weave a tale from the past

about the greatest escape
artist and magician in history.

The amazing Harry Houdini.

Houdini was once known
as the handcuff king,

and claimed he could escape

from almost any
pair of handcuffs.

I have a theory to the secret.

Just before they slap
the handcuffs on,

they would examine Harry
for any lock picks or keys,

but then he would give
his wife Beth a big hug

and a kiss reaching
around to her hairline,

stealing a bobby pin, giving
him the tool he needed

to get out of any
pair of handcuffs.

Well, it just so happens
that I have a few hairpins.

So tonight, I will attempt
to escape from a pair

of handcuffs while I'm locked
inside of this tiny box.

do this card trick for you.

And the second perspective
that will shift

is how close you
are to this trick.

You see, whenever anybody
sees me do closeup magic,

Okay.

But here's the thing, you
can never get close enough.

But in this trick, you're
gonna get close enough.

close to eliminate

any sleight of hand
or misdirection.

I'm gonna lay on the

so that you can get a perfect
perspective of everything.

And I can't shift around you
'cause I'm stuck in one spot.

Now, every time I do this
trick, I lose a playing card.

That's why I've only got
about half the deck left.

Now Ashwini, I'm gonna
riff through these cards

and you're gonna call
stop anytime you like.

Oh, here's the thing.

It's a very simple magic trick

that anybody of any
skill level can do.

It's called the mystery, the
color-changing handkerchief.

So it uses everyday objects.

First, I'm gonna
perform it for you.

Then I'm gonna step back and
teach it to you step by step

so you know exactly
what's going on.

So the first thing you need,

as I mentioned,
color-changing handkerchief.

You need a handkerchief
or a bandana,

or in this case, a danban.

I need someone like
you're in the front row,

you're convenient.

I want you to go
ahead, check it out.

Make sure there's no
holes, no pockets.

It doesn't turn inside out
or nothing weird like that.

Of course, it's a magic show.

So you need a magic
wand like this one, ooh.

Okay, this is ridiculous.

But you get the idea.

You get a paper towel roll,
some paint and some tape,

you got a magic
wand, boys and girls.

Magic show.
(audience laughing)

So you looked at the magic wand.

What's your name again?

- Lennar.

- Lennar?

Okay, Lennar.

It's all good?

- Sir-

- Just a handkerchief
or a bandana, whatever.

Now, in order to
make it change color,

you make a tight fist like this.

You start tucking the
handkerchief in the top

because after it changes
color, you're gonna pull out

the bottom, different color.

You won't tell anybody that.

Obviously, I'm explaining this

because I'm about
to teach it to you.

I probably shouldn't
have even started.

(audience laughing)

So you start tucking it down
in the top of your fist,

down into the deep, dark
crevices of your fist.

When it's about halfway down,

much like this, you
need to make the magic.

In order to make the magic,
you get the magic wand.

So with a little
wave, a tap, ooh.

And a squeeze, it magically
goes from white to red.

Magic show!

I know, this could be
you, pass the plate.

(audience laughing)

As you squeeze, it comes
out the bottom, red,

you tap at the top,
white, give a squeeze,

tap the bottom, red,
tap at the top, white,

give us, please
pull the bottom red.

Now, a couple
pointers about this.

If you're gonna show this
to select a group of people

that are colorblind,

they're not gonna have
any idea what is going on.

And they're gonna have
the exact same reaction

you guys are having right now.

Now as it goes in white,
you pull the bottom red.

And that's how you make
a handkerchief turn from white

to red. Magic show!

So now you know
what to look for.

Now I'm gonna back it up,
teach your cue step by step.

As I mentioned, you need
to get a nice bandana

or part of daddy's tie
or mommy's handkerchief

or some fancy restaurant,
you know, napkin,

whatever you have lying around.

Make sure it doesn't
turn inside out.

There's no little hidden pocket.

It's nothing weird like that.

So we're gonna have

exactly how to do the magic.

As you remember,

Ooh, tape, paint, whatever.

You start tucking it in
the top of your fist.

You've seen this part.

Starts going down the deep,
dark crevices of your fingers.

As you remember, when it's
about halfway down like this,

you get the magic wand,

you give a little wave a
tap, ooh, and a squeeze.

And that's when it comes
out, the bottom red.

Magic show!

