[Ordinary Greatness]

[Episode 37]

[I Want to Solve a Case]

Qizi.

In the morning meeting,

report the current situation

to the chief.

Come on.

Be careful.

Comrades,

the chief came to work despite his illness.

-Slow down. -Here.

-Slowly. -Slow down.

You two. You two.

Hold him up.

Slow down.

Good.

Chief, you're already like this.

Why don't you rest?

Yes chief.

You should be careful of your waist.

Work is important.

Your health is also important.

You should rest.

That's right.

I didn't think my old pain...

Chief, you're already like this.

Take a few more days off.

You still don't trust us?

Yeah.

What day off?

I have to work.

The waist pain is not an illness.

Besides,

I won't be able to work at the Balihe station for long.

Every single day is precious.

Chief, don't be so sentimental.

You are not retiring.

You're going to be a researcher at the bureau.

Though it's not a promotion,

it's a transfer.

You're welcome to come back anytime.

Come to take a look, right.

Yeah.

What promotion?

We are the police.

We're ordinary people.

We have been working hard at Balihe

to create

a united and warm team.

But this year,

we've encountered many challenges.

Many things have happened.

So for the third quarter...

Don't worry, chief.

During your position as the chief,

no matter what it takes,

our station has to win the first place.

Our chief can retire

with honor.

Our Balihe station

will leave you with something to miss.

It's wishful thinking

for our station to win the first place.

If we can break our highest record,

I'll be satisfied.

We want to be the first!

You got ambitions!

First I have good news.

The bureau decided

that Mr. Zhang Zhijie will study in the Party School for six months.

A round of applause!

Thank you.

Thank you.

Thank you for the trust!

Thank you chief! Thank you all!

I will work hard.

Congratulations, master.

This is to prepare the second-in-command

for our Bailihe station.

Right.

Zhijie,

you will be on leave for over six months.

Who is going to be Jiwei's master?

Then, Jiwei.

You can shadow me.

You should shadow me.

You can be with Xu in the morning.

You'll be with Du in the afternoon.

You can be with me at night.

What are you talking about? He's mine at night.

All right. Enough.

It's getting off-topic.

You guys.

Who do you think Zhao is?

Zhao, do your best.

You're going to be a full-time police officer soon.

Work harder.

Chief Gao.

You should pay more attention to Zhao.

For the community,

when I was on leave,

you took the role,

and did a good job.

When Zhijie is away,

you should bear it in mind more.

Do your job well.

Yes sir.

Okay. Everyone, take a seat.

Let's start the morning meeting.

Can you sit down?

I won't sit.

I'll be standing.

Master, don't worry.

Come on. Sit down.

If you say so,

the theft in my trunk

can't be solved anymore.

Yes, it can be solved.

Here's the thing.

Our neighborhood

is a bit old.

There's no underground parking lot.

The cars

are parked at the roadside.

There's only a few

surveillance cameras in this neighborhood.

Objectively speaking,

it has made it convenient

for thieves

to stole from the trunks.

Meanwhile,

it has brought about difficulties

for us to solve the case.

-So... -So what?

So I deserved to be stolen?

No.

You can't say that.

I hope you can be patient,

and give us more time.

It has been half a month.

Nothing changed at all.

Since things got stolen in my trunk,

in this neighborhood,

this has happened to three cars already.

Did you care about it?

If Officer Zhang was here,

he wouldn't allow this to happen.

Zhao.

Cao.

You're off work.

Why are you standing here?

You see these cars.

There's no underground parking lot in the neighborhood.

The cars are parked at the roadside.

It's getting warmer.

The thieves are also active.

Recently,

there have been several cases

of items stolen from car trunks.

I already reported it to

the municipality and subdistrict

to install more surveillance cameras.

They said they would plan it

when the highway construction would be completed.

Look at this.

When the highway construction will be completed.

How long will that take?

Exactly.

The suspect wasn't caught.

People have started complaining.

They've complained several times these days.

You have to catch him.

We can't solve the case without surveillance cameras.

When I was in the municipality,

they said the same thing.

How can you catch a person without surveillance cameras?

Use the police's old way. It's a basic skill.

Keeping watch.

Keeping watch?

You mean to keep watch,

and catch him red-handed.

What else?

What else can we do?

Zhao.

I'll help you.

No need, Cao.

No thanks.

Well,

chief said.

What did he say?

Chief...

didn't say anything.

Cao.

Madam is waiting for you at home.

You better go home now.

I need to go too.

This street.

And the one in the south.

The four of us here.

The four of you there.

