'm gonna boss him
around or anything, but I know

how to deal with different
personalities. I think

this is gonna be fun.

We can make an initial
lean-to with this.

Should it be
one of these dead ones?

Do you think that'd be stronger?

DAVID:
I mean, I hung from it, so...

- Come on.

Currently,
I'm a stunt performer,

so I perform stunts,
do high falls, fighting.

So, I literally play a superhero
for a living.

And I know they're gonna see me
as that character sometimes.

I can make fire with bamboo

if we don't have a flint
for whatever reason, so...

You could do it without flint?

I should be able to. Yeah. I've
done it quite a few times, so...

DAVID:
They might see me as the hero.

They might see me
as the villain.

Truth be told,
sometimes, I'm both.

But out here,
which one's it gonna be?

We're gonna find out.

- So, I don't drink a lot
of water.
- Oh, I love water.

- KAMILLA: What?
- CHRISSY: Really?

- That's terrible.
- I'm 38.

I think I'm doing okay.

Hopefully, my charm

has won people over enough
that they can

kind of look past the muscles
and see me more

than a physical challenge threat

and actually,
as a valuable ally.

I am 45, and...

STEPHANIE: Hell, yeah.

So...

First impression
of the tribe around me

is these are an amazing
group of people.

But from a physical standpoint,
we are an underdog team.

CEDREK:
At the challenge, Kevin

had an injury, and,

ultimately, we lost,

so, we didn't get our supplies,

and now we just have to regroup

and move forward.

Logs. Logs of bamboo?

- STEPHANIE: Yeah.
- SAI: Yeah. Yeah.

STEPHANIE: I am chomping

at the bit, ready to play.

I cannot wait.

In my professional life,
I get to decide

what we do, when we do,
how we do it.

But out here,
you try doing that,

it could put a target
on your back.

I'm almost thinking
maybe over here

because it's a little bit
more enclosed.

MARY:
Or we can take two people...

STEPHANIE:
So, I

already want to practice

sitting on my hands.

I think that will be
the key to my game,

is not taking action

when I might direly want to.

I feel like... I feel like
you have to split it.

like, my mom or some ...

these hoochie mamas

are just playing
the "get to know you" game.

But I don't want to build

camaraderie around the campfire.

That's not what I'm here for.

Yes, that's a part of it,

but I need to know about
the longevity of my game.

So, what I need is a core four.

SAI:
Okay, so, um,

can we lock in three?

If we lose.
Not saying we will.

A-And I think...
Is it Kevin?

- Oh, I love him.
- JUSTIN: Kevin, yeah.

- Yeah, 100%,
especially early on.
- SAI: Okay.

Okay. Let's keep going
till we have something.

- I'll grab something.
- Okay.

JUSTIN:
Sai is definitely
out here to play.

She seems willing
to work with me, which is great.

Early on, it's-it's good
to have those bonds

because no one wants

to be the first one out.
No one does.

SAI:
Pinky promise.

I locked my boys in like that.

I definitely
hit the ground running,

and it feels like
the right thing to do.

If you're gonna play this game,
come out here swinging,

and I'm taking big swings
because

this is my season.

KYLE:
Losing the challenge--

I mean, that was horrible.

One of the worst feelings ever.

Even if it wasn't
technically my fault,

I still feel
accountable for that.

I always viewed myself
as a teammate

who would get the job done.

I haven't done it so far,

so now I have to get
these supplies for my tribe.

"It's day one of Survivor 48,

"and both your tribes
have already

suffered their first defeat."

KEVIN:
If I didn't hurt my shoulder,

I would feel very confident.

I've trained for this,
I-I got the muscles.

But once I hurt my shoulder,
all bets were off.

I don't want to
let my tribe down, so, there's

no way I'm coming back
empty-handed.

- Here we go.
- Ready? One,

two, three. Go.

My approach is,
take it slow and methodical.

Use your brain.
You have a brain. You're smart.

I can't be going buck wild.

Yes.

Wait.

This.

Where's the key,
where's the key?

Oh.

KYLE:
My method is erratic.

I could not figure out
where the rope was going.

I'm running like a madman.

And everything starts

to sort of fall apart for me.

[grunting]

Come on.

I'm hacking away
at the coconut, and I look up,

and Kyle's actually near me.

He's confused, and he hasn't
figured it out yet.