Now, a couple things.
(audience laughing)

People might think that there's
like a string or something,

and as I tuck it in
and give it a squeeze,

the white handkerchief is
secretly going up my sleeve

and into my jacket.

Look, I'll roll back my sleeves.

not going up my sleeves.

When you perform this yourself,

so you can roll your sleeves up,

you can do it without sleeves.

I can only roll my
sleeves up this much

'cause I'm ripped,
I'm huge, right?

So big.

(audience laughing)

Some people think that maybe
there's like a hidden pocket.

A little sort of prosthetic
or something, a little piece

of velcro will pop over.

That's ridiculous.

Not a bad theory,
but ridiculous.

(audience laughing)

The secret actually
is in the wand.

Remember, you're making
this stuff at home.

When I give a little
wave, that does nothing,

but when I give a tap,
that's when I secretly extend

the hidden blade
from inside the wand.

(audience laughing)

And when I tap, I
make a small incision,

and now it's emo night.

And when I squeeze,
it comes out.

Well, hands down,
this is the best.

Whatever, all right.

Now I understand, this
can be a little extreme

for some people, especially
if you're watching,

you know, on TV.

Some people are like,
"My kids are too.

You know, it freaks
them out, it's too much

'cause, you know,
my kids' are wuss."

(audience laughing)
So we'll back it up.

If the sign of blood
makes you uncomfortable

or anything like
that, it can happen.

You stop halfway, you gotta
think about others, right?

There's the message, kids.

So when that
happens, you squeeze,

you give a snap, and
that's when you're left

with one half dyed white one
half dyed red handkerchief,

and that's it.

out of a straightjacket

to close out the show.

- So I wanted to bring the idea
of surfing to my magic show,

and I made this
little invention in order

to do the straightjacket
escape while surfing.

And now for the moment
we've all been waiting for.

to be entertained

by a magician whose
style is as lighthearted

as it is mind blowing.

With a mix of comedy,
sleight of hand,

and a larger-than-life

he's been a standout
performer on both television

and live stages.

So just recently, I moved to
Las Vegas to do magic shows

and it's really exciting
to be in Las Vegas.

But there's things about,

I grew up in California
and there's things

about California
that I really miss.

One of those things
is being able

to go surfing pretty much
anytime that I want to.

I don't get a chance to
go very often anymore.

So I wanted to bring idea
of surfing to my magic shows

and I made this little
invention in order to do that.

It starts with this thing.

This is an old sign that says
my name, but it also serves

a very specific purpose.

It's actually two
pieces of woods

that sandwich a lazy Susan.

It creates a swiveling platform.

I'll show you guys what
this does, here we go.

(audience laughing)

Yeah, I do that every
morning in front of my mirror

and I laugh for hours.

Then I put my clothes on.

(audience laughing)

No, it's a joke, it's a joke.

I don't put my clothes on.

But I realize that that's not
the exact feeling of surfing.

Surfing has two real
distinct motions.

So I got this.

This is a pipe.

It goes on top of the
swiveling platform.

On top of that, I
place a surfboard.

And this creates the
real feeling of surfing.

I'll show you all
what this looks like.

Here we go.

(mesmerizing music)

Yeah. Hey, you.

(audience applauding)

(mesmerizing music)

Now that I've got the real
feeling of surfing, I needed

to do something on
top of the surfboard

and I didn't wanna do
anything easy for you.

So I got one of my
most difficult stunts

to perform for you right now.

This is a straightjacket.

But I need some
help from somebody

out of the audience for this.

Let's see who I can find.

(playful music)

Now, I wanna warn you, I
don't pick people raising

their hands for this
because you freak me out.

(audience laughing)

I also wanna warn you that just
'cause you don't look at me,

that doesn't mean that
I can't see you, okay?

It doesn't make you invisible.

But I do like walking,
just back and forth,

making eye contact
with some of you.

So I can see your butt
clench up as I walk past.

(audience laughing)

Didn't mean to scare you.

But I am looking for somebody

who at least seems to be
having a good time in.

(excited music)

You look like you're
having a good time.

Hi, my name's Farrell.

What's your name?

- Kelly.
- Kelly.

Kelly, please join me on stage.

Everybody, please give

- Yeah.

- Have you ever been inside
of straightjacket before?

- Never.

- No, so today's gonna
be your first time.