Two people stay at each side.

Based on my judgement,

it has been three days

since he last committed a crime.

According to his pattern,

it is very likely

he will commit again in these days.

It's almost one o'clock.

Let's check the watch.

I think he's coming.

Two people stay at each side.

Let's arrest him today.

No hurries.

It's a long street.

There are a few intersections in the middle.

If he shows up, how can we block him?

And in the middle of the night.

There's no one on the street.

If we show up,

he would have fled already.

We always have this many people.

What can you do?

On the bright side,

there are many cars on the street.

There are many trees.

We can find places to hide.

Okay. Okay.

Just do as Zhao said.

Zhao, Xu and I will lead a team.

We'll guard this street.

You should guard the intersection at the back.

We'll block him at two ends.

Let's go.

Don't be too hard on him.

When I saw him during the day,

it reminded me of my rookie times.

Lin and I will be at the back.

You stay here.

Okay. Let's go.

There are more intersections on this street.

How about this?

We each guard one intersection.

If he shows up,

one can act first.

The rest of us follow.

What do you think?

Good.

Remember.

Don't fall asleep. Don't look at your phone.

Don't kill mosquitos.

Don't startle him.

Don't worry.

Zhao.

Who's there?

Cao.

But

why are you here?

It's hot. I don't want to stay at home.

Come sit.

Come over here.

What if he shows up soon?

Come on.

Cao.

Move and sit on it.

Zhao, tell me about it.

I'll help you analyze

the probability of him showing up.

Cao, here's the thing.

Someone is here.

But.

He's here. Why are you shrinking?

I...I'm shrinking?

What do you think?

Keeping watch.

How can you easily find the target?

Go on.

What did you just say?

-Mosquitoes -Keep it down.

-So many mosquitoes. -Keep it down.

It's okay.

Just a short while,

I got bit seven to eight times.

Ding.

Didn't the mosquitos bite you?

Of course they did.

Didn't you say we cannot kill them?

Cao Jianjun went there too.

He was already there when we arrived.

Nonsense!

How would he know if you didn't tell him?

Chief, it really wasn't me.

Chief,

can we ask for some rewards for Cao?

No.

First, he isn't one of us.

Second,

we did not ask for his assistance.

It has nothing to do with him.

Got it?

But...

But what?

You may leave.

What?

That's what the chief said.

When we sought assistance from the Joint Security Force,

they received subsidies as well.

How can the chief be so harsh on Jianjun?

The tea cools down

as soon as the person is gone.

Don't you think?

You have nothing to do, right?

Then go to the community,

and check the safety risks.

Zhigang, Qizi, come here.

Let's go.

Jianjun.

Cao.

Why are you running away from me?

No I didn't.

Chief.

How's everything?

Zhou Hui and your kid are doing well, right?

Yes.

How much do you earn a month here?

3,500 yuan.

3,500 is too little.

You're earning less than Zhou Hui, right.

Just half as hers.

Jianjun,

there's a saying.

Life is hard for a couple in poverty.

It makes sense.

She's your wife.

You expect her to be with you when you're poor.

To be with you when you're rich.

But why?

Zhou Hui is a good girl.

A good girl shouldn't be up for challenges.

She has already suffered a lot for you.

You should give her a good life

to live up to her good heart.

You should work hard and make money.

You should support your family.

You don't work at the police station anymore.

I hope in the future

you won't be involved in the police's work.

Do you understand?

Yes sir.

Okay, that's good.

That's all I have to say.

I hope I won't see you again.

Take care.

Chief.

The station

doesn't want me anymore.

Yes.

You don't belong to the police anymore.

It has been three days.

Why isn't he coming?

If he doesn't come,

nobody can stand it anymore.

Cao,

I asked for a reward for you.

But...

I don't want it.

How can that be?

Cao, when we catch the thief,

I'll ask for a reward for you.

I don't want it.

Zhao,

you're a good man.

You should value it.

Got it, Cao.

It's not him.

Cao,

you're not even looking.

You're able to tell by the sound.

If he rode a motorcycle,

he would be able to flee quickly.

But he would make a loud noise.

Wouldn't he disclose his time of committing the crime?

You're right.

You are more experienced.

If you were still a police officer...

That's why I told you to value it.

When you're not,

it's too late to regret.

Someone's coming.

Is he the one?

No, he isn't.

You can't be impatient when keeping watch.

The more impatient you get, the less likely he will come.

When you aren't impatient,

maybe he'll come.

What a job.

I'm a man

who has been bitten by mosquitoes every day.