The key is in the coconut.

So, in my mind,

"Oh, I actually
have a shot in this.

I'm somehow winning."

[grunting]

KYLE:
Finally, once I get my machete,

I got some catching up to do.
Kevin is

well ahead of me.

All right.

KYLE:
As I'm running, I look over

and see that
Kevin is also at his pot,

and, uh, he's trying
to climb up the tree.

[grunts]

And I'm like, "Oh, my God,
I'm still in this."

The parchment said,

"By any means necessary,
get the pot."

KEVIN:
This is not a race
about physical strength.

It's about
who can be the smartest

in figuring out

how to solve these obstacles
the fastest.

KYLE:
At this point,

I just have to
muscle my way through.

Don't give up.

No. Come on.

[grunts] Yes.

KEVIN:
I finally get the pot,

and I'm feeling physically dead.

But I just said to myself,
"Make sure that you beat Kyle."

And I noticed
Kyle was rushing, too.

He's flinging the water,
and a lot of it's spilling.

So, I see him going fast,
and I'm just going so slow,

and make sure
I don't drop any water, and,

you know, I was filling up
a lot of water.

KYLE:
I can't believe it.

As I was filling up the pot,

I accidentally break the jug,

and I knew
the challenge was over.

I know that I've failed again.

I failed now twice in less

than an hour.

But I look at Kevin,
and I was like,

"This guy hurt himself,
and he just worked his ass off.

What's the point of me
just sitting there wallowing?"

Dude, I owe you big-time, man.

- All right.
- KYLE: So, I just thought,

"You know, I'll go over there
and help him."

This was
a me-and-you effort today.

No, not at all.
You got this.

KEVIN:
Thanks.

Kyle helping me tells me
he's a stand-up guy,

by far.

- [laughs]

KEVIN:
And the feeling
of being able to grab

these tribe supplies
is the best moment of my life.

I felt like a screw-up.

Usually,

when I've screwed up,
it affects me,

but here, it affected
everybody that I'm

gonna be playing this game with.

into roles
of what they would do.

what the foundation would be.

The joy in your face every time

it makes me happy.

I am the youngest player
on this tribe,

and I had to demonstrate
my worth right away.

And so I was like,

to contribute to the tribe?"

I'll just

I am on the autism spectrum.

I was diagnosed when I was very
young, just over a year old.

Having autism

gives me a lot of
great strengths for the game,

as well as some blatant

weaknesses. Weaknesses,
for sure, are social cues.

I don't know
when someone's lying to me.

I'm a very direct person

and I expect others
to be direct with me,

and they're not
going to be in this game.

- JOE: That's our girl.

EVA:
But on the flip side,
my autism makes me

so driven.

So, I definitely fixated
on the bamboo. And I was like,

"This is what I'm gonna work on
so that I have structure here."

And so,
I was a bamboo pickup machine.

sparks happening.

As a fire captain,

I want to build strong bonds
within our team.

so what matters to me

is trucking along with people

you feel have your back.

because people
could take advantage of me.

I have autism,

and that's
a really big part of my life.

It's not something...
But that's not something

but when I was a little kid,

They always raised me

that I'm going to struggle

with understanding
when people are lying--

really puts me
at a vulnerable position.

But on the flip side,

I know that there are times

when I may need help.

There are times when
I get super overstimulated.

I call them episodes.

stuck in a loop in my head.

But the thing that I need
is to get grounded.

And so things
to look out for is that

if you see that
I start messing with my hands,

seeming like I'm not being me.

is getting squeezed is a big

immunity challenge?

DAVID:

All right.

For today's challenge,

you're gonna race
over a massive ramp

and through a net tunnel
where one player

will use a Fijian war club

to smash a mask,

releasing a key.

You'll use that key
to unlock a sled

where you'll work
together to move that sled

down a track over sandbags.

When you get to the end, you got
to pull that very heavy sled

to the top of a tall platform

where two players will use
the pieces inside the sled

to solve
a Survivor logo puzzle.

First two tribes
to finish win immunity.

Here are the immunity idols
for Survivor 48.

[cheering]

Shiny.

You have one of these
back at your camp,

it means you're safe. You cannot
be voted out of this game.

In addition,

[overlapping chatter]

working to earn yours.

Big enough stakes?

- Oh, yeah.

All right, I'll give
you a minute to strategize.