Great.

- Really?

- Yeah, you get in.

No, I'm just joking, yeah.

No, you don't have
to get in, all right?

But I would like you to
take a look at the jacket.

It's made out of
canvas and leather.

There are buckles and
straps on it, look at those.

Make sure they don't come off.

It's very important.

(excited music)

Everything good, Kelly?

- Yep.
- Great.

Kelly, turn the jacket around.

So the openings are facing me.

My arms will go into the
sleeves from the front.

On the back of the jacket,
Kelly, there are five buckles

and five straps.

Please start at the top.

Work your way to the bottom,

buckling each of
those like a belt.

Use the little retainer
loop at everything.

While you do that, I will
tell you all a brief history

of the straightjacket.

(audience laughing)

Yeah, all the way to the
last one if you can get it.

All right, now, the
straightjacket was invented

in 2,000 BC by the Egyptians.

(audience laughing)

It was originally
made out of paper,

but then the Egyptians
realized this didn't make

a good restraint because people

could just tear their way out.

After the great
Egyptian paper debacle,

(audience laughing)

they decided to make
the jacket from papyrus.

But then they realized

that's just the
Egyptian word for paper

(audience laughing)

and they had to start over.

Now, originally, this
was invented for a game

where a bunch of people
would get on a stage

and they would all race,

see who could remove
the jacket the quickest.

The winner of the
race to be rewarded

with the horn of a unicorn.

The game eventually became
so popular that it led

to the demise of
the unicorn race.

(audience laughing)
(excited music)

And look, I don't
wanna brag or anything,

but my great, great, great,
great, great, great, great,

great, great, great,
great, great grandma,

she won one of
those unicorn horns.

(excited music)

All right, Kelly, go.

'cause I don't think
they're buying this,

but I've got two more
straps and two more buckles.

There's a buckle
here, strap here.

Those go across my body.

Kelly, they buckle in the back,

tighten that as much
as you possibly can.

A lot of people ask me where
to get straightjackets from,

I got this one from TSA.

(audience laughing)

You good now, Kelly, when
you're done with that,

I've got one more strap for you.

It hangs between
my legs, all right?

But Kelly, I've got a
method for this one.

It's like football.

Do you like football?

- Yeah.
- Great.

Nothing more manly
than football.

- That's right.
- Yeah.

So you'll be like a quarterback.

I'll be the center, I'm
just gonna hike it to you.

No, you stand behind me.

You get ready, all right?

This is like, no, this
is real dude stuff.

All right?

There you go.

Set, hike.

Good, get it?

- Yup.
- Good, you got it?

Good.

All right, now look, there's
a, yeah, you did a good job.

All right. Yep.

- Yeah, man.

- You know you could
have gone right or left,

but you just went
down the middle.

Kelly, you've done a great job.

I've got one, no,
you're not leaving.

I got one more quick
favor left to ask.

If you would go over to that
side of the swiveling board,

hit your feet, place them
against it like this,

toes on top.

That'll keep it from
swiveling around.

You see that?

Good, I will stand
on the surfboard.

If you would take
your hands, Kelly.

Put them on my elbows.

There you go.

You found, nope,
below my shoulders.

There you go, you found them.

(audience laughing)

- Yeah, there's two of them.

- Yeah, sorry, yeah.

The S is what makes it plural.

- All right. Okay.

I'm gonna-

- You ready?

- Yep.
- Try and balance.

Ready?

One, two, three.

Nope, we're all gonna die.

All right, whoa.

You know a better idea,

actually, put your
hands on my shoulders.

That might work a little better.

Here we go.

Okay, I got a

yourselves in this
exact same predicament,

you too can escape from a
straightjacket while surfing.

Now the first thing I need to do

is get one of my arms
up and over my head.

So here we go, arm up
over the head. (grunts)

Okay, almost passed out.

I got little bit of slack...

Aw.

I just hit myself in the face.

All right, I gotta do this
part slow, I think so. (grunts)

It's like escaping
from a sweatshirt.

But since I've got this
ridiculous contraption,

it eliminates my eyesight
for a few seconds.

So if I come flying at
you, dude, I'm sorry.

(audience laughing)

Or you could catch me,
that'd be amazing, right?

You could hold me over your head

like it's dirty dancing,
but with two dudes.

(audience laughing)
