It's hard to imagine a more physically demanding way

of making dessert.

Mochi is made by pulverizing steamed rice

into a sticky dough.

This beloved confection is used

to wrap both savory and sweet treats,

including ice cream.

Teams need to pound out enough mochigome

to make 12 mochi bowls

to the satisfaction of the mochi master.

Japan's national sport, sumo,

is steeped in tradition, from the sacred Clay ring

to the mawashi, a 19-foot-long piece of canvas

that has to be perfectly wrappd

before a wrestler can compete.

Putting one on is a two-person job, and something

teams must do to complete this detour.