I dare to say after this job,

the mosquitoes will grow into the size of pigs.

The problem is when we will finish the job.

Thank you for your effort, Xu.

No worries.

It's my job.

-Du, let me get you some water. -No thanks.

I'll do it myself.

The problem is...

Zhao.

Is your analysis accurate?

It has been four days.

No one has shown up.

Zhao, he has stolen for many times.

Maybe he thought

he stole enough here,

and changed a spot.

If so,

our efforts will be to no avail.

I don't know.

But I feel he will come back again.

You feel?

Didn't you say

he committed the crime every three to five days?

It has been four days.

With the previous seven days.

He hasn't shown up yet.

I don't know.

But that was his trail before.

Jiwei,

come here.

Look at your nose.

What? Nothing happened yet?

Keeping watch.

You must be patient.

Got it, Chief Gao.

Take this.

We're asking them to help.

We must be sincere.

[Essential balm]

You can go now.

Thank you, Chief Gao.

On that shelf over there.

See. All the mosquito repellents.

Is there anything you like?

This really works.

42 a bottle.

That's expensive.

Expensive?

We have ones that are more expensive.

Of course. We have cheaper ones as well.

Which one do you want?

I'll take this.

Sure.

42 is fine.

I'll take

eight bottles.

Eight bottles.

This is mosquito repellent cream.

One is enough.

You want eight?

Yes.

Okay. Good.

Here are seven drumsticks.

I'll take a pack of mineral water.

Got it.

Can you help me put them in seven bags?

Seven bags.

Sure. Sure.

And also the pork.

How much do you want?

Two catties.

Got it.

-Jiwei, so many things. -Zhigang.

How's everything?

Are there any chances tonight?

I don't know.

I'm so anxious.

Don't worry.

He maybe show up tonight.

Let me help you.

Zhao,

if the suspect doesn't show up tonight,

you better find someone else.

Okay. Okay.

Well,

this is the midnight snack I prepared for everyone.

This is the essential balm.

This is the mosquito repellent cream.

Please apply it.

Have some food first.

Ding, take it.

Take it.

Qiancheng, here.

Thank you. Thank you.

Here. Take it.

Xu, here.

No thanks.

Please take it.

Du.

Dawei.

-Take it. -I'll help myself.

Water.

Here.

Please. Show up.

You are exactly like me when I was young.

There's no chance of going back.

Cao. Cao.

What did you just day?

I said I envy you.

Me?

Cao, apply more mosquito repellent cream.

Too many mosquitoes here.

Apply some.

No thanks.

I'm covered with calluses from the mosquito bites.

Officer! Officer!

Officer! Here!

Look at this. Look at this.

Look at this.

Did you call the police?

Yes, it was me.

We've been keeping watch for five days.

But he committed a crime here.

What does it mean?

It means the pattern we have analyzed

isn't correct.

Xu, you can't say that.

Zhao Jiwei analyzed

his previous pattern of stealing.

He is able to move around.

Who could've thought

he went there last night?

Could it be that

he already found out we were waiting for him?

If so,

we could never see him show up.

Impossible.

How could he know?

He doesn't have any informer at our station.

At least,

it means he has expanded his scope of committing crimes.

How can we follow him then?

You're back.

How is it? Anything new?

Wei Wei, sit down.

It's okay.

At least it showed

the previous pattern of stealing we have analyzed

was correct.

Yesterday was the fifth day.

He showed up.

If he's committing crimes at separate locations,

we can't wait

at one spot to catch him.

I'm sorry.

Everybody is suffering because of me.

It's okay. Don't worry about it.

It's normal not to catch anybody while on watch.

According to the pattern you analyzed,

he would steal things every three to five days.

He did it last night.

At least within these three days,

he won't do it again.

Let's take a break.

We've been working nonstop.

It's quite too much.

Take a break.

It's okay.

We can rest for at least three days.

Let's study the case.

Look at this.

Is there anything missing?

Du, Xu, Qiancheng.

Zhao, it has been eight days.

When will this end?

Can we finish it before New Year?

I'm sorry.

You'r suffering because of me.

No. What?

Who do you think you are?

I'm sorry.

I'm not good with words.

But if I can't catch him,

I'll keep watch.

I know you've been working hard lately.

Why don't you take a rest?

I'll go by myself.

Okay, go by yourself.

Don't go.

Listen.

How dare he?

Keep saying I.

Who are we working for?

Is it for him?

Who does he think he is?

What happened?

You didn't go on watch.

Xia Jie. Xia Jie.

Xia Jie. Wake up.

Xia Jie.