- We'll get it on. Here we go.
- [all whooping]

CEDREK:

PROBST:
Got to get everybody
up and over that net.

EVA:

- CEDREK: Come on, Stephanie.

PROBST:
It's gonna be Kevin
working on the mask for Vula.

First you got to untie the club.

Civa struggling.
Let's go!

Gonna be David
on the mask for Civa.

- [cheering]
- You got to untie that club,

then smash that mask
to drop your key.

Joe has it. Here he goes.
One big swing.

[grunts loudly]

PROBST:
That'll do it. You're good.
Get the key.

Kevin working on the knots.

David's still
working on the knots.

You're good. Go, Lagi.

- Grab your handles.
- Go.

- PROBST: Here goes Kevin.
- Right through the eye, Kev.

- [grunting]

There it is.

David trying to smash it.

to move that sled.

SHAUHIN:

PROBST:
It is Lagi out
for an early lead.

They've got their sled. Now
you got to move those sandbags.

[overlapping shouting]

Kevin has
the sled released for Vula.

PROBST:
David has it released for Civa.

- CEDREK: Go, go, go.
- CHRISSY: Go, go, go!

- I'm front right.
- KYLE: David, here's yours.

PROBST:
You got to get those sandbags
on the table.

Then you're gonna move
that sled over the sandbags.

You want to keep 'em
as flat as you can.

You got to get up and over.

It takes everything you have.

It is Lagi in the lead.

Then Vula and Civa
neck and neck.

- Up and over.
- Go. Keep going.

- PROBST: You're good, Civa.

MARY:

PROBST:

- Take it to the bag.

- PROBST: Lagi continues
to be in the lead.

They've stacked
their second set of sandbags.

SHAUHIN:
A little to the right.

- JOE: Keep driving.
- EVA: Forward.

- CHRISSY: Up.
- MITCH: Go, up, up.

- Keep going.

- SHAUHIN: Come on, come on.

Now you pull out your handles

and you got to
get it to the top.

Civa's in this now.

Get out those handles
and catch that rope.

- High.

don't worry about me.

Here comes Vula.

Everybody's in it right now.

PROBST:
You're gonna use that rope

and the handles to get
a very heavy sled

to the top.

PROBST:
Civa's making up
a lot of ground right now.

- It is Civa now in the lead.

Vula still working.

SAI:
Pull!

PROBST:
Get 'em all on there first.

- All the pieces on the table.
- Focus.

MITCH:

PROBST:

- It is Bianca and Thomas
for Lagi.
- CEDREK: Come on, pull.

to get to puzzle phase

You know, I was on the puzzle.

You know,
it's really hard, like,

and I feel like
we were so close.

I-I volunteered,
I put myself out there,

and so I'm sorry.

The vibe walking back into camp

was rough, and I could sense

that folks wanted to hear me
take some responsibility.

It's been weighing on me

and so I just wanted
to make sure I said it.

I think that
earns you authenticity

and accountability points
with folks.

No one likes to work
with a delusional queen.

I gave that ... my all.

Like, I'm so mad.

A hundred percent
too little, too late.

Stephanie raised her hand
for the puzzle,

and if you're going to put
yourself to lead, you finish it.

She panicked at the puzzle
because she spent

- more time doing... this.
- Y-Yeah. Figure out...

- And I was like,
"Get a piece, put a piece."
- Yeah.

Steph feels a little bit
on the outs right now,

but we kind of both
messed up on the puzzle,

so, for me,

I don't care who goes home
as long as it's not me.

CEDREK: After today,

it just makes it like...

- I think it has to be her.
- It makes it very clear.

- No, 100%.
- Like, there's a clear reason.

SAI:
It has to be Stephanie tonight.

And I think the thing
that's her Achilles' heel

that's kinda, like,
stabbing her in the butt cheek

is that she doesn't listen
to people around her,

and I can't work with that.

STEPHANIE:
I just feel terrible.

You didn't do the whole thing.

- We did it all together.
- [laughs] Yeah.
- MARY: Yeah.

- Yeah, I know.
- Don't-don't blame it
on yourself.

MARY:
Stephanie may be feeling down,

but when we come back
to the camp,

I'm ready to pounce.

I'm ready to have
these conversations

and get the one person that
I don't trust on my tribe out.

For me, my priority is trust.

