Melissa, I know
that there's a
a lot of influences,
but who's the biggest influence for you?
JOHN LEGUIZAMO was the only person that was able to capture
how I felt about artistry, right?
He's a classically-chained theater artist.
He does solo shows, and he's funny.
And I thought the way that he captured Latinidad
and the coming of age, how to actually grow up
as a diasporican, right, or as a diaspora Latino,
we claim him as Puerto Ricans, right? We totally claim him.
The way that he told story,
and the way that he was able to
do ethnography in such a specific way,
this is how we grow up,
and this is how we live in a blend of two worlds,
that really spoke to me as a young person.
And the way he modeled it
is the way that I modeled my solo shows.