It's already one o'clock.

Zhao Jiwei didn't call us.

He left first.

Hurry up.

Did you apply the repellent cream?

What's the point?

It has already formed calluses.

Hurry!

Xu, if we aren't going, I'll cook some noodles.

Ding, stay out of it.

I'll go change and stay with them.

Why are you so nosy?

Chief.

Chief.

Where's Zhao?

Since you're here,

why didn't you leave with Zhao?

Chief, well...

He doesn't know how to talk properly.

Don't just stand there.

Apply the mosquito repellent cream.

Let's go.

Are we late?

No.

Zhao, over here.

Cao.

Why are you on your own today?

It's okay.

We can still do this.

How about this?

Let's watch on each end.

If he comes,

we can chase him in the same direction.

Is it okay?

You stay here.

I'll be on that side.

Cao.

Thank you.

Chief.

Zhao, you're here.

Chief, why are you here?

I'm getting old.

I can't sleep.

I came to see you.

Are you alone?

What's the matter?

Why are you crying?

What happened?

You see.

Chief Cheng.

You've made everyone feel touched.

Chief Cheng and his team

came to support you.

This is our station's matter now.

If we can't catch him,

we won't give up.

Wipe your tears.

You're crying.

You feel wronged.

Get down!

If you don't get down,

and show yourself,

you'll waste the night again.

Come on. Sit down. Sit down.

Chief, your waist.

It's okay. Sit down.

It's okay.

Careful. What are you doing?

Chief.

I have a raincoat.

Good.

Water.

Okay. I'll drink some.

And mosquitos repellent cream.

I need it.

Well done, young man.

You're well prepared.

You never fight a battle without preparation, right?

Good. I have to praise you.

But tell me,

why were you crying?

I just think

I'm quite stupid.

I'm not good at anything.

When I make mistakes,

I don't even know what to do.

I don't even know who to ask.

In the past, I had my master.

Now, my master is away.

Zhao.

Look at you.

You reminded me of

myself when I first joined the police.

I started a lot worse than you.

I was born in the rural area.

I've only been educated for a few years.

After being in the army for a few years,

I was demobilized to the public security system.

Then I became a police officer.

Chief.

You're also from the rural area.

That's right.

As people from the rural area,

when we come to the city,

we don't have any networks

nor foundations.

What do we have?

We are hardworking.

We stand while others sit.

We walk while others stand.

We run while others walk.

We can work harder than others.

What do we lack?

We haven't seen and experienced much.

We lack perspectives.

But we can

gain perspectives.

When you see and experience things,

you'll broaden your perspective.

But if you don't work hard

when you're young,

you won't have it in life.

With your hard work,

you can become a great police officer.

But I heard

you've been quite close with Cao Jianjun recently.

Learn from his lesson.

Don't forget about it as a warning.

Chief.

Got it.

Is it him?

No, it's not.

Come on. Sit down.

Where was I?

You said

don't forget.

Don't forget what?

Don't forget to go home.

Did I say this?

I said don't forget to remind myself

to tell you to go home.

You sure went a long way

to say it.

Wait. Wait.

Chief.

Go!

Stop!

-Police! -Stop!

This is my first time.

Cuff him.

Pull him up.

Ask him where he is from.

-Let me go. -Get up. Get up.

-Besides, -It's my first time.

take him to his place.

Yes sir.

Chief Cheng.

You're here.

Didn't I say

I was the lucky star?

I was supposed to assign a rotation to keep watch.

I didn't expect,

on the first of work,

I caught the suspect.

Chief Cheng, I'm leaving now.

Chief.

Jianjun has been following you.

When I arrived, he was already here.

How many time have I told you?

Don't mind him. Don't mind him.

Why won't you listen?

Chief.

How can I not listen?

All right. Let's go.

Let's clap for Zhao.

When we rushed to his house,

the stolen goods were all there.

There were so many.

He was caught red-handed.

The money involved

was more than 50 thousand.

Zhao, you did a great job.

You solved a big case.

It wasn't me.

It was everybody.

Look at him.

His master isn't here.

He not only learned to solve cases,

he also learned to be humble.

Let's give him another round of applause.

I'm serious.

I've been here for almost a year.

In this year,

I've been confused.

I didn't know if I can

become a good policeman.

I didn't know if I can do well.

But now I know.

What do you know?

My master once said

I had no other skills.

As long as I work hard,

and try my best,

people will see it sooner or later.

I understand this now.

Captain Luo just called me.

He asked us to find him now.

Any news about our case?

I think so.

Let's go.

Okay.
