We picked up four and a half ounces last week. It's a pretty bloody good week considering

the breakdown, so that's why we're staying on this area.

We're going to make sure we keep finding enough gold to pay each other and to pay off the

digger. This digger cost us about $70,000. In gold numbers, that's about 20 ounces, so

no, we're not even halfway to paying off this machine. And we're halfway through the season.

This is the beginning of The Wanderers. This season, Levi and Bridget North have teamed

up with Kyle Wilson. Wow, what a beautiful snake.

Gambling their life savings to stake the Excalibur lease in the harsh Pilbara region of northwest

in Australia. This lease has gold all over it.

After proving up their ground, they've moved their converted school bus home onto the lease,

saving them the gruelling four-hour daily round trip from town.

There's little Target. Rock the ground. She's out. Let's see what we've got. Straight in

the skeet too. Straight in the hand. Bloody shard. There's a little bit of steel that's

come off the bucket. Because the ground that we're working so hard, as the bucket scratches

along, sometimes it can peel little bits of metal off.

Yeah, the ground's getting super hard the deeper we go. It's really compacted. But the

gold's just down deep, so we've just got to keep digging down to it.

Millions of years ago, an ancient river system carried gold from the surrounding area into

the valley. As the water dried up, the riverbed was exposed to the sun, forming a dense, hardened

layer known as cowcreek, trapping the gold-bearing pay dirt.

How's it going? Hard digging, man. Oh, even the batter bucket's getting a bit worn out.

What's the plan? Let's split it in half, and we'll walk the

pad and we'll go down again, mate. Let's rip in.

man. These things are 200 bucks a pop. This patch of ground that we're working in the moment is just too hard for picks,

Over the last few seasons, we've found gold, but it's been so hit and miss.

Trying to desperately find something that can deliver something on a consistent basis so I can say, right, we know what we're going to get each week.

We're here on my mate Ian's mining license. If he might be able to do a deal to buy his pay dirt that he's got stockpiled,

that hopefully has got enough fine gold in it to deliver the 100% consistency of gold that we really need and particularly Ethan.

We've got to do a test band first to make sure there's actually enough gold in it.

So, I'm just trying to find these old-timers workings that we saw on the drone.

Look at this. These rock formations aren't natural.

I think we're standing on an old-timers camp.

See how it's like this rectangle shape?

I actually think that could be a grave.

This is facing straight down into that gully,

which would have been where the water ran through.

And one thing we know about the Chinese was that it was quite a ritual when someone had passed.

They would bury them on the top of a hill like this, facing, overlooking the water.

During the 1800s, with the promise of vast amounts of gold,

over 40,000 Chinese immigrants made the four-month journey by sea to Australia.

They then travelled for weeks by foot just to reach the Palmer River.

Some found a fortune in gold, but many returned to China penniless or perished under the harsh Australian sun.

So, I'm going to head into this gully and start detecting around these edges,

see what I can pick up.

This is great. I hope they're less than gold behind, though.

There you get a lot of false signals in here, a lot of hot rocks or just noisy ground.

I actually haven't got a normal signal yet. I haven't picked up a bit of junk.

When you see this many old-timers working, there should just be junk everywhere.