- Yeah.
- I have nothing against Sai.

- Right.
- But I would put Sai

'cause I trust you
more than I trust her.

I trust you more
than I trust her.

From the beginning,

I have not trusted Sai.

She's always gone, scampering

around the island,
looking for an idol.

It's like,
"You're trying way too hard.

Like, can we make
some connections first?"

That's a perfect way
to not garner anybody's trust.

I'm not gonna put
your name down,

even though
the puzzle thing happened.

- I agree, for sure.
- No, then we're in.

Promise that.

I know Sai is dangerous.

She's playing really,
really hard, really early,

and it's still only day three,

but Sai's been up-front with me
the whole time.

That goes a long way
in this game for trust,

so I really got to make
a decision,

but I'm still trying
to keep in the middle

as much as I can right now.

It's the same approach
I take at the restaurant.

It's just going in the morning,

taking inventory,
seeing where everybody's at.

"Where do you need me?
What can I do?

You know, do you need me
to go get supplies?"

And kind of taking it
from there.

What's-- where's your head at?

Um, my head is Steph.

- Okay.
- And-- But what did they say?

She wasn't really
giving me much, still.

CEDREK:
Really?

- Yeah.
- What did she say?

She just said, like,
"What are you doing?

Like, who do you think
is the weakest one?"

And I'm like, "I think
we all have different strengths.

"I don't think
any one of us is, like,

weaker in something else."

CEDREK:
Did she give a name?

No.

SAI: Stephanie and Mary
are up to something,

but I'm hoping Tribal tonight

plays out the way
we would like it to

and I don't have
to use the idol.

But are we locked in?

I want to make sure
nobody's feeling weird.

I'll go with you guys, yeah.

'Cause that was a long water
walk to not talk about anything.

But if it doesn't play out
the way we would like it to,

I don't mind using my idol.

I just want to use it wisely.

One, two, three, plus Justin.

Then who do we... Cedrek, Sai?

- I would say Sai.
- That's right.

KEVIN:
I know that I'm in a really
good, solid four alliance

with Cedrek, Justin and Sai,

but Mary wants
to make sure that it's

me, Justin, Steph and her, Mary.

And it's hard because
I'm balancing two majorities.

Right now, it's tonight.

It's Sai.

I'm down to, like, stay loyal.

My head's in a pickle right now.

There's something
about Mary that I feel

a genuine connection with.

And I don't want to break that,

and I don't want
to make her distrust me.

But the best part is that I have
so many different options.

And in this game,
it's all about options.

Everyone sees us two as,
like, if they don't know

what we're gonna vote for.

- So, maybe it is time
to, like...
- Yeah.

Steph was really trying
to poke at my brain.

- Yeah.
- I was like, "Listen, uh,
whatever way you're leaning..."

KEVIN:
Me and Justin are kind of riding
this middle wave right now,

and that's exactly how
I wanted to play this game.

- That's what...
- I know Ced's
worried about the idol,

and he wants to make sure
that it's with us.

KEVIN:
I have a really good
relationship with Sai, however,

the idol is not mine,
and that's what scares me,

because she can use the idol.

Sai can have whatever say she
wants to be able to use this.

- Not the worst thing.
- Yeah.

Because then me, you or Ced

- could find the idol.
- 'Cause then that
goes back in the game.

- I know.
It'll just be replanted, right?
- Yeah.

I'm glad I'm in this position

right now,
because now me and Justin

have the control.

It's a really
good position to be.

It's kind of what I wanted it
to be, and, um, I'm excited.

I'm very excited for this.

That is the famous
last Survivor words, baby.

"I think it's going to be
straightforward."

There is a lot going on,

and I don't have
all of the information.

I'm nervous.

Yeah.

When Kevin looks at me and says,
"It's a straightforward vote,"

I'm like, "Those don't
happen anymore, my dear."

I think I'm experiencing,
in real time,

the complications

of what it looks like to play

a slightly lesser
aggressive game,

to not come in hot off the bat

and to not feel like
I am calling the shots.

I just hope that
everybody realizes

the right person
to vote out tonight is Sai.

SAI:
A lot of people in this game

who have been overly confident

has had their torch snuffed,
but I'm feeling

I truly do have agency
in my game,

and my game is good.

So, I'm ready.

Behind each of you is a torch.

