beautiful and talented A-list stars.

But the Oscars also shines a light on an
incredible community of people you will never see.

Craftspeople, artisans,
technicians, costumers.

That's right. I can't name
them all. There are too many.

Hardworking men and women behind the camera
who have devoted their lives to making film.

Now yes, many people we celebrate
tonight are not famous. They're not wealthy.

But they are devoted to a craft that can, in
moments, bring us all a little closer together.

Now for almost a century, we have
paused every spring to elevate and

celebrate an art form that has the
power, at its very best, to unite us.

So yes, even in the face of
terrible wildfires and divisive

politics, the work, which is what
this is about, the work continues.

And next year, and for years
to come, through trauma and

joy, this seemingly absurd
ritual is going to be here.

I will not. I'm leaving Hollywood to
run a bed and breakfast in Orlando.

and beauty feel like possession.

There is no doubt as to your prowess. Chameleon

Now, as we all know, Jeremy Strong is
irrefutably the most serious actor on Earth.

He's also like a brother to me, and I have watched him come
from sleeping in the bleachers outside the Oscars the night

that I was nominated for chaplain 1993 to his blistering
portrayal of Roy Cohn in The Apprentice, which was a masterclass.

this happened. It was just over a year ago.

As I was writing this song, I thought
this goes even beyond the movie.

This is about life and
about all our journeys.

Gabby, who goes by the name Her, I can't think
of anybody that could have done a song like Her.

It was so meant to be.

This song is really a reminder
that you can go through

hell, but still you're
going to make it through.

Like a bird, there's a song about
longing to ascend, but there's doubt there.

Greg, the director, was really into
just supporting whatever our vision was.

He let us really paint on this canvas and do
whatever, and he also had some amazing ideas.

We've just been floored by the
support and the response to it.

It's an honor. Thank you for the
freedom to create wholeheartedly.

Like El Mal, Mi Caminho
is a song of emancipation.

Spanish is such a great
language for pop music.

And Selena's radiance
makes it happen.

We need to believe that she's singing
on top of that song that everybody knows.

So it had to feel familiar and at the
same time something you can dance to.

Writing down the lyrics to Never
Too Late and knowing I was about

to set them in front of Elton
John was just totally surreal.

It came together so
brilliantly. Originally, the

documentary was going to be
called Goodbye, Elbert Road.

And we changed it
immediately to Never Too Late.

Oh my God, this is like
everything that this film is.

Bringing in Brandy brought a whole
new dimension to us as a songwriting team.

It's something that I'll
take with me forever.

No Other Land reflects the harsh reality
that we have been enduring for decades,

and to stop the ethnic
cleansing of Palestinian people.

We made this film,
Palestinians and Israelis,

because together our
voices are stronger.

We see each other, the atrocious destruction
of Gaza and its people which must end,

the Israeli hostages brutally taken in the
crime of October 7th, which must be freed.

When I look at Basel, I see
my brother, but we are unequal.

We live in a regime where I am
free under civilian law, and Basel

is under military laws that destroy
his life and he cannot control.

There is a different path, a political
solution, without ethnic supremacy,

with national rights
for both of our people.

And I have to say, as I
am here, the foreign policy

in this country is
helping to block this path.

And, you know, why? Can't
you see that we are intertwined?

That my people can be truly safe if
Basel's people are truly free and safe?

There is another way. It's not
too late for life, for the living.

but more importantly, he

won the hearts of film

I'm going to put this down.

So we're all here tonight and watching
this broadcast because we love movies.

Where did we fall in love with
the movies? At the movie theater.

Watching a film in the theater
with an audience is an experience.

We can laugh together,
cry together, scream in fright

together, perhaps sit in
devastated silence together.

And in a time in which the world can feel
very divided, this is more important than ever.

It's a communal experience
you simply don't get at home.

And right now, the theater-going
experience is under threat.

Movie theaters, especially
independently owned theaters,

are struggling and it's
up to us to support them.

During the pandemic, we
lost nearly 1,000 screens

in the US and we continue
to lose them regularly.

If we don't reverse this trend, we'll
be losing a vital part of our culture.

This is my battle cry. Filmmakers,
keep making films for the big screen.

I know I will.

Distributors, please focus first and foremost
on the theatrical releases of your films.

Neon did that for me and I thank
you from the bottom of my heart.

Parents, introduce your children
to feature films in movie theaters

and you'll be molding the next
generation of movie lovers and filmmakers.

And for all of us, when we can,
please watch movies in the theater

and let's keep the great tradition of the
movie-going experience alive and well.

And one last thing, my mother
introduced me to cinema at five years old.

Today is also her birthday.