This is part of the ritual
at Tribal Council

because in this game,
fire represents your life,

and when your fire's gone,
so are you.

And that will be the case

about the first few days.

What did you anticipate
Survivor would be like

and what is it in reality?

It is the real deal.

This is not
watching it on your couch

on Wednesday nights on CBS.

- Right? Like, in my world,
- Yeah.

I don't do this stuff.

And that's part
of the attraction,

to see can I do, how will I do

and what happens when I do.

- Mary, how about for you?
- MARY: Yeah.

- We are city folk, all of us.
- [laughing]

- MARY: Team City Folk.

Yeah. For us
to have made a fire,

catch crabs,
it's something that I would

never do otherwise,
which is why I want to be here.

But, also,
the pressure and the intensity.

What's the pressure?

The pressure is not knowing
who you can trust.

You think you know
who you can trust,

but here is where
trust is either built,

strengthened or shattered.

And none of us know which one
of it it's gonna be tonight.

PROBST:
So, Stephanie,
even though you just land,

you're trying to establish
shelter and all that,

trust is still immediately
the number one concern?

STEPHANIE:
Yeah. Folks are looking around
and trying to figure out

"who am I going
to get along with,

feel a connection with
or feel a vibe with?"

We're very air sign heavy,

so there's three Libras.

And what does that mean?

- Thank you.
- [laughing]

I don't know.

PROBST:
'Cause it got you
to Tribal Council.

- So...
- STEPHANIE: Yeah. [laughs]

Uh...

Usually, an air sign
is good at communication,

but maybe a little bit
of indecisiveness.

- Are you an air sign?
- I am.

Sai, I don't think you could
have had a bigger reaction.

I got to... That's something
I got to work on, okay?

- Facial expressions.
- Not for me. I love it.

SAI:
It's a lot to unpack there.

Because I am a air sign,

I know for a fact that
I don't typically get along

with other air signs, for the
fact that they are indecisive.

I have to trust that
you're gonna commit,

whether it's in a challenge,
on a vote, on a journey.

That's just how I look at it.

Justin, how do you
receive information

when you're
having a conversation?

Kind of like taking
an order at work, Jeff.

You see someone's order,
and you're like,

"Oh, I never thought
this combination could work,

but let's give it a try."

And it tastes
pretty good sometimes.

Sometimes it isn't so good.

But I think if you take
a sample of different things

that you hear and people coming
up to you and talking to you,

you can really form something
that's-that's special.

PROBST:
Sai, Justin's saying, "I'll
consider all possibilities,"

but that's ultimately
impossible in Survivor

because you can
only write down one name.

So, what do you think
this vote will be about?

Historically,
there comes a time where

your tribe has to decide
do you prioritize strength

or do you prioritize
loyalty in the matter?

Do you build the trust
with the alliances we've created

while also making the people who
feel like they're on the bottom

feel like
they're not on the bottom,

feel very secure
in where they are?

Because you added
this fun little twist

called a Shot in the Dark.

So, if you're not thinking about
all the different variations

and possibilities
of how something may go,

that's not somebody
I want to work with.

Like, if you were sitting on
the beach the first day and just

taking in the stars, meanwhile,
you could look at stars at home.

I think you're
selling yourself short.

I'll also say, like, we can walk
and chew gum at the same time.

You could be
looking at the stars

and playing a hard-hitting game.

Like, it is
really discounting folks

who might appreciate the, like,
environment we find ourself in

to say that you might
not be playing very hard.

Sai...

SAI:
I can appreciate you looking

at the stars, but I can
also appreciate while

you're looking at the stars,
I'm over here

at the water well,
working with somebody,

creating a bond and getting
myself further in the game.

If you always have
your head in the clouds,

when do you find time to be
in reality is what I'm asking.

No one came to Fiji
to look at the stars.

To be clear.

STEPHANIE:
Look, it might not be
the game you would play,

but everybody out here
is playing.

who I trust, who might
see the game the same way as me

You take a group of people,
and you force them

to figure it out,

and I agree with both.

I am kind of both.

I feel like Survivor
meant so much to me

and my family and my dad,
and I wanted to come out here

to try to experience something
for the both of us.

- So, the experience is there,
but I also came to play, too.

And I came to work so hard
to make alliances,

to talk to people,
to gain loyalty.

Trust is so important.
And right now,

this vote right here
will determine

what the trust will be.
